1 Dhul Hijjah Virtues & Significance One of the Sacred Months In Islam

2 Merits of These Days Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet said, On no days is the worship of Allah desired more than in the (first) ten days of Dhul Hijjah. The fast of each of these days is equal to the fast of a whole year, and the worship of each of these nights is equal to the worship of Laylatul-Qadr. 3 Excellence of the first 10 days of Dhul-Hijjah Ibn Hajar has mentioned in his book (Fath al-bari): The reason for the excellence of the first ten days of Zul-Hijjah is that the Muslim can perform in them the main kinds of worship which are prayer, fasting, charity and Hajj, while he can't gather all these kinds of worship in the other days of the year. قال ا لافظ ابن حجر العسقالين ( فتح ابلاري ب شح صحيح ابلخاري ) 2/534 واذلي يظهر أن السبب يف امتياز ع ش ذي ا لجة لماكن اجتماع أمهات العبادة فيه, والصدقة وا لج, وال يأىت ذلك يف غريه. ويه الصالة والصيام

5 First ten days of Dhul-Hijjah The Prophet said: There are no days on which good deeds are greater or more beloved to Allah than on these ten days, so recite much Tahleel (saying Laa ilaaha ill-allah), Takbeer (saying Allahu Akbar) and Tahmeed (saying Alhamdu Lillaah). فعن ابن عمر ريض اهلل عنهما عن انلب ص ل اهلل عليه وسلم قال: )ما من أيام أعظم عند اهلل وال أحب إ له العمل فيهن من هذه األيام الع ش فأكرثوا فيهن من اتلهليل واتلكبري واتلحميد( ]رواه أمحد[

6 Virtues of These Days The virtue of these ten days is based on many things: Allah swears an oath by them, and swearing an oath by something is indicative of its importance and great benefit. Allah says (meaning): By the dawn; by the ten nights. (Surah Fajr 89:1-2) وإذا أقسم اهلل بيشء دل هذا ىلع عظم ماكنته وفضله إذ العظيم ال يقسم إال بالعظيم قال تعا ل ش ). والليا ل الع ش يه ع ش ذي ا لجة وهذا ما عليه مجهور المفرسين واخللف ري )1( و ل ال ع ج ف ( و ال وقال ابن كثري يف تفسريه: وهو الصحيح.

7 Suggested Deeds For These Days The Prophet instructed those of his followers who could not reach the blessed places, to imitate the pilgrims by not cutting the hair and clipping the nails so that the mercy of Allah can enshroud them too, together with the pilgrims. Umm Salamah said: The Messenger of Allah said, When anyone of you sights the moon of Dhul-Hijjah and anyone of you intends to make sacrifice then let him not touch his hair and his nails i.e. let him refrain (from cutting) his hair and nails. (Muslim) وعن أم سلمة ريض اهلل عنها أن انلب ص ل اهلل عليه وسلم قال : إذا رأيتم هالل ذي ا لجة وأراد أحدكم أن يضيح فليمسك عن شعره وأظفاره. أخرجه مسلم يف كتاب األضايح باب نيه من دخل عليه ع ش ذي ا لجة وهو مريد اتلضحية أن يأخذ من شعره أو أظفاره شيئا

8 Fasting These Days Hunayda ibn Khalid relates from his wife, who relates from one of the wives of the Messenger of Allah, who says, The Messenger of Allah would fast the [first] nine days of Dhul Hijjah, the day of Ashura and the three days of every month: The first Monday of every month and the following two Thursdays. (Nasa i: 2417) Imam An-Nawawi recommended to fast the ten days as he said: Fasting these days is highly recommended. 10 days means 9 days from the 1st of Dhul Hijjah as it is prohibited to fast on the days of Eid. وعن هنيدة بن خادل عن امرأته قالت حدثتين بعض نساء انلب ص ل اهلل عليه وسلم أن انلب ص ل اهلل عليه وسلم : اكن يصوم يوم اعشوراء وتسعا من ذي ا لجة وثالثة أيام من الشهر أو اإلثنني من الشهر ومخيسني. أخرجه النسايئ يف السنن الكربى رقم ( 2681 ) وقد قال اإلمام انلووي يف تفسريه ( رشح صحيح مسلم (: 4/328 والمراد بالع ش هنا: األيام التسعة من أول ذي ا لجة وهذا مما يتأول فليس يف صوم هذه التسعة كراهة بل يه مستحبة استحبابا شديدا السيما اتلاسع منها وهو يوم عرفة

9 Day of Arafah Receive the glad tidings of a day wherein Allah removes one s faults and sins. Allah s Messenger said: There is no day upon which Allah frees His servants from the Hellfire more than the day of Arafat. He draws near and then He praises them to the angels, saying: What do these want? عن اعئشة ريض اهلل عنه قالت : إن رسول اهلل ص ل اهلل عليه وسلم قال : ( ما يمن يوم أكرث من أن يعتق اهلل فيه عبدا من انلار من يوم عرفة وإنه لدنو ثم يبايه بهم المالئكة فيقول : ما أراد هؤالء ) رواه مسلم

10 Features of The Day of Arafah Fasting on the day of Arafah expiates the sins of two years. i.e. preceding year and coming year. The best supplication is that which is made on the day of Arafah. The best of it is what could be said on the day of Arafah is: There is no god but Allah alone without any partners, unto Him belong the dominion and all praise and He has power over all things. عن أ ب قتادة ريض اهلل عنه أن رسول اهلل ص ل اهلل عليه وسلم سئل عن صوم يوم عرفة فقال: )يكفر السنة الماضية والسنة القابلة(رواه مسلم )خري ادلاعء داعء يوم عرفة وخري ما قلت أنا وانلبيون من قب ل: ال إ ل إال اهلل وحده ال رشيك ل ل الملك و ل ا لمد وهو ىلع ك يشء قدير( رواه الرتمذي

11 Desirable To Increase Dhikr The Prophet commanded us to recite a lot of Tasbeeh (Subhan Allah), Tahmeed (Al-hamdu Lillah) and Takbeer (Allahu Akbar) during this time. Abdullah Ibn 'Umar reported that the Prophet said: There are no days greater in the sight of Allah and in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Him than these ten days, so during this time recite a great deal of Tahleel (La ilaaha illa Allah), Takbeer (Allahu Akbar) and Tahmeed (Al-hamdu Lillah) (Ahmed). فعن ابن عمر ريض اهلل عنهما عن انلب ص ل اهلل عليه وسلم قال:)ما من أيام أعظم عند اهلل وال أحب إ له العمل فيهن من هذه األيام الع ش فأكرثوا فيهن من اتلهليل واتلكبري واتلحميد( ]رواه أمحد[

12 Takbeer From the Fajr of Arafah day up to the Asr of the last days of Tashreeq (i.e. 13 th of Dhul Hijjah). Allah says: And remember Allah in the appointed Days. It is to say: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La Ilaha Ill-Allahu, Allahu Akbar, Wa Lillahil-hamd (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah; Allah is the Greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise) Men are to say it aloud in the Masajid, homes, etc. and at the end of each Fardh prayer as a declaration of the Greatness of Allah, acknowledging His worship only and showing gratitude to Him.

13 ي Method & Timing Of Takbeer Men should recite these phrases out loud, and women should recite them quietly. After every Fardh Salah. From the 9th Fajr to 13th Asr 5 DAYS IN TOTAL = 9,10,11,12,13 23 Prayers فاذلي عليه فقهاء األمصار والمشاهري من الصحابة واتلابعني ىلع أن المراد باتلكبري ك أحد وخصوصا يف أوقات الصلوات فيكرب عند ٱنقضاء ك صالة اكن المص ل وحده أو يف مجاعة تكبريا ظاهرا يف هذه األيام ٱقتداء بالس ل ف ريض اهلل عنهم. ويف المخترص: وال ي يكرب النساء د ب ر الصلوات. واأل ي ول أشهر ألنه يلزمها حكم اإلحرام اكلرجل قا ل يف المد ي ونة. أنه يبتدأ بها من صالة الفجر يوم عرفة وينقطع بعد صالة العرص من يوم انلحر من آخر أيام الت شيق فتكون اتلكبريات بعد ثالث وع شين صالة وهو قول أاكبر الصحابة كع ل وعمر وابن مسعود وابن عباس ومن الفقهاء قول اثلوري وأبي يوسف وحممد وأمحد وإسحاق والمزين وابن رشيح وعليه عمل انلاس بابلدلان ويدل عليه : ما روى جابر أن انلبي ص ل اهلل عليه وسلم ص ل الصبح يوم عرفة ثم أقبل علينا فقال: اهلل أكرب ومد اتلكبري إ ل العرص من آخر أيام الت شيق * تفسري مفاتيح الغيب اتلفسري الكبري/ الرازي )ت 606 ه( فقد ثبت عن الصحابة أكرث من صيغة منها أثر ابن مسعود ريض اهلل عنه : " أنه اكن يكرب أيام الت شيق : اهلل أكرب اهلل أكرب ال إ ل إال اهلل و اهلل أكرب اهلل أكرب وهلل ا لمد " أخرجه ابن أ ب شيبة بسند صحيح

14 Origins Of Takbeer When Ibrahim began to fulfil the directive of Allah, Jibril descended from the sky with the substitute (sheep) pronouncing Allahu Akbar to alert Ibrahim Ibrahim looked towards the sky and realized that a substitute has been sent, he pronounced La Ilaha Illallah Wallahu Akbar. His son Ismail overheard Ibrahim glorifying Allah, consequently he rose up to eulogize and thank Allah Ta'ala too saying Allahu Akbar wa Lillahil Hamd ويف المبسوط ان اصله ان ابراهيم عليه السالم لما اشتغل بمقدمات ذبح ودله جاء جربيل بالفداء من السماء فخاف العجلة فنادي اهلل ي اكرب فلما سمع ابراهيم رفع راسه ا ل السماء فعلم انه جاء بالفداء فقال الا ل االاهلل واهلل ي اكرب فسمعه اذلبيح فقال اهلل ي اكرب وهلل ا لمد فصار ذالك سنة ا ل يوم القيامة )الهداية - كتاب األضايح(

15 Hasten to Perform Hajj Allah s Messenger said: Hasten to perform Hajj (meaning the obligatory Hajj) for none of you knows what will happen to him! Abu Huraira reported Allah s Messenger as saying: An Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed between it and the next, and Hajj which is accepted will receive no other reward than Paradise. عن ابن عباس عن انلب ص ل اهلل عليه وسلم قال : تعجلوا إ ل ا لج يعين الفريضة فإن أحدكم ال يدري ما يعرض ل رواه أمحد يف الصحيحني عن أ ب هريرة أن انلب ص ل اهلل عليه وسلم قال: العمرة إ ل العمرة كفارة لما بينهما وا لج المربور ليس ل جزاء إال اجلنة

16 The Accepted Pilgrimage Al-Hasan al-basri said: The accepted pilgrimage is the one which this who performed it returns indifferent to this world and aspiring for the hereafter. It is said that: One of the signs of the accepted pilgrimage is that it appears by its end. If one returns in a better condition than before, it is known then that it is accepted. وقال ا لسن ابلرصي رمحه اهلل :ا لج المربور أن يرجع زاهدا يف ادلنيا راغبا يف اآلخرة. من عالمات ا لج المربور: إن ذلك يظهر بآخره فإن رجع خريا مما اكن عرف أنه مربور

17 Hajj: The Symbol of Unity The principle of unity is very clear in Hajj. Muslims from every gender, language, color and nationality come to one place. Their dress is the same, their work is the same, their place is the same, and their time is the same. A unity in feelings, unity in rituals, unity in goals, unity in efforts and unity word. Together for One Cause: All Differences Set Aside

18 Doing Good Deeds In General If you are not able to go to Hajj then occupy yourself by doing the following: Pray (Salah) Read Qur an Remember Allah Supplication (Du a) Give Charity Honor Your Parents Uphold Ties Of Kinship Enjoin What Is Good/ Forbid What Is Evil

19 Sincere Repentance One of the most important things to do during these ten days is to repent sincerely to Allah and to give up all kinds of disobedience and sin. If a Muslim commits a sin, he must hasten to repent, without delay, because he does not know when he will die, and because one evil deed leads to another. Turn to Allah and forego all deeds (open & secret) that He dislikes. Show regret for having sinned. Give it up immediately. Vow never to return to it. Stick firmly to the truth by doing only what Allah loves.

20 Udhiyah Udhiyah refers to the animal (camel, cattle, goat or sheep) offered as a sacrifice. It is an act of worship dedicated solely to gain Allah s pleasure. Udhiyah is a confirmed Sunnah or Sunnah Muakkadah (emphasised Sunnah) according to the majority of scholars while many other scholars hold the opinion that Udhiyah is Wajib. Warning In Hadith Whoever can afford to offer a sacrifice but does not do so, let him not approach our place of prayer. (Ahmed, Ibn Maajah & others) ح من اإلبل وابلقر والغنم يوم انلحر وأيام الت شيق ىلع كيفية خمصوصة تقربا هلل - سبحانه وتعا ل"القاموس الفقيه" ذب اسم لما ي نحر أو ي األضحية سنة مؤكدة يف حق المورس وهذا قول أكرث العلماء وممن قال به أبو بكر الصديق وعمر بن اخلطاب وبالل وسويد بن غفلة وأبو مسعود ابلدري وسعيد بن المسيب وسفيان اثلوري وابن المبارك وعطاء وعلقمة واألسود ومالك يف القول المشهور عنه والشافيع وأمحد وأبو يوسف وحممد والزعفراين من ا لنفية وإسحاق وأبو ثور والمزين وداود وابن حزم الظاهريان وابن المنذر وغريهم القول اثلاين: األضحية واجبة وبهذا قال مجاعة من أهل العلم ىلع اختالف بينهم يف حق من جتب : فقال ربيعة الرأي والليث بن سعد واألوزايع ومالك يف قول عنه األضحية واجبة ىلع المقيم والمسافر المورس إال ا لاج بمين فال جتب عليه وإنما الم شوع يف حقه الهدي وقال أبو حنيفة األضحية واجبة يف حق المقيم المورس وهو قول زفر وا لسن ورواية عن أ ب يوسف وحممد. واختار شيخ اإلسالم ابن تيمية القول بوجوب األضحية الهداية مع تكملة رشح فتح القدير 425 8/ تبيني ا لقائق 2 6/ بدائع الصنائع 193 4/ ملتىق األحبر 222 2/ عقود اجلواهر المنيفة 70 2/ جمموع فتاوى شيخ اإلسالم 23/.162 روي عن عبد الرمحن األعرج عن أ ب هريرة أن رسول اهلل -ص ل اهلل عليه وسلم- قال «من اكن ل سعة ولم يضح فال يقربن مصالنا «. رواه أمحد وابن ماجه وادلارقطين وا لاكم

21 Who Is Required To Perform Udhiyah? Every adult Muslim, male or female, who owns grams of silver or its equivalent in money, personal ornaments, stock-in-trade or any other form of wealth which is surplus to his basic needs, is under an obligation to offer Udhiyah. Each adult member of a family who owns the above mentioned amount must perform their own Udhiyah separately. No Alternate for Udhiyah! Some people think that instead of offering Udhiyah they can give its amount to the poor people as charity. This assumption is totally wrong. Udhiyah is an independent form of worship and this obligation cannot be discharged by spending money in charity. يشرتط يف المضيح أن يكون غنيا أي مالاك نلصاب الزاكة فاضال عن حواجئه األصلية ود للهم ىلع ذلك ما ورد يف ا لديث: )من وجد سعة فلم يضح فال يقربن مصالنا( فالرسول - ص ل اهلل عليه وسلم - رشط عليه السعة ويه الغين وهو أن يكون يف ملكه مئتا درهم أو ع شون دينارا أو يشء تبلغ قيمته ذلك سوى مسكنه وما يتأثث به وكسوته وكسوة من يمونهم بدائع الصنائع 196 4/ حاشية ابن اعبدين / واذلي أرجحه أن األضحية م شوعة يف حق الغين اذلي يملك نصاب الزاكة فاضال عن حواجئه األصلية الكتاب: المفصل يف أحاكم األضحية

22 Reward For Udhiyah When a person sacrifices a Udhiyah animal, he is forgiven. The animal shall be brought forward on the Day of Judgment with its meat etc. and shall be increased in weight seventy times more than its own weight, and thereafter it will be placed on the scale of deeds. (Sunan al-bayhaqi) A reward for every fibre of wool and hair of the sacrificed animal is recorded. وروى ابليهىق بإسناده عن ىلع بن أ ب طالب - ريض اهلل عنه - أن رسول اهلل - ص ل اهلل عليه وسلم - قال لفاطمة ريض اهلل عنها: يا فاطمة قويم فاشهدي أضحيتك أما إن لك بأول قطرة تقطر من دمها مغفرة للك ذنب أما إنه جياء بها يوم القيامة بلحومها ودمائها سبعني ضعفا حىت توضع يف مزيانك. سنن ا لهىق 283 9/ عن زيد بن أرقم قال: قال أصحاب انلب ص ل اهلل عليه وسلم: يا رسول ا ي هلل ما هذه األضايح قال: )سنة أبيكم إبراهيم( قالوا: فما نلا فيها قال: )بكل شعرة حسنة( قالوا: فالصوف قال: )بكل شعرة من الصوف حسنة( أخرجه أمحد يف مسنده )4/368(

23 ي ي ي Prerequisites for the Animal to be sacrificed The animal should reach the required age, which is six months for a lamb, one year for a goat, two years for a cow and five years for a camel. It should be free of any faults, because the Prophet said: There are four that will not do for sacrifice: a one-eyed animal whose defect is obvious, a sick animal whose sickness is obvious, a lame animal whose limp is obvious and an emaciated animal that has no marrow in its bones. اتفق مجهور أهل العلم ىلع أنه ال جيزئ من اإلبل وابلقر والمعز إال اثلين فما فوقه ويجزئ من الضأن اجلذع فما فوقه انظر إعالء السنن / اجلذع من الضأن ما تمت ل ستة أشهر فيجوز أن يضيح به إذا اكن اجلذع عظيما حبيث لو خلط باثلنيات يشتبه ىلع انلاظر من بعد واثلين من الضأن والمعز ما أتم سنة. واثلين من ابلقر ما أتم سنتني.واثلين من اإلبل ما أتم مخس سنني تبيني ا لقائق 7 6/ بدائع الصنائع / أربع ال جتوز يف األضايح كما يف حديث الرباء بن اعزب ريض اهلل عنه قال : قال رسول اهلل ص ل اهلل عليه وسلم : " أربع ال جتوز يف األضايح: العوراء ابلني عورها والمريضة ها ( أي: عرجها ) والكسري) أي: المنكرسة ) ويف لفظ: والعجفاء ( أي: المهزولة( الىت ال تنىق ( أي: ال مخ لها لضعفها وهزالها ) ع ابلني مرضها والعرجاء ابلني ظ ل أخرجه أمحد وأصحاب السنن بسند صحيح.

24 Time for the sacrifice Udhiyah takes place after the Eid Prayer on the Day of Nahr or Eid Al-Adha and is carried out during the three days of Eid, namely the 10th, 11th and 12th of Dhul Hijjah with the intention of offering sacrifice. The Prophet said: Whoever sacrifices before the prayer, let him repeat it. (Bukhari and Muslim). وعن أنس ريض اهلل عنه قال: قال رسول اهلل ص ل اهلل عليه وسلم يوم انلحر: )من اكن ذبح قبل الصالة فليعد فقام رجل فقال يا رسول اهلل... ) رواه ابلخاري ومسلم وقت اذلبح بغروب شمس ا لوم اثلاين من أيام الت شيق أي أن أيام انلحر ثالثة يوم العيد ويومان بعده. ينتيه وهذا قول عمر وىلع وابن عمر وابن عباس وأ ب هريرة ريض اهلل عنهم وهو قول ا لنفية والمالكية وا لنابلة وبه قال اثلوري وابراهيم انلخيع ن يهيم ةي األ م ا ر ز ق ه م يمن ب عا يم سورة ا لج اآلية 28. ات ىلع ل وم ع ام م ي ييف أ ي احتجوا بقو ل تعا ل: لي ش ه د وا م ن افيع ل ه م و ي ذ ك ر وا اس م اهلل فحملوا األيام المعلومات ىلع يوم انلحر ويومني بعده قال ا لافظ ابن عبد الرب: وروي ذلك عن ابن عمر - ريض اهلل عنه - من وجوه. عن مالك وعن أ ب يوسف أيضا أنهما قاال: اذلي نذهب إ له يف األيام المعلومات أنها أيام انلحر: يوم انلحر ويومان بعده ألن اهلل تعا ل قال: وروينا ا يم سورة ا لج اآلية 28. ب يهيم ةي األ ن ع.)2( فع ل قول مالك ومن تابعه يوم انلحر معلوم أي من المعلومات ليس بمعدود أي ليس من المعدودات وا لومان بعده معدودات معلومات وهو قول مجاعة من الصحابة هم عمر وىلع وابن عباس وأ ب هريرة ريض اهلل عنهم قال اإلمام أمحد: ]أيام انلحر ثالثة عن غري واحد من أصحاب رسول اهلل ص ل اهلل عليه وسلم[. ويف رواية أخرى عنه قال: ]مخسة من أصحاب رسول اهلل[. وروى مالك عن نافع أن ابن عمر - )2( االستذاكر 200 /15 ريض اهلل عنه - قال: ]األضيح يومان بعد يوم األضيح[ وبه قال اإلمام مالك وأصحابه وأبو يوسف القايض. ي ذ ك ر وا اس م اهلل و م ا ر ز ق ه م يمن ات ىلع ل وم ع ام م ي ييف أ ي

25 What should be done with the sacrifice? It is recommended to divide the meat into three: One third for consumption One third to be given as gifts One third to be given in charity Scholars agree that it is not permissible to sell anything from its meat, fat or skin. The Prophet said: Whoever sells the skin of his Udhiyah, there is no Udhiyah for him (i.e., it is not counted as Udhiyah). فتح ابلاري / أنه يستحب قسمتها أثالثا لقو ل: )لكوا وتصدقوا وأطعموا( ورد عن انلب ص ل اهلل عليه وسلم أنه قال: )من باع جدل أضحيته فال أضحية ل( رواه ا لاكم وقال: حديث صحيح. ورواه ابليهىق

26 Recommendation to eat from the meat of the sacrifice It is mustahabb (preferable) for one who has made a sacrifice not to eat anything on that day before he eats from it, if this is possible, because of the Hadith, Let every man eat from his sacrifice. (Ahmed ). This eating should be after the `Eid Prayer and Khutbah. ويستحب لمن أراد أن يضيح يف يوم األضيح أن خيرج إ ل صالة العيد وال يأك شيئا حىت يص ل ثم يذبح أضحيته منها وهذا قول أكرث العلماء االستذاكر 37 /7 المغين 275 /2 فتح ابلاري /3 عن أ ب هريرة عن انلب ص ل اهلل عليه وسلم قال: إذا ضيح أحدكم فليأك من أضحيته رواه أمحد ورجا ل رجال الصحيح فيأك

27 Partaking of the Udhiyah meat Buraidah reported: The Prophet would not go out on the day of breaking the fast ( Eid al-fitr) until he had eaten and on the day of sacrifice ( Eid al Adha) he would not eat until he had returned (from Salah) This is related by Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah and also by Sunan Ad- Darami who added: And he would eat from his sacrifice.
