God Made the World Who? God What? God made daytime and nighttime, water and dry land, plants and trees and the sun, moon and stars (Genesis 1:1-19) When & Where? In the beginning Why? To help children sense God s greatness when they see the wonderful world He made Goals for each child Tell that God made the world Name a favorite item God made Thank God for making the world Bible Verse God made the world and everything in it. (See Acts 17:24.) Teacher Challenge Read Genesis 1:1-19. How does believing in God as the creator of the universe make a difference in your life? How can this belief make a difference in the lives of the children you teach? Notice how the little ones in your class are absorbed in and intent on the things they are doing. They learn and live with everything they ve got! Children are a great example of Ecclesiastes 9:10: Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might. This amazing, wonderful ability to learn and live to our fullest potential was created in us by God and is a reminder that we are created in His image! When have you been awed by God s creative wonder? What abilities has He given you that you can thank Him for? As you tell the story of creation, imagine yourself hearing it for the very first time. Children may not remember the details of the story, but they will thrill at the many stars, plants and animals that God spoke into being! Encourage them to turn their pleasure in what God created into thankfulness for all He has done. 1

Play to Learn Bible Story Activities Tear out this Bible Tuck-In and place it in your Bible for class use. Art Center Bible, large sheet of butcher paper, marker, curling ribbon, scissors, ruler, tape, glue sticks. Prepare Draw a large tree outline on butcher paper. Cut curling ribbon into 6- inch (15-cm) lengths to represent leaves. Tape butcher paper to an open wall. Tip for Younger Children Provide crayons for children to scribble on tree. Children use glue sticks to attach ribbon leaves to tree. God made trees. During fall, some leaves change colors. What colors do you see on our tree? Teaching Tip Instead of using glue sticks, place double-sided tape on tree and invite children to add ribbons. Talk About The Bible story today is about the time when God made the world. Who made mountains? Game Center Bible; light-blue, white, dark-blue, yellow, brown, and green sheets of construction paper; scissors; beanbag. Prepare Cut construction paper into shapes representing items God created: light-blue square for sky, white cloud shape, darkblue waves, brown mountain, fringed green grass, yellow sun and star, and white moon. Place shapes on the floor in an open area of the classroom. Refer to open Bible. The Bible says, God made the world and everything in it. What color did God make grass? The sky? I m glad God made the world. God made trees. What color are leaves on a tree? What are some other things God made that are red and yellow? Pray, Thank You, God, for making the world. In Jesus name, amen. Children take turns tossing a beanbag onto the construction-paper shapes. Thank God for whatever is represented by shape that beanbag lands on or near. Thank You, God, for making mountains. Teaching Tip Draw simple shapes on the construction paper instead of cutting them out. Tip for Younger Children Provide several beanbags. Allow more than one child at a time to toss a beanbag onto the shapes. 3
Play to Learn Bible Verse Activities Music Center Bible, Preschool Music #2 CD and player, yellow construction paper, scissors, blue crepe paper, ruler, paper plates, cotton balls, glue sticks, tape. Prepare Cut yellow construction paper into a sun shape, making one for each child. Cut crepe paper into 12-inch (30.5-cm) streamers. Give each child a paper plate. Children glue yellow sun and cotton balls onto their plates to represent the sun and clouds. Assist children in taping a few streamers to their plates. Play God Made the World (track 2 on CD) and invite children to wave sky plate with streamers. 4 Teaching Tip To save time, attach streamers to plates prior to class. Tip for Younger Children Give each child a streamer to wave as you play the music. Nature Center Bible, two each of several nature items (small rocks, pinecones, leaves, bark, twigs, nuts, shells, flowers, apples, etc.), paper grocery bag. Place one of each item in the bag and the other on table or floor. Children name displayed items and then take turns reaching into the bag, removing an item and matching it to the one already identified. Talk About Open your Bible to Acts 17:24. The Bible says, God made the world and everything in it. I m glad that God made such a great world for us to live in. God loves us! God made pretty yellow flowers. What are some other things that are yellow? God made all the colors. What s your favorite thing that God made? Alex, what growing things did you see on your way to church today? God made all kinds of growing things. Let s thank God for His love and the wonderful world He made. Lead children in prayer. Teaching Tip Provide at least one magnifying glass and let children examine items as you guide them. Look at the tiny yellow spots in the center of this flower! Did you know that God made these tiny yellow spots? Tip for Younger Children Allow children to look into bag before reaching in to remove an item.
Listen to Learn Large-Group Time Tear out this Bible Tuck-In and place it in your Bible for class use. Bible, Activity Poster 1 and Figures 1-6 from Visual Resources, Preschool Music #2 DVD or CD and player, Skitter puppet, bag containing an acorn and a roll of tape, real or artificial plant, flannel board; optional God s Story for Me Bible storybook. Come Together Begin this activity as first children come to the area. Call out both an animal and the way it moves as you demonstrate the motions for children to imitate. Hop while calling, Hop like bunnies. Put your hands together and move them side to side in front of you while calling, Swim like fish. Crouch down on the floor as if you re going to jump while calling, Jump like frogs. Repeat with other animals (dogs, cats, cows, horses, etc.). Bible Verse Show Activity Poster 1. What do you see in this picture? Invite volunteers to point to different items in the picture. Name the items children point to. Jason pointed to a deer. God made deer and many other animals, too! Open your Bible to Acts 17:24. The Bible says, God made the world and everything in it. Repeat Bible verse several times. God made many wonderful things! Enrichment Idea Lead children in playing I Spy to find items pictured in Activity Poster 1. I spy something big. It is brown. It has lots of fur. Continue giving clues until a child is able to name or point to item you describe. Repeat with other items as time and interest allow. Prayer Pray, Dear God, thank You for the wonderful world You made. In Jesus name, amen. Song Let s sing about some of the good things God made. Play God Made the World (on DVD or track 2 on CD) several times, inviting children to sing along with you. Puppet Time Use Skitter puppet and bag containing an acorn and a roll of tape to perform the puppet script on the last page of this lesson. Bible Story Use real or artificial plant and Figures 1-6 to help tell the Bible story on the next page. 5
Listen to Learn God Made the World Genesis 1:1-19 Introduction Show real or artificial plant and invite volunteers to describe it. What color is this plant? Volunteers answer. Listen to find out about the time when God made the first trees and other plants. (Hold your Bible open to Genesis 1 as you tell the following story.) The Beginning In the beginning, there were no tall trees, no flowers and no warm sunshine. There were no animals and no people! There was just darkness. But God was there. And this is what God did. Daytime and Nighttime First, God said, Let there be light. And just like that there was light! God called the light day. God made the daytime for working and playing. God made our world dark part of the time. God called the quiet dark night. Nighttime is the perfect time for sleeping. Next, God made the sky. He put this beautiful sky up, up, up high. He made it bright and blue. God made lots of fluffy, puffy white clouds to float in the beautiful blue sky. Grass, Trees and Flowers God said, Let grass and trees and flowers grow. And they did! Soft green grass, tall trees, tiny plants, fruit trees and berry bushes, vegetables and flowers all began to grow. But that s not all God made! Sun, Moon and Stars God made special lights the bright warm sun to shine in the daytime and the moon and the stars to shine at night. Conclusion God made everything in our wonderful world. God is SO great! We can thank God for making the world. The Bible says, God made the world and everything in it. (Optional: Review story by using pages in God s Story for Me Bible storybook.) Water and Dry Land Next, God took all the water and put some here and some there until the world had oceans, lakes and rivers full of water. And between the water was dry land. God made tall, tall mountains, little round hills and low flat places, too. 6 Creative Bible Storytelling Idea While telling the story, draw on a large sheet of paper different things that God created (clouds, land, water, tree, sun, moon, stars, etc.).
Gospel Light. It is illegal to photocopy or reproduce this material in any form. Talk to Learn Tear out this Bible Tuck-In and place it in your Bible for class use. TalkTime Activity Page Bible, Lesson 1 TalkTime activity page and sticker page for yourself and each child, markers or crayons. Hand out TalkTime activity pages and demonstrate how to complete the page. Distribute sticker pages and crayons or markers. As children complete their own page, talk about the items on the page. See Acts 17:24. Draw lines to match each item with its shadow. Name Genesis 1:1-19 God made the world and everything in it. I finished! Family FunTime Page Show page 1 of Family FunTime, review the conversation suggestions, and give the papers to children to take home. Let s talk! What is something big God made? Something little? We can thank God for all the things He made. Add the stickers to complete the picture. Color the picture. Distribute pages. Demonstrate how to complete the page. Then give children stickers and crayons or markers. As children complete pages, use the Let s talk! ideas. Ages 2 & 3 Let s talk! What did God make that you see at night? What else did God make? Talk About At night, what do you see in the sky? God made the moon and the stars. God made the daytime and the nighttime. What is something you like to do at night? During the day? What did God make that is green? I m glad God made trees and grass! Refer to open Bible. The Bible says, God made the world and everything in it. Jessie, point to something God made. Let s thank God for making the world and everything in it. Lead children in a brief prayer of thanks. Bible Story Game Several flashlights, magazine pictures of plants and nature scenes. Display pictures in different places around the room. In our Bible story today, we learned that God made everything in the world! God made daytime and nighttime, too. Let s pretend it is nighttime. Let s use flashlights to find things God made. Turn on flashlights and give them to several children. Slightly darken room. Lead children in finding one or more pictures and illuminating them with flashlights. Repeat, giving flashlights to different children. Music Fun During transition times, invite children to sing along as they listen to God Made the World (track 2), Welcome, Hello! (track 1) and/or Good-Bye for Now (track 15) on Preschool Music #2 CD. 7
Puppet Script Making Stuff (Note: Play both parts, changing your voice for the puppet. Or you may have a helper play one of the parts.) (Enters with a bag in his mouth containing an acorn and a roll of tape.) Hi, hi, hi, Teacher! (Speaks to children.) Look, boys and girls, it is Skitter the Squirrel! (Speaks to SKITTER.) Hello, Skitter! What are you up to today? I m going to make something! That sounds like fun! It looks like you have something in your bag. (Speaks excitedly.) Yes, yes, yes! It has things to use to make other things. (Empties bag into LEADER s lap.) Here is my acorn and my tape. Wow! What are you going to make with an acorn and some tape? I don t know. I just like to make things. Tape is really fun! Can you pull off a piece for me? Sure! (Asks a volunteer to pull off a piece of tape.) What do you want to do with the tape? Oh, oh, oh! Stick it on the acorn! Okay. (Asks volunteer to attach tape to the acorn.) Then tape it to me! Okay. (Tapes acorn to SKITTER.) Look! It s a... (Whispers.) I don t know what it is. Can you ask the boys and girls what they think it is? Sure. (Speaks to children.) What can we call this fun thing that Skitter made? An acorn purse? (Pauses for children to respond.) An acorn hair tie? (Pauses for children to respond.) An acorn sticker? (Pauses for children to respond.) Yes, yes, yes! I really like my acorn sticker! It s a lot of fun to make new things, isn t it? You used an acorn that God created to make an acorn sticker. God created lots of amazing things. The Bible says God made the world and everything in it! Wow! God made the acorns? Yes. He made everything that grows! Oh, oh, oh! I m going to go and find other things in my yard that God created! Then I can tape them all together! I ll make a collection! I ll make a picture! I ll make Oh, dear. You might need more tape. Have fun! 8
