1 Issue Number 5 May 2018 Iyar-Sivan 5778 Sinai Scroll Confirm Your Commitment On May 19, I will have the pleasure of joining seven wonderful young people on the bimah of Temple Sinai as they confirm their commitment to Judaism and to living a Jewish life. The students in this year's Confirmation class Madison Berman, Victoria Berman, Chris Edmiston, Dora Elice, Caleb Gupta, Blake Land, and Chaya Pearlman have been on a lot of adventures together that have been inspiring for me and, I hope, for them, too. This year, we spent an afternoon at the State House in Providence to meet with lawmakers and statewide elected officials. We ate at a kosher restaurant in Pawtucket and learned about the laws of kashrut. We visited an orthodox synagogue and experienced a different kind of Jewish community. We traveled to Washington, D.C., to visit monuments and to reflect on what it means to be a Jew in the United States today. And we met for three half-day retreats to explore our personal connections to Judaism and to consider the Jewish future. It is a longstanding tradition in Reform congregations to celebrate the Confirmation of high school students in the spring on Shavuot. Our Confirmation service on May 19 at 7:00 PM is also the Temple's service for the evening of the festival. The connection between Shavuot and Confirmation is deeper than just the time of the year. Shavuot is the holiday that marks the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. It is a fitting holiday for young people to stand before the congregation to confirm that they, too, are recipients of Torah, ready to accept it, interpret it, apply it to their lives, and to make it their own. So, let me invite you to come, too, to confirm your connection to Torah and the Jewish people. I guarantee that the personal statement from Madison, Victoria, Chris, Dora, Caleb, Blake and Chaya will inspire you, challenge you, and compel you to think about what it means to you to be a Jew in the twenty-first century. Join us. 2 From the Cantor s Desk By Cantor Deborah Johnson Another year done! Since we start our New Year in September, (September 29) and the summer is a bit lazy, I am soon to bring my second year at Temple Sinai to a close. It seems like I ve been here forever, and I hope it s the same for you (in a good way!). I love all of you, from our rabbi, to our Dottie, to our musicians, to our educators, to our b nei mitzvah kids, to our committees, to our special minyans, and to the congregants at large. I hope you know how special Temple Sinai is! I have not been at a warmer, more welcoming, and more musical Temple. Even when, one day, I am not on the bimah, I plan to join you in the pews. And by the way, I hope you can plan to join us this summer for especially casual and intimate worship services in the chapel and out in nature. What could be better?! At the same time, we are bringing our relationship with our beloved Cantor Emeritus, Remmie Brown, to something of a close. Remmie and Margie have sold their house in Pawtucket and plan to spend most of the year in Florida, where they have joined another Temple Sinai. However, we ll have one last chance to see and hear Cantor Remmie in action. On June 1, Remmie and I will present the last in the series of Remmie concerts. This one, a Broadway shabbat, will make you laugh, cry, and absolutely sing along! I guarantee you will hear at least one of your favorites! Come be a part of the choir, and let s give our Remmie a hearty sendoff. See you at services! The School Scene By Rabbi Sol Goodman and ready to learn. On The Teaching of Hebrew Once a year, my Rabbi devoted a lengthy sermon to the value of Jewish Education. As our school year draws to a close, I would like to add a few thoughts to his. First, we are indebted to our magnificent teaching staff who regularly give of their knowledge, understanding, and passion to ensure that our children have the best possible experience at our Temple School. Our mix of experience and enthusiasm, tradition and innovation, basic foundation and new technology has made our school second to none. Our children come to class at the end of long school days, always with smiles. We are so proud of them! And we are grateful to you, their parents, for doing whatever it takes to make sure that they arrive on time We teach Hebrew, not just so our kids will be able to read prayers. Students first learn to read Hebrew. Once that skill is achieved, Hebrew becomes the gateway to conversation, music, history, customs, and tradition. That is what we teach, and why we teach. All year long, Hebrew has been the key to our students understanding of their entire Jewish experience and its legacy. They have not just practiced letters and prayed in Hebrew; they have sung in Hebrew, sat, stood, jumped, run, twirled, danced, and played in Hebrew. They have eaten foods with Hebrew names and learned about Jewish heroes with Hebrew names. They have discovered how Hebrew has found its way into their technology, their lives and their history. Hebrew is not just for reading any more, it asks to suffuse our lives with its wonder and magic. So, please continue to support your child s Hebrew education. Register for next year. And take the time find to out what Hebrew learning is really all about. B Shalom Rabbi Sol Goodman 2
