1 November 2013 Interfaith Center of New York E-Announcements Dear Friends, The Muslim-Catholic partnership in Harlem sponsored its first ever Interfaith Recovery Event: Movin With the Spirit, for which approximately 45 people of various faith backgrounds and neighborhoods gathered at The Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood in Harlem on September 25, 2013 to discuss overcoming addiction. Religious leaders from both Muslim and Catholic communities spoke, including Deacon Ken Radcliffe, Father Victor Emumwen, and Imam Al-Hajj Talib 'Abdur- Rashid. A separate interfaith panel on October 29th in Brooklyn featured Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, and Jewish perspectives on Hope. It took place at the Kane St. Synagogue on October 29. In addition, ICNY staff members joined other faith leaders at an October 28th action organized by the New York Immigration Coalition to support immigration reform. To read the New York Daily News article about it, click on Looking ahead this month, on November 20th, the Interfaith Center s Director of Education Programs, Henry Goldschmidt, will work with teachers from the Grace Church School in lower Manhattan to bring a group of 60 students to visit the Ganesh Temple, in Flushing, Queens. As always, we are delighted to help young New Yorkers explore the religious diversity of their city. Below we list programs offered by The Interfaith Center of New York in November. We also list additional upcoming events that may be of interest to religious leaders in New York. A listing does not imply endorsement. ***** Upcoming Interfaith Center of New York Events***** 29th Rabbi Marshall T. Meyer Retreat For Social Justice: Child Welfare and Foster Care Date: Wednesday, Dec. 4 (registration begins Oct. 1) Time: 8:30 am - 5:00 pm

Come join us for a one-day conference to learn from ACS experts, non-profit agencies and religious leaders. Space is limited so please reserve ASAP: Fax this form to Sarah Sayeed at (212) , or to ssayeed@interfaithcenter.org, or mail to 475 Riverside Drive, Suite 540 New York, NY For questions, please call (212) Storytelling Workshop Date: Wednesday, Nov. 13 Time: 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Location: Infinity Mennonite Church (use back entrance), 2522 Adam Clayton Powell Blvd. (Corner of 146th Street) The Interfaith Center of New York will be sponsoring a Storytelling Workshop. This workshop will be a training session for Interfaith Center volunteers, allies, and clergy on a unique storytelling methodology. Everyone will have an opportunity to practice this storytelling method together, enabling us to reflect on the value of telling and witnessing stories as they relate to our different faiths, as well as brainstorming on which communities we would like to bring this practice to. We hope that you will join us for an enriching and inspiring time together. Light refreshments will be provided. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP Theo Harris, Outreach Coordinator, at The Interfaith Center of New York (212) or theo@interfaithcenter.org. 3rd Annual Debate in the Neighborhood Program

With support from the Open Society Foundations and International Debate Education Association, ICNY is pleased to offer the third annual Debate in the Neighborhood program, starting in January Students in the program will receive training in public speaking, critical thinking, and other debate skills, to help them find their voices as future leaders of their communities. They will participate in interfaith conversations, to foster mutual understanding across faith lines. And they will work with their peers in other faith communities to explore the limits, if any, of our right to free speech in a diverse society. If you would like to offer Debate in the Neighborhood to young people in your community, contact ICNY s Director of Education Programs, Henry Goldschmidt, at hgoldschmidt@interfaithcenter.org, or *********** ICNY Co-Sponsored Events************* Buddhist Global Relief NYC Walk to Feed the Hungry Date: Saturday, Nov. 2 Time: 9:15 am check in 10:00 am walk Location: Riverside Park, North Lawn (enter at W. 79th or W. 80th St. and Riverside Dr.) The NYC Walk to Feed the Hungry will begin at the North Lawn.
