3 و" 3 بسم رلاهللا The Battle of Hunayn \ غزوة حنين in the year eight of the Hejrah\ الهجرة after the Victory over مكة Makkah\ حنينHunayn Al Haarethee\ الحارثي the late professore of the Islamic Heritage at the University of Ummu Al Quraa\ جامعة أم القرى in Makkah Al Mukarramah\ المكرمة,مكة on page sixty nine said: The word Hunayn\ حنين comes from Hanaan\ حنان which means Mercy Compassion and is named after the man called Hunayn Ben Qaaneyah ben Mahlaa-eel\ حنين بن قانية بن مهالئيل of the Araba tribe of Al Amaaleeq\.العماليق Hunayn\ حنين is a waadee \ وادي /valley of the واديwaadees /valleys of Makkah Al مكة المكرمةMukarramah twenty six kilometers to its north/east. End quote.. وادي حنين \ Hunayn is the name of a water spring in the valley of حنينHunayn Then it devoloped into a settlement and to a district of Makkah Al المكرمةMukarramh.مكة Today this district is called Al,الشرائع Sharaa-e and it is located on the expressway between the City and.الطائف Taa-ef\ Al I went to the main masjed in Al Sharaa-e الشرائع and asked the exact location of the Battle of حنينHunayn.غزوة I was told : It was not in the location of the town but in the mountains of أوطاسAwtaas that can bee seen at the horizon. Al Balaadee\ البالدي volume one page one hundred forty four of his Mu jamu Ma aaleme Al Hejaaz\ معالم الحجاز معجم said: "والنصوص صريحة على أن المعركة لم تنشب بأوطاس وإنما إنهزمت إليها هوازن حتى أوقع بهم فيها كما انهزمت ثقيف إلى الطائف فتحصنت فيه." 4 4 غزوة حنينHunayn The Battle of.الشرائع \ Sharaa-e called today Al حنينHunayn took place in غزوة حنينHunayn Tha Battle of Ebnu إبن إسحاقEs-haaq said: When the tribe of هوازنHawaazen heard how هللاAllaah had given the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam victory over,مكةmakkah Maalek ben Awf Al Nasree \ مالك بن عوف النصري collected together the two tribes of هوازنHawaazen and..ثقيفthaqeef There assembled to him also all the tribes of Thaqeef\ ثقيف and all the tribes of Nasr. بني هالل \ Helaal and a few men from Banee سعد بن بكر Bakr\ and Sa d ben,جشمjusham and نصر \.قيس عيالنAylaan There were no others present from Qays Of,هوازنHawaazen كعبKa b and كالبKelaab kept away and no one of any aimportance from them was present. (Not a commander and ignorant of warfare). Do you think that anything will turn back a man that runs away? If all goes well nothing will help but sword and spear, if it goes ill you will be disgraced with your family and property. Then he said:?كالبkelaab and كعبKa b What happened to They said: Not a single one of them came. He said: Bravery and force are not here. Were it a day of lofty deeds كعبKa b and كالبKelaab would not have stayed away. I wish that you had done what كعبKa b and كالبKelaab have done. What clans have you got here? They said:.عوف بن عامرAamer and Awf ben عمرو بن عامرAamer Am ben He said: Those are the sprigs of عامرAamer can do nothing either way. O!مالكMaalek You have done no good, by sending forward the main body, the mainbody of,هوازنhawaazen including their women and chuildren to meet the enemy. Send them up to the high and inaccessible part of their land and meet the enemy with your cavalry. If all goes well those behind can join you, and if the battle goes against you, you will have saved your families and livestock. He said: By وهللاAllaah I will not do that! You are an old man. By وهللاAllaah you will either obey me, O,هوازنHawaazen ot I will lean on my sword until it comes out from my back. He could not bear Durayd ben Al دريد بن الصمةSemmah having any credity in the matter. They said: We will obey you. Then مالكMaalek said to the people: When you see the enemy break the sheath of your swords and charge them all of you at the same time.

6 6 The angels dislocate their shoulders and elbows Ebnu Es-haaq\ إبن إسحاق said: أمية بن عبد هللا بن عوف بن عمرو بن Umayyah ben Abdu Allaahe ben Awf ben Amr ben Uthmaan sent out spies to bring him مالك بن عوفAwf informed me that he was told that Maalek ben عثمان \ news of the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam and his companions. Thes espies came back to him with their shoulders and elbows dislocated. He said: Woe to you! What happened to you? They said: We saw white men on piebold horses and immediately they did to us what you see. And by!وهللاallaah Even that did not turn مالكMaalek back from the course he intended. When the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam heard about them, he sent Abdu Allaahe ben Abee Hadrad Al عبد هللا بن أبي حدرد األسلميAslamee to them and ordered him to go among them and stay with them until hr learned all about them, and then bring him back the news. Abdu Allaahe ben Abee Hadrad Al عبد هللا بن أبي حدرد األسلميAslamee went and stayed with them until he lrarned that they had decided to fight the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe.هوازن Hawaazen\ Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam and the dispositions of Then he came back to the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam and gave him the news. Then Umar ben Al Khattaab \ عمر بن الخطاب said: Ebnu إبن حدردHadraad is a liar. Ebnu إبن حدردHadraad said: If you call me a liar O عمرUmar, you have called before for a long time the truth a lie! You had called a man who is better than me (The Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam) a liar عمرUmar said: O Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam do you hear what ebnu إبن حدردHadrad is saying? The Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam said: "Qad kunta daallan fa hadaaka Allaahu yaa Umaru!" The Hadeeth means:.عمرumar guided you O هللا You were lost and Allaah "قد كنت ضاال فهداك هللا يا عمر."

7 7 صفوان \ Safwaan Borrowing the weapons of When the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam decided to go out against,هوازنhawaazen he was told that Safwaan ben صفوان بن أميةUmayyah had some body armour, shields and weapons. The Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam sent for him, while he was still a Polytheist and said to him: "يا أبا أمية أعرنا سالحك هذا نلقي فيه عدونا غدا." "Yaa Abaa Umayyah, a ernaa selaahaka haathaa nalqee feehe aduwwanaa ghadan". The Hadeeth means: O Abaa أميةUmayyah!أبا Lend us your weapons so that we fight our enemy tomorrow. Safwaan\ صفوان said: Are you demanding them by force? The Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam said: "Bal aareyatun wa madmoonatun hattaa nu-addeehaa elayka". The Hadeeth means: No, they are a loan and a trust until we return them to you. He said: In that case there is no objection. "بل عارية مضمونة حتى نؤديها إليك." He loaned the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam one hundred body armour with sufficient arms to go with them. The Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam asked Safwaan so. to transport them and he did صفوان \ Then the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam marched with two thousand men from Makkah Al Mukarramah\ مكة المكرمة and the ten thousand men of his companions who came with him from Al Madeenah Al Munawwarah\ المنورة.المدينة They were twelve thousand men alltogether. The Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam put Attaab ben عتاب بن أسيد بن أبي العيص بن أمية بن عبد Aseed ben Abee Ays ben Umayyah ben Abdu Shams and then went out for the Battle of مكة المكرمة \ Mukarramah in charge of Makkah Al شمس \.غزوة هوازن Hawaazen\

8 8 Thaatu Anwaat ذات أنواط \ Ebnu إبن إسحاقEs-haaq said: سنان بن أبي from Senaan ben Abee Senaan Al Du-alee إبن شهاب الزهري Zuhree\ Ebnu Shehaab Al الحارث told me that Al Haareth ben Maalek أبي واقد الليثي Laythee\ from Abee Waaqed Al سنان الدؤلي \ said: بن مالك We went forth with the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam to حنينHunayn fresh from paganism. The Polytheist قريشQuraysh and other pagan Arabs had a great green tree called Thaatu أنواطAnwaat ذات to which they used to come every year and hang their weapons on it and sacrifice beside it and evote themselves to it for a day. As we were going with the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam we saw a great Lot /السدرةgreen Sedrah tree and we called out to the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam from the sides of the way: O Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam! Make for us a! ذات أنواط \ Anwaat as they have a Thaatu ذات أنواط \ Anwaat Thaatu The Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam said: "أهلل أكبر! قلتم والذي نفس دمحم بيده كما قال قوم موسى لموسى: " ق و م ت ج ه ل ون إ ن ك م اج ع ل ل ن ا إ ل ه ا ك م ا ل ه م آ ل ه ة ق ال ". إنها السنن. لتركبن سنن من كان قبلكم." "Allahu Akbaru! Qultum, wa Allathee nafsu Muhammaden be Yadehe, kamaa qaala qawmu Moosaa le Moosaa: "Ej al llanaa elaahan kamaa lahum aalehatun qaala ennakum qawmun tajhaloona". Ennahaa al ssunanu. La tarkabunna sunana man kaana qablakum." The Hadeeth means: Allaahu أكبرAkbar!أهلل By Him Who holds the life of دمحمMuhammad in His Hand! You have said what the people of موسىMoosaa said to :موسىMoosaa O!موسىMoosaa Make for us a god as they have gods! موسىMoosaa said to them: سورة You are an ignorant people! (This is Aayah one hundred thirty eight of Sooraty Al A raaf.(األعراف You would follow the customs of those who were before you (The Christians and the Jews as in another narration of the same Hadeeth). End of the Hadeeth.

This water spring was named Aynu زبيدةZubaydah The /عين Water Spring od زبيدةZubaydah. حنينHunayn has developed into a small town and today it is called Al الشرائع Sharaa-e which is practically a suburb of Makkah Al مكة المكرمةMukarramah served by the its taxis, as I have used them) we came down through a واديwaadee of the waadees of Tehaamah\ تهامة wide and sloping. We were descending gradually in the morning twilight. The enemy had got there before us and had hidden themselves in its bypaths and side tracks and narrow places. They had collected and were fully prepared. By,وهللاAllaah we were terrified when, as we were coming down, the squadrons attacked us as one man. The Muslems broke and fled none heeding the other. The Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam withdrew to the right and said: "أين أيها الناس هلم إلي! أنا رسول هللا أنا دمحم بن عبد هللا." "Ayna ayyuhaa al nnaasu? Halumma elayya! Anaa Rasoolu Allaahe, anaa Muhammad ben Abdu Allaahe!". The Hadeeth means: O people! Come to me! I am the Messenger of Allaah\!هللا I am Muhammad ben Abdu Allaahe.دمحم بن عبد هللا And for nothing did the camels bump one into the other. The men ran away except that a number of the المهاجرينMuhaajereen and Al األنصارAnsaar and men of his أهل بيتهfamily stood firm with the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam.

Ebnu إبن إسحاقEs-haaq said: الزهري Al Zuhree The victory after the flight كثير بن العباس \ from Katheer ben Al Abbaas Abdu Al العباس بن عبد المطلبMuttaleb told me: \ from his father Al Abbaas ben ني لمع رسول هللا هللاىلص آخذ بحكمة بغلته البيضاء قد شجرتها بها " قال: "وكنت امرأ جسيما شديد الصوت" قال: "ورسول هللا يقول حين رأى ما رأى من الناس: "أين أيها الناس " فلم أر الناس يلوون على شيئ فقال: "يا عباس أصرخ يا معشر األنصار: يا معشر أصحاب السمرة." قال: "فأجابوا: "لبيك لبيك!" قال: فيذهب الرجل ليثني بعيره فال يقدر على ذلك فيأخذ درعه فيقذفها في عنقه ويأخذ سيفه وترسه ويقتحم عن بعيره ويخلي سبيله فيؤم الصوت حتى ينتهي إلى رسول هللا صلى اله عليه وسلم حتى إذا اجتمع إليه منهم مائة استقبلوا الناس, فاقتتلوا وكانت الدعوى أول ما كانت: يا لألنصار. ثم خلصت أخيرا: يا للخزرج. وكانوا صبرا عند الحرب فأشرف رسول هللا هللاىلص في ركائبه. فنظر إلى مجتلد القوم وهم يجتلدون فقال: "اآلن حمي الوطيس."

And not one of them paid heed and he said: O يا عباسAbbaas! Cry loudly: O Ansaar\!األنصار O comrades of the Samurah The /السمرةtree Acacia tree (These are the men that pledged loyalty to the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam under the tree of the specie Acacia /السمرةSamurah during the Peace Traety of Al Hudaybeyah\ هدنة الحديبية in the year six of the Hejrah\ الهجرة and are..(سورة الفتح Fathe\ mentioned in the Aayah eighteen of Sooratu Al; They answered:!لبيكlabbayka!لبيكlabbayka Here we are! We obey! A man would try to rurn his mount and could not do it! He would take his armour and put it on his neck and take his sword and shield and get off his mount and let it go its way and make for the voice until he comes to the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam. Finally a hundred men were gathered by him Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam and they went forward and fought. At first the cry was: Yaa lal Ansaare\ لألنصار!يا meaning: To me O Ansaar\!األنصار and finally: Yaa Lal Khazraj\ للخزرج!يا meaning: To me O Al Khazraj\ الخزرج (Al Aws\ األوس and Al الخزرجKhazraj combined were called Al.( الخزرجKhazraj They were steadfst in the fight and braves. The Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam in his stirrups observed them fighting the enemy and said: The battle has become hot now. 14 14 She said: Yes, I ransom you with my father and mother O Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam! Kill those who run away from you as you kill those who fight you, for they are worthy of death! The Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam said: "Aw yakfehe Allaahu yaa Ummu Sulaym?" The Hadeeth means:? أم سليمSulaym will save me from killing them O Ummu هللاAllaah Or Ummu أم سليمSulaym had a knife with her and Aboo أبو طلحةTalhah said to her:? أم سليمSulaym Why are you carrying a knife O Ummu She replied: I took this knife so that if a Polytheist came near me I could rip him up with it! 17 17 One of the men of Makkah\ مكة passed by and took his belongings, and when the fighting was over and we had finished with the enemy the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam said: "Man qatala qateelan fa lahu salabuhu". The Hadeeth means: Anyone who had killed a foe could have his spoil. (That includes his horse, weapons and other belongings) "من قتل قتيال فله سلبه." I said: O Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam by وهللاAllaah I had killed a man who had worthy spoils and I had been occupied with the fighting at the time and I do not know who took his spoils. A man from مكةMakkah said: He has spoken the truth O Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aale Wa Sallam I took the spoil of that man, so pay him to his satisfaction on my behalf from his spoil. Fa ennahu kaana yubghedu Qurayshan!". "أبعده هللا! فإنه كان يبغض قريشا!"

21 21 أبو عامر األشعري \ Ash aree The killing of Aboo Aamer Al Ebnu إبن إسحاقEs-haaq said: The Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam sent Aboo. أوطاسAwtaas on the track of those who had gone towards أبو عامر األشعريAsh aree Aamer Al He overtook some of them and they fought him. This way he killed nine of them and only the tenth remained. The tenth man charged against Aboo أبوعامرAamer and Aboo أبوعامرAamer charged against him calling him to Islaam and saying: O Allaah هللا bear witness! The man said: O Allaah هللا! Do not bear witness. When the man said that Aboo أبوعامرAamer did not kill him and the man run away. 22 22 بني رئاب \ Re-aab Banee Banee بني نصرNasr killed a number of men from Banee بني رئابRe-aab. It is alledged that Abdu Allaahe ben هللا بن قيسQays,عبد the one called Ebnu Al األعوراءA waraa-u إبن of Banee Wahb ben بني وهب بن رئابRe-aab said: O Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam the Banee Re-aab have perished! They allege that the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam said: "Allaahumma ajbur museebatahum". The Hadeeth means: O Allaah هللا! Make good their losses! مالك بن عوف Awf\ The tribe of Maalek ben "أللهم أجبر مصيبتهم." After the defeat, Maalek ben Awf\ مالك بن عوف came out accompanied by men of his tribe on horses and stopped at a pass on the way and said to his companions: Wait untill the weaker ones pass and those in the rear had caught up. They did so. Ebnu إبن هشامHeshaam said: The cavalry appeared while مالكMaalek and his companions were at the pass. He said to his companions: What do you see? بني سليمSulaym Banee They said: We see horsemen that have placed their long spears between the ears of their horses. He said These are Banee بني سليمSulaym and no harm will come to you from them. When they came closer they marched in the middle of the valley. Then other horsmen appeared behind them and following them. الخزرجKhazraj and Al األوسAws Al مالكMaalek said to his companions: What do you see now? They said: We see men without any particular sign to recognize them, carrying their spears on their sides.

23 23 He said: Those are Al األوسAws and Al الخزرجKhazraj and no harm will com to you from them..بني سليمSulaym When they came at the base of the pass they took the way of Banee الزبير بن العوامAwwaamu Al Zzubayru ben Al Then a horseman appeared and مالكMaalek said to his companions: What do you see now? They said: We see a single horseman with his spear on his shoulder with a red turban on his head. He said: That is Al Zzubayru ben Al الزبير بن العوامAwwaamu and by Al Llaata \ الالت and Al Uzzaa firm. he will fight you. Stay العزى When Al الزبيرZzubayru came at the base of the Pass, he saw the men and came to them and fought them untill he removed them from that spot. "En qadartum alaa Bejaaden, rajulun men Banee Sa d ben Bakr, falaa yafletannakum". The Hadeeth means: If you get hold of,بجادbejaad a man from Banee Sa d ben يعد بن بكرBakr,بني do not let him escape you. This man had done great wrong. When the Muslems took him they led him away with his family and with him Al Shaymaa-u bentu Al Haareth ben Abdu Al الشيماء بنت الحارث بن عبد العزىUzzaa the foster sister of the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam. They treated her roughly as they brought her along. She said to the Muslems: "تعلموا وهللا إني ألخت صاحبكم من الرضاعة."
