Explaining Our Acronyms and Symbols (trp) = Teacher s Resource Packet = Downloadable resource using code on TRP instruction sheet (ap) = Activity Paper THEME DEVELOPMENT Investigation Station Investigating facts. Finding clues. Solving mysteries. God s Word provides all the clues for a strong, growing church, but someone must pry out the facts. Meet the Pr-I Team (Private Investigator Team). No mystery is too difficult for these Private I s as they learn the characteristics of God and how to spread the message of salvation. The Investigation Station is where your Beginner Pr-I Team will build an open, honest relationship with Jesus and with each other. The team will identify, collect, preserve, BP = Bible Point MV = Memory Verse KiM = Kids in Missions SMP = Special Memory Passage and analyze Bible clues as they search out facts from the Book of Acts and investigate the Thessalonica church. These saints received God s Word from apostle Paul. He uncovered the truth and helped solve the mystery of the Godhead. Paul s example shows us how to share the message of salvation, follow God s direction, and develop a relationship with Jesus and others. The Pr-I Team needs tools for detecting facts. The top Private I (teacher) leads the investigation from the Pr-I office. Create this in one corner of the room. Set up a desk or table filled with notebooks, top-secret envelopes, code-breakers, magnifying glasses, and fingerprint kits. Use a briefcase to store manila folders marked top secret or classified. If available, place a laptop on the desk and display the weekly Bible Point or unit Bible verses on the screen. Agent badges and clipboards will identify your Pr-I Team on their quest for answers. Consider purchasing play detective kits and designate a place for Private I s to store their props. Cameras, fingerprint kits, large paintbrushes (for dusting fingerprints), magnifying glasses, and detective gear (trench coat, hat, disguise) are all fun items to incorporate the theme. Search the internet for private investigator items and decoration ideas. Children enjoy exciting decorations and engaging activities. Make your Pr-I Team office a fun environment. Clues need identifying and evidence must be analyzed. The perfect place to handle these is the CSI Lab (Christian Salvation Investigation Lab). Use a room divider, appliance box, or curtain to section off one corner of the room. Use the theme art to decorate around the lab. Inside the lab, place a small table and stool. A white lab coat hung on a commando hook adds charm. Supply the lab with a pencil, a notepad, a highlighter, a magnifying glass, and a clipboard. Have vinyl gloves, masks, goggles, flashlights, and test tubes available to test evidence. Make a sign that says: RESTRICTED ACCESS. Hang it near the entrance. To add authenticity, hang a lightweight calculator on the wall. Give the Pr-I Team a number code to punch in and gain access to the lab. Search DIY Lab Coats for Kids for fun, inexpensive ways to make a coat for each student. After reading the theme ideas, search Pinterest or party supply sites on the internet and shop teacher supply stores for ready-made detective agency decorations and props. Make use of the theme art when decorating. The theme is aligned across all Word Aflame children s levels. Connect with those teachers to discuss ideas for making each room a unique investigation station. Post your pictures on our Facebook page so others can see your awesome room. 4

Word Aflame Beginner Door Poster 2018 PPH Plan Ahead Plan now for activities that require multiple copies, unusual supplies, cutouts, or extra helpers. Check all lesson title pages and gather supplies. Recruit teenagers or seniors to help with drawing, copying, or cutting. These lessons need items: Lesson 2: Toilet paper cardboard tubes (1 per student) Lesson 5: Bibles (1 per student) Lesson 9: Strips of construction paper for paper chains (Check online for pre-gummed paper chain supplies.) Before the quarter begins, tear apart the activity papers and sort the papers by lesson for easier distribution each week. Order one set per student with a few extras for visitors and for growth. Room Decoration Mount the door poster (trp), welcoming students to the room. On theme-art badges, add students names around the poster. Walls The theme art is available digitally and can be used with computer projectors, which is great for enlarging art onto walls and portable boards. The Pr-I Team décor will be used throughout the Investigation Station. Use the theme art across the walls. Pr-I Team: PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR TEAM BEGINNER CLASS Cover the teaching wall with yellow paper and mount a writing board for lesson visual aids. Place the Kids in Missions map (trp) and Special Memory Passage poster (trp) to each side. Above the writing board, label the wall: The Pr-I Team. Keep all teaching visuals lower than the teacher s head, except for title letters or banners. Position a desk along the wall. On the desk, store an inkless fingerprint pad (available at office supply stores or online) and pencils. These items will be used with the attendance charts (ap) and memory charts (ap). For each student, prepare a manila folder with the student s name on it. Glue an attendance chart on the front of the folder and a memory chart on the back of the folder. Place folders in a desk tray. CSI Lab (Christian Salvation Investigation Lab) The mission of God s church is to share the gospel. This wall will help students recall the gospel (Jesus death, burial, and resurrection). If creating a CSI Lab, incorporate this wall into the 3-D effect. On the wall, post the Gospel poster (trp). Across the upper wall, add colorful block letters spelling: Christian Salvation Investigation. Make the C, S, and I letters slightly bigger or add form board to the back of each to create a 3-D look. Mount the New Birth poster (trp) on or near the CSI Lab, in a place you can visit regularly during the Bible lesson. 5

Word Aflame Beginner Unit MV Handouts 2018 PPH Word Aflame Beginner Unit MV Handouts 2018 PPH PRIVATE I CLUES Private I Clues The Pr-I Team investigates clues to determine how God gives direction through His Word. Label this wall: Private I Clues. Using the theme art, place the image of a private investigator on the wall. Make this an interactive wall that introduces the Bible Point each week. On large, brightly colored sticky notes, write the Bible Point words (one word per note). Place these, out of order, around the private investigator figure. Challenge the investigators to break the Bible Point code. Help them decipher the correct sequence of words and re-mount the notes in order while teaching the Bible Point. JUST THE FACTS And the Lord direct your Be not afraid, hearts into but speak, and the love hold not thy peace: of God for I am with thee (II Thessalonians 3:5). (Acts 18:9 10). Word Aflame Beginner Unit MV Handouts 2018 PPH And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another (I Thessalonians 3:12). Just the Facts Facts are vital to investigations. Private I s study clues to solve a case. It is a fact that God s Word helps us develop a close relationship with the Savior. It is important to have just the facts no false doctrine allowed! Finding facts from the Book of Acts helps beginner detectives learn about salvation and a godly lifestyle. God s church grows by hiding His Word in our hearts. Mount the unit MV posters (trp) on this wall and label it: Just the Facts. Each week gather students at this wall to study the verse. Point to each word while reciting the verse. Select one or two volunteers to cover a word with a magnifying glass visual. As the unit progresses, fewer words will be visible and students will recite from memory. Bulletin Board Ideas If you are unable to decorate full walls, modify the ideas for bulletin boards. If you decorate entire walls that include bulletin boards, incorporate them into the wall s design. Home Connection Each lesson ends with a few suggested methods to connect the lesson to the home. The Home Connection take-home piece (trp) provides a unit overview, laying out each lesson s biblical text, Bible Point, and life application, as well as suggesting a fun family activity to further stimulate discussion. Please note that all children s levels are included on one sheet, making it easy for parents of children across multiple ages to discuss the day s lesson. In addition we have provided a great weekly family devotional to give to parents, or they can download it by going to the URL address at the bottom of each activity paper ( com/homeconnection). Offering Use a briefcase to collect offering each week. Collect offering as you welcome students so they do not lose it or play with it. Volunteers Purchase inexpensive magnifying glasses. Write each student s name on one and place them inside a briefcase. When a volunteer is needed, select one to see who will help. Return magnifying glasses to the briefcase at the end of class, or after every volunteer has had a turn. Always give students the option to accept or refuse a volunteer position. 6

Teacher Devotional Read Acts 16:6 10; 17:1 4. Prayerfully consider what this passage says: About God How determined is God to get the gospel into hungry hearts? Acts 16 tells us how God rerouted history s greatest missionary, Paul, from entering Asia Minor because a man in Macedonia wanted the good news. That is still how much God wants us to share His good news with others. To You as a Teacher He was a sculptor. At the age of twenty-eight, he had already sculpted what would become one of the world s most famous statues. He signed his letters with Sculptor. Then his boss informed him he was a painter and forced him to paint in an obscure place in an overlooked chapel. The sculptor hated it, fled, but was forced to return and paint. As a result, we now have the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Everyone in Scripture was rerouted by God at some point and they were more effective because of it. It is not about our plans, but our service to His plans. To Your Students Social interaction increases once children enter school. As they explore the world of reading, there are fresh topics and they gain knowledge. Sharing these experiences offers new interaction with friends and critical thinking moments. Beginners eagerly accept God s Word as they realize their need of salvation. As the connection between the gospel and our salvation becomes apparent, children find new confidence in telling others about Jesus. Encourage your students to share their spiritual experiences with others. Teach them to pray for and with their friends. Rejoice with them when a friend visits class. Listen intently if they express disappointment when others do not accept their witness and encourage them. Jesus includes children as workers for His kingdom. CORE (designed for a teaching period around 45 minutes) EXCITE AND ENGAGE Welcome Introduce the Investigation Station to your Beginner Pr-I Team and allow your private investigators to explore the room. Students place offering in the briefcase. Distribute attendance charts (ap) and have students write their names on their charts. Each week when you do the investigators roll call, students sign one badge. Introduce the Bible Point and Life Application: God wants us to share the gospel with others. I will share the gospel with others. God s Detective Agency includes the Pr-I Team. Its task is to investigate facts. Ask each Private I to name one fact about God. Opening Activity: Dots as Friends Say the Bible Point: God wants us to share the gospel with others. Jesus wants us to tell others about Him. Consider how many people you know. How often do you talk with them? 10 Give each student twenty dot stickers, a sheet of paper, and colored pencils. Place one sticker in the center of your paper. This sticker represents you. Draw a smile on your sticker.

Think of three friends. Place three more stickers on your page to represent those friends. Draw a line from you to each of your friends. Discuss how fun it is to share exciting news. Your friends introduce you to their friends. Add three more stickers near each of your friends. Draw a line from each friend to their three friends. Continue until all stickers are used. Count the stickers on your page. This shows us how easy it is to make friends. We can tell those friends about Jesus. RELATE AND RECEIVE Access Prior Experience: What is something you really enjoy sharing with someone else? Bible Lesson: Paul s Vision (Acts 16:6 10; 17:1 4) Gather around a table. Introduce the two Lego figures as Paul and Silas. We are going to join them on a missionary journey found in Acts 16 and 17. Using the blocks, ask students to build small houses representing cities. Place these on the opposite end of the table and lay the blue tissue paper across the middle. Ask a volunteer to build a boat and place it on the tissue paper. Bible Lesson Verse And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them (Acts 16:10). Teacher uses Paul and Silas figures. Paul and Silas loved to tell everyone about Jesus. They would travel great distances to share the good news. One day they were on their way to Asia to tell people about Jesus. Figures start walking. But the Holy Ghost said, Stop! That is not where I want you to go. Then Paul had another idea. Maybe God wants us to go tell the people in Bithynia about Jesus. Figures walk in opposite direction. But the Holy Ghost said, Stop! That is not where I want you to go. Paul and Silas were very confused. Where did God want them to go? Paul prayed, and then he said, I think, maybe, God might want us to possibly go to Troas,... maybe. So that is what they started to do. Actors walk in a third direction. That night Paul had a dream. Figures sleep. In his dream a man was begging him, Come over to Macedonia and help us. When Paul woke up, he knew exactly what to do. Figures stand up. And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them (Acts 16:10). Paul knew the Lord wanted him to take the gospel to Macedonia. Place the figures in the boat and cross the sea. Finally they made it to Macedonia. Show Paul Shares the Gospel Bible art (trp). First, they went to Philippi, the capital city of Macedonia. Place figures near one house. Paul preached the gospel, and there was a great revival. Not everyone believed what he preached however. The leaders of the city beat Paul and Silas and threw them into prison, but God set them free. Demonstrate with the figures. The preachers went to the next town in Macedonia called Thessalonica, where Paul preached. Move the figures to the next house and preach through the Paul figure, Jesus was crucified by some wicked men. He died and was buried, but that is not the end of the story. On the third day, He arose from the dead. He went to Heaven. He sent me to tell you how to be saved from sin. Have students echo as you quote Acts 2:38. 11

In Thessalonica there was great revival and many people believed the gospel. Show the New Birth poster (trp). They obeyed the plan of salvation. But also in Thessalonica, some rude and unbelieving men started a riot. When Paul shared the gospel in Philippi and Thessalonica, the cities had both a revival and a riot. Some people will love it when we tell them about Jesus, while others will fight against it. It does not matter how they respond, God still wants us to share the gospel with others. Paul never stopped telling others about Jesus. He preached the gospel everywhere he went. APPLY AND ACT Life Application: I will share the gospel with others. We want to share the gospel with others. What did Paul see in his dream? Why do you think God sent him to Macedonia? When Paul preached the gospel, what did he tell people about Jesus? Why did Jesus come to earth? Show the Gospel poster (trp) and the New Birth poster (trp). Jesus died, was buried, and rose again so we could be saved. As missionaries, Paul and Silas told people how to be saved repent, be baptized in Jesus name, and receive the Holy Ghost. Distribute paper and drawing supplies. Instruct students to copy your drawing. On one side of the paper, write: GOSPEL. Write GOSPEL across the top of the whiteboard. The gospel is the good news that: Jesus died. Draw a cross. Jesus was buried. Draw a tomb with a large stone. Jesus rose again. Draw a tomb with the stone rolled away. Just like Paul preached the gospel, we can share the gospel with others. What happened when Paul preached the gospel? Some believed and obeyed, while others fought against Paul and Silas. On the other side of the paper, write: SALVATION. Erase the whiteboard and write SALVATION across the top. We obey the plan of salvation when we: Repent. Draw a praying stick figure. Get baptized in Jesus name. Draw a stick figure being baptized. Receive the Holy Ghost. Draw a smiling stick figure with hands lifted. God wants us to share the gospel with our friends and family. I can tell others about Jesus. How can we share the gospel with others? 12

Prayer and Call to Action Ask each student to write on a sticky note the name of a friend, family member, neighbor, or teacher who needs to be saved. Stick all notes on the center of the table. Students select one name that they did not write. Lead in prayer for these people to find salvation. Hand out the prepared Special Mission papers. OK, Pr-I Team. This week you have a special mission. You must try to tell as many people as possible about Jesus. Keep a tally on this sheet of paper of the people you tell and bring it back next week. Ask students to repeat the Life Application after you: I will share the gospel with others. Home Connection For each student, send home a copy of the unit 1 Home Connection calendar (trp) and lesson 1 devotion, or point out the URL on page 2 of the activity paper to parents so they can download it themselves. Send home the cover of the activity paper, showing parents that it contains the memory work for the entire quarter. Use the child information forms to get contact information for parents. This will be used to establish a home connection throughout the quarter. Sometime midweek, text or parents asking them to remind their children about the special mission they are on. Consider offering a prize to the student who tells the most people. EXPANDED (designed for a teaching period over 45 minutes) WORSHIP AND THE WORD Worship Suggested songs: Shine Jesus Shine by Hillsong This Little Light of Mine Memory Work Unit 1 Bible Verses: Be not AFRAID, but SPEAK, and HOLD not thy PEACE: for I am with thee (Acts 18:9 10). Gather at the unit 1 MV poster (trp) and read the verse, noting how certain words are not visible. Point out that the missing words are hidden around the room. Challenge the Pr-I Team to find them. Once the words are found, read the verse together several times, and then cover the poster. Distribute activity papers and pencils. Let students test their memory by writing the missing words in the boxes. Jesus does not want us to be afraid to speak about Him. We should be excited to tell others about Jesus. He wants us to tell others about Him. Explain how investigators use fingerprints to identify people. Show students how to add a fingerprint to one box on their memory charts (ap). 13

REINFORCE AND REVIEW Activity Paper Paul shared the gospel with others. On the back of the activity paper, around the picture of Paul, ask students to draw pictures of people they know who need to hear about Jesus. Option 1: This Little Light Sharing the gospel happens when we share our story about Jesus. What words can you say to share Jesus with a friend? Give an example by sharing your story about Jesus. After your testimony, take a candle from the basket and turn it on. Can you tell your friends about Jesus? Just explain how Jesus saved or healed you. Pass the basket as students take turns sharing their story and taking a candle. Continue until all students are holding a candle. When we share Jesus, we allow His light to shine into the lives of others. I will share the gospel with others. Option 2: MV Relay Instructing students to spread out around the room. Show the basket containing the MV puzzle pieces, letting twelve students select a piece. While being timed, students hurry to the table, put the puzzle in order, and recite the verse. Place all pieces back in the basket and challenge students to beat the time of the first relay. Option 3: Kids in Missions Introduce the Kids in Missions poster (trp). Help students locate the Pacific region on the map. Distribute picture books and allow student discussion regarding the culture and customs in this region. Introduce missionaries Distribute the Kids in Missions handouts and assign each student one prayer request for the missionary family (health, safety, food, clothing, or strength). Lead in prayer, having students insert the words: Jesus, we pray for our missionaries that You give them. 14
