2 Kabbalah4All Transliteration Guidelines Please note that transliteration guidelines are different according to each culture and also within each movement of Judaism. We have developed these guidelines for use with our transliterated documents. They may or may not apply to transliterations put out by other movements including the various organizations teaching Kabbalah. a ai e ei i o oy u ch g tz as in father as in aisle as in red as in eight as in pizza as in no as in toy as in tune as in Bach in German (strong sound from the throat) as in give as in lots typically adds an EH sound after a consonant, this is known as a Shva Na or pronounced Shva as in the word Sh ma. - a dash is simply used to aid in pronounciation, usually if two like vowels follow each other, as in the word da-at. In Hebrew, the accent generally falls on the last syllable, however it sometimes falls somewhere else in the word. In our transliteration, when the syllable falls somewhere else other than the last syllable, that stressed syllable will be underlined. Example: Melech. Hebrew Rules The following are some of the Hebrew rules you may notice in our siddurim (connection books). Kj l«n lçk In Hebrew, the accent generally falls on the last syllable, however it sometimes falls somewhere else in the word. Whenever a syllable other than the last is accented, a meteg (the vertical line under the first letter) will appear. The masoret above the letter Chaf indicates that this is a Kamatz Katan, which is pronounced as o ; in this example the word is kol. Egœ n U i The rafe above a letter indicates it is a Shva Na. This example is pronounced yism chu. Note that the rafe does not appear above the first letter of a word that has a Shva as that is ALWAYS a Shva Na. Please do not publish or distribute without permission. All prefaces to prayers written and adapted by David Aharon L. Curtis for Kabbalah4All. Translated by David Aharon. 3 rmvih trypc ABOUT THE Back in the days of the Holy Temple, our ancestors would bring a barley offering on the second day of Pesach. This was called the "Omer" (literally, "sheaf") and in practical terms would permit the consumption of recently-harvested grains. Starting on the second day of Pesach, the Torah says it is a mitzvah every day to "count the Omer" -- the 50 days leading up to Shavuot. This is an important period of growth and introspection, in preparation for the holiday of Shavuot which arrives 50 days later. Shavuot is the day that our ancestors stood at Mount Sinai to receive the Torah, and as such required a seven-week preparation period. The commentators say that we were freed from Egypt only in order to receive the Torah and to fulfill it. Thus we were commanded to count from the second day of Pesach until the day that the Torah was given -- to show how greatly we desire the Torah. The revelation of Pesach was unearned; we weren't up to attaining the level of spiritual elevation to which the Creator raised us. Inasmuch as the Exodus and the Redemption were events that required no input on our parts -- we passively experienced being freed from spiritual bondage just as we experienced our physical release from Egyptian slavery -- and a Divinely implanted spirituality was sufficient to provide the underpinnings of these events. On the other hand, the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai required our active cooperation and participation. We had to resolve to dedicate ourselves to its observance in order to make its acceptance possible. Receiving the Creator s Torah was not something wonderful that could merely happen to us, like the emancipation. The acceptance of the Torah amounts to the establishment of an eternal covenant. A covenant is a negotiated agreement that requires two active participants. Remember that days start on the evening, not in the morning as in the Gregorian calendar; therefore the Omer is counted every evening after nightfall (approx. 30 minutes after sunset). If a person neglected to count the Omer one evening, he should count the following daytime, but without a blessing. Each day of the Omer is related to a different level of the Kabbalistic S firot (emanations of the Tree of Life), the emanations through which the Creator interacts with the world. Each of the seven weeks is associated with one of seven S firot, and each day within each of the seven weeks is associated also with one of the same seven Sefirot -- thus creating 49 permutations. Each day during the Omer, we focus on a different aspect of the S firot, with the hopes of attaining spiritual improvement in that specific area. The seven weeks, which represent these emotional attributes, further divide into seven days making up the 49 days of the counting. Since a fully functional emotion is multidimensional, it includes within itself a blend of all seven attributes. Upon conclusion of the 49 days we arrive at the 50th day -- Mattan Torah. After we have achieved all we can accomplish through our own initiative, traversing and refining every emotional corner of our psyche, we then receive a gift ('mattan' in Hebrew) from above. We receive that which we could not achieve with our own limited faculties. We receive the gift of true freedom -- the ability to transcend our human limitations and touch the divine. 3

4 Kabbalah teaches about the 50 gates of negativity. Once the 50 th gate is reached, there is no way back, the battle is lost. With the mitzvah of counting the 49 days, known as S'firat Ha-Omer, we are invited on a journey into the human psyche, into the soul. There are seven basic emotions that make up the spectrum of human experience. At the root of all forms of enslavement, is a distortion of these emotions. Each of the seven weeks between Pesach and Shavuot is dedicated to examining and refining one of them. They help us materialize the Light into our physical world, by attaining our surrounding Light first, followed by the inner Light. This is the preparation for Shavuot. The seven emotional attributes are: 1. Chesed - Loving-kindness. 2. Gevurah -- Justice and discipline. 3. Tiferet - Truth, Harmony. 4. Netzach - Endurance. 5. Hod - Humility. 6. Yesod - Foundation, Bonding. 7. Malchut - Sovereignty. 4
