Editorial Oldies but Goodies by Joni Owens If you have been teaching for a substantial length of time, some of the stories you see each quarter may sound familiar because they are! There are only so many ways to tell the story of Creation or the Flood on the Kindergarten level. The same is true for activities, crafts, and songs. We have accumulated quite a collection of material from our apostolic writers, and these tested and tried ideas are good for multiple generations. Of course, we continue to collect fresh material to blend into our classic Bible lessons. So often we take for granted the things God created. When we take the time to study His Word the words He used to speak things into existence, the methods He used to create humans, and the reason for it all we cannot help but stand in awe. As much as we enjoy and admire the scenery, taking picture after picture, these things were not created for our enjoyment. Revelation 4:11 clearly states, for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. When God chose leaders to lead His people, once again it was for His pleasure. He chose those who would do His good will, people like Moses and Samuel and the child king Josiah. When He heard Joshua s command-prayer to stop the sun, it was for His glory, not Joshua s. The Hebrew captives understood life was not about them; they knew God was able to deliver them, whether He chose to or not. Life is not about us. It is all about God. As you teach your young students this quarter, help them understand God made them, God may one day choose them as leaders, and God can rescue them from bad situations... all for His pleasure. CUSTOMIZE THE CURRICULUM The Kindergarten Teacher s Manual is now available as PDF and DOC documents that can be customized to fit your teaching style, classroom setting, and schedule. 3 Theme Development God s Colors Polka dots are always such fun, so we decided to reuse our polka dots from a previous quarter. Since recycling is always a plus not to mention easier and less expensive pull out your polka dots and consider ways to give them a different twist for a fun new look. If this is a new décor theme for you, take a few minutes to do an online search for polka dot décor. Try Pinterest, Google, teacher supply stores, teacher websites... and prepare to be overwhelmed with dots! Dots are everywhere. They are colorful, of different sizes, and when combined can make the most interesting things. Teacher supply stores offer myriads of dot décor items: bulletin board packets, border trims, notepads, nameplates, posters, backgrounds, and so on. Party supply stores will carry similar items. If practical, purchase some of these readymade items for an easy start to your walls. And don t forget paper plates! They are the easiest color dots available and come in a variety of sizes. Visit our Facebook page for ideas on how dots have been used in the past. Search for Word Aflame Kindergarten Curriculum Teachers. Borders Add polka dot borders to any bulletin or writing/chalkboards. Borders can go around windows, doors (entry and closet), and cabinets. If you cannot purchase borders, cut dots of various sizes from construction paper and make your own borders. Consider using polka dot gift wrap as backgrounds or borders. An occasional contrast of stripes will add some needed zing. Dots Dots are the easiest décor piece to make because they are nothing more than circles! Use lids (think kitchen) of various sizes to trace your shapes and then cut away. Construction paper is inexpensive and most likely on hand. Glossy gift wrap is another choice, although it tends to be flimsy and will require extra support for mounting. Consider using spray adhesive to attach a large section to thin cardboard, and then cut out your dots. Very large dots should be cut from sturdier stock such as posterboard. Posterboard comes in a variety of colors, including neon. Use any and all colors, even black and brown. These are all God s colors. 3
Teaching Wall The teaching wall has the writing board where you tell the Bible story. Add polka dot borders to the writing board. Cut out the memory verse dots and mount them at the children s eye level for easy access. Mount the special memory passage (Revelation 4:11) on this wall. Do not add dots to this wall or they will fight with your story props for the children s attention. Remember to keep all important items at the children s eye level. Anything higher than the writing board should simply be for show, not for attention or teaching. Mount the Kids in Missions map of Africa on this wall as well. It will remind you to pray for your missionaries. Note: Markers will cause the papers to curl, so use crayons. Printing on the heaviest card stock your printer allows will also help prevent curling. Attendance Wall Make one wall an attendance wall. Cut out 20-inch large dots from posterboard, one for each child. Draw a smiley face on each dot. Add polka dot ribbon bows to the girl dots and bow ties to the boy dots. Label each dot and put them at children s level so the students can find them. Each week, provide white cardstock dots (5'' circles), one per child. Let the children color them (be sure to use placemats underneath to catch coloring off the edges) and add their names before mounting them to the wall. They may add facial features if they choose. Or, rather than taking time to color the dots each week, consider printing the dots on colored paper (use a different color each week) and let students add their names and facial features. The children will enjoy seeing their dot collection grow each week. The last week, let them take their dots home. Creation Wall Make a collection of dot-shaped items God created: a yellow sun, white moon, round earth, yellow sunflower, and green caterpillar. Create an array of flowers by making various-size round centers and adding round petals. Create caterpillars (of different colors) by assembling several circles, drawing a face, and adding chenille wire antennae that have round circles on the ends. Everything should be larger than life. Large-size construction paper and posterboard will be best for this wall. 4
Other round items of nature include: oranges, cherries, grapes (make a cluster of purple dots), egg yolk (add the white), kiwi, sand dollar, and puffer fish. The base for each of these will be round dots, with minimal identifying marks or pieces added. The key is to maintain the dot effect. Consider combining dots to make other creation items: brown dots to make a tree trunk with green dot leaves; dot butterflies; and dot animals. See the theme art for ideas. Polka Dot Wall This will be a wide array of polka dots of different sizes. Mount the attendance/ memory charts at children s eye level before adding dots above and around the papers. Just above them, scatter thirteen large polka dots (at least twelve inches in diameter). Each week after you show the Bible art picture (usually during life application), let a child mount it on one of the dots. This will help build a review wall. Other dots on the wall could be left plain or could reflect Bible stories, people in the church (such as pastor), or prayer requests. Bulletin Boards Decorating entire rooms makes a large impact. However, if you are limited to decorating bulletin boards, use any of the above ideas on a smaller scale. If you have a bulletin board outside your classroom, display pictures of your students mounted to construction paper dots, with a title that reads, God Created Everything! Door Dots Cut out and mount the welcome dot (trp) on the door at the children s eye level. Above and below the sign, add smiley face dots (6 to 8 inches) with a nametag for each child. They will enjoy seeing their names on the door. Salvation Dots Door On the inside door (assuming you close your door during class time), mount the salvation dots. Throughout the quarter, discuss the plan of salvation with the students. Children as young as four years old have received the Holy Ghost. This is also the age to introduce salvation terms, such as sin, repent, forgive, baptize, and Holy Ghost. These simple pictures will help explain the three basic elements of salvation. Bible Points Every week the children learn a short take-home phrase summarizing the lesson objectives. Print a copy of Dottie the Dot (trp), using a different color paper each week. Attach her to a paper plate for stability and secure it to a paint stirrer. Dottie 5
introduces the Bible point during the welcome segment. Each time you hold up Dottie during the session, the children say the Bible point. This is not always written into the lesson, so remember to do it often. Volunteers From neon posterboard, cut several 4-inch dots. Label each with a child s name. Place these in a small round gift box (or a gift bag). Whenever you need a volunteer to read, act, or help in some way, draw a dot from the box/bag. This helps to ensure each child gets used at least once during the session. If a child is shy about being in front of others, save his dot for behind-the-scenes help, such as distributing supplies or helping to clean up. Return the dots to the box/bag when all have been used or at the end of the day. Attendance and Memory Charts The charts are combined on a portrait layout on the activity paper wrapper. Remove the staple and separate the papers for weekly distribution. On the first Sunday, give each child a charts page and let him write his name on the line. Each week the child attends, he follows the color key to color one area on the picture. Purchase ½-inch stickers to place on the memory charts. Each week the children practice the unit memory verse, they add stickers to the appropriate verse space as noted by the dots. Use the master of each chart to make copies for visitors. Bible Verses A unit Bible verse is studied each unit. The multi-week study will explain the verse as well as encourage memorization. An additional Bible story verse that connects to the Bible story is mentioned in the story and is included in the activity paper. Each verse is printed on its own dot. Cut out these dots and place on the teaching wall at the children s eye level. If you cannot decorate all your walls as suggested, cut out the shapes and mount them on posterboard or cardboard for stability, then show them each week during memory work. The special memory passage is Revelation 4:11. A poster is included in the resource packet, and a small version is on the activity paper. Several of the optional activities include opportunities for teaching this important passage. Kids in Missions The focus this quarter is Africa. Ideas and information are included on the downloadable KiM insert. The large resource poster shows a map and a list of 6
missionaries in Africa. Consider spending time the first Sunday of the month praying for the missionaries and doing the suggested activities. Profile sheets of the missionary kids serving in Africa are available at profilesheets.html. Print these and distribute for the students to color and take home as a reminder to pray for them. Teacher Training Helps Our website offers several teacher training articles as well as other items to enhance your teaching experience: a child information form, characteristics of children, how to build a tree, and how to make sock puppets. A standard supply list details items that should be regularly available. pentecostalpublishing.com/pages/teachers-training A teacher training article is included in the resource packet. This piece is 3-hole punched for placement in your personal or classroom resource notebook. Music Worship is an important part of each lesson. Several children s CDs are available at including Word Aflame s Kids in Praise volumes 1 and 2. Many worship CDs include today s choruses that are popular in church and are usually sung by children. Let students help lead worship time by using inflatable mics and musical instruments. Facebook Join us on Facebook and share exciting news, ask questions, offer suggestions, and most importantly, post those room décor pics! Your pictures inspire others as well as offer options for turning rooms into WOW! rooms. Search for Word Aflame Kindergarten Curriculum Teachers. Note: Before posting pictures of children, be sure to get parental permission. The child information form on our teacher training link offers a place for their approval. 7

Bible Background We all know the commanding phrase, Let there be light. Yet this is not the only part of Creation with such a command. Three times God said, Let there be followed by commands for creation. Twice God said, Let the waters, and twice He said, Let the earth. Fourteen times over the course of Creation God used the word let. The word simply means to allow or to permit something to happen. Look at the amazing things that happened when God spoke the word let over our world. What would happen if He would speak the same word over our students, our classrooms, and us? Teacher Insight In the fall, you will likely face excessive amounts of energy, irritability, friendliness, shyness, worry or anxiety, and a mix of positive and negative behaviors. Some of your students will have recently started school, possibly for the first time. You may find them suddenly shy or unwilling to leave Mom or Dad. Some will have already picked up some unwanted behaviors from school, or be tired, restless, or talkative. Regardless of the new emotional or behavioral changes your students may exhibit, it is important they find consistency in your classroom and in you. You and your room may be the only stable things they have encountered over the past few weeks. Welcome to the Word Give each child a color dot to wear. Let students explore the room. Give each student a dot to complete and mount on the attendance wall. Introduce Dottie the Dot. Explain that every time you hold up Dottie, the children are to say the Bible point, God made the heavens and the earth. Let students write their names on their attendance charts and color the first item. Activity Distribute marked paper plates. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. The Bible tells us before God created, or made, the heaven and the earth, everything was empty and dark and had no shape. Instruct the students to color the first section black. Then God made light, so leave the next section white. Have students color the third section blue and the last section green. Each student writes his name on the back and sets the plate aside until story time. Worship Who made the world? Show Dottie as a clue. Discuss that God is the Creator of everything. Creator means maker or inventor. Sing He s Got the Whole World. Between verses let students name things God made. Welcome supplies: Attendance charts Yellow crayons or markers Dottie the Dot ¾-inch colored dots Cardstock dots Although it is not always written into the text, show Dottie and repeat the Bible point frequently: God made the heavens and the earth. This is the key take-away thought of the lesson. Activity supplies: Paper plates Blue, black, green, sky blue crayons To help guard against restlessness, students move frequently between activity table and worship area. 9
