THE PROGRAM OF ISLAMIC STUDIES s core curriculum embraces all the basic elements of what has traditionally been labeled Islamic Studies. This means that our syllabus includes the study of the Qur an, aqidah, akhlaq, fiqh, Sirat un-nabi, ulum ul-hadith, Islamic history and the Arabic language. Each of these subjects is taught in separate grade levels (Pre-K to 12) at the appropriate level of comprehension. This is an extremely important point, given the commonplace practice of having children s Islamic Studies classes use books that are not only contextually unsuitable for 21st century Muslim children living in the West, but are written far above the readability of a particular age-level, thereby preventing students from comprehending and digesting the goals of instruction. s textbooks and workbooks are written and edited by professionally-trained educators who apply uniform readability grids to the instructional material and this allows students to fully absorb and appreciate a lesson s goal. They also fully take into account the cultural environment that today s Muslim children interact with on a daily basis. Our syllabi, as well as our textbooks and workbooks, have been field-tested in a wide range of classrooms - from those found in small community weekend schools to large full-time Islamic schools in well-established centers. 5 WHY SO MANY BOOKS? s program has been developed according to a fixed strategy. Each subject at each grade-level possesses a standard philosophy statement, framework, scope & sequence, and behavioural objectives, which are tailored for that particular grade. Such systematization ensures the cohesive structure of the entire program and it guarantees that each subject and each grade level functions smoothly as part of the whole. Our program has been deliberately designed so that each grade flows smoothly into the next, allowing for effective absorption of Islamic belief and practice as the students grow. s thought-out rationale behind separating subjects into individual textbook allows schools and institutions flexibility. We understand that not every Islamic school is the same; there are vast differences between weekend schools and full-time schools, between small communities with a handful of students and large communities, whose classrooms are bursting at the seams. s strategy allows schools to choose those books that fulfil its curriculum requirements. Not every school, for instance, may have the room to devote large blocks of time to Sirah or to Islamic history, so there is no need to have these textbooks. So instead of spending money on books that will not be fully utilized (a waste of valuable community funds!) allows schools to tailor their programs to fit their specific circumstances. If a school only needs a textbook for Qur anic studies, it won t have to spend a fortune buying a 300-page book of which only 50 pages are to be used! At we believe in the teach it your way approach. Not only does the program provide in-depth focus for each subject area, it reinforces the material at least three times over the entire course of study. Each subject is taught at a higher level of understanding and readability as children grow and mature. And given that time is a priceless commodity, especially for schools, the lessons found in s textbooks match the number of class periods typically found in the academic year (32 to 35) of weekend and full-time Islamic schools. The lesson length is also carefully measured to fit the typical class period s length, which is from 40 to 50 minutes. The readability levels of all textbooks are carefully applied according to the readability standards of the International Reading Association s official reading formulas. Islamic vocabulary words are thoroughly taught to the students through the learning progression. In addition, the system of transliteration for Arabic and foreign words is based on that used by the Library of Congress which we have modified to ensure ease of pronunciation. Each of our textbooks contains a glossary of foreign terms and difficult English words. All textbooks are printed in full color, making them appealing and attractive to students. 6 Qur anic Studies Program The program of Qur anic Studies provides opportunities for students to learn to decode and fluently recite the Arabic text of the Qur an, as well as develop a clear understanding of the core message and teachings of the divine revelation. It also introduces students to the various sciences that deal with the study of the sacred text. The ultimate goal of this program is to help students grow through childhood and adolescence with the Qur an as their guide.
