1 Briarwood Newsletter Briarwood Family Newsletter briarwoodpta.org January 22, 2018 Message from Mr. Lash Kindness Matters The Great Kindness Challenge is off to a great start at Briarwood! To have the greatest impact on our students, we want to engage families and the community in the challenge. I highly recommend downloading the app or visiting The Great Kindness Challenge, and participating in this special week at home. I downloaded the app on my phone and have been having kindness conversations with my two school age children, Drew- 3 rd grade and Charlie- Kindergarten. I encourage you to look at the free kindness checklist/50 kind acts on the app and website. It is a great way to start a conversation with your child. An act of kindness can be as simple as smiling at someone or writing a thank you note and is something that all of us can do. Thank you in advance for helping create a culture of kindness and compassion at Briarwood. The work we do during this special week will only emphasize what we strive to accomplish every day, which is to create a safe and welcoming environment for ALL. 3 It s time for the 2 nd annual Briarwood Trivia Night fundraiser! Come and play for the glory of being the smartest (or the least smart) in all the land. Games, prizes and some surprises throughout the night! Saturday, February 24 th 6:30pm Appetizers and cash/credit bar 7:00pm Trivia begins! Indian Hills Country Club 6847 Tomahawk Road Dress is Casual $40 per person Must purchase ticket in advance by 2/17 Tables will be randomly assigned (you will sit with your spouse or +1). The fun continues after Trivia Night at Tavern in the Village- located in the Prairie Village Shops across Mission Road. 20% of food sales will come back to Briarwood! 4 Fourth Grade Parent Party Saturday, February 10 th! Progressive Dinner is April 21st! Mark your calendars for the evening of April 21 it s Progressive Dinner Time! This annual fundraising event is a long-time Briarwood tradition, and a favorite evening among many. For those who have not participated, it s a fun way to meet and mingle with new and old friends: To kick off the evening, from 6-7:30pm, Briarwood parents convene at one of two designated homes for Appetizers. (Ahead of the event, everyone will receive an invitation to their assigned Appetizer house.) At the Appetizer House, everyone will receive their Dinner House assignments, which are assigned randomly by event organizers. At 7:30pm, everyone heads to one of 15 Dinner Houses for a great meal. After dinner, time to head to the Dessert House for sweet treats and more fun. Cost to participate is $50 per person. Planning is underway now, and we are working to line up appetizer and dinner hosts for the evening s events. Please consider hosting - if you are not sure you want to host by yourself, grab another Briarwood couple and co-host. Would you like to host? 5 MVP Trainings in January and February! Become an MVP and volunteer at Briarwood! We need more MVPs! The SMSD MVP program connects adult volunteers with students for in-school activities, such as mentoring, classroom volunteering, or tutoring. MVP training is required in order to volunteer one-on-one with students outside of the classroom. While no specific skills are required, SMSD does require these volunteers to complete the following steps: 1. Complete an online MVP application at: 2. Attend a MVP training session. 3. Complete a background fingerprint screen. Briarwood will earn.5% Show Your Lancer Pride at the SME Cheer Clinic on Feb. 20 What to do with your kids on the no-school day on Tuesday, February 20 th? Sign them up for the Shawnee Mission East Cheer Clinic! SME cheerleaders will work with your children from 9-11:30am. Anyone is welcome K-8th grade. Participants can then cheer during the girls varsity basketball game that evening at Shawnee Mission East. Walk-in registrations are welcome but may not be guaranteed the requested t-shirt size. See the attachment to the newsletter for more information and the registration form. Send Box Tops: Help Raise Money for Briarwood! Look for the Box Tops logo on your favorite products! Cut out the box tops and send them to school with your child. Briarwood earns money for each box top collected. The more we collect, the more we earn! All those Box Tops really add up. The chart below shows just how much Briarwood could earn!

7 Notes from the Nurse The number of flu cases in our community is on the rise. While we have not had large flu outbreaks in our schools, it is important to know the symptoms of the flu and keep students home if they are ill. People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms: Fever or feeling feverish/chills (It s important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever) Cough Sore throat Runny or stuffy nose Muscle or body aches Headaches Fatigue (tiredness)
