In addition, you should revise punctuation, paragraphing and spellings of words you commonly make mistakes in. Ensure you are able to write in a formal register (slang and colloquial language should usually only be used when writing dialogue). The BBC Key stage 3 Bitesize revision website is helpful for practising reading and writing skills.

You will need to answer some questions in English about the texts, and also translate a section of Latin into English. There will not be any questions on history. There will also not be any questions on Latin grammar, but you will need to recognise the meaning of the noun/adjective endings and verb endings that we have covered this year in order to do the exercises correctly (see below). The exam will be based on Cambridge Latin Book 1. Revision tips There are two key things you need to revise: - You need know the meanings of all the words from your vocabulary lists on all the units in Book 1 you will have a single vocabulary list to revise from. You do not need to be able to write any of these words in Latin, just to recognise their meanings when you see them. - You need to be able to recognise the meanings of the noun/adjective and verb endings when you see them. You will have a grammar revision sheet with a summary of what you need to know for this. For example, you need to be able to recognise when a noun is in the accusative case, and to know that this means that you put the word to the end of the English phrase when translating the Latin, or to recognise that a verb is in the past rather than the present. You only need to be able to understand what these endings mean you will not need to write anything in Latin in the test (except perhaps individual words copied from the text in answer to a comprehension question).

20 Subject: RELIGION AND PHILOSOPHY Exam content: Exam date Duration Content WEDS 9 MAY 1 hour See below REVISION TOPICS Part I Rules and why do we have them? The Ten Commandments may be found in Exodus 20:3 ff. Know the Ten Commandments and be prepared to write about them. They were given to the Hebrew people by Moses from God. After Moses had led them out of slavery in Egypt, they travelled around the wilderness for many years. During that time, Moses went up Mount Sinai where God spoke to him and gave him the Ten Commandments so that the Hebrew people had a guide or set of rules to help them create a good community. The Hebrews were later known as the Children of Israel and the Jews. Read over all the work that we did exploring the wider meaning of the Ten Commandments and be ready to write thoughtful ideas about them make sure that you know your class notes and the activities that you did for each commandment and how they connect with each rule. This part of the exam will focus on your ability to reason and explain. We will show you how to revise this section of your work. Part 2 The Story of Judaism Abraham 4000 years ago a wealthy couple called Abram and Sarai lived in Haran (modern day Iraq). The people there were polytheistic which meant they worshipped many gods instead of just one. One day, God told Abram and Sarai to leave their home in search of the promised land. So aged 75, they left the comfort and security of their life in Haran and set out on their travels. In response to their faithfulness, Abram and Sarai were given new names by God. Abram was called Abraham, which means Father of Nations and Sarai was called Sarah, meaning royal princess. God promised Abraham that even though he was childless, one day his descendants would outnumber the stars in the sky, and live in a land flowing with milk and honey. This promise was called a covenant; the first contract God would make with his people. Abraham and Sarah waited years for a child and began to think that they would never have one. However, in keeping with God s promise, Sarah gave birth to a son at the age of 90. They called him Isaac, which means laughter. One day, Abraham was told by God to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac as a sign of his loyalty to God. With great regret, Abraham took his son Isaac up a mountain to sacrifice him. Just before he could kill Isaac, an angel came down from heaven to stop him. Joseph Joseph was one of 12 sons but was his father s favourite. He also had the power to interpret dreams. As a present, his father gave him a multi-coloured coat. His brothers were so jealous that they attacked him and sold him as a slave to some Egyptians, pretending to their father than he had died. Years later, the Pharaoh of Egypt had a dream that only Joseph could interpret. Joseph told the Pharaoh that there would be seven years of plentiful harvest and then

21 seven years of famine. If they stored all the surplus from the seven years of plenty, then the Egyptians would survive the famine. This is exactly what happened. One day, Joseph s brothers travelled to Egypt looking for food, and were reunited with Joseph, who was now one of the most important men in Egypt. The whole family moved to Egypt to be with Joseph. Moses Since the days of Joseph and his brothers, their family had expanded massively, and there were many Israelites living in Egypt. The Pharaoh at the time felt threatened and so enslaved them all. He then ordered for all the baby boys to be killed. Moses was born at this time, but his mother hid him in a basket and he escaped. He was found by the Pharaoh s daughter who treated him as her own son. However, as an adult Moses killed a man and had to run away from Egypt into the desert, where he met his wife Zipporah. God speaks to him in a burning bush and tells him to go back to Egypt to free the Israelites from slavery. At first Pharaoh doesn t listen, so God sends 10 plagues to Egypt. The last plague was the worst of all the angel of death is sent to kill the firstborn son of every family in Egypt. The Israelites kill sheep and brush the blood above their doors, as a sign for the angel of death to not visit their homes. After this the Israelites are allowed to leave and escape, led by Moses. Esther Long ago, the Jews were invaded by the Persians, who took some of them from Israel to live at their capital, Susa. Two of these people were Esther and her cousin Modercai. The King of Persia was called Xerxes. One day, Xerxes ordered his wife, Queen Vashti, to come to a party he was hosting. She refused and the King felt so humiliated he divorced her. As a result, the King needed a new queen and so his prime minister, Haman, helped to organise a search for a replacement. Haman hated Jews, and particularly Mordercai. Many girls were taken to the King s palace for him to choose from. One of them was Esther. Her cousin Modercai told her she must not let the King know that she was a Jew. Haman continued to plot against Jews, trying to influence the King against them. He had drawn lots (called purim) to decide which day to murder Mordecai and the other Jews. Mordecai heard of Haman s plot and asked Esther for help. Esther risked her life, going to speak to the King uninvited. She told him she was a Jew and that Haman was plotting to kill her people. The King was enraged. He invited Haman to dinner and told him that he knew of his plan. He then ordered him to be hung on the gallows he had built for Mordecai. The Jews were saved. After this, the King issued an order throughout the Persian Empire that Jews should be allowed to defend themselves and that anyone who plotted with Haman would be punished. The Jews now remember this story during the festival of Purim. At this time, the story of Esther is read out in the synagogue and The people listening to the story hiss, stamp and shake rattles when Haman s name is mentioned. Many Jewish children dress up and collect money for charity. It is customary for two items of food to be given to friends at this time Anne Frank June 12, 1929: Anne Frank is born in Frankfurt, Germany. March 1933: Nazis are elected in Germany; they make policies to make life terrible for Jews. Abuse and violence against them gets worse. Summer 1933: The Frank family moves to the Netherlands. May 10, 1940: German forces invade the Netherlands. June 12, 1942: Anne's 13th birthday. She receives her diary as a present from her father. July 5, 1942: Margot Frank (Anne's sister) receives a notice to go to a Nazi concentration camp. July 6, 1942: The Frank family moves into their hiding place which becomes known as the Secret Annex where they hide for over two years. Aug 4, 1944: The Franks are arrested in the Secret Annex.

22 Sept 2, 1944: Anne and the other members of the Secret Annex are sent to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp Despite everything, I believe that people are really good at heart Whoever is happy will make others happy too No one has ever become poor by giving Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy How wonderful it is that no one need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world The final forming of a person s character lies in their own hands Passover To remember the Israelites escape from slavery in Egypt, every year Jews all over the world celebrate Passover. They eat many symbolic foods to remind them of different aspects of the story: - Matzo bread similar to the bread they cooked quickly before leaving Egypt flat as they did not have time to let it rise - Egg new life found in the freedom from slavery - Parsley and horseradish bitter suffering of life in Egypt - Charoset the bricks and mortar used in all the building they did in slavery - Salt water tears of slavery Israel (The Promised Land) Jews view Israel, a small country in the Middle East, as their promised land. They believe that God promised it to their father Abraham hundreds of years ago. However, over the years, Israel has been invaded many times, and the Jews have been forced to leave. Following the Holocaust, Jews began to move back to Israel in the 1940s and make it their homeland. This has led to great conflict with the Arab people, who were living there at the time. Although Israel is now considered to be a Jewish state, it is far from peaceful. 23 Subject: SCIENCE Exam content: Exam date Duration Content Biology Thurs 10 May Chemistry Weds 9 May Physics Fri 11 May 45 MINUTES 45 MINUTES 45 MINUTES See below Exam topics List of topics to revise: Biology 8A Food and Nutrition 8C Breathing and Respiration 8D Unicellular Organisms Chemistry 8E Combustion 8F The Periodic Table 8G Metals and their uses Physics 8I Fluids 8J Light 8K Energy Transfers You can use the summary sheets that have been sent to your school address, your online textbook on your laptop (the grey box at the bottom of each page has the most important points). Don t forget the interactive assignments these can be a good way of testing yourself. If you want to use the internet then BBC bitesize and scibermonkey are good websites. Revison tips 1. Start early so you don't put too much pressure on yourself. Just get SOMETHING done early you can use as a base to gradually increase the knowledge you can remember each day. 2. Starting revision is the hardest part. Work for half an hour, reading, highlighting and making very simple, short summaries of what you read; it will get easier. 3. Working in short bursts of intense concentration is better than sitting there for hours and hours without a break. Get a stop watch or kitchen timer, and set it for 20 minutes. As you see the clock ticking down, try to get as much revision done in those 20 minutes as possible. 4. You will find that you already know most of the information as you will have revised it all once for the end of unit tests so it should all come back to you quite quickly.

24 5. Write down what you know already for each topic as a list or a mind map. Then compare this to the summary sheet and fill in the gaps. 6. Revise with a classmate you could write your own quizzes and test each other, choose topics to teach each other, work out unusual ways to remember facts (e.g. funny pictures, mnemonics) 7. Make certain you learn the key words, definitions and diagram labels. 8. Practise writing out definitions and labelling diagrams. 9. Make sure you can draw graphs, tables and lines of best fit. 10. Remember to bring pens, coloured pencils, a ruler and a calculator to the exam. 11. If you have any problems during your revision ask your teacher to help you or visit a lunchtime clinic to sort out these difficulties. 12. Do not panic in the exam. Read the questions carefully. If you do not understand a question, move onto the next question and come back to it later. Do remember to go back and answer it!
