1 VOL XXXI BULLETIN FRIDAY 3 RD AUGUST, 2012 NO. 29 VC Receives Giant NUGA 5 Aside Trophy The Vice Chancellor, Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, mni, received the giant NUGA 5 Aside trophy, won by the University s football team in Lagos during the just concluded FUTSAL Championship. The Director of Sports, Dr. Musa Garba Yakasai, who handed the trophy and 15 gold medals to the Vice Chancellor in a colourful ceremony attended by the players and their technical crew on Monday 29 th July, 2012, said despite featuring for the first time in the 5 Aside competition, the BUK team surmounted stiff challenges from high profile Universities like U. I., ABU Zaria, AAUE and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and stole the show by winning the giant trophy. 2 2 Maude and the championship s highest goal scorer with 8 goals, Olaniyi Johnson, were selected to represent NUGA at the World Universities 5 Aside championship in Praga, Portugal, from 18 th 25 th August, He emphasized that the players heroism and talismanic display drew the attention of the Lagos mammoth crowd to cheer the BUK s dream team to victory. Dr. Yakasai expressed appreciation to the team manager, coaches and the staff of the Directorate for forming a formidable leadership that ensured success in the competition. Responding, the highly elated Vice Chancellor, Professor Abubakar Rasheed, mni, said he was overwhelmed by the spirited efforts of the BUK contingent and congratulated them on behalf of the entire community for bringing the NUGA 5 Aside first edition trophy to the pyramid city. While decorating the team members with the gold medals, the Vice Chancellor announced the cash reward of N20,000 to each player and N50,000 to the Sports Director, while the coaches, the Team Manager and the SUG Sports Director were to share N100,000. Prof. Rasheed directed that one of the hockey pitches should be converted into a 5 Aside playing ground. He further expressed the Management s continued determination to support sports development in the University. In a response to the team captain s complaint that some lecturers were not excusing athletes on sporting assignments, the Vice Chancellor directed the Sports Director to always inform the University Management in writing, so that the lecturers concerned would be made aware of the students going out for competitions. PG School Cancels the Offer of Admission of 13 PhDs T he School of Postgraduate Studies (SPS) has cancelled the provisional offer of admission of thirteen candidates in the Political Science Department, as it identified a technical error in the 2011/2012 admission exercise. In a letter signed by the Secretary of the SPS, Malam Mijinyawa Sabo, the affected candidates have been urged to report to him for further details. In a letter signed by the Dean, SPS, Dr. Sadiq Isah Radda, the students were directed to update their registration based on the current rates plus 50% of the rate as penalty. The competition, which took place on July 24, 2012 in Lagos, saw the SIFE BUK receive N250,000 for displaying the best environmental sustainability project of supporting the local communities to eradicate malaria, combat desertification and create jobs for disadvantaged people through the cultivation and manipulation of the Neem tree, which grows in abundance in the northern region. The FHN CEO, Constantine Labi Ogunbiyi, said he was inspired by the BUK SIFE s creativity and congratulated the team leader, Nasir Yahaya, Nana Hauwa Sa idu, Muftahu Kabir, Olayemi Achiever, Oarue Itsewa Esioze, Samuel Abiola, and the Faculty Advisor, Dr. Mukhtar Halliru, for their outstanding victory. The CEO added that at FHN, two of the core pillars of our CSR programme are environmental impact and poverty alleviation, and we are pleased to support SIFE in identifying opportunities to further these objectives. I commend Bayero University members for their hard work and dedication to issues of relevance to our nation for winning the FHN Award and finishing second in the Final National Competition.

Bello P.R.O II IIIBF 2nd Seminar Held On 26 th July, 2012 The second (2 nd ) seminar of the newly established International Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance was held on 26 th July, The paper titled, Attainment of Maqasid Al Sahri ah through BBA Home Financing: A critical Appraisal was presented by Muhammad Ibrahim Abdullahi from Economics Department.

10 10 The acronym used in the paper BBA refers to Bay Bithamanin Ajil, which is an Islamic mode of home financing most widely practiced by Islamic banks, especially in the South-Eastern part of the world. It is an Islamic alternative to the conventional mortgage loan. BBA literacy means deferred payment sale where the payment of the price of an object of sale is deferred and payable at a certain particular time in future. The paper argues that while some scholars see BBA home financing as a means of improving the welfare of Muslims and Muslims alike, others perceive it as detrimental to clients/customers in particular and society in general. The Paper explored the theory and practice of BBA home financing contract, and assessed its welfare effects on the Muslim society. The paper equally cited relevant theoretical and jurisprudential issues and evidence from both the literature and Islamic sources of the Shari ah. The paper concluded that the form of BBA contract is Shari ah compatible; however, some practices of BBA home financing contracts adversely affect the attainment of Maqasid Shari ah. It therefore recommended among others possessing an object of sale (the home) by the banks before it enters into contract, the use of Istisna contract in case of unconstructed homes and that Islamic banks should review their profits charges benchmark and integrate charitable institutions to ease the burden on customers.
