2 Kehillah - Community We are a welcoming, spirited and spiritual community of people whose lives are enriched by our connection to Judaism and to one another. For more than 30 years, we've gathered in the eastern Sacramento valley to learn, celebrate, pray and grow together. We are newly-weds and empty-nesters, toddlers and elders, doubters and the devout. We are the non-jewish partners and the newcomers to Judaism. We are LGBTQ. We are those revisiting the comfort of our childhood rituals and those searching for something that might have been missing since then. We are teachers and students. We find connections through study of Torah and through moments spent together as a community. We welcome our guests and celebrate our simchas, we visit our sick and we mourn with our bereaved, we stand with the State of Israel and we care for each other and our planet. We want to make the world a better place. We want you to learn with us, find connections and become a part of our greater Jewish family. This brochure is a tool that will help you discover the adult education, monthly healing groups, social opportunities, and wellness classes that you can join here at Temple Or Rishon. 2

4 With the purchase of 7707 Hazel Avenue, our community has begun to imagine what is possible. This is the moment for us to take our passion, and work together to unleash an engaging and creative conversation that will allow us to reimagine our congregational community and our space, our building and our Temple campus. It is now time to discuss what we will be like, and look like, as we head into the future. Building our future requires all of us, together, to share our hopes and dreams, and then work TOGETHER to make them come true. It is time for all of us to become part of the conversation. Please join us for one of two Congregational Conversations where we will discuss the road ahead and begin planning for the future. Sunday, October 15th 10:30am -or- Sunday, November 5th 10:30am Both meetings will be held in the TOR sanctuary. Have thoughts or ideas to share right now? them to 4

This class is a great opportunity for learning some holiday history, creating new family rituals, and increasing the joy of your home celebrations! 10 Jews and Words Instructor: Rabbi Alan Rabishaw Thursdays: February 8, 15 and March 1 7:00 pm Celebrated Israel author Amos Oz and his daughter, noted historian Fania Oz-Salzberger ask the question, Why are words so important to so many Jews? As we read their book we will roam the breadth of Jewish history as we attempt to understand the sacred relationship of Jews and words. Through a blend of storytelling and scholarship, conversation and argument, Amos and Fania tell the tales behind Judaism s most enduring names, adages, disputes, texts, and quips. These words, they argue, compose the chain connecting Abraham with the Jews of every subsequent generation. Together we will explore their ideas and what they mean to us today, and tomorrow. Fee: $25 including book $30 (non member) Writing a Jewish Ethical Will Instructors: Rabbi Alan Rabishaw and Carol Catinari Sundays: April 15, 22 and 29 10:30am Are you familiar with the Jewish custom of writing an ethical will? One generation writes a letter to the next summing up all that they have learned in their life, as well as share what they want most for those who will follow them. These letters of wisdom and values teach the next generation that the lessons from our lives are just as much a part of the legacy we want to leave as all the material possessions. In this class we will explore the history of ethical wills, read many different examples and attempt to get started in writing our own! Fee: $10 $15 (non member) 10 10
