4 RABBI'S MESSAGE The Talmud (Taanit 29a) states ke-shem she-mishe-nikhnas Av mema atin be-simcha, kakh mi-shenikhnas Adar marbim be-simcha Just as the Hebrew month of Av unleashes a reduction of happiness, Adar commences an increase of it. Yet whereas in the case of Adar, with the anticipated succession of Pesach, that cheer continues unabated into Nissan, with regard to Av, the cheerlessness does a reverse-face midway through the month. Only six days after we observe Tisha B Av the saddest day on the Jewish calendar do we also celebrate Tu B Av what the Talmud (ibid 30b) considers the year s happiest. While the Talmud does not directly take note of this irony, it does further contribute to it with its explanation of the respective occasions. The Talmud identifies, among some other possible causes, two decidedly striking factors for the calamities of Tisha B Av: Sinat Chinam gratuitous hatred (Yoma 9b) and Shelo Berkhu ba-torah Techila, that Jews did not recite the proper blessing before Torah-study, generally understood to reflect some underlying deficiency in their attitude toward Talmud Torah (Nedarim 81a). Tu B Av, on the other hand, is a festival of Jewish love and unity, when marriage between tribes first became permitted and women tried to recruit husbands in a leveled playing field, and marked an opportunity to devote more time to Talmud Torah. Thus, Tu B Av not only projects a diametrically opposite mood, but in a sense is aimed to correct precisely that which we mourn on Tisha B Av. This year in particular highlights the chiastic relationship between Tisha B Av and Tu B Av with the Siyum Hashas of Daf Yomi taking place just between these two dates. Over 90,000 Jews assembled at MetLife stadium in New Jersey, along with satellite connections to cities across the worldwide Jewish community, to celebrate the completed study of the Babylonian Talmud one double-sided page a day for 2,711 consecutive days. Ashrei ayin raatah kol eleh how beautiful it was to witness the convergence of often-distinct and disparate groups, uniting in person and spirit, to share our common heritage the study of Torah. PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Dear Congregants, On behalf of the Executive Board, I hope you are enjoying this beautiful summer weather with your families. Here at Young Israel of New Hyde Park, there have been some wonderful events in the past few months. After having an exciting Journal Dinner honoring our dear members back in March, we had a very memorable Yom HaShoah program at our Shul in April. Our guest speaker for the evening was Mr. Leo Zisman, a Holocaust survivor who, through his warm words, planted the seed of Emunah in each one of us. Mr. Zisman with his tale of survival, showed us that we should never give up hope, no matter how gloomy the situation. The second Shabbos in May, we had the pleasure of hosting the Yachad Rayim group in our community. The Shul was buzzing! With their presence, these young people brought words of Torah and Nachas to our community. With great pride and joy, I am happy to announce our Mikvah project, which I believe is one of the most beautiful Mikvaot built in our area, is going through the process of obtaining the Certificate of Occupancy by our professional expediter. After completing this step, all we need is rain! At this tremendous milestone, on behalf of our Mikvah committee, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of our members, friends and families, and also the organization Mikvah USA for endless support and generosity toward this Mitzvah of Taharat Mishpacha. I am also pleased to inform our friends that we shall start the Elevator project that our late beloved member, Mrs. Louella Glick a h, initiated. This project shall be named after her, as she worked hard to make it happen for our Shul. You may show your support for this cause by sending in your donations and have it ear-marked as The Elevator Fund. I look forward to seeing you all in our Shul and at our future events. David Rouhani President Message continued top of page 5 4
5 FOOD CERTIFICATES Food certificates are a wonderful and simple way to help raise funds for the shul's capital improvements. Each member family has an annual obligation to purchase certificates in the following amounts: Single: $600 Family: $1,200 Single Senior: $500 Couple Senior: $1,000 Those who don't meet their obligation will be charged 5% of that amount. Gift cards are available for our area's three major supermarkets, Pathmark, Waldbaum s, and Stop & Shop. We also have Mazur s and A & A Gourmet. Lastly there are Chessed Dollars that are accepted by many kosher establishments. RABBI'S MESSAGE continued This simcha of international proportions was made even more special bracketed by two siyumim that we celebrated back home at YINHP, the completion of Yershalmi Berakhot by the Sunday-morning shiur and Moed Katan by the pre-shacharit study group. We hope that the excitement generated by these events will inspire even greater aspirations for and accomplishments in Talmud Torah both on the global and local levels. May we merit the blessings of the concluding passage of several of the tractates in the Talmud that Torah scholars and scholarship lead to increased peace in the world. Bivrakha, Lawrence Teitelman YINHP Clothing Pantry ( Gemach ) To donate new or gently-used clothes, women s hats, or plastic or wooden hangers to benefit needy families in Queens and Nassau Counties, please contact please contact Clothing Gemach Coordinator Mark Krieger at LIKE US ON FACEBOOK They can be purchased from: Ilene Horowitz , Paige Finkelstein , Art Feldman , Rena Gombo , or the shul office. 6 ISRAEL ADVOCACY PROGRAM Yom Hashoah program for the community, co-sponsored by National Council of Young Israel, Northeast Queens Jewish Community Council, Queens Jewish Community Council, and Bell Park Jewish Center Leibel (Leo) Zisman gives the keynote address, recounting the many miracles of his survival of the Holocaust and his faith in G-d that facilitated his courage during these most trying times. Participants recite a Psalm and Kaddish, in memory of the 6,000,000 Jews who died during the Holocaust. Holocaust survivor Alex Hershenbaum lights a memorial candle. YINHP Siyum of Yerushalmi Masekhet Berakhot Jerry Gombo, Rabbi Teitelman, Al Dresner, Sid Fine, and (via cellphone) Jeff Grunfeld recite the Hadran and concluding prayers upon completion of Tractate Berakhot of the Jerusalem Talmud. Some seventy people celebrate this milestone at the Seudat Mitzvah dinner, where Rabbi Tzvi Kramer was the guest speaker. 6
