1 حلية ( E J E W E L S F O R T H E S E E K E R O F K N O W L E D G D A Y 1 ) طالب العلم 30 SEPTEMBER DHUL HIJJAH 1436 INTRODUCTION Guidance and faith need fuel and their fuel is knowledge, what type of knowledge? The beneficial knowledge that will increase you in faith of the unseen. We cannot see Allah (swt), the Last Day, the Messengers, but we need knowledge. Knowledge is not for the brain, but for the heart to make it alive. Your heart life is what you believe, not what you see. The parable that Allah (swt) gives for beneficial knowledge is like water that comes from above. It means our knowledge needs to come from above, it s divine not touched by human hands. When you first begin in knowledge, you feel excited about the information but as you go into it, and it s a life journey, then you see yourself full of sins and that s a mercy from Allah (swt). This period is critical because people can leave at this point but don t stop. The more you discover your faults, the more you need to increase the dose of knowledge. Then you will have taqwa, then your heart gets purified and you taste the pleasure of knowledge. Previous seekers of knowledge were so dedicated that for food they would dip their biscuit in something warm in order to eat it faster, subhan Allah. One student of knowledge was at his death bed and heard a hadith and asked for his paper to write it in his notes, subhan Allah. For acquiring knowledge, it s not about having a plan and saying I will become a teacher, unlike in the duniya when you get a degree and say I will be a teacher, doctor, etc. Acquiring knowledge is a worship and Allah (swt) will open for you. 1
2 The responsibility you will have when acquiring knowledge is great. If you don t have the correct foundation, then the knowledge can be against you and it can be a poison to you and to others. The messengers never asked to be messengers, similarly students of knowledge don t ask to be teachers, Allah (swt) gives them. Now there are desires about wanting titles to be called scholar, da ee, etc. May Allah (swt) protect us. Ameen. And this is more dangerous to want religious titles than duniya titles because the first ones to be thrown in the hellfire are the ones who wanted to be called scholars but not for the sake of Allah (swt). You will find problems from students of knowledge and teachers because the foundation is wrong. It s not about knowledge first, but having correct manners. We don t want to be a fitna for each other. حلية ( E J E W E L S F O R T H E S E E K E R O F K N O W L E D G ) طالب العلم A seeker of knowledge means you need to go to the knowledge, it won t come to you. And the more you go to seek it, the more you will be given. (الحلية في الطالب نفسه ( HIMSELF ADORNMENT IN THE SEEKER OF KNOWLEDGE 2
3 بسم هللا الرحمن الرحيم (1) Seeking knowledge is a worship عبادة) :(العلم the scholars said knowledge is a secret prayer in the heart, subhan Allah. The more you learn knowledge the more it s impacting your heart. Seeking knowledge is one of the greatest worships after the obligations, better than the voluntaries. To seek knowledge is to struggle for the sake of Allah (swt) because it is spreading Islam peacefully. There are many virtues to seeking knowledge, even angels lower their wings out of respect to the seeker of knowledge. The angels, the fish, the ants all make istighfar for the seeker of knowledge. When Allah (swt) wants the good for a slave, He will make him understand the details of the deen. But our problem is ingratitude when we complain about the students, teacher, seats, etc. And of course Allah (swt) will test you for your gratitude. و م ا ك ا ن ٱل م ؤ م ن و ن ل ي نف ر وا ڪا ف ة ف ل و ل ن ف ر م ن ك ل ف ر ق ة من ہ م ط ا ٮ ف ة لي ت ف ق ه وا ف ى ٱلدي ن و ل ي نذ ر وا ق و م ه م إ ذ ا ر ج ع و ا ( :122 Surah At Tawbah (And it is not (proper) for the believers to go out to fight all together. Of every troop of ) إ ل ي ہ م ل ع ل ه م ي ح ذ ر و ن them, a party only should go forth, that they (who are left behind) may get instructions in (Islâmic) religion, and that they may warn their people when they return to them, so that they may beware (of evil).) The intention for knowledge is to lift ignorance from myself and from others. But it s important to not seek revenge through knowledge, for example if a wife is upset with her husband, she will say a hadith to make him feel bad but Allah (swt) knows our intentions. This is dangerous to use Quran and Sunnah for your desires. (2) Any worship needs ikhlas and itiba (following the Sunnah). 3
4 ) و م ا أ م ر و ا إ ل ل ي ع ب د وا ٱ لل م خ ل ص ي ن ل ه ٱلدي ن ح ن ف ا ء و ي ق يم وا ٱلص ل و ة و ي ؤ ت وا ٱلز ك و ة و ذ ٲل ك د ي ن ٱلق يم ة ( :5 Ikhlas: Surah Al Bayyinah (And they were commanded not, but that they should worship Allâh, and worship none but Him Alone (abstaining from ascribing partners to Him), and perform As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât) and give Zakât: and that is the right religion). When you re seeking knowledge, your heart can turn to others besides Allah (swt). What is better, to seek knowledge for five hours or stay at home read Quran, pray, fast? Seeking knowledge because you are struggling more, and you are remembering Allah (swt) with others, it needs dedication. With ikhlas and knowledge your will reach a high level but knowledge without ikhlas will be the lowest. What can spoil the ikhlas? Love to be a known student ( الظهور :(حب you like to be in the spotlight and be known among the students. Love to be number one in the class :(التفوق) to have that good reputation amongst others. Love for others to look up to you and magnify you ( الناس :(تعظيم it s just a feeling in the heart. Love to get gifts / money: the righteous predecessors used to reject gifts from the rulers because of they re afraid it can affect their intention. Even in school, students are not supposed to give gifts to the teachers. And this should be more so in the deen. (المحمده) Love to be praised, get titles Attending class only to escape the dispraise of others: for example, someone might be unable to attend so people will ask why didn t you come and they put pressure on the person they could end up lying, etc. And not everyone s nature is the same, some are shy and it s hard for them to say. وعن أبي هريرة رضي هللا عنه قال: قال رسول هللا صلى هللا عليه وسلم " من تعلم علما مما يبتغى به وجه هللا عز وجل ل يتعلمه ( Hadith: him) (Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with (إل ليصيب به عرضا من الدنيا لم يجد ع رف الجنة يوم القيامة" يعني ريحها said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "A person who acquires (religious) knowledge, which is (normally) acquired to gain the Pleasure of Allah, (for the sole reason) to secure worldly comforts will not even smell the fragrance of Jannah on the Day of Resurrection) Abu Dawud Book 18, Hadith 1620 o You need to be careful because Allah (swt) is looking at our hearts. Someone might be acquiring knowledge for a certificate and someone might be acquiring knowledge for being praised, which is worse? To seek it for praise. Ikhlas is to seek praise and good reputation from Allah (swt) alone, not from others, not even angels we don t want anything from the slaves. We are poor and we can t see the full picture. Allah (swt) is the One Who rewards and punishes and in His Hands are everything. ADORNMENT OF BEING ON THE PATH OF THE COMPANIONS (PREDECESSORS) ( (طريق السلف على كن حلية 4
5 They are those who preceded us in faith from companions and followers (tabieen). Don t look at those currently with you because their exam has not ended. You want to take the results of those who finished and passed already. The way of the righteous predecessors is to learn without arguing. Their way was we listen, we believe and we obey ( و آمنا و صدقنا و اطعنا.(سمعنا Sometimes we argue just to prove our point, for our ego. Make the knowledge easy on you, don t make it difficult. If you don t understand it, Allah (swt) will make you understand it when the time is right. What can you say after Allah (swt) says and the Prophet (ﷺ) says? Subhan Allah. Iblis was casted out of paradise because he argued with Allah (swt), he said he is created from clay and I am created from fire, subhan Allah. The deen by itself is beautiful and complete, you don t need to argue. The righteous predecessors would not go and bring things from their minds. Those who just philosophize have no evidence, they just think and think and you end up with a different aqeedah, subhan Allah. For example, Allah (swt) says He rose over the throne, but what do people of philosophizing say? How did He rise over the throne, istaghfar Allah. And some can t explain it so they completely negate it. You just need to believe, we cannot grasp Allah (swt). This ends up leading to deviation. (حلية مالزمة خشية هللا ( (SWT) ADORNMENT OF ALWAYS FEARING ALLAH In order to truly benefit from the knowledge, you need to always fear Allah (swt). Just as a student in school has fear of failure so he s motivated to do good. A seeker of knowledge fears Allah (swt). Someone who doesn t fear Allah (swt) might learn, but there will be no barakah in his knowledge he will not act on it, he will do contrary to the knowledge, he will forget it and he will fail,thus losing the reward, may Allah (swt) protect us. Ameen. 5
6 The one who fears Allah (swt), then Allah (swt) will put barakah in his knowledge, He will increase him in guidance, faith, and taqwa. He will act upon the knowledge without even realizing, subhan Allah. May Allah (swt) make us true seekers of knowledge. Ameen 6
