1 WILSHIRE BOULEVARD TEMPLE BULLETIN Online Edition Please call to obtain a full printed copy. Volume 99, Number 7 July 1, 2012 Our Hollywood History They called him Rabbi to the Stars. During his 69 years as senior rabbi at Wilshire Boulevard Temple, Rabbi Edgar F. Magnin cultivated close, personal relationships with legendary entertainment industry executives and celebrities. He presided over the life-cycle events of larger than life movie moguls Louis B. Mayer, the Warner brothers and Irving Thalberg, among many others. These show business pioneers both inspired and helped build, in 1929, the historic Temple we now call home. For the third Temple of what was then Congregation B nai B rith, Rabbi Magnin envisioned a main sanctuary with an interior like a theater. Mayer donated the funds for the Main Sanctuary s east and west triple lancet art glass windows. The Warner brothers commissioned the creation of the panoramic murals. Carl Leammle donated the Sanctuary s spicebox chandeliers; and Thalberg, renowned producer of such classics as Grand Hotel and Mutiny on the Bounty, donated the ornately decorated interior dome and Sh ma oculus. Thalberg s early death, at age 37, brought a crowd of 8,000 mourners to the steps of Wilshire Boulevard Temple, where Rabbi Magnin officiated his funeral in September Thalberg s spirit lives on among the scaffolds and platforms rising up to the ceiling of the dome where today restoration work on its coffered plaster, the Sh ma and oculus are at full speed. Once crumbling to the floor, plaster is being repaired or replaced, the gold trim regilded and the center repainted to appear as it was in 1929, in its original, dazzling glory. Rabbi Magnin died in 1984 at the age of 94. Shortly before his death, he summed up his life: God has been good to me. I ve been very fortunate in the choice of my ancestors and the choice of my friends. This history has come full circle recently illustrated in an article in the Hollywood Reporter s June 8 issue. The article, Hollywood s Hottest $150 Million Project is an 83-Year-Old Synagogue, draws parallels between Hollywood support for the construction of the Temple Campus in 1929, and Hollywood s support for the reconstruction happening today. It s an entertaining read; a link is available on our website in the news section, and it s highly recommended. Visit to read about Hollywood s Hottest $150 Million Project... 2 Torah Portion The Power of Words Matot (Numbers 30:2-32:42) Whoever said that sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me was wrong. The truth is, words have a lot of power sometimes positive, sometimes negative. In B reishit, when God creates the world, God does so with words. Let there be light. God spoke, and then there was existence. God s words are powerful. It s true we cannot simply speak and create something out of nothing, but our words have power too. As we read the closing chapters of the Book of Numbers this month, the Torah reminds us of the importance of vows and oaths the importance and power of our words. The Torah commands us to put thought into the words that cross our lips, and the commitments we make with those words. Torah Online: We all know at least one person who is a nice, wellmeaning person in the world, but has absolutely no followthrough. Someone who says: Don t worry about it, I ll take care of it, but never does. Someone who says: Let s get lunch next week, I ll call you, but never does. We all make these casual commitments with good intentions that sometimes fall by the wayside, but the Torah reminds us that there really is no such thing as a casual promise. Despite our smartphones and Skype, our ipads and the internet, keeping our word matters just as much today as it did three millennia ago. Rabbi M. 3 Tikkun Olam It s Fun and Makes You Feel Good It s just after nine o clock and I m sitting crisscross apple sauce (cross-legged) on the floor in a circle with two dozen students at the Mann Family Early Childhood Center at the Irmas Campus. It s their last week of Nursery school and it s time to decide where the tzedakah they ve been collecting all year should be donated. Proudly, they present three tzedakah boxes overflowing with change. Where should we donate our money, Rabbi? they ask me. Well, what do you think is the most important thing we can help needy people with? I ask them. Toys, cars, houses, clothes, jobs, food, and shoes, their eager hands wave in the air as they call out suggestions. With the help of their teacher, Randee, we make a list and take a vote. It is nearly unanimous food. Feeding the hungry is how they want to use their tzedakah. Rabbi, can you suggest an organization that feeds the hungry that we could donate our tzedakah to? asks Randee. Well, you know the Temple has two food pantries that feed hundreds of hungry people every single week, I tell them. But before I can finish my sentence, Beth, an energetic five-year-old, chimes in, Sometimes on Sunday mornings, I go to the Food Pantry and we make sandwiches and hand them out to all of the hungry people, she shares. It s fun and it makes me feel good. Just five years old, but Beth understands how meaningful a morning spent at either of our Temple s food pantries can be. This summer, between camp and vacations, spend a Sunday morning with your family at either our Temple Campus or OPCC Food Pantries and discover what Beth has discovered it s fun, and it makes you feel good. Rabbi M. Beaumont Shapiro Join our food pantries, Adult Opportunities Summertime And... Summer is the time to catch up on reading. Whether in a plane, near a pool or in the garden, a book leads us into the new, the different, the interesting, the challenging. I so look forward to opening the pages of summer reading! My Life in Jewish Renewal: A Memoir (Rabbi Zalman Schacter-Shlomi, Rowman and Littlefield): This book reflects on a powerful, ever growing thinker who began his youth in Europe, became a dynamic Jewish leader in the 1960s, challenged his Orthodox origins and opened questions of Jewish spirituality to the non-jewish world. 4 Brawerman Elementary School The World in Our Hands, Celebrating Our 13 th Year We are Brawerman reverberated through a filled Marcia Israel Chapel/Auditorium as Brawerman Elementary School celebrated its 13th year. Parents, faculty, clergy, alumni and friends gathered for an inspirational evening that included a delicious dinner and memorable program. Everyone had an opportunity to decorate tiles for a wall on Leder Playground that will serve as a backdrop for a new water filling station and breathtaking garden. Carrying out the water theme, a significant donation was made to both the Jewish National Fund for Water Renewal Project and to Charity Water, to bring safe drinking water to people in developing countries. Head of School, Nadine Breuer, shared her reflections on how a little school has grown up, and Rabbi Steven Leder offered blessings for the b nei mitzvah with the charge as we go forward to always remain true to who we are. YES, WE ARE BRAWERMAN! Photos courtesy of Tom Pascucci, Videosyndicate Religious School Congratulations Confirmands and Graduates This was a very exciting year for the Religious School. Our Teen Program participants were confirmed on Shavuot. As they read and chanted Torah, and participated in a special service with family, friends and fellow congregants, they stepped forward into a new era of Jewish responsibility. Under the leadership of Rabbi David Eshel, our confirmands studied together regularly. They developed into the most diverse group of teens, each with his or her unique perspective on what it means to be Jewish, and differing reasons for their continued involvement in our program through grade 10. We would also like to congratulate our three grade 12 students who have just graduated from our Temple Programs: Tracie Brown, Jesse Grossman and Erica Tooch. We thank their parents for the commitment and support they have given these students in their pursuit of deeper, informed Jewish connections. Their many educators over the years have listened to their amazing questions and challenged them to arrive at their own conclusions, using Jewish values and Torah as their guide. This group blossomed into fine representatives of each of our Teen Programs Beit Midrash, W(ednesday)N(ight)P(rogram), WBTY (Wilshire Boulevard Temple Youth) and Ozrim (Teacher Training Program), as well as participants in Choir and tikkun olam activities. We are very proud of them all and wish them continued success. 4

5 Early Childhood Centers The Language of Materials By exploring relationships between materials, children learn to understand relationships between themselves and the world around them. This idea was explored in an in-depth, long-term art project, culminating in the 2012 Mann Family Early Childhood Center Art Show, showcased on May 30 and 31. Students began with encouragement from their teachers and resident atelierista, Aynav Yefet, to discuss projects of interest to them. For example, the Kochavim students were inspired to make birdbaths after witnessing, one day after a heavy rainstorm, birds taking a bath in a container outside the classroom door. As a group they discussed materials and agreed upon clay; then distributed tasks among each other to shape, or to paint, or to glaze the clay. The process of creating the birdbaths helped the children gain insight into working as a group, working with clay, as well as a deeper love for animals and nature. After reading the book Mr. Popper s Penguins by Richard Atwater, a child in the class posed the question, how do you get to the North Pole? This inspired the Eshel class to create maps of the school, their bedrooms, train tracks and basketball courts. The process built upon itself from there, with map collecting, observing and, finally, creating. Based on the Reggio Emilia educational approach, where teacher and student partner in learning, all art projects on display in the show began with teachers setting up an environment for the students that was conducive to the exchange and exploration of ideas. As the students began work, teachers documented their process using tape recorders, videos, ipads, cameras and paper and pencils. Teachers then studied the documentation and helped guide the children through their project. Not only were the final works of art on display in the Saffro Dining Room and in the courtyard at the Irmas Campus, but the documentation of the process of creating the art as well. Like the children, our educators are continually learning, and the 2012 Art Show was a celebration of the accomplishments of both students and teachers. Camps A Camp Shabbat in New York City It began with an from former camper Mikey Latner to Camp Director Doug Lynn asking if it would it be all right to hold a camp reunion in New York City. Fast forward several months, and thanks to the efforts of Mikey and Sasha Feldstein, 20 camp alumni gathered in Brooklyn in April for a Shabbat dinner, singing and dancing just like they had experienced at camp. The dinner, catered by a local deli (good, but not quite the same as a John Bard Shabbat dinner!), included chicken, challah, salad, rice pilaf and apple turnovers, with some homemade treats brought by attendees. While many who attended arrived thinking it would be a nice, two-hour Shabbat dinner with some familiar people, it ended up being an amazing four-hour event that included a full song and dance session. One alum brought a guitar and ipod, with familiar Israeli dance music that encouraged attendees to dance through the night, until, as one alum wrote: everyone was dripping with sweat. She continued It was so nice to escape the busy city life and come together with this community that felt like home. It also rekindled relationships with people that I did not even know lived here in the city. It is evident by this event in New York City that camp truly is wherever alumni come together. What campers of all ages remember as fond experiences are held close and important, and span a lifetime. Cheri Lauterbach Camp Alumni & Development Director 5

6 Developments Dedicated to You This is a particularly special year at Wilshire Boulevard Temple. We are smack in the middle of the restoration of our beloved Sanctuary, with scaffolding, wood boarding, plastic wrapping, drilling, concrete pouring, vacuuming, painting and polishing pervading the iconic room through the sun drenched days of summer and on into next year. As you are now aware, our High Holy Day services this year will take place at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. For the first time since it was We will make sure this (High Holy Day services) is an exceptional experience for all members. dedicated in 1929, the Sanctuary will be dark during the holiest days of the year. But rest assured, we are all in good hands. Not only have we secured one of the most magnificent spaces in our city for services, we have the finest, most dedicated High Holy Day staff to make sure things run smoothly. Membership Services Director Cheryl Mandel Garland will oversee all High Holy Day logistics related to congregants this year. Cheryl transitioned into her new position as Membership Director in January 2012, after having served Wilshire Boulevard Temple Camp families as Registrar for nearly two decades. What she most wants Temple members to know regarding this year s services is: Everything has been well thought out, and carefully and meticulously planned. We will make sure this is an exceptional experience for all our members. Cheryl s responsibilities beyond the High Holy Days include welcoming new families into the Temple family, and working with those that require financial assistance; partnering with our Director of Adult Programs, Susan Nanus, in crafting meaningful events and programming to engage and enrich congregants lives; planning Kiddush lunches for b nei mitzvah families; and representing the Temple at community-wide events, such as the Larchmont Fair and other Jewish-related events like Israel Day at Rancho Park. Working closely with Cheryl for the High Holy Days is Cristina Mauro, an administrative professional at the Temple for the past ten years. Cristina began her career at the Temple on the switchboard and as a receptionist, transferring into a more expansive role in membership services. Currently, Cristina assists the camps, schools, manages the Memorial Wall in the Temple Sanctuary, incoming tribute donations, helps manage the membership database and makes sure everyone has their challah on Shabbat. For the High Holy Days, Cristina assures congregants, Cheryl and I are get it done people, we will get it done for you to the best of our abilities. If you re happy, we re happy. Cristina has deep affection for the Temple and the community. She explains: The Jewish community does so much outreach, not just within the Jewish faith, but in the greater community, for example the Food Pantries and the Big Give. The Temple really lives up to tikkun olam. Cheryl and Cristina are also at the center of another special change this year. The Membership Department has replaced the former Donor Circle program where members give above and beyond their normal membership contribution with Each One Help One. Each One Help One introduces new levels of giving to help support families who can otherwise not afford a Temple membership, and to help continue the excellence of services at Wilshire Boulevard Temple that congregants are accustomed to. Cheryl s investment in the Temple is not only professional, but also personal. She has two daughters who have attended the camps for many years. Camp is their second home, she says. The Temple s rabbis have helped nourish their growth and we re so grateful to the Wilshire Boulevard Temple family that has provided so much support to us from baby namings to deaths, and, maybe one day, a marriage or two. For questions regarding High Holy Days or Each One Help One, please call the Membership Department at (213) or visit 6
