3 IN THE NEWS Amy Meltzer, Lead Kindergarten teacher at Lander-Grinspoon Academy in Northampton, MA, is one of three Jewish educators to win a 2015 Covenant Award for excellence in Jewish education. Including this year s awardees, 75 Jewish educators have received a Covenant Award since its establishment in The Covenant Foundation is a program of the Crown Family Philanthropies and members of the Crown family including James Crown, Jordan Goodman, and Sara Crown Star presented the three recipients and bestowed the Award. Each of the 2015 recipients received $36,000, and each of their institutions, $5,000. Accepting the Covenant Award on November 8 at the Covenant Foundation's Award Dinner in Washington, DC, each recipient spoke about the holy work of Jewish education. They spoke of their individual commitments to continue working to ensure that future generations feel the impact and inspiration that creative and dedicated teachers can have on Jewish life. Join us monthly 3 NOAH FRIEDMAN-KASSIS BAR MITZVAH December 19, 2015 Son of Liz Friedman & Peter Kassis Noah Friedman-Kassis was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and moved to Northampton at the age of 4 and has lived here ever since. As a small kid, he loved reading for hours on end and baking with his mom, and later, all by himself. Right now, some of his favorite things to do are hike, play music (especially the violin), listen to music, play ultimate frisbee and other sports, and just hang out with his friends. He s in an orchestra and four other bands at school, and some of his favorite music to play is classical music from the romantic and baroque periods, contemporary and rock pop, fiddle, and rock n roll. He loved going to Ramah in the Rockies, a Jewish overnight outdoor adventure camp in Sedalia, CO, this past summer. His favorite place is the N, a lakeside cottage colony in the Adirondack Mountains, where he's been going every year since he was born. He loves to see his family and is grateful that so many of them are close by. He is someone who genuinely loves to learn, and to make the world a better place. He is very excited for his Bar Mitzvah and to be able to lead the community.

4 BEHIND THE SCENES OF WINTER DELIGHT OUR FESTIVE FUNDRAISING PARTY WINTER DELIGHT is our light, and bright and sparkling party that will usher in Chanukah (which begins the following night). Our party is designed to bring people together in the warmth of the social hall for dancing, fun food and alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The days are getting shorter, and it s a good time to come into the light, for just a little while, before going back to our Winter lives. As we think about lifting the curtain on this festive occasion, I d like us to contemplate for a moment another festive moment the celebration of the three marriages at the end of Shakespeare s A Midsummer Night s Dream. This frothy comedy displays, with the marriages that cement the community, a self-consciousness about the nature of celebrations that bring people together. From the play we see that being together at moments of joy is healthy as well as happy. Inside the Globe theater, united by comedy, people from very different backgrounds intermingle, and in the community experience, push back the darkness for a little while. The Globe audience watching the marriages of A Midsummer Night s Dream could, moreover, see itself reflected in the onstage audience that is caught up in the festive atmosphere of celebration. But Puck reminds us, through an evocation of a hungry, angry, lonely outside world, of what lies waiting beyond the warm and well-lit space that accommodates the Renaissance audience: Now the hungry lion roars, / And the wolf behowls the moon. His description becomes more and more disturbing: outside the playhouse, finally, is death (see Act five, scene 1, lines 366 and following). But this is not the end of the play. The marriages, celebrated by all levels of society, are to be protected: Every fairy take his gait, / And each several chamber bless, / Through this palace, with sweet peace; / And the owner of it blest / Ever shall in safety rest. (see Act five, scene 1, lines ). Celebrations that bring us together create safety and community. Gatherings of celebration are usually associated with warmth and light. We want to evoke all these associations with WINTER DELIGHT on December 5, from 5-8. We may not be able to rival Shakespeare s play, but we can take a cue from his drama. Those who come to our party come from different backgrounds, but, as Shakespeare s audience is united by the drama they see, so are we tightly linked by the bonds of Jewish Culture a culture that, with the celebration of Chanukah, shows how important light is. I can t end this column without a reminder that, with WINTER DELIGHT, we are raising money literally to keep our synagogue lights burning. So come into the light. Join our party. Celebrate our culture. I hope to see you there. Shalom, Gillian Murray Kendall 4

TUESDAY MORNING STUDY with Rabbi Nancy Flam Every Tuesday 8:00-9:15AM IN THE LIBRARY Class ends December 15, Shir HaShirim - The Song of All Songs This year we turn our attention to the Song of Songs, a collection of love poetry included in the Jewish Bible, which can be (and has been) interpreted in all sorts of ways throughout the ages. With the guidance of the exquisite new commentary written by Michael Fishbane, we will pay particular attention to the "Remez" and "Sod" layers of interpretation, which understand the Song as guiding the seeker to the soul's perfection in intimate contact with Divinity. But fear not, the plain, manifest meaning of the text with all its allusive allure will not be lost on us. Please bring your own copy of the text (Jewish Publication Society, publishers) to class each week TUESDAY TEXT STUDY with Rabbi Justin David Rabbi David s Tuesday Text Study will be suspended while he is on sabbatical. More information regarding its return will be forthcoming a few months from now. 8

12 TIKKUN OLAM SOCIAL ACTION: HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED Please join us! Last month, we held a successful first Annual Sandra Goldsmith Shabbat on November 21 with reflections about the Jewish ethics of building just and equitable communities and the role of taxes in doing so. After services, our very own Pamela Schwartz facilitated an after-kiddush discussion about the Massachusetts campaign and ways for you to get involved. Your involvement means so much. You can help cover the cost of the Tikkun Olam Committee-sponsored Kiddush for this event and other Tikkun Olam program expenses by contributing to the Tikkun Olam Social Action Fund. This month, we will be making our annual donations to organizations. Grants are made each year in December to meet humanitarian needs locally, in Israel, and--when catastrophe strikes internationally. These are made solely from each year s donations to the Tikkun Olam Grants Fund, (including contributions to the wall tzedakah box in CBI s foyer). You can contribute to either part of Tikkun Olam when you give to CBI. Just put the name of the fund in the memo line (Tikkun Olam Activities or Tikkun Olam Grants Fund). Whichever way you choose to give, your generosity helps us keep social justice at the heart of our Jewish community, where it belongs. Todah raba (thank you)! 14 CBI BOARD MINUTES CBI Board Minutes September 24, 2015 Present: Amy Siege, Gillian Murray Kendall, Jim Sagalyn, Lois Dubin, Justin David, David Kaufman, David Cohen, Norbert Goldfield, Joel Feldman, Mark Brumberg, David Cohen, Mordi Kamel, Johnny Joelson, Stephan Wurmbrand, Alan Berkenwald, David Berkman, Rachel Rubinstein. Executive Director: Ben Cuperman. September minutes approved. Education Committee report: Four new families, no resignations. Lynn Berman, Marla Brodsky, Robert Pleasure and Patricia Greenfield, Alan Sharpe and Nancy Balin. All approved. Financials: collecting much better than last year. Fundraising on par. GK and Alma collecting well. Card access will be installed October, which will help office who won t have to buzz people in. Sound system: still improving, tweaking, but better than in past. Alan is going to examine how fundraising campaigns are doing comparatively, including High Holiday appeal, tickets. By next meeting will have a better idea about how high holiday campaigns are doing. Tikkun Olam Report Upper Valley Jewish Campus (Mordi): Alan, David, Norbert, Mordi on committee, plus consistent membership from LGA and Beit Ahava. See attached letter. There was a consensus of the seven or eight people on large committee (impressive achievement in and of itself). People who met very much in favor of idea of a unified campus with three institutions on it. Federation likes this idea and would also like an office for federation in upper valley. Jewish Family Service is in a difficult financial situation, would like to have a presence in upper valley, from fiscal perspective not likely that they will be significant player. JCC would like a presence in upper valley. Their Jewish membership declining (38% of total membership is Jewish). If they come to upper valley, they are coming to do programming, not to provide athletic facilities. Federation doing demographic study and waiting for results on that; it will be very informative. Committee very enthusiastic about idea of a Jewish campus. Future of Jewish community in UV will be stronger. A win-win. Better for all three institutions. They are recommending to their boards to proceed. LGA board has decided to proceed, depending on their fiscal situation. Beit Ahava hopes to have a decision to proceed or not by December. Question: how do we proceed? Vote to proceed with process? Vote to support further negotiation? Get a sense of the board? Discussion. Funding is crucial. Beit Ahava interested but incumbent on finding funding for next stage. Have yet to determine the exact vision. Options: building addition to LGA. OR upgrade space we have but no additions. Board should make a motion to allow further discussions. That should be as far as our commitment goes at this point. Alan moves: board should hold further discussion, expressing our support for the concept of a combined campus model. Johnny seconds. Discussion. Questions about physical campus what will it look like? Fantasy: buy adjoining property and renovate LGA. Are we allowed to build additions on this property? Where is the funding going to come from? Who takes ownership? Have we explored other communities who have done this? Yes, there are various 14 Continued to next page...

15 Continued from previous page models. We should have a visioning process, and then hire experts. Architecture Study costs about 50,000. Do this before a capital campaign. Building next door can t be used and will have to be knocked down; city already planning for this. We can also use the space we have, and test it out. We all use our spaces at different times; it could work. Question called. Motion: Board supports moving forward with discussion for unified upper valley Jewish Campus that includes Beit Ahava, CBI, and LGA, in a positive manner. 11 in favor. 1 abstention. Motion passes. ALMA report (Jacob) Numbers significantly higher than last year. Projects 60 plus students. 50% increase from last year! 22 new families, 27 new students. Not everyone is a CBI member. Trend is that they join CBI as a result of joining Alma. Strong staff. High Holidays: 400 youth and parents participating in the three services we offered (teen, families, tots). Waiting for final word on federation allocation. No final number yet, but Federation has secured 20,000 to be shared amongst three upper valley synagogues. This is higher than last year. Last year we got 3,000. We will probably get double that this year. So we are approaching parity with lower valley synagogues. We also received the full possible amount from Grinspoon for youth and family work: 15,000. We have not received this full possible amount before. Applause. Questions: Final enrollment number of students will determine final Federation amount. Can Jacob come back in a few months and report on the Bnai Mitzvah class? Are we retaining them? What are we doing to retain them? How to approach people/families who have not joined but come regularly? Jacob feels comfortable talking to families who have been in Alma for a year but not yet joined CBI. Final announcement: interfaith group: Harvesting Hope. October 4: Harvest festival here at farm. This will be biggest event yet on farm, A real interfaith effort. Expecting 500 people. Great opportunity to showcase who we are. Gan Keshet Membership Proposal (Mark): Proposal: the membership committee recommends that we offer a 20% discount on dues to any parents of Gan Keshet students for their first two years of CBI membership. (Does this include families who are already members? No) Motion: 14. Passes. Scheduling Board retreat: sometime in spring? Gillian will plan. Fall Fundraiser (Norbert) Last year reasonably successful (raised 15,000). This year, small number of high value items for auction. Will be a fun party. Respectfully submitted, Rachel Rubinstein CBI BOARD MINUTES 15
