U.O.No.GAI/J2/3601/08 Vol.II dated Minutes of the meeting of the Board of Studies in Arabic (UG) held on and O R D E R Choice based Credit Semester System and Grading have been introduced in the UG Curriculum of affiliated colleges in the University with effect from 2009 admission onwards and regulation for the same implemented as per the University Order cited first. The meeting of the Board of Studies in Arabic (UG) at its meeting held on and approved the syllabus for BA programme in Afsal-ul-ulama under Choice based Credit Semester System vide paper read 2 nd above. Considering the urgency for implementing the syllabus for BA programme in Afsal-ul-ulama under Choice based Credit Semester System Vice-Chancellor exercising the power of Academic Council approved the minutes of the meeting of the Board of Studies held on subject to ratification by Academic Council. Sanction has therefore been accorded for implementing the syllabus for BA programme in Afsal-ul-ulama under (CCSS) in Arabic colleges with effect from 2009 admission subject to ratification by the Academic Council. 3 INTRODUCTION The Board of Studies in Arabic (UG) of the University of Calicut has two main streams: (1) The Arts & Science Colleges affiliated to Calicut University. (2) Arabic colleges affiliated to Calicut University. Under the new restructured programmes both streams are having: (1) Ten common courses (6 for English and 4 for Languages other than English) (2) 15Core Courses (3) 08 Complementary Courses (4) 01 Open Course (5) 01 Project In the case of Arabic Colleges, they will teach 2 more common courses in Arabic, Course AU1A02 Critical reasoning writing and presentation and AU2A04 Indian Constitution Secularism and sustainable environment besides the 4 courses assigned to languages other than English since they have only one English teacher to teach English in BA Afzal Ulama classes and Preliminary level in their present syllabi. If the above said courses are taught by English teachers, it will affect the present workload of the Arabic teachers seriously. 2

AIM OF THE COURSE To improve the student's ability in listening, speaking and reading English both at the theoretical and practical levels. 2. OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE To introduce the students to the segments and supra-segments of sound in English. To enhance the basic communication skills of the students. To enable the students to use English with fluency and accuracy in everyday situations. To expose them to different varieties of English in order to help them comprehend the language. To enable them to read fast and help them develop the skills of critical comprehension and thinking. 3. COURSE OUTLINE Module I 1. Listening: Sounds (a) Phonemic symbols: Vowels Diphthongs Trip thongs Consonants. (b) Stress: Syllables Word Stress Stress in Monosyllables Stress in Polysyllables Stress in words used as different Parts of Speech Stress in compound words Stress Sentence Stress.
