This evolution includes all aspects of one's being, from bodily health to self-realization. Yoga means union - the union of body with consciousness and consciousness with the soul. Yoga cultivates the ways of maintaining a balanced attitude in day-to-day life and endows skill in the performance of one's actions." 3 News from IYAC/Les Nouvelles de l'acyi, November, 2011 Guruji teaching at China India summit (photo Guruji at China/India Summit) by Philip Lee Dramatic movie-like music blares in the background, as the announcer enthusiastically announces, "Guruji is arriving any minute!!" in Mandarin and then English. I am among over 1300 people, mostly Asian faces in an ocean of Yoga mats and practitioners. Everybody once again turns towards the entrance of the sports gymnasium 3 of 16 11/29/11 9:35 AM
and this time he really is here. Hordes of people create a corridor for the highly anticipated Mr. Iyengar as he travels purposefully towards the platform in the center of the yoga hall. Observing Guruji live, he appears sage-like as he salutes the crowd in Namaste, his body and certainly his spirit give little indication of his 93 years of existence. It has taken me a long distant flight, a train ride, and three attempts to obtain a travel visa to be in Guangzhou, China. For several weeks, it seemed as if my opportunity of a lifetime would not happen. However, here I am among the most elite Iyengar yoga practitioners. I had watched DVDs of Mr. Iyengar's previous workshops; his top students' high performance of asanas guided by his strict corrections and instructions, and I am prepared to be pushed to a whole new level of yoga over the next three days. During the opening ceremonies of the China summit, Mr. Iyengar was cited as the most notable Guru to visit modern China, the last being Bodhidharma in the 5th/6th century. Records show that Bodhidharma travelled from India and introduced Shaolin monks to a form of yoga to strengthen their bodies for meditation. The monks integrated his concepts into Shaolin Kung Fu. For the Chinese, the yoga summit was a cultural exchange between China and India. Guruji spoke of the virtues of yoga and explained the difference between action and motion. He told how he adapted his methods when teaching yoga to the military and how he envisions yoga will change to suit the cultural needs of China, possibly incorporating Tai Chi. Guruji began teaching from the ground up, gearing towards beginners. Emphasizing the toes, he worked up the ankles, through the hamstrings, to the crown of the head. He made analogies with the centre stem and edges of leaves, explaining how our consciousness should extend equally from the plum line outwards when performing asanas. He told us to be aware of our inner and outer skin, so no parts of the body are "hard". He explained how as human beings we are like curvy lines and liable to ignorance, and how yoga could help us straighten the line. I looked around and saw two distinct types of audience; those who latched onto every word that Guruji spoke, and those who perhaps expected more exercise. I saw distracted girls texting on their mobile phones and taking pictures of Guruji on the large TV screens while other people napped on their yoga mats. I felt the teaching was deeper than most people expected. We didn't do a marathon of concentrated asanas; the overall focus was on inner intent rather than the finer details of individual poses. Mr. Iyengar explained the qualities that we should be aware of when practicing yoga. How we should aspire to cosmic rather than cosmetic beauty and ultimately strive to connect with the cosmic truth. 4 of 16 11/29/11 9:35 AM
I saw a sometimes harsh but compassionate Guruji. I saw senior Iyengar yoga teachers being treated like superstars. I saw the hordes relentlessly snapping photos of tired teachers. I saw organizers making a human fence to block the crowds from reaching Guruji. I saw tears from Guruji's onstage translator as he received his parting gift from Mr. Iyengar. We, over 1300 of us, were affected by Guruji, by his wisdom, or simply by his electrifying presence. Back row: Rina P. 6 Shirley Daventry French greets 80 with a smile. Photo by Don Lowen By Leslie Hogya Shirley Daventry French celebrated her Eightieth Birthday much of this past summer and continuing now into the fall! She and Derek celebrated many of these events together, as they were both born in On July 31, a gathering was held at their home, where the family hosted a large garden party. Friends and family gathered from across North America for a wonderful afternoon. Two eagles graced the event when they sat in a tree overlooking our festivities. At the August Footsteps of Patanjali retreat on Salt Spring Island, where the Victoria group has held retreats for over 25 years, the Salt Spring community surprised her one night with a cake, and singing. On September 10, the Iyengar Yoga Centre held a celebration in a magnificent private home. It was a magical evening with great food, and fellowship while the moon rose outside the windows over the Straits of Georgia. Greg Sly played the welcoming trumpet, Jane Monroe read one of her poems and Glenda Balkan Champagne entertained us with her glorious operatic voice. Gary Wong hosted. We baked eight cakes, one per decade to mark this special occasion. A lovely letter from Lynne Bowsher President of IYAC/ ACYI was read. 6 of 16 11/29/11 9:35 AM
Ann Kilbertus placing candles on one of eight cakes for Shirley's 80th. Shortly after, Shirley and Derek left for three weeks of relaxation in Europe. On their return, it was nearly Thanksgiving weekend, and the date of Shirley's actual birthday. Friday before that weekend, a letter from Guruji arrived in her honour. In the enclosed note to me he said: "It is heartening to note that Shirley and Derek are celebrating their 80th birthday this year. Both of them are such good people, that it is very hard to find words in expressing gratitude to them. Yet here is a small greeting from me to them. Affectionately, B.K.S. Iyengar." In the letter to Shirley he pointed out that for Indians, 80 years is very auspicious, as you have witnessed 1000 full moons. Shirley continues to inspire and guide many across Canada with her skilled yoga teaching, her clear seeing and sharp wit and wisdom. Shirley all of us wish you many more birthday cakes, and full moons. Namaste, Leslie Hogya Geetaji's Asana Class Primarily from the class given on Friday, December 5, 2008 Pune, India. 10 Appreciation for Good "Guidelines" by Barbara Young I was on the periphery of IYAC/ACYI during my first years of teaching Iyengar yoga, renewing my membership annually (with some grumbling about the cost), participating in assessment from time to time as a candidate or volunteer student, and occasionally attending an AGM. The IYAC/ACYI "Procedures and Guidelines for Assessment, Certification and Teacher Training" used to arrive in paper form. I would quickly file it in a binder, with scarcely a glance (and some grumbling about how un-yogic it seemed, to have so many rules for what was purportedly a spiritual practice). In recent years, I've become more involved in IYAC/ACYI. I'm now on the committee responsible for the guidelines document. I've seen how organic it is, changing and adapting as our organization evolves. A new edition has just been completed. Corrine Lowen and Marlene Miller are the other committee members. Marlene is the voice of reason and experience, with a remarkable organizational memory. Corrine has done an incredible job coordinating this round of major updates. She spent countless volunteer hours overseeing the update and communicating with all and sundry in an effort to get it right. Our next project for the "Guidelines" is a possible simple language review so it is easier to read, and a possible content reorganization so information is easier to find. If you see errors in this edition or have suggestions for the next, please let me know. Below is a list of key changes. It is not exhaustive. The updated document is posted on the members' page of our website, so please discard all previous versions and refer to this one. If you prefer a paper copy, you can print it out from there. * Contact Information: Contact information has changed for key people, including the RIMYI Registrar. There is no longer an Assessment Registrar. Instead, there's a new Assessment and Certification Administrative Assistant. * Qualifications: These have been updated for training teachers and teachers of therapeutic yoga. * Introductory I Assessment: Forms have been updated, and the complete package for Introductory I assessment is now in Appendix G. Lisa Towson is the new Chair of Introductory I assessment. * Introductory II Candidate Prerequisites and Recommending Letters: Corrections have been made. * Assessment Applications: Changes have been made regarding assessment scheduling and acceptance of assessment registration packages. Geographic proximity is now a factor considered when placing candidates in an assessment. To find out where to send your assessment application, see p. 11. * Pranayama: Pranayama will now be assessed from Intro II onward in different ways for different levels of certification. * Host Community Guidelines: These have been updated. If you're not sure how to access the member's page (and therefore the document), contact me, at b-young@rogers.com, or your regional rep. We 10 of 16 11/29/11 9:35 AM
will wait until the next edition to produce a new French-language version of the document. Thanks et merci. Interested in IYAC/ACYI Stories and Images? Below: Ingelise Nehrlan, Linda Benn, Ann Kilbertus, Marilyn Prange by Barbara Young If you're interested in contributing to IYAC/ACYI and keeping its history alive and vibrant, we have the karma yoga opportunity for you! The association is looking for someone to take the helm of the IYAC/ACYI Archives. There's a wealth of material out there in boxes and on computers, and we're beginning to gather it together. Claudia MacDonald has recently begun to transfer archival slides to DVD for the archives, and she has offered to continue. The association needs someone to work with Claudia and take the lead on documenting and archiving the wonderful photos, teachings and stories that make up the fabric of our past. Ann Kilbertus and Barbara Young, responsible for Documentation and Archives respectively, have taken on other responsibilities for the association, but they will be glad to help out during the transition. It's a fascinating way to contribute to IYAC/ACYI. Please let us know if you're interested in joining the Archives team. b-young@rogers.com 11 of 16 11/29/11 9:35 AM
The Difference between Action and Motion by Pamela Nelson Mr. Iyengar says, "Yoga is the science of action, not the science of motion." At first glance you might say, is action and motion not the same thing? At least this is what I thought. But upon reflection I came to understand this sentence. An action is an act that one consciously wills, either physical or mental. Motion on the other hand is any movement or change in position or place that is not necessarily done consciously. Mr. Iyengar says, "Action is movement with intelligence." We can create all sorts of motions every day, like the subconscious lifting of our hands to our mouths to eat something in front of us and then not remembering eating it; the movement of the breath, even when we are not paying attention to it. Action, on the other hand, requires us to consciously put awareness into the movement. We are aware we are putting something into our mouths and conscious of the texture and taste. We are paying attention to the breath, how it is moving in our bodies and actively participating in its movement through the practice of Pranayama. Mr. Iyengar says, "To live in the moment and not in the movement of moment." This is Yoga! The statement in Light on Pranayama that says, "knowledge without action and action without knowledge do not help man. They must be intermingled," begins to make more sense. If we have knowledge, but don't put it into action, it is fruitless and if we have action with no knowledge of why, it is fruitless. Mr. Iyengar says - "Take action, no matter how small." Mr. Iyengar did not become the yoga master he is overnight! He has dedicated more than 75 years to his yoga practice. It is only through our many small actions that we can perceive that larger ones may happen. Lord Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita, "Yoga is skillfulness in action." As Mr. Iyengar explains in Light on Astanga Yoga, skilful action is an action that is performed with skilful intelligence. He says every action yields fruit, yet it is the selfish motive behind the action that we must avoid. He says that one should not expect or accept any reward or fruit of his action. When this is done the action already ends with fruits! That does not mean we are to do an action without aim, but without ambition for the self. To end with a quote from Ernest Hemingway, "Never mistake motion for 12 of 16 11/29/11 9:35 AM
action." We too often can have the appearance of action, when really we are "just going through the motions," I hope you can bring more action to your every day and your every movement... no matter how small. Timer by Dhana Musil I am preparing for my level two Iyengar yoga examination. I haven't been able to get past a nine-minute holding of sirsasana. I am certain I crumble prematurely because I don't have a proper timer. After a morning of scouring Tokyo, I find it. It has all the features I need plus a magnet to stick it on the side of the fridge. Dhana Musil It's Mothers Day, so I dial my home number and hope my mother answers from across the ocean. I haven't seen her in almost two years. I notice a white, vinyl purse lying on the floor of the phone booth. I absentmindedly flip open the cracked plastic wallet with one hand. It contains the equivalent of thirty dollars and an old train ticket. Asteya comes to mind. I look up to see a woman running towards me. In expletives, she's accusing me of stealing her bag at the department store and hiding in this telephone booth. I try to reason with her, but she lunges at me and rips off my backpack. She throws it to the ground, stands on it, and dials 110. A crowd has formed around us. It doesn't help that today I lam wearing my baseball cap and army surplus pants. The crowd probably sees me as some kind of "Unabomber" girl. I hear sirens approach from the south. I couldn't believe they sent a cruiser with flashing lights for this. During the ten minute ride to the police station I breathe deeply, drawing on pranayama breathing techniques to stay calm and centered and take refuge in satya. The three officers assigned to my case ask to inspect the contents of my bag. They find a few cosmetics, notebooks and a partially eaten sushi triangle. The officer in charge asks me about the small wrapped package. "Sore wa taima desu." That's a timer. "Taima?" he repeats, in an alarmed tone. "Hai, so desu." Yes, that's right. 13 of 16 11/29/11 9:35 AM
The gentle expression on his face transforms into a dry frown and he walks out of the room. He returns with his superior. Are they equating my timer with an explosive device? The idea of anyone thinking of me as violent is ridiculous. Ahimsa is the cornerstone of yoga and I do my best to live by this teaching. The superior arrives. "Akete mo ii desu ka?" Is it alright if I unwrap this? "Hai Douzo" Sure, go ahead. He unwraps the timer and they speak amongst themselves. Faces redden. Finally, they explain that "taima" is Japanese slang for "marijuana." Do they think I would have been this calm if I had an ounce of marijuana in my pack? For the first time since I arrived two hours ago it is implied that my accuser may be "slightly" off balance. The officers walk me to the front door, bow deeply and apologize profusely. I am free to go. By the time I get home it's close to six pm. After a light meal to settle my nerves, I set my timer to Seasonal Eating: Two Beet Recipes by Nancy Searing Beet Tzatziki Beet Tzatziki Ingredients: 1 Pound roasted beets 2 Cloves garlic 14 of 16 11/29/11 9:35 AM
1/2 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 2 Cups thick low-fat Greek style yogurt 1 Tablespoon finely chopped dill Method: Arrange beets in single layer in 13x9x2-inch baking dish; add 1 cup water. Cover; bake until beets are tender when pierced with knife, about 1 hour 10 minutes. Peel beets while warm. Grate the roasted beets on the large holes of a grater. Smash the garlic with the salt in a mortar and pestle. Add the lemon juice, and let stand for 10 minutes. Stir into the yogurt. Add black pepper to taste, and adjust salt. Stir in the beets and the dill. If you want a thinner consistency, more like a sauce, add more yogurt to taste. Beet and Feta Salad Roasted Beet Salad with Beet Greens and Feta (From Epicurious) Good cooks never discard the nutritious beet greens. Here, the greens are combined with roasted beets, capers and feta in a Greek-inspired salad. Ingredients: 6 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 1/2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon minced garlic 7 medium-large beets (about 3 inches in diameter) with greens 1 cup water 2 tablespoons chopped drained capers 3/4 cup crumbled feta cheese (about 3 ounces) Preparation: Preheat oven to 375 F. Whisk oil, vinegar and garlic in small bowl to blend. Season dressing generously with salt and pepper. Cut green tops off beets; reserve tops. Arrange beets in single layer in 13x9x2-inch baking dish; add 1 cup water. Cover; bake until beets are tender when pierced with knife, about 1 hour 10 minutes. Peel beets while warm. Cut beets in half and slice thinly. Transfer to large bowl. Mix in capers and 1/4 cup dressing. Season with salt and pepper. Cut stems off beet greens; discard stems. Wash greens. Transfer greens, with some water still clinging to leaves, to large pot. Stir over high heat until just wilted but still bright green, about 4 minutes. 15 of 16 11/29/11 9:35 AM
Drain greens; squeeze out excess moisture. Cool; chop coarsely. Transfer greens to medium bowl. Toss with enough dressing to coat. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Arrange beets in center of platter. Surround with greens; sprinkle with feta. Drizzle with any remaining dressing.
