We had a nice turnout for Jewish Heritage night at the Trenton Thunder, despite the threat of rain. I would like to wish mazel tov to the Ferstenberg s on becoming grandparents and the Sacharov s on becoming great grandparents. (different babies) Sadly, Goldie Yudkowitz passed away a few weeks ago. Goldie and Milton were long time members of Young Israel and always involved in the synagogue. You could tell what a special person, Goldie was by the eulogies given by the family members. There is a Chabad Cemetery of Mercer County in Hamilton, which needs some work, both physical and mental. A lot has been done this summer, but there is still more work to be done. Anyone who is interested in volunteering, making a small donation, or finding more about the cemetery, please contact Morty Cohen at Mcohen@labcat.com. Remember helping the deceased is a mitzvah that they cannot pay back to you. Wishing all a L Shana Tova. Charles Miller September 2017 Elul 5778 Volume, Issue Editors: Eleanor Heck Lynda Sacharov VIEW FROM THE BIMAH Holy Sushi Year after year, we show up at Shul on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, promising G-d that we will do better in the coming year than we did in the year that passed. Coming dressed in white, we emulate the angels who are free of sin and innocent as the white driven snow. Looking as pious as can be, speaking holy words sung in holy tunes, standing in a holy place, it s the picture perfect example of purity and sainthood. But who are we fooling? G-d knows that the other 362 days of the year we are not living our lives as we do on those special days. We do give in to temptation every now and then. We don t go to Shul as often as we should, or give tzedakah as much as we should. Nor are we as patient and understanding with those we love, nor as careful with our thoughts, speech, and deeds as we are on the High Holidays when we ask G-d for a blessed year ahead. Does this not make us hypocrites? How can we pretend to be one way when we come face to face with G-d, while living a different reality. Allow me to use an example from a recent conversation I had with one of my children. We were in a restaurant ordering sushi from a menu, when he noticed that some of the rolls were being featured on a large screen above the cash register. 2 Page 2 A View From the Bimah (continued) He remarked how appetizing and scrumptious looking were the rolls on the sharply focused images, and lamented how when ordering from a photo, the food never looks a good as it does on the picture. Aren t these pictures misleading, he asked? In attempting to answer his question, I suggested that perhaps it s not misleading at all. Maybe the idea behind the picture is the restaurant s attempt at portraying the most ideal version of that meal. Does it always come out this way? Certainly not. But every time this choice is ordered, the chef makes an attempt at producing a culinary specimen that is as close to the image as possible. Does he succeed every time? Probably not, but it is a goal that is attempted, even as he knows there are few chances for perfect success. The Baal Shem Tov, founder of the Chassidic movement, taught that everything a person sees or hears is an instruction to him in his conduct in his service of G-d. Thinking back at the conversation with my son, it might provide some insight into our question. Maybe, the message we are sending G-d on these Days of Awe is, though we acknowledge we are not as pious and scrupulous as we ought to be, part of each of us truly wants to be a High Holiday Jew year round. Part of us wants to do the right thing, always. It s just that at times our evil inclination gets the better of us and we let G-d (and ourselves) down. And when it s time to stand before G-d at that special time of year, rather than hypocritical, it expresses an authentic attempt at putting forth the best version of who we are. It s like saying to G-d; If I could, this is what my life would look like. Did you know? Do you need help with checking or placing a Mezuzah? We are happy to offer assistance and guidance related to all aspects of Mezuzot and Tefillin. Mezuzot should be checked twice every seven years to see if they have been affected by adverse weather conditions. Or by folding (which can cause cracks in the letters), or if any other defect has occurred. It is preferable to check Mezuzot which are on the outside of a building more often, due to their vulnerability to the elements. To have your Mezuzot or Tefillin checked or for information, call (609) or rabbi@jewishlawrence.com. G-d accepts our offering and responds, now that you know what you re capable of, go ahead and make this the best year ever. May you be inscribed and sealed in the book of life, for a good and sweet New Year. Rabbi Y. Goldenberg Please return your siddur, chumash and talis to the bookshelf after services.

Urgent Crisis In Houston and Florida Houston and Florida continue to face an unprecedented crisis. Flooding continues to displace many thousands across the greater Houston and Florida communities with more catastrophic flooding still unfolding in certain areas. We pray to G-d that people can get out of danger immediately and begin restoring and rebuilding their lives. If you would like to make a donation to help, you can send a check, payable to the Young Israel - Rabbi s Fund, and indicate how you would like the funds to be used Houston and/or Florida. Please know that 100% of your donation will be used to help those affected by these storms, and are in great need. Thank you very much! Rabbi G BEFORE and AFTER images in Houston of the Same highway!
Page 7 SISTERS IN THE HOOD What does one say when a Ayshes Chayil dies? Goldie Yudkowitz (OBM) was a loving and loved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Goldie was always there for all those who were a part of her life. Goldie was born in 1924 (she was almost 93 years old when she died), she and Milton were married in Goldie survived the Holocaust and has left a legacy of Frum children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Deepest sympathies to Milton and the whole Yudkowitz family. Goldie will be missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. Two new lives have entered the YI family. Kohelet Tehillah made Aydan and Alex parents and Karrie and Norman grandparents. K.T. met the community at a kiddush in her honor. She did a great job of being the center of attention. Lynda and Aaron became great-grandparents with the birth of Delilah, whose Hebrew name, Devorah Pearl, is after Lynda's mother. Proud parents are Delany and husband, DeShawn. Dayna is the grandma. We missed meeting Delilah, but YI celebrated her birth with a kiddush in her honor. I hope we get to meet her soon. Mazel Tov to both families. I have been very lax over the last few months in sending out Yarzheit notices. I am very sorry if it caused any problems. I hope to get my act together after the holidays. Dina has a new kiddush option for us. Look for more info from Dina elsewhere in this newsletter. Of course, the old way is still in effect. Whichever plan you choose, have a Kiddush. I keep a calendar both at home and in Shul. (billcar2@verizon.net) or call(609) to set up a date. I am writing this as Bill and I prepare to take an Alaskan cruise. We are looking forward to seeing bears and all sorts of marine life. We will be home the week before RH. By the time you get this you should have responded to the H/H seating request. Please do not wear any fragrances, as some of us are sensitive to scents. Let's make the holidays pleasant for everyone. There will be lots of children in Shul, please keep them safe by putting the seat and lid down. There is a playroom for children when they are not with you. Feel free to enjoy any open packages or bottles, but if an item is closed, please leave it that way. Thanks. When you pay your yearly YI dues, please write a separate check to Sisterhood for the kiddush assessement. The sale of Shop-Rite gift cards is an ongoing fundraiser. You buy the cards at face value and Shop-Rite gives us a discount -- easiest fundraiser ever. My family and I wish everyone a Happy, Healthy New Year. May you be inscribed for all good things. Carol for Sisterhood
Page 8 Dear Fellow Shul Goer, As the Jewish New Year approaches and we look for ways to improve on what we have done previously, I would like to present the community with an opportunity that could benefit its members: I ll call it the No-Hassle Kiddush Initiative. If you would like to sponsor a Kiddush but you can t (or don t want to!) deal with the headache of shopping, preparing, setting up, etc., no worries. I will do it for you. Yup, you read that correctly. I will prepare your entire Kiddush all you need to do is show up! It s that simple. I will offer you choices of delicious homemade salads and baked goods, pretty platters, tasty deserts, and more. I will even include the paper goods. On the next page, you will find a list of options, as well as other information that you might need. Note: this offer is my own personal initiative. It is in addition to, not in place of, what is currently being arranged by the YI sisterhood. If you were at shul on September 16th, you would have been able to sample a No Hassle Kiddush which was sponsored by Eleanor Heck. If you have any questions, you can contact me: dinagoldenberg@aol.com

Page 10 The Rebbitzin (Dina) has many talents, which in part are evidenced on the previous pages relating to her No Hassle Kiddush Initiative, and on Tuesday evening, September 12th, she conducted a hands-on class for women who wanted to learn how to make challah. Actually, Dina did the hard part by preparing the dough, and then schlepped what appeared to be 15 lbs of it over to the shul where the women were assembled and ready to create their masterpieces. After saying the proper prayer, Dina, along with her talented daughter, Rochele, demonstrated how to properly braid the challah into a rounded shape. She explained that the rounded shape is prepared for Rosh Hashanah to symbolize the circle of life, and a renewal for the New Year. Dina went on further to explain that the round challah represents a crown, since, on Rosh Hashanah we are crowning Hashem as our king. All participants eagerly worked their dough, while laughing and kibitzing with each other. We all had one challahva good time.
Page 11 Ask The Rabbi Is there a question you might like to ask Rabbi Goldenberg? If so, send it to LSach@msn.com. Your answer will appear in the next newsletter. Dear Rabbi, Question: I know that we light candles on Shabbos. Why is it though that we light candles on some holidays, but not others? (soul and body,) thereby fulfilling the purpose for which s/he was created. For more information on this important mitzvah, Answer: Candles are lit at the beginning of each of the Biblical holidays. This means that at each of the festivals mentioned in the Torah, including Shabbat, candles are lit to usher in the holiday. Chanukah has its own special candles, and it's customary to light candles for the night meal on Purim. In addition, some Sephardic Jews light candles on Rosh Chodesh (the beginning of the Jewish month.) Although this isn't part of your question, I would like to mention that one of the reasons candles are so important in Jewish tradition is that they embody the function of the Jew. A candle is made up of a wick, wax, and a flame. The wick is representative of the soul, while the wax is the body. Through the flame of Torah, a Jew has the ability to light up his existence visit library/article_cdo/aid/909006/jewish/ Candle-Lighting-Info.htm, or contact the Rabbi directly. Question: Is the shofar blown every day during the month of Elul? Answer: The shofar is blown every day except on Shabbos and erev (the day that precedes) Rosh Hashanah. This is done so as to confuse the evil forces to think that the day of judgment has already passed, and therefore, we go into Rosh Hashanah with the evil forces caught off guard.
Page 12 Bereavement Services King Solomon said, There is a time for all under the heavens a time to love, a time to journey, a time to plant, a time to reap, a time to rejoice and a time to mourn. In a most loving and caring way and with the greatest sensitivity, Rabbi Goldenberg will make it his business to offer all the comfort, guidance and bereavement support needed. In addition, he will be glad to offer his assistance in preparation, officiating at the funeral, making Shiva services, arranging for the kaddish to be recited, etc. For assistance, or for more information, please call: (609) THIS SPACE HAS TRADITIONALLY LAID OUT LIGHT- ING AND SERVICE TIMES FOR SHABBOS AND YOM TOV.
