Editorial by Joni Owens My Sweet Tooth While working on the theme ideas for our Sweet Life décor, my mind wandered back to my childhood when candy treats were a priority. The corner store had a fantastic glass display case full of penny candy (yes, they really were a penny each). The choices were many, but of course I had my favorites: button candy strips, Tootsie Rolls, Sugar Babies, Junior Mints, and Bazooka gum. Then there were the wax lips and the wax soda bottles with the sugary-sweet liquid inside. Smarties, Tootsie Roll Pops, Chiclets, M&M s, Pez,...the list goes on! Many years, cavities, and pounds later I have learned to limit my intake of sweets. Although my sweet list now prioritizes baked goods over candy, with the occasional ice cream thrown in, I have definitely slowed down the consumption of such goodies. I had to learn that not all things that taste good giving that instant gratification are good for me. Now I pick and choose what I eat, because my overall health demands it. The sweet tooth does not control me. Let s bring this to a spiritual reflection. The world offers long lists of things that taste good, and not all of them are bad for us. We need to eat, work, play, get educated, socialize, relax, achieve, and have down time. However, over time those very things affect our spiritual health as we continually go after them for instant gratification. After years of satisfying the fleshly desires and keep in mind that all things in the world are not bad I had to learn to adapt my spiritual sweet list. As I investigated God s actions, I was reminded again and again just how awesome our God is. I bravely determined to live for God as I gave Him glory in the face of those who took credit for their own levels of worth. When I realized the preachers God put in my life were helping me understand His guidelines, I was able to mature and follow His plans for my life. The world s instant gratifications are still there; I still eat, work, play, socialize, relax, and achieve. The difference is, I m enjoying my sweet life with Jesus far more than anything I enjoy while satisfying my sweet tooth. All of this is a bit deep for your beginners, which is why we have broken it down into tasty, bite-size portions your students can enjoy. 3 Theme Development The Sweet Life The sweet life literally refers to sweets and candies, and figuratively to a life lived for Jesus Christ. The sweet life is available to all, and though it can get hard and sticky at times, the sweet life is worth it all the time. We have a sweet tooth that says give me more! Our spirit also has a sweet tooth give me more of Jesus! This quarter the lessons focus on Acts and Romans, sharing how the early church s growing believers learned how to live for God and grow in Him. It s a sweet life we re living for the Lord! This fun theme will focus on a sweet shop where children can drool over tempting selections, and earn the right to enjoy some of those tasty treats. In addition to the ideas we present, visit sites such as Pinterest and teacher supply stores for ready-made décor pieces and ideas. Everything will be bright and colorful. All five children s levels feature this theme, so brainstorm with the rest of the staff to coordinate best usage of theme art and still make each room unique. When your room is complete, take pictures and share on our Facebook page. Explaining Our Acronyms and Symbols (trp) = Teacher s Resource Packet = Downloadable resource using code on TRP instruction sheet (ap) = Activity Paper NOTE: Reproducible theme art (trp) is available for you to copy onto transparency film, using the film designed for your copier. It is also available as a digital file for those who have access to computer projectors. Both are great options for enlarging art onto the wall, portable sheets or boards, or posterboard. BP = Bible Point MV = Memory Verse KiM = Kids in Missions SMP = Special Memory Passage Check your supply lists at the beginning of the quarter so you can start collecting other items that might be more difficult to obtain on short notice. Home Connection Don t Miss These Features! On the bottom of each activity paper is a URL address for parents to take advantage of our Home Connection. Review questions, activities, and memory work are provided for at-home discussion. Be sure to show this to parents when they pick up their children. Or, each week make copies of the Home Connection (trp) for each student to take home. God Sends Ravens to Elijah Q: Where did God tell Elijah to hide? A: By the stream Q: How did Elijah get his water? A: From the stream Q: What brought Elijah his food? A: Ravens Talk Time Toddler Home Connection Ages 2 3 Today I heard about the ravens who fed Elijah. You can read this miracle story in I Kings 17:2 6. As you review the activities and memory work, talk with your child about how God keeps us safe. Here are some lesson-related books to read: Six Crows by Leo Lionni Elijah Helps a Widow Arch Book by Nanette Thorenson-Snipes Lulu s Crow Garden by Lizi Boyd Bible Passage: Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe (Psalm 119:117). Bible Words: I Kings 17:2 6 Scripture Text: John 9:1 12 Kindergarten & Beginner Home Connection Pre-K Grade 2 Read Joshua 2 to learn what happened when Rahab chose to follow the one true God. Q: Why did Joshua send spies into Jericho? A: To study the city before they conquered it. Q: Why did Rahab want to follow the one true God? A: She heard about Him and believed. Truth about God God desires every individual to follow Him. Bible Lesson Verse And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father s household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho (Joshua 6:25). I follow the one true God. Together Time Hide a bag of treats. Write two sets of instructions, one that leads to the treats and one that does not. Select two leaders. Family members decide which leader to follow. Discuss how it felt upon realizing they followed the wrong leader. Follow the one true God! Learn these passages with your child. Unit 1 Bible Verse: Romans 8:37 Special Memory Passage: Hebrews 11:6 Word Time Primary & Preteen Home Connection Grades 3 6 God Saves Us Rahab was given specific instructions to hang a scarlet ribbon in her window. Pin a red ribbon on a family member each evening this week, and pay extra attention to their instructions. If you are the one wearing the ribbon, test how well the others are watching, listening, and following by giving some silly instructions to follow. Keep the ribbons as a reminder that following God s instructions will save us. Lesson Pentecostal Publishing House, CUT HERE Attendance and Memory Charts If you choose not to use the suggested attendance and memory ideas on the teaching wall, use the charts from the activity paper sets. On the first Sunday, give each student an attendance chart and let students write their names on the line. Each week students attend, they glue a wrapped candy to their charts. This will go home at the end of the quarter, when they will be able to enjoy their treats. On the first Sunday, give each student a memory chart and let students write their names on the line. Each week as students study the memory work in class, they color a candy heart on their charts. Mount these on the teaching wall for easy access each week. All rights reserved. SUMMER

Walls Three walls will be devoted to the candy theme, while the teaching wall will focus on the extra pieces used throughout the quarter. Use the reproducible theme art (trp) to create some delicious sweets. If you have a 3-D tree in your room, secure snowflakes and real candy packages to the branches for a fun look. Throughout the quarter, allow students to select treats from this tree. They could earn them, or receive them on a surprise Sunday for no other reason than that they attended class that day. If you do not have a tree, determine another way to store sweet treats for distribution. Be sure to keep most items at children s eye level so they don t have to constantly look up to enjoy their room décor. An empty upper-third wall will not bother a child; children focus on things at their level. Nothing should be higher than the teacher s head, and those items should be minimal, such as letters or banners that title a wall. Do not worry about covering the entire wall with items. A simple wall with items children can immediately see at their level is more impressive than a wall with out-of-reach and out-of-sight items. Teaching Wall This wall has the writing board, Kids in Missions map, and weekly teaching props. Use the theme art (trp) idea to create a large colorful awning to place over this wall, using colorful strips of construction paper, posterboard, or fabric. (It doesn t need to start at the ceiling, but could begin just above your writing board.) Add a sign that reads The Sweet Shop. Attendance: To track student attendance in a fun interactive way, purchase clear cellophane treat bags (like those used at birthday parties), one for each child. Let children write their names on colorful recipe cards and then secure the bags to the cards, making sure the top of each bag is left open. Each week students attend, they add a wrapped candy treat to their bags. At the end of the quarter, children take their treats home. Mount the carded bags to the wall where students can reach them. Memory: For interactive memory tracking, students write their names on paper plates, one per student, and mount them to the wall. Each week students study the memory work in class, they add a cupcake paper liner to their plates. The goal is to fill the plates with cupcakes. At the end of each unit, consider serving mini cupcakes for each cupcake liner earned that unit. Sweet Stuff Unit 1 investigates God s actions, such as His plan of salvation, miracles, power, and incarnation. Mount the unit 1 memory poster (trp) on this wall. God s actions are full of sweet stuff for us to enjoy. Create several recipe cards from colorful posterboard sheets and add art and text that correlate with the lessons of this unit. Recipes and instructions are important when making sweets. Mount the New Birth poster (trp) that shows a recipe card with the ingredients to being born again on this wall. Refer to this during lesson 1 and elsewhere during the quarter. Create a large recipe card that is titled, MIRACLES. Add a large ice cream cone in one corner for artwork. Print in large letters Ingredients: and below it list Hearing the Word; Faith; Prayer; and Believing. 4

Another recipe card should read, POWER. Print in large letters Instructions: and below it list Listen to the Word of God; Pray; Believe; and Exercise Your Faith. Add a large cookie in the corner for artwork. The final recipe card reflects the Christmas story. Add a candy cane to the corner for art. Title the card, JESUS. Below it write Son of God; Emmanuel; and God with Us. To finish the wall, surround the recipe cards with oversized versions of various sweets: ice cream cones, soft drink bottles, chocolate chip cookies, cupcakes, s mores, and candy canes. Cookie Crumbles Nothing beats the smell of freshly baked cookies! There s just something extra tasty about those fresh-from-the-oven creations that is an experience not to be missed. Unit 2 focuses on living for God and experiencing newness of life. He has fresh, delicious goodness for us every day! Mount the unit 2 memory poster (trp) here and bring students to this wall when studying it. Gather a variety of baking tools and clothing (adult- and kid-sized). Use the.5- and 1-pound weight Command strip hooks to hang items on the wall around the memory poster. Items should include measuring cups, measuring spoons, spatulas, spoons, whisks, icing tubes and tips, oven mitts, aprons, cookie sheets, and so on. Use a hot glue gun to add tied ribbon loops to items that do not have holes for hanging. Around these items add various labels from ingredients necessary for making cookies: flour, sugar, chocolate chips, cocoa, peanut butter, butter, vanilla, baking soda, and so on. If you cannot obtain enough empty items for labels, go online and search for images of the items, and then print and mount them. Candy Counter Which candy is your perfect candy? Which ones are good for your moods? So many choices, and so little time! Children think candy is good (even though parents realize candy isn t so good). Help them learn to pursue the good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Mount the unit 3 memory poster (trp) on this wall and take students to this wall when studying the unit 3 verse. If necessary, cover the wall with a single bright color (use paint, sheets, vinyl tablecloths, or Kraft paper). Keep the background plain so it doesn t fight with the various candies. Option 1: Add shelves to the wall (mounted or stand-ups). Place larger-than-life candy creations on the shelves. Option 2: Add depth to your wall with boxes to hold your candy creations. Select large boxes and remove the lids or top flaps. Cut out the side that will be the top of the box. Cover the box with bright paper (or spray paint it) and then mount it to the wall. Fill each box with these candy creations. Wrap round paper lanterns in large pieces of cellophane from top to bottom. Gather the material at each side and use a twist-tie to secure, forming a wrapped piece of candy. 5

Create large lollipops and hard candy with colorful pool noodles. Consider painting or using duct tape to create stripes around the noodle before assembling. Circle a large pool noodle into itself, securing with a hot glue gun as you go around. Be sure to hold it secure until finished, and then immediately wrap it tightly with a piece of cellophane. For the hard candy, gather the cellophane ends and use a twist tie to secure it. For the lollipop, cut a hole in the bottom and insert a dowel rod before adding the cellophane. Cut a bright green piece of posterboard into a large long rectangle. Add strips of foil to each end to complete your piece of chewing gum. Use colorful duct tape to create a diamond in the center for added color. Create several versions of various colors and stand upright on the shelves so they can be read and identified as gum. Fill a large clear container with colorful balls to represent gumballs or jaw breakers. Wrap large paper plates in tissue paper, gathering the ends and securing with twist ties, for candy discs. Add curly ribbon to cover the twist ties and then mount. Do the same with large cardboard tubes for candies similar to Tootsie Rolls. On colorful index cards, write simple prices for each candy collection, such as 5, 10, and 25. Bulletin Boards If you cannot decorate entire walls, any of the wall décor ideas can be used on bulletin boards. If you decorate entire walls but also have bulletin boards, simply integrate them into the wall s design. If you have a bulletin board or wall space outside your classroom, create a fresh sweet idea each month. December: Create a large birthday cake with Happy Birthday, Jesus on it. January: Scatter giant Life Saver candies (colorful plastic plates that have the center cut out) with the words, Jesus is the Life Saver. February: Cut out several pastel Valentine hearts and add the students names. Additional Ideas The theme art extras include other sweets such as pastries and confections. You may choose to incorporate some of these items into your décor to give additional perspective to the sweet life. Offering Build a faux bubble gum machine using a medium-sized clay pot and tray, and a round votive jar or glass potpourri pot whose base matches the size of the base of the clay pot. Paint and/or decorate the pot and tray. Once dry, hot glue the base of the glass pot to the base of the inverted clay pot. Students drop their offering into the bowl each week. If feasible, keep the offering in the globe for the whole quarter, allowing students to watch it grow from week to week. Students give their offering as soon as they enter the room. 6

Door Poster Mount the door poster (trp) welcoming students to the room. Truth about God While the Bible is filled with narratives that we teach our children, it is God s story. It is all about Him, not the characters. Each lesson focuses on a truth about God, an attribute or principle that helps define or characterize God. While the children do not memorize this statement, the lesson segments will support it. Volunteers Purchase measuring spoons and small spatulas at a dollar store. Write each student s name on an item and place all items in a canister. Keep extra items for visitors beside the canister. When a volunteer is needed, simply draw a utensil from the canister and place it in a second canister to allow everyone an equal chance at being selected. Bible Points Every week the children learn a short take-home phrase summarizing the lesson objectives. Say the Bible point frequently to help children lock this important life application into their hearts and minds. Develop a signal, such as the sound of crackling cellophane (candy wrappers) or holding up a candy thermometer, each time students need to say the point. Bible Verses A unit Bible verse is studied each unit. The multi-week study will explain the verse as well as encourage memorization. Each week, gather students at the appropriate poster to study the verse. An additional Bible lesson verse that connects to the Bible lesson is mentioned and is included in the activity paper. Kids in Missions The focus this quarter is Asia. Ideas and information are included on page 9. Mount the Kids in Missions map (trp), showing Asia and our list of missionaries, on the teaching wall as a reminder to pray for this region. The first Sunday of each month, the lesson provides an optional activity idea for focusing on Asia. Bible Art Pictures Each week the Life Application supply list includes a Bible art picture (trp). Use this at your discretion if you feel your students need a visual of biblical times. For added stability, mount the week s picture in a frame and display for the day. 7

Teacher Training H elps Our website offers several teacher training articles as well as other items to enhance your teaching experience, such as a child information form, childhood characteristics, how to build a tree, and how to make sock puppets. 9 K DS in M ss ons Asia Lynden & Kathy Shalm, Regional Director Key Project Many of the churches in the Asia region are not allowed to freely worship Jesus. They meet in homes and quietly conduct a service and softly sing praises to the Lord. New converts are baptized in the bathtub of the home. Many home churches will have a birthday cake present so if questioned by the police, they can say they are celebrating a birthday. After all, when one is saved we do celebrate them becoming a new creature! Consider having a special day of prayer for the persecuted church. Bring in a birthday cake, practice singing quietly, and have a student preach quietly. Take turns praying for churches that are persecuted in the Asia region. Pray for the missionaries who live undercover spreading the gospel. Pray for protection for families and that a great revival would happen in this area. Pray Pray for the protection of the missionaries, the national workers, and the church. This area has many underground churches where it is illegal to worship Jesus. Pray for more missionaries and AIM workers to come to this region. This region has the largest population group in the world but has the least amount of missionaries. Pray for doors to open to the gospel. Pray that the Lord will set up meetings for our pastors and missionaries to meet influential leaders in the area who will grow the church quickly. Pray for good health and strength for the missionaries. Due to different laws in this region, the air is filled with smog and pollution. Pray that their lungs and bodies would remain strong and free from disease. Pray for language interpreters for the missionaries, and also pray for the missionaries as they learn the language. The languages in this region are very difficult to learn since just the tone of your voice can change the meaning of the word. Pray for revival to flourish in the midst of persecution of the church. Special Focus The United Pentecostal Church has built an orphanage in Nepal. The New Beginnings of Nepal Children s Home was established in They currently house ten children. The home originally was created to be an adoption program between Nepal and the United States. After building the home and working with ten children, the government no longer allowed orphans to be adopted out of their country. New Beginnings continues to care for these ten orphans. They provide assistance for food, shelter, schooling, and medical and dental care. In 2015 a horrible earthquake shook the nation of Nepal. The New Beginnings home was not greatly affected by this national disaster. Your students can save their change this quarter to be collected on the last Sunday as a special financial hug to these children. All monies can be sent to: Mercy Nepal, C/O New Beginnings 2164 Southridge Drive, Tupelo, MS New Beginnings is an adoption agency in partnership with the UPCI. Missionary Facts 14 missionary families or units residing or working in 24 countries/ ministries 24 nations 5,803+ churches and preaching points 442,486+ constituents 4.5 billion+ souls MK Fun Because of safety issues with many of our MKs in Asia, it is difficult for your students to send them a personalized letter. Here is a creative way to pray for them weekly. Go to your local Chinese take-out restaurant and get a traditional to go container and some chopsticks. Have your class create 12 prayer requests that they could pray over the MKs in this region (e.g., that they would be safe, that they would make friends easily, that they would learn the language quickly). Each week let a student pick out a prayer request with chopsticks (this will be a little tricky, yet fun) and have the class pray over this for all of the MKs in the region. Resources Check out these sites for additional facts and figures. the-world-factbook/index.html Visit for prayer tools and resources to help your students become missions minded. Contact Global Missions for ideas for a missions conference, media presentations, or to see if any missionaries from the Asia region are in your state this quarter; perhaps they could speak to your children.
