ANSWER KEYS for BRACHOS Teacher s Presentation

INTRODUCTION 1 You should look into it and see if you can get the information that you need to make the correct Bracha. 2 Answers will vary. 3 Answers will vary. 4 Answers will vary. 5 Brachos are very important and we say them so often. MAKING A BLESSING 1...has taken unjustly. 2 Answers will vary. 3 Answers will vary. Student may write: shape, color, smell, feel. 4 Answers will vary. 5 Every item in this world was created for Hashem s glory. The fruit is shouting out the existence of Hashem. By eating a fruit without a bracha we are stripping the world of this glory without replacing it with another form of glorifying Hashem. 6 Each word should be said slowly and clearly. 7 The blessing causes an outpouring of blessings to descend from Above onto the whole of creation. 8 Answers will vary. Student may write: say more slowly, use a text, think about Hashem s wonders before making the bracha. 9 The blessings we make to Hashem. 10 A virtuous person should recite each blessing properly, calmly and with full intent. A person who is truly connected to Hashem realizes the significance of a blessing and recites it slowly and with intensity, treasuring each word for all its beauty and meaning. 11 One who makes brachot does chesed with all of creation, bringing down untold goodness to all of humanity. He is the ultimate giver. By letting brachot slip thoughtlessly out of our mouths, we throw away mines filled with diamonds. 2

12 Answers will vary based on student s age. 36,000 X years the student is over age It is forbidden to do any activity while making a blessing. This would include organizing the table, driving a car, playing with a child, or making motions with your hands and eyes. 14 No, Strictly speaking, walking is not considered an activity in this regard. 15 Answers will vary. 16 A right handed person holds the food in his right hand, a left handed person holds the food in his left hand, answers will vary based on whether the student is a righty or lefty. 17 Answers will vary, it helps with concentration, it ensures you remember if you made the blessing. 18 No, one just needs to be able to hear himself saying the words. 19 Baruch- Blessed are you, you are the source of all blessings Four letter name of Hashem as written-that Hashem is past, present and future Four letter name of Hashem as read-adon Hakol, Master of all Elokeinu-concentrate on the idea that God is בעל הכוחות כולם allpowerful and all capable Melech Ha olam-refers to Hashem s active involvement in every facet of getting this food to me 20 Answers will vary. ONE HUNDRED BLESSINGS 1 King David 2 A hundred Jews were dying every day. 3 The third word in the verse. 4 Yiras Shamayim/ Fear of Heaven 5 Besamim 6 Answers will vary 3

BEFORE-BLESSING 1 No other food satiates like bread. 2 Hadomoh 3 When grain is eaten in an unusual manner such as eating flour one makes a shehakol. 4 Bread is eaten as the mainstay of the meal while bread sticks are eaten as a snack. The sages only designated hamotzee for products which people generally eat as the mainstay of the meal rather than a snack between meals 5 Student may write: תרומה מעשר ראשון מעשר שני חלה בשעת דישה לא תחסום שור בדישו לקט שכחה פאה בשעת החרישה לא תחרוש בשור וחמור יחדיו בשעת הזריעה שדך לא תזרע כלאים 6 The bread is considered the main part of the meal and all the other food is considered secondary to the bread. 7 These need a bracha: Pareve ice-cream Chocolate covered mints Strawberries Chocolate mousse Fresh pineapple 8 Wine 9 It both satiates and intoxicates. 10 Like bread, wine has a special bracha which covers all other drinks that one will have at the meal. This applies as long as one drinks a full cheekful of wine. 11 Noach and Yosef and his brothers 12 A tree where the trunk remains from year to year. 4

13 Situation Make a Ha adama Make a Ha etz Do Nothing Made a ha etz on a pineapple Made a ha adama on a peach Picked a banana out of a fruit bowl made a ha adama and now I want to eat an orange Am in Israel and want to taste a sabra 14 Ha adama 15 Ha adama 16 Shehakol as people do not normally eat peanuts unroasted Answers will vary: Apple, pear, plum There are several answers to this question (ikar vetofel is another answer) but in this section we have seen one, namely, an Israeli and an American eating raw string beans. For one it is normal to eat raw so it is ha adama, for the other it is unusual so it is shehakol. 2. Chocolate 19 Pringles are shehakol because they are made from dehydrated potato granules Popcorn is ha adama because it is whole kernels that are popped open. 20 One does not make a bracha when drinking water to digest some food stuck in one s throat or to take medication. primary -עיקר food 21 secondary -טפלה 22 Whenever you have two foods together where one is primary and the other is secondary, you only make a bracha on the primary food. 23 In the first case the honey is enhancing the flavor of the wine, therefore you still make the bracha Hagafen as you are not interested in the honey itself, but the flavor that it adds to the wine. In the second case you are actually masking the wine flavor with the coke. 5

24 Answers will vary and the bracha will depend on which is more important to the student who is answering the question. 25 Mezonos, the barley because it is one of the five grains on which one makes mezonos. Answers will vary. Student may write: shnitzel, licorice, meatballs, falafel AFTER BLESSING 1 Birkat hamazon is a mitzvah from the Torah. The other two after blessings are called: me ein shalosh, and borei nefashot. 2 The land of Israel and how special it is. 3 4 Answers will vary 5 We learn that a blessing can only take effect on an item that already exists, therefore we leave some leftover bread, or even crumbs on the table during bentching. 6 The Vilna Gaon explains that it is because the produce of the entire world is blessed only through Eretz Yisrael. That s the source of the nourishment. There are other sources as well that the students can use to answer this question. 7 Your Cart (al ha etz) Figs Pomegranates Grapes Friend s Cart (borei nefashos) Apple Kiwi Pears Oranges Pineapple 8 You will make the me ein shalosh on the cookies first. 6

AMOUNT 1 An amount that is the size of an olive, about the size of an ounce or 28cc. 2 4 minutes 3 quarter 4 3fl oz 5 Beigles/Pretzels 12 Rogelach ¾ Apple 1 /6 6 Since hot drinks are usually sipped slowly, no beracha acharona is usually said. 7 Borei nefashos CHANGE OF PLACE 1 Change of place 2 A. Your cell phone rang, so you left the hall to take the call in the street, outside the hall and you continued noshing while taking the call. 3 Since you know you have to go back to bentch, your mind is still connected to that place. So as far as שנוי מקום is concerned, you never have created a change of place. Your mind is still connected to that place, your daat, your intent, is to go back to bentch, and, since you are still conscious of that place, you are not considered to have broken away from that place. Therefore, bread is not subject to the rules of שינו מקום and no new blessing will be required 4 No, the bracha acharona that you make after the second bracha rishona in the new location will also cover the first bracha rishona that you made in the first location. 5 No, one is only required to go back to his original location to make an after blessing in the case of Hamotzei 6 No, since you were all eating together it is not considered shinui makom. 7

7 No, since Bob was already eating bread which is not subject to the laws of shinui makom, as long as he has at least a k zayis of bread at his new location he does not need to make a new bracha. 8 One, Sarah needs to make a new bracha when she gets on the bus but the rules of shinui makom state that she only needs to make an after bracha once, when she is finished with her candy. 9 Yes, By sitting in the car for a four hour drive you were koveiah makom there and now you are moving to a new place when you get out for your picnic. 10 No, If the food is in your mouth the whole time you do not need to make a new bracha. SHEHECHEYANU 1 Who has kept us alive, sustained us and brought us to this time. 2 Shehecheyanu Praises Hashem for having kept us alive physically until this time. Ve Kiyimanu Praises Hashem for sustaining us spiritually; giving us the opportunity to believe in Him and serve Him. VeHigiyanu Praises Hashem for giving us the opportunity to fulfill this particular mitzvah, or in the case of a new fruit or new item, allowing us to take pleasure in this item. 3 No, a fruit that grows throughout the year does not require a Shehecheyanu despite the fact that the individual may not have eaten it for a long period of time. 4 Since oranges are stored and available all year round they do not get a shehechiyanu. 5 Answers will vary 6 Yes, in Israel grapes are only found seasonally. 7 Grapes, strawberries 8 Coconut 9 In the place that coconuts grow, they actually grow all year round. 8

10 All of these fruits, one does not say a shehecheyanu on dried fruit. 11 You do not make the bracha once you are finished. However, if you remember in the middle of eating you should make the shehechiyanu at that time. 12 Upon acquiring an item that is particularly valuable to a person and brings him great pleasure, one should make a shehecheyanu. 13 Yes, As long as it is new and exciting to the person who bought the expensive object he would make a shehechiyanu. It does not matter that it is not a new model. 14 No, one does not make a shehechiyanu on an investment property. 15 C. When you put up the mezuzos. 16 B. When he first sees the baby. 9
