REFORM JEWISH EDUCATION GOALS The goal of Jewish Education within the Reform Movement is the deepening of Jewish experience and knowledge for all liberal Jews, in order to strengthen faith in God, love of Torah, and identification with the Jewish people through involvement in the synagogue and participation in Jewish life. We believe that Judaism contains answers to the challenges and questions confronting the human spirit, and that only a knowledgeable Jew can successfully discover these answers. EDUCATION AND YOUTH COMMITTEE Programs for children in Religious School and Youth Activities are aligned under the direction of the House of Learning Committee (HOL). Advocate for the children of Temple Beth El. Set goals, agenda and activities for future education and youth programs. Insure that necessary funds are available for top quality programs. Instill a love of Judaism in our children and their families. The HOL supports the vision for our education programs, reviews and determines policies, recommends the budget, and acts as a sounding board for new ideas and programs. Temple members interested in serving on this committee should contact Karyn Hoffman, VP of Education or Robin Eisenberg, Reisenberg@tbeboca.org, Director of Jewish Learning and Living. OUR FACULTY Our faculty consists of temple members and nonmembers affiliated with the Reform Movement and other branches of Judaism. Some teach as a vocation, all teach at Temple Beth El as an avocation. Some are parents, yet all are students. We are proud of the respect all of our professionals have won in the TBE and larger communities, and we are equally grateful to have them on our team. Our staff is open to your involvement, and in fact, sees your family s participation as integral to our goal of creating Jewish memories and experiences from which your child can draw as he/ she grows into an adult faced with choices of his/ her own. We invite you and your child to share ideas with our faculty all year long. 3

JUDAIC CURRICULUM The curriculum is designed to engage the student, allowing him/ her to discover an individual sense of Jewish self. In addition to classroom learning, art, computers, drama, library, and music enhance the learning process. KINDERGARTEN is the time for discovery- Discovery about the holidays, the synagogue, the beginning of the Torah and God. FIRST GRADE is a time of exploring- Exploring Shabbat, being Jewish and our Matriarchs and Patriarchs. SECOND GRADE utilizes the Chai curriculum from the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ). It is organized around 3 pursuits: Torah, Avodah and Gemilut Hasadim, which translate into study, worship, and acts of loving-kindness in addition to an introduction of Israel. THIRD GRADE focuses on the Ten Commandments and Israel. FOURTH GRADE explores the Jewish life cycle. These students also learn how Jewish values help us become menshen (good people). FIFTH GRADE studies Jewish history focusing on prophets and their wisdom and culminates in a campaign of Run a Prophet for President. SIXTH GRADE is an opportunity for the students to explore their relationship with God and Israel. HEBREW CURRICULUM KINDERGARTEN AND FIRST GRADE begin with an introduction to Hebrew letters and language with an emphasis on daily and holiday vocabulary through hands-on experiences. SECOND GRADE is the start of the building blocks of language. Students are introduced to all of the Hebrew letters and vowels, and by the end of the year are able to decode simple words and/or phrases. THIRD GRADE concentrates on learning the names and sounds of the Hebrew letters and vowels. By the end of the year, students are able to read basic prayers. FOURTH GRADE THROUGH SIXTH GRADE concentrates on reading and How can I help my child if I can t read Hebrew? Did you know Temple Beth El offers adult Hebrew classes and other educational programs? Contact the Clergy Office for course times. comprehension of basic blessings and the Shabbat morning service. ONLINE INTEGRATED Second through Sixth Grade Hebrew Curriculum has an online component through Behrman House s Online Learning Center (OLC). The OLC is used to track student progress through both in-class enrichment and at-home support. CLASS PLACEMENT Students beyond third grade who are new to Temple Beth El should make an appointment with the Director of Jewish Learning and Living to determine appropriate class placement. Classes are available for students who need additional help, as well as those with particular learning needs. We are happy to meet with you to discuss any specific requirements your child may have. PRAYER SKILL DEVELOPMENT Emphasis is on the development of comprehension and mastery of the prayers that make up our worship service. Students in Grades 4 through 6 use our temple prayer book. PRACTICE Each child is expected to practice reading aloud at home 20 minutes each day. PARTICIPATION AND REINFORCEMENT Every class is given the honor of participating in leading a Friday Night Shabbat Service with the congregation. This is an essential part of our Hebrew program. Please make every effort to attend, and encourage your child s participation in this service. Dates are found in the calendar portion of this handbook for your convenience in advance planning. EVALUATION Hebrew students in grades 3 through 6 will have ongoing evaluations. s and progress reports will reflect your child s progress based on achievement of goals covered by the class. 5 DERECH TORAH 7TH 10TH GRADE DINNER Students are welcome to join their friends for a community dinner that begins at 6:30pm just before classes! (Please note this is every other week for 10th grade Confirmation students) 7TH GRADE Seventh grade students meet every other Tuesday night for the core class at the Beck Family Campus from September January and the Schaefer Family Campus from February May from 7:00pm 8:30pm. During this time they will focus on their Jewish relationship with their community, themselves and with God. In addition they are expected to earn credits through a plethora of other options including, but not limited to, classes at both campuses, independent studies, TBE and Federation events. The options are only limited by a student s imagination! If you have an idea for a way to earn credit please be in touch with the school office, to discuss the options! 7TH GRADE RETREAT As many students look forward to their Bar or Bat Mitzvah it is such an important time for them to develop strong connections to the Jewish community. The 7 th grade retreat will focus on forging those bonds that will keep the kids involved with Jewish life. Date: December 12-13, 2015 Location: TBD 8TH & 9TH GRADE Eighth and ninth grade students meet every other Tuesday night at the Beck Family Campus from September January and the Schaefer Family Campus from February May from 7:00pm 8:30pm. For the first 30 minutes the students participate in community time during which they will participate in large group activities with all students from seventh ninth grade. The Derech Torah Program for our 8th and 9th grade students has undergone some exciting changes for the upcoming school year. This year, we will explore topics that are all the buzz in the news through a Jewish lens. Come learn about the Environment, Black-Jewish relations, the Holocaust and Israel, and Jews in Hollywood with your rabbis, teachers and guest presenters. Each topic includes hands-on memorable experiences that will change the way you think about yourself and the world. 8TH & 9TH GRADE RETREAT All accommodations are quad occupancy and the rooms have two double beds. In order to attend a retreat the student s family must be current in all Temple financial obligations or have spoken with the Executive Director. Date: TBD Location: TBD 10TH GRADE (CONFIRMATION) Confirmation is a religious experience during which students affirm their commitment to Judaism as their cultural and religious identity. The Confirmation class will explore contemporary and relevant issues through the lens of the Ten Commandments. In addition, students will explore American-Jewish history by tracing the roots of their own family history. The vehicle for communicating the knowledge and feelings about being Jewish is the Confirmation Service, which students create as their commitment to the covenant with the Jewish people. This service is written by members of the class in consultation with the Rabbis and Educators. Confirmation students are expected to attend a minimum of ten Shabbat or Festival services which may be at any synagogue. This attendance should be recorded in the weekly sign in sheets outside the sanctuary. The 10th grade Confirmation class meets every Tuesday night at the Beck Family Campus from September January and the Schaefer Family Campus from February May from 7:00pm 8:30pm. 5

DERECH TORAH CONFIRMATION RETREAT AND COMMUNITY BUILDING The feeling of community, as well as respect for self and others as people and Jews, are integral parts of our Religious School objectives. The Confirmation Class retreat weekend will be scheduled with these objectives specifically in mind. The Confirmation Retreat, as well as an additional community building Sunday program is a requirement for the celebration of Confirmation. In the event that a student is unable to attend, an alternative academic project and make-up retreat is required, which must be approved by the clergy. In order to attend the retreat, the student s family must be current in all Temple financial obligations or have spoken with the Executive Director. Retreat Weekend: February 5-7@ Lake Wales 11TH & 12TH GRADE (JOURNEY THROUGH JUDAISM) Journey Through Judaism is an opportunity to continue learning after Confirmation, focusing on the transition into college life and Jewish adulthood. The class will explore the values and experiences that American Jews encounter both at home and in early adulthood. As part of the experience, the class will spend a Shabbat evening at Hillel at a local university, and have two opportunities to travel with the class. In order to attend this trip, the student s family must be current in all Temple financial obligations or have spoken with the Executive Director. Journey Through Judaism will meet once each month on a Tuesday evening, at the Beck Family Campus in the Fall and at the Schaefer Family Campus in the Spring. Cost, itinerary and deposit information for both trips will be available during the first week of class. 11TH & 12TH GRADE (TRIP) New York City (April 14-18) With our friends from Beth Sholom of Miami Beach we will explore New York City! Some highlights to look forward to: Broadway show, Times Square, Crown Heights tour, Ground Zero, Lower East Side, NYU tour, Shabbat at local synagogue. 6

SPECIAL NEEDS At Temple Beth El, we pride ourselves in creating a program that is open to all individuals and believe that every child is entitled to a Jewish education. We have established a program to help students with special learning needs in the area of Hebrew leading to the celebration of Bar or Bat Mitzvah. If your youngster would benefit from an individualized learning plan, please contact Robin Eisenberg so that an appropriate individualized educational plan can be developed to insure your child has a meaningful and rewarding educational and social experience. INDEPENDENT STUDY There are students who, from time to time, are unable to attend the regularly scheduled educational program for their grade. If your family has a conflict it doesn t mean your child cannot participate meaningfully in his/her Jewish education. Please contact the office to speak with the Director of Jewish Learning and Living so we can develop a program with your family s needs in mind. FAMILY EDUCATION Family Education at Temple Beth El is an opportunity to learn, grow, share and experience the joy of Jewish education together with your children. Both children and parents will come to Temple Beth El s Schaefer Family Campus one Sunday assigned to their grade. During that session, the family will take part in a shared interactive lesson with time also scheduled for the parents to learn from a member of our clergy team. The learning experience always reflects the curriculum that is being learned in the classroom. This program happens in place of your child s regular class that Sunday. It is our expectation that all families will participate and we plan and order supplies accordingly. If you have a concern please be in touch. Please see the school calendar for your child s scheduled date. reminders will be sent closer to the date. TZEDAKAH Giving comes from the heart. In accordance with Jewish tradition, we ask each family to teach children to set aside a certain monetary contribution each week for Tzedakah. Tzedakah will be collected each week on Sunday. BAR / BAT MITZVAH PROGRAM PREREQUISITE: RELIGIOUS SCHOOL EDUCATION All students are required to successfully complete 4 years of Hebrew and religious education or its equivalent prior to the celebration of Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Included in the four year Religious School requirement is the satisfactory completion of all academic work and regular attendance. At the age of thirteen, the student is barely able to grasp the true importance and significance of Jewish teaching. Therefore, students must be enrolled and have regular attendance during the school year of Bar/Bat Mitzvah, and are expected to continue through Confirmation, our 10th grade program and Journey Through Judaism in 11th and 12th Grade. We look forward to partnering with our parents in communicating this expectation from the beginning of your child s Religious School enrollment. REQUESTING DATES DATE ASSIGNMENT Dates may be requested beginning in January three years prior to Bar/Bat Mitzvah year. For example, beginning in January 2016 requests for calendar year 2019 will be accepted. Dates are officially assigned during the summer of each year, two and onehalf years in advance of the upcoming calendar year. Upon acceptance of the assigned date, a non-refundable $100 deposit will be required to secure the date. The deposit will be applied to the Bar/Bat Mitzvah fee. In order to be assigned a date, the student must be registered in Religious School and the student s family must be current in all Temple financial obligations or have spoken with the Executive Director. NOTE: Those requesting Havdalah services will be required to continue their celebration at Temple Beth El. J. JOLT It has been said that it takes a village to raise a child. In today s fast-moving world, with so many messages being beamed out to our youth, how do we ensure that we are exposing our young people to the role models and influences that can truly inspire them? How can we make sure that they feel connected and excited to live a life guided by Jewish values? Join Temple Beth El and the Union for Reform Judaism on the Jewish Journey of a Life Time (J-Jolt). This exciting new pilot project utilizes the Bar/Bat Mitzvah experience as a means to deepen the connections between families, particularly our young people, and those role models who can be major positive influences on their lives. J-Jolt (Jewish Journeys of a Life Time) is an opportunity to create an intimate, meaningful exchange between a young person and older generations, add memorable, impactful new personal rituals and customs to the Bar/Bat Mitzvah experience and to motivate a cadre of new leaders within your congregation and our movement that may not have otherwise been tapped to serve as mentors. 7

SCHOOL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES REGISTRATION, ADMISSION POLICY Our Religious School program begins with children entering kindergarten. (For younger siblings, we also have an Early Childhood program for Together Time through Pre-Kindergarten. Contact the School Office for details.) Registration takes place each spring. Families with children in Kindergarten through Grade Four may register for school as non-members for one year at an increased tuition. ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEMPLE BETH EL YOUTH TEACHER ASSISTANTS Temple Beth El offers post Bar/Bat Mitzvah students the opportunity to serve the temple and to continue close ties with the school. Assistants can help in the office or in the classroom. They can also help with choir and music. All assistants must be enrolled in and attending Derech Torah, or an approved independent study program. We have found these young people to be wonderful resources and excellent assets as well as role models for younger students. Both campuses will have Teacher Assistants in K-6th grade classrooms. Contact the school office for more information at SHIR JOY 3RD THRU 6TH GRADERS Like to sing? Enjoy making noise? We ll teach you to make lots of noise and not get in trouble. Come to Shir Ruach with Lori Shapiro and see how it s done!!! Contact Nina Finkel for more information at Nfinkel@tbeboca.org. DISMISSAL TIME In order to facilitate safe and orderly dismissal please note that students may only be dismissed early on Sundays until 11:30am. After that time parents must wait until the regular 12:00pm dismissal. TRAFFIC PATTERNS AND PARKING Health and safety are our number one priority. During our drop-off and dismissal hours, it is with your safety in mind that we urge you to cease from using your cell phones while driving your vehicle in our parking lot and in the carpool line. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding in the very important matter. At the beginning of the year, we ask that you notify the school office and your child as to where you want to pick them up to avoid confusion and possible tears. At Temple Beth El Schaefer Family Campus: South Lot Park and Walk. Parents are asked to park their car and proceed to their child s classroom. It is EXTREMELY important that the south lot is not used for carpool. This is for the safety of all of our children. At Temple Beth El Beck Family Campus: We have two options for drop off and pick up everyday that we have Religious School. Carpool - Parents are asked to stay in their car to proceed through the designated carpool line. Park and Walk - Parents are asked to park their car and proceed to their child s classroom. HIGH HOLY DAY YOUTH PROGRAMS Offered on our Temple Beth El Schaefer Campus Only Kindergarten thru 2nd grade Thanks to the generosity of Women of Reform Judaism and Temple Brotherhood we are proud to offer our High Holy Days Youth program that will give your child the opportunity to have a wonderful, enriching, hands-on High Holy Day experience. This program will start and finish simultaneous to adult morning worship services. In order to properly staff this program, advance registration is a must. The cost is $5.00 per child, per program. 9

Please follow directions and be courteous to our teachers as they staff the parking lot. They are there to ensure the children s safety. Also, as appealing as it might be, TBE policy states that students may not play on our playground at dismissal, even under the supervision of a parent. DRESS CODE When your child dresses for Religious School, their choice of clothing should reflect the value of B tzelem Elohim, that we are created in God s image. In an effort to create an atmosphere of kedusha, or distinctiveness, while we are studying Torah and prayer, the following clothing is not appropriate and should not be worn to class at any time: torn jeans, short shorts or cut-offs, t-shirts with slogans of any kind, halter tops or bare midriffs, or shirts with spaghetti straps. ATTENDANCE AT RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Your child s regular attendance is one of the most important factors determining the success of his/her educational experience, as well as that of the entire class. While students are expected to make up work in the event of an absence, students who do not meet proficiency requirements due to excessive absence will not be promoted to the next grade. Lack of proficiency in Hebrew may also affect the Bar/Bat Mitzvah process. Excessive absence can be made up by completing missed assignments to the satisfaction of the teacher and/or Director of Jewish Learning and Living and/or by hiring a tutor (at the parents expense) to cover material missed. As excessive tardiness also affects your child s learning experience, please make every effort to drop him or her off on time. Please discuss extenuating circumstances that will affect your child s attendance with the Director of Jewish Learning and Living. APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR Just as is expected in any school setting, we will treat each student with respect for his/her individuality. We expect students and parents to show the same respect to administration, teachers, fellow students, and school staff at the temple. We will not tolerate disruption to the classroom or destructive behavior on any school campus. Parental cooperation is essential in assuring your child s success in Religious School. We will contact you if your child s behavior is not acceptable. SERVICE EXPECTATIONS As part of the education process, worship experiences are considered an integral component of each child s experience. We hope that by the time our children reach adulthood, they will have developed the spiritual openness and the prayer skills, which enable them to find meaning and value in the Jewish worship service. Credit will be given for all services including Friday nights at 6:00 PM and/or 7:30 PM; Saturdays at 9 AM, 10:30 AM, 11:30 AM and 6 PM; all festivals (evening and morning). Check your school calendar, website and Chronicle for exact weekly times. Unfortunately, we are unable to record High Holy Day services due to multiple locations and service times. Worship services are held at TBE s Schaefer Family Campus. Each student will be responsible for recording attendance in the sign-in notebook in the foyer. The school office will track attendance. The following expectations have been approved by the House of Learning Committee: Kindergarten to Grade 2: 4-6 services Grade 3 to 5: 6-8 services Grade 6 to 9: 8-10 services Confirmation Grade 10: 10 or more services Students attending Shabbat and festival services beyond stated expectations will be honored at the end of the year. It is the students responsibility to sign in at services in order to receive credit. Credit for services at other synagogues is also given. Please contact the school office to log a service attended at another temple. VISITORS IN OUR SCHOOL Temple Beth El encourages parents to take an active interest in school. You should feel free to visit the school and to observe classes. We ask parents to comply with the following rules, which pertain to such visits. Parents are asked to call the Director of Jewish Learning and Living prior to a visit. There are certain times when a class visit is inappropriate due to special programming or particular curricular needs. If a conference is desired with a particular teacher, please arrange for it in advance. It is not appropriate to begin a discussion when the teacher is beginning class, leaving school or taking the class to an activity. All visitors are asked to check in at the school office so that we can monitor our campus security. The school realizes that many times students would like to bring friends to visit school and attend classes. Our program is designed to build a sense of community in the classroom and outside guests are a disruption. Should a particular need arise, visitors will be admitted to class only when requests are initiated by the parent to the Director of Jewish Learning and Living prior to the intended visit. Should friends wish to inquire about Religious School or temple membership, please have them contact Membership Services at for an appointment and tour. 10
