22 English translation A long time ago 2. A long time ago, a boat came from the ocean. It came nearer and nearer and in that boat were some people. They came and landed on the beach, they stood there for a while. Those men were the first on Australia. Their skin was black. We now call them Aborigines from Australia. We were here yesterday, today and will be here forever. 4. He was still alive when the father in heaven gave us our culture and sacred rites. They were a big nation, then there were too many people. Some of them went another way, and were all separate and they had different ceremonies. And so now, we have all got separate ways. I will talk about Arnhem Land. Trucks and cars and all the balanda things were not seen at that time. An ancient man lived long ago, followed the word of life and followed his ancestors. An ancient man is a man who lived to be 50 or 70 years old. That s the time when the kinship system spread out. They always lived a good life. They ate all the fish and game and did not waste any. Bush berries were eaten all the time. 6. When the southern clouds stand up in the sky some people went to other places while others stayed and danced. Dances and ceremonies were hired out. They still had majabala, the traditional exchange and they gave things to each other only if they had a relationship. When they wanted trouble, like jealous business, they fought each other. They had children and they played about on the beach and, at that time they did not wear shirts or trousers, but always played naked. The old people sat apart and the young unmarried men sat apart, but they lived in one place. They got used to that place, they explored the whole area. 8. They stayed there and, when they felt like it, they visited other people and then they would return home. Material, spears and whatever else, little or big, they still gave to each other, as a sign of 20

23 friendship. They told people about places, creeks and so on. They used paperbark as a cup to drink and to get water. They used to make fire with fire sticks. They watched the sky to tell them the time, for instance, when the old moon dies and the new moon comes up. They conserved water until it was all finished, completely dried up, then would shift to another place where they could find plenty of water. Old men and women were with them when they shifted, they still went, dogs and all. 10. Some stayed and lived on the coast, some far out in the bush. Inland people used to eat kangaroo, meat, etc. and the coastal people used to eat fish. Sugar bag, sand palm fruits, roots and many other bush foods they ate. Children played and stayed healthy. When night fell, they sat around, and danced and so on all through the night. That was how it was before the white man came. As for languages, over 200 or 300 were spoken in the vicinity of Arnhem Land. All different languages. When they felt like a fight they grouped up and came together. They picked on one woman only. They threw a piece of clay. When she saw it she packed all her gear leaving no message and went forever and never came back to them. 12. Some were wounded and some were dead, and the children cried. People from Maningrida, Milingimbi, Gartchi and some other places came. They had an initiation ceremony and the man in charge of the boy was his uncle. He grabs him and takes him to the ceremony places. His father and his relatives all go, no one stays in the camp. First of all they sing and dance. There are sacred objects and painting nearly all over his body. That is the time he has to know bits and pieces of his own traditional song. They sing along until all the songs (mythical songs) are finished, then they initiated him. Finally after some time he recovered enough to start to walk around. But first of all they tell him the rules and laws of his culture. 14. After all this they start giving things, clothes and material, to each other as a sign they ve finished the ceremony. His father, guardian, uncle and relatives got their share. Still his father always taught him the rules of manhood plus his mother. But during his initiation ceremony his mother and sister took him 21

24 food. And they had to stand far away if they wanted to see him. He never talked to his brother-inlaw again after that. He must keep quiet in front of him, he couldn t talk, or answer back. He could not talk to his uncle; he would have to wait until he passed through the ceremony, then he could talk to him. 16. After four days, his grandmother would burn his hands as a sign not to steal things or to walk in the wrong direction. Young girls such as cousins and sisters, mother and sister-in-law must be painted with ochre. When it s finished they all start back home. Time goes by until he sees the southern clouds three times, then he will be allowed to go to the men s business. When he has finished the ceremony, his father still tells him more and teaches him the rules of manhood. After his initiation, he won t mix with the children and young girls. Later, when he has undergone three or four more rites, then he s free. He can mix with them. When they want him to get married, he does if he wants to, otherwise he stays single. When they are babies, partners are arranged. When he is ready, he chooses his own, but she must be the right kinship relation that s all. When he was still a child, his father always told him about it. Sometimes the message was hidden and only an old man with grey hair would speak this out loud. 18. We have still got our sacred sites and culture. We won t give them to any strangers. Barnambirr s (the Morning Star s) light shines on us. We still have our language and the tribal system, and we won t share with him our sacred laws. They are ours and we ll preserve them always so that when our children grow up, they ll learn from us what happened in our culture long ago. It will come from us. That s the end, everyone! 22
