The Shoah is now becoming a faint glimmer in our consciousness, as survivors and eyewitnesses age and pass on. 7 O ur Region is the organizational link between the Conservative Jewish Men s Clubs in Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri and Nebraska and our parent body, the International Federation of Jewish Men s Clubs. Together, we strive to increase the level of observance, the level of synagogue participation, and the level of brotherhood among our members. We accomplish this by sharing ideas and pooling our talents and resources. Our achievements are evidenced by the great strides made in the areas of programming, education and personal enrichment enjoyed by our Men s Club members. Our Federation has developed programs such as the World Wide Wrap, The Art of Jewish Living Series, Hebrew Literacy, Yom HaShoah Candles, Men s Club Shabbat, Hearing Men s Voices, and Keruv. We have also produced several video tapes including, The Ties That Bind, Inbound Mercy and Shabbat Service. As club leaders, we are asking you to encourage your board members to avail themselves of the wealth of timely information, resources, and ideas offered by the Federation of Jewish Men s Clubs to enhance your own club s programs, and to positively impact the lives of your members, their families, your synagogue, and your community. In doing so, we can accomplish our mission: Stimulating Leadership, Innovation & Community. 5
8 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Kol Hakavod to all of the 2014 Men and Youth of the Year, and welcome to our Man of the Year/Youth of the Year Dinner. We are here to honor and thank the Men and Youth in our Community who have demonstrated dedication and continued commitment to their clubs, groups, synagogues and the community. Your leadership has made a difference by making our Jewish lives better. This event is not just for the people we have chosen to honor; it s for all of us. We loved planning this event as much as you love attending it. The new format to include Youth of the Year and holding registration and ad book payment via website are examples of our international role as change agents. Our mantra is to stimulate Men s Club leadership to innovate by executing distinctive programming that builds and enhances a sense of community. There is no better way to lead, but by example, and this celebration of our multiple generation leaders is just one. L dor v dor. There is nothing like this in our community, so we stepped up to fill the gap. Other innovative Midwest Region programs filling gaps are summarized on the previous page and our website at Our work is not finished and neither is that of the Men and Youth leaders who we honor today. True change agents continuously set new visions and road maps to effect positive change. They do not fear failure, but learn from it. We are confident the leaders we are honoring will fulfill this role and create a more vibrant community. On behalf of the Midwest Region Federation of Jewish Men s Clubs Executive Board, I would like to extend our warmest congratulations to all of the honorees, and our organizing committees in Northbrook, Illinois and St. Louis, Missouri for hosting these inspiring events. Dr. Michael J. Greenberg President Midwest Region Federation of Jewish Men s Clubs 6

CKI Men's Club, about Bill McFarlane As a small congregation without a large capital improvement budget, Congregation Kneseth Israel in Elgin depends greatly upon the kindness and ability of its members. Thus, when a need arises, whether it's installing or repairing awnings, light fixtures, kitchen equipment, painting the Rabbi's office, or any other of the many odd jobs that routinely arise, CKI knows it can count on Bill McFarlane for his expertise and effort. Bill, a Wisconsin native, came to CKI more than 15 years ago with his wife Jana, who has been CKI Sisterhood president for the past two years. One who prefers to roll up his sleeves and do the work rather than seek the limelight, from the start Bill has been a man who can be counted on to get the job done. Besides doing yeoman's work to maintain and upgrade CKI's physical plant, Bill also regularly, and with no fanfare, delivers donations to a local food pantry and helps needy congregants with work around their homes. 28 Joe Goldberg Congregation B nai Amoona St. Louis, MO Joe is the son of Pam & Kenny Goldberg and brother of Jessie. He is a fourth generation member of Congregation B nai Amoona and has been a tireless achiever at and beyond Parkway Central High School. In his current role as USY Emtza Region s president, and USY s international social action vice president, Joe s singular dedication to that organization is profound. He has certainly benefited from having great examples. His term as co-president last year follows in the tradition set by three of his cousins. It was only natural this led him to regional and international leadership roles. Joe s other passion is increasing motivation, excitement, and inspiration toward social activism in our local communities. He is a member and officer of too many academic and religious honors societies to list. Joe also performs with his Concert Orchestra II group, where he plays violin. He cites his summer experience on the USY Israel Pilgrimage as critical to strengthening his connection to Conservative Judaism. His proud parents have been supportive in all of their son s activities. Kenny is currently serving as a vice president on B nai Amoona s Executive Committee and on its Youth Commission. We all look forward to watching Joe as he moves on to bigger things after graduation in the spring. The void he leaves will surely be filled by the rising underclassmen that he has helped to mentor (including his sister), and they will have the challenge of maintaining our tradition of USY excellence in St. Louis and throughout the Midwest Region. 26
