1 VOL XXXIII BULLETIN FRIDAY 25 TH APRIL, 2014 No st Aminu Kano Lecture: Prof Fagge advised that to Democratic Reversal May Mar 2015 Elections Prof. amend such democratic lapses and to put Nigeria into the path Habu Fagge of becoming one of the Nigeria s democratic reversal influenced by party politics, electoral violence, insecurity, ethnicity, religious bigotry, incumbency influence and lack of ideology will deter the country from realizing its potential of conducting credible elections in 2015 and Nigerians may witness a repeat of what happened in This assertion was made by Professor Habu Muhammad Fagge of the Political Science Department at the 31 st Aminu Kano Annual Memorial Lecture held at the Aminu Kano Center for Democratic Research and Training (AKCDRT), Mambayya House on Thursday, 17 th April, He said some small African countries like Botswana and Senegal have gone a long way in democratization through entrenching credible elections, saying the situation in Nigeria is pathetic and has continued to go from bad to worse. Prof. Fagge, who spoke on the Issues on Credible Elections: Appraising the Nigerian Situation lamented that money bag politicians have dominated the political circle in the country, taking advantage of the poverty stricken people and it is alleged that the continuous insecurity in the North-East is gradually politicized in order to force INEC not to conduct elections in some states, so that many Nigerians would be disenfranchised to favour other parties. He further explained that in the 80s political parties such as NEPU and PRP were deeply structured under the purview of ideological standpoints, but the present-day parties suffer from good political ideologies. He also advised that there must be an attitudinal change and people needed to be adequately mobilized and enlightened to spurn the politics of ethnicity, tribe and religion. Earlier, the former Vice Chancellor, Professor Dandatti Abdulkadir, who was an associate of the late Malam Aminu Kano, spoke about the reflections of his politics. Also speaking on Malam Aminu Kano s political reflections, his associate and good friend, Sarkin Yakin Lokoja, M.K. Ahmed, said the former P.R.P. henchman was blessed with words of wisdom and he and many others learnt a lot from him. He cited many examples. The conference, which had in attendance renowned Islamic Banking experts from across the globe, was chaired by the executive Governor of Niger State, Alhaji Dr. Mu azu Babangida Aliyu. Speaking shortly before he declared the conference open, Dr. Mu azu Babangida Aliyu, represented by his Justice Commissioner, Barrister Abdullahi Bawa, commended the management of BUK for the leading role it is playing in institutionalizing the teaching and research in the area of Islamic Banking and Finance among the nation s Universities. He said apart from such excellent role in Islamic Banking in Africa, BUK has achieved a lot in physical and academic transformation. Islamic Banking, Governor Babangida said, has a vital role to play in national economic development. I, therefore, urge everyone to take interest in it. While delivering a keynote address at the conference, Dr. Sunusi Lamido Sunusi, the Danmajen Kano and former Governor of Central Bank, who is the initiator and originator of Islamic Banking in Nigeria, said Islamic Banking has come to stay in spite of the many unfounded reservations about it. He advised that every effort should be put in place to sustain it. He commended the Osun State Governor for injecting about ten million dollars into Islamic Banking and called on other states and
3 3 individuals to emulate the commendable example of Osun State. In his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, mni, MFR, said the conference was convened in order to shift emphasis from theory to the practical aspects of Islamic Banking, assuring that the management of BUK would do everything humanly possible to support and encourage the institute to achieve its desired objectives. They emerged 5 th with 8 gold, one silver and 4 bronze medals. All the gold medalists each received N100,000, Silver medalist N70,000 and Bronze medalist N40,000. Speaking at the occasion, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed mni, MFR described the performance of the BUK athletes as not only outstanding, but also exceptional, saying that the outcome of the 24 th edition of NUGA was the best for BUK. It should not surprise anyone if the management decides to reward them handsomely as is being done today, he remarked. The Vice Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Professor Muhammad Yahuza Bello, said it had been the policy of Bayero University not to use mercenaries (hired students) in competitions of this nature, but always insisted on using our own students even if it means not wining any laurels. He said the university was happy with the 5 th position it took and assured that the management would continue to do everything humanly possible to support and encourage students to participate in all sporting events, including staff. Professor Rasheed stated that in the past the university used to reward athletes who won gold with N40,000, silver N30,000 while bronze N20,000, saying that management deliberately reviewed the amount upward as part of the efforts to encourage and support the participation of students in sporting events, which he believed was very important for their health and wellbeing. He thanked the Chairman of the university s Consultative Committee, Professor Muhammad Ibrahim Yakasai, the Director of Sports,
4 4 Professor M.G. Yakasai, the coaching crew and the participating students for making the university proud. In his address, Chairman of the Consultative Committee, Professor M.I.Yakasai, said the feat performed by the students would not have been possible without the support they have been receiving from the management and thanked the Vice Chancellor for the support extended to the Sports Directorate. He said Bayero University participated in 8 games Athletics, Basket Ball, Judo, Badminton, Taekwando, Chess, Football and Table Tennis, but stated that it was in 5 games that medals were won.
