Anjali (KHNA) 3 Hinduism the Scientific Religion DR. SUDHIRDAS KUMAR PRAYAGA Hinduism as a religion has developed and evolved over many millennia in India, originally called the Sanadhana Dharma. It probably is the oldest religion that is practiced continuously until now. The origin of Hinduism goes back to antiquity where no written records are available. Hinduism is not created by any one person or at any one particular time in history. India was also a melting pot of developments in mathematics, astrology, medicine, art, architecture, justice, etc. since time immemorial. Hinduism accepted these and incorporated many of these developments into itself as a way of life. In this article I like to introduce readers to the scientific strength of Hinduism, rather than blind faith and belief, with three examples. How Hinduism is in full agreement with our current understanding of scientific materialism and perception of reality. Extraordinary parallels can be found between modern understanding of physics, biology, and mathematics with ancient Hindu scripts. THE GOD EQUATION - MATHEMATICS India was the cradle of mathematics, which is echoed very well in its many Hindu texts. To name a few, it has developed the decimal number system now known as the Arabic numerals, introduced 0, established Pythagoras theorem probably 500 years before Pythagoras! The knowledge of infinity probably existed for over two millennia in India. An excellent example is from Isavasya Upanishad, written over 2000 years ago, about God and the universe to explain some of the basic concepts of Hinduism and the nature of reality. ॐ प र णमद प र णम दम प र णत प रनम उदच यत प र णस य प र णम द य प रनम एव व स स यत ഓ പ ര ണമധ ഹ പ ര ണമ ദ പ ര ണധ പ ര ണ ഉദ ച യത പ ര ണസ യ പ ര ണമ ദ യ പ ര ണ ഏവ അവശ ഷ യത om purnamadah purnamidam purnat purnamudacyate purnasya purnamaadaya purnameva vasisyate Purnam in Sanskrit (and Malayalam) has the meanings of complete or infinite. Thus, it says God is complete and infinite. The universe is also complete and infinite. The complete and infinite universe was created or arose from the complete and infinite God. When you take infinity out of infinity, what remains is infinity. The last line uses a mathematic equation to establish a concept, which I call the God equation. THE GOD PARTICLE - PHYSICS The modern cosmological understanding about the universe and the nature of reality seems to be in line with the ancient Hindu philosophical ideas on the origin of the universe and reality. It is the only religion in which the time scales correspond to those of the modern scientific cosmology. Its cycles run from our ordinary day and night to a day and night of Brahma, which is 8.64 billion years long. Many eminent scientists and thinkers like Albert Einstein, Max Planck, Henry Shrodinger, Niels Bohr, Julius Oppenheimer, Carl Sagan, etc. have made comparisons in awe about these close similarities. Our scientific understanding of the physical universe underwent a revolutionary change after the publication of Einstein s special theory of relativity (1905) and general theory of relativity (1915). The concepts of absolute space and absolute time had to be discarded in favor of a mind-boggling space-time fabric in which two events can never be said to be simultaneous. Other new concepts such as quantum mechanics, light is both a particle and a wave, energy and mass are interchangeable, how matter bends space and space directs how matter moves led to conclusion that reality is probabilistic and not deterministic. It says in Mahabharata that time is the seed of the universe. Hindus believe that nature is maya (illusion) or midhya (unreal), as the great sage Adi Sankaracharya ( AD) succinctly put it in his famous verse Brahma Satyam Jagat Mithya. ब रह म सत यम जगत म थ य ज व ब रह म व न अपरह ബ രഹ മ സത യ ജഗത മ ത യ ജ വ ബ രഹ മ വ ന ആപരഹ brahma satyam jagat mithya jeevo brahmaiva na aparah Thus, it says that Brahman or God alone is real; the universe is il-
4 Anjali (KHNA) lusory or unreal. Jiva or self is identical with Brahman. Physicists now demonstrate that the whole universe is pervaded or enveloped by what is called the Higgs field, without which the universe may not exist. Higgs field is carried by particles called Higgs Bosons (named after physicist Peter Higgs and Indian physicist Satyendra Nath Bose), the so-called God particles. It is believed to provide mass to all other subatomic particles and thus crucial to the formation of the physical universe that we know. The allegory God particle says it all, that there is no existence without these particles pervading the whole universe. A quote from Bhagavad Gita (7.7) says exactly this, that everything in the universe is strung on Brahman like jewels on the thread of a necklace. मय सर वम त प र त स त र मण गण ऎव മയ സര വമ ത പ ര ത സ ത ര മണ ഗണ ഏവ Mayi sarvamitham protham suthre manigana eva Stories from My Heart tories from My Heart is a collection of stories Sand essays that come right out of the author s heart. These are real life experiences that capture the fascinating details, challenges, drama and at times humor as well, while working through three different countries in three different continents in the world - India, England and USA. These are taken from the author s practice of Cardiology and Internal Medicine for the past 50 years. You can order your copy through or M. P. Ravindra Nathan, M.D. FACC, FACP, FRCP A quote from Isavasya Upanishad again will put this idea in perspective, which is the very fundamental tenet of Hinduism that God is present everywhere. इसव स यम इद सर व य त क च जगत य जगत ഈസവശ യ ഇദ സര വ യട ക ന ച ജഗത യ ജഗത isavasyam idam sarvam yatkinca jagatyam jagat Thus, it says that God is omnipresent and envelops everything that is animate or inanimate in the universe. This concept is also made very famous by the Beatles song within you and without you, written by George Harrison. THE GOD EVOLUTION BIOLOGY Evolution is the process of gradual or progressive change or development. Biological evolution is any change that occurs A Cardiologist s Reflections on the Gift of Life Authored by Dr M. P. Ravindra Nathan Edition: First across successive generations. Our current scientific understanding is that all life on earth originated by chemical synthesis and diverged over time. Charles Darwin, in late 19th century, put forward his evolution theory to scientifically explain a basis for generation of diversity of life on earth in his eminent work The Origin of Species. Hinduism is not only in line with such concepts, but provides many examples to support such evolutionary process in its many texts. One good example is the Desavathram of the Hindu God Vishnu. Each incarnation or avatar of Vishnu is evolved or progressed from the previous avatar. Thus the first avatar Matsya or fish is more primitive than the next avatar Kurma or turtle which is a reptile. The 3rd avatar Varaham or pig is a mammal, and so on with successive evolution. Another example is that which describes the evolution of universe and time. This is described in Surya Sidhanta and Vishnu Purana, in addition to other texts. This describes the Hindu philosophy that universe is eternal or perpetual, that there is no beginning, or end. With each cycle of Brahma the universe is created and destroyed. This concept is illustrated in the cosmic dance figures of Shiva, with a drum in the left hand indicating the sound of creation (the Ohm or big bang) and right hand with an arc of fire (of destruction). 6 6 Anjali (KHNA) Sri Narayana Gurudev s Daiva Dasakam. Sri Narayan Guru (ca ) needs no introduction to the Malayalees. In reality he has become a house hold name in the land of Kerala. He was not only a social reformer, but an ardent thinker, a philosopher, a gifted poet and an astute authority of Sanathana Dharma Scriptures, particularly the Upanishads. He was a proponent of the Advaitha Philosopy of Sankara Bhagavat Padar. Gurudev, a Brahmajnani, delved deep into the ocean of spirituality and experienced everlasting bliss. Based on the Sanathana Dharma tradition, the Jnana Gurudev acquired through ardent contemplations were transmitted through his compositions for our tasting and perusal. His various books are nothing but compassionate solicitation to trod the divine path for exquisite bliss. Guru Dev composed a number of magnificent poems infused with Vedanthic messages which one can incorporate in the Sadhana for self-realization. These include poems ranging from the single versed Ekasloki to the one hundred versed Athmopadesasathakam. The ten verses of Daiva Dasakam expounds the supreme truth in vibrant prayers to Iswara or Bhagavan. As in his other works, Guru Dev s exhortations of one religion, one cast and one god for all mankind is reflected in this composition. Truly a Universal prayer, Daiva Dasakam propitiate the eternal God almighty whose compassion is sought irrespective of religion, cast or creed. This is a humble lyrical translation of Daiva Dasakam intended for the non-malayalam speaking younger generation of Kerala origin. I am fully aware of the limitations in the translation as it will be difficult to convey the intended meaning and ramifications, especially coming from the pen of a God-realized saint as Sri Narayan Guru. I submit this at the feet of the Almighty and Gurudev and request their pardon for the mistakes. O Lord supreme, give us refuge always at Thy lotus feet And never let loose Thy divine hold on these hapless ones. And shower your compassion to cross this ocean of life O captain of the mighty ship, lead us to Thy lotus feet....1 By counting one by one with attention Till the last of all worldly scenes surpassed When nothing else is left for the eyes to see What remain is only your exalted vibrations....2 With no scarcity you fed and clothed us all, You protected us through time and space Fructified and fulfilled all our needs and more You alone is our gracious God supreme...3 Like the ocean with its mighty waves and storms Its immense depth and its limitless waters, Perceiving in silence both ignorance and splendor To immerse deep in Your adorable solace....4 You alone is the magnificent and only creator Innumerable are all your wonderful creations. O God Almighty, Thou alone is the Father of all The cause and effect of all magnificent creations....5 You alone is the nescience and its perpetrator You alone is the enjoyer of this mighty play You alone is the greatest masters of all You alone unveils the illusion and bestow salvation....6 You alone is Truth, Knowledge and Bliss You alone is present, past and future
Anjali (KHNA) 7 You alone is all that visualized and beyond You alone is all pronounced words and sounds....7 Thy divine feet encompass and fill all within And veil the space infinite beyond and within We praise you ceaselessly, O Mighty Lord Accept our humble salutations; Victory to you....8 Victory and glory to You O my Lord O compassionate to the downtrodden! Victory to Your perpetual splendor. O Merciful Lord, victory and glory to You....9 May we all be immersed in the ocean of Your heart Which abounds with love and compassion unlimited. May we drink the ambrosial nectar of eternal Bliss. 8 8 Anjali (KHNA) Acharya Ayur Gramam Palmistry Palmistry is another method of predicting future by reading the streaks of palm and suggesting atonements. This method is very much helpful to those who have no horoscope or unknown about birth time. Whenever we hear about the term Palmistry we recollect the village fortune-teller lady, Kakkathy s figure, with a hanging a cage on the hand with a parrot inside the cage. As the lady opens the cage, the trained parrot will come out and pick out one envelope from among the other envelopes kept in front of the cage. The Kakkathy lady opens the cover and take a colour picture out. In that picture there may be a scene from Hindu Puranas or a picture of a methological character or a God. After seeing the picture the lady examines the palm and predicts the fortune. Actually, this is not true palmistry. She can only guess the future, but not tell true things scientifically. In palmistry a person s future can be predicted without knowing his birth time or positions of the planets. There is no mathematical calculations on planets or horoscope in palmistry, but reading the streaks of Palm a Palmist can predict one s future. We can say that palm streaks are photocopy of one s future. Palmistry is the practice of foretelling the future by examining the lines and marks of the palm of the human hand. People in many parts of the world today practice palmistry. Many palmists use various physical and psychological clues in making predictions. The conditions of the hands and nails also indicates some characteristics. Such signs may help the palmist make accurate predictions. Some palmists use the form of the hand to describe an individual personality as part of the process of predicting the future. Palmistry is often thought of as the art of reading the lines in the hand. The lines tell only one part of the story that is etched into the hands. A skilled Palmist looks at palmar lines and ridges, the shape and length of each finger, the mounts and bumps on the hand as well as skin color, warts, cuts, blisters, scars and the subject s own unique calling card, the fingerprints. Recognition of the shape of the palm and the correspondences given to the mounds and fingers provides a grounding in the study of the map of the hand. Once this mapping is understood, it becomes much simpler to learn to read the hand by viewing the lines, bumps, wounds and other unique markings as an overlay on top of the map. JUPITER - The pointer fingter and the mound below it. MARS - The upper mound inside the life line. SATURN - The middle finger and the mound below it. VENUS - The lower mound inside the life line. APOLLO (sun) - The mound on the heel of the hand. MOON - The lower mound inside the life line. MERCURY - The little finger and the mound below it. DR. JAYANARAYANJI Trivandrum Chirognomy The study of hand shapes, including the size and shapes of the fingers and mounds. This section contains information about the four basic hand shapes. To learn about the map of the hands, visit the Meaning & Myth section. Chiromancy The study of the lines in the hands. This word is also often used to describe the entire study of palmistry. This section gives a basic overview of the three major lines found in the hand as well as commonly found vertical lines.. Dermatoglyphics The study of the skin ridges of the hand. In the section you will find an summary of the four basictypes of fingerprints. Meaning and myth The astrological map of the hand is key to palm reading. Without an understanding of the qualities that correspond to each part of the hand and each finger, the lines, dots, squares, cuts, hollows and bumps are meaningless. A star on the mound of Apollo has a very different meaning than a star on the mound of Mars. A person with a large thumb and a long, straight Jupiter finger will behave very differently than a person with a large thumb and a short, twisted Jupiter. The astrological map of the hand is the base upon which the highways and byways
Anjali (KHNA) 9 of the nervous system become etched. A firm grasp of the meanings and myths associated with each area is the basis for the study of palmistry. The mounds and fingers were named for the seven planets that were recognized by astronomers and astrologers at an earlier time in our history. Some modern palmists have added the outer planets, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, to the map. As these are not personalized planets, I prefer to work with the classic diagram. The image on this page illustrates the traditional layout of the hand. The links below each open to a page with more details.
10 Anjali (KHNA) Proposal for Heritage School Sadar namaskar. India has a great Heritage despite its vast geographical area, cultures, climatic conditions, lifestyles and conflicts. Of late, because of the greed of some of the selfish people, our Heritage and Environment are being damaged which has its impact on the change in climatic conditions resulting in El Nino. Against this back ground, a group of socially conscious and nature loving persons from different background under the patronage of Justice V.R Krishna Iyer, a former supreme court judge and a crusader of moral values and ethics, have come forward to establish a charitable trust to protect and preserve our great Heritage for the future generation. The trust has chosen Aranmula as its centre of activities. Aranmula Heritage Trust is the organization setup for the purpose. Aranmula is a village which is situated in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. The place, though is a remote village, has a tradition of great Heritage associated with it. On the religious side, Aranmula Parthasathy Temple is one of the oldest Krishna temple in the country. It is believed to be more than 2500 years old. It has unique construction with granite stone and wood as its base. The temple is one of the 108 Vishnu temples in the country which are revered by the devotees. The deity is believed to have been installed by Arjuna on his way to the heavenly abode. Nammalvar, one of the most revered saints of India had visited the Temple in his time over several centuries ago. On the spiritual side, Shri Vijayananda Gurudev, famously known as Kaviyoor Swamigal, who was a disciple of Chattambi Swamigal has been a spiritual guru to a generation in his time. He had established several schools in the area where Sanskrit is taught along with other subjects. The institutions gave emphasis on moral and ethical values to the students. On the ecology side, Aranmula is situated on the banks of River Pampa. The river has its tributaries running across over 100 villages in the area providing fertility and facilitating agricultural operations. The place can grow almost any crop from Paddy, Spices, Medicinal Plants, Vegetables to cash crops such as Rubber and Tea. It is unfortunate that real estate mafia has been making efforts to destroy the unique ecological balance and the local population has been resisting the destruction. Lord Ayyappa, as a child is believed to have been found on the banks of river Pampa. The river therefore is worshiped as Dakshina Ganga. The pilgrims visiting Sabarimala take a ritualistic dip in the river before and after visiting the Temple. On the cultural side, Aranmula VALLAMKALI( Snake Boat raise) is a cultural spectacle with its large number of Boats, colour full presentation and rhythmic songs sung by over 100 oarsmen in each boat. VALLAMKALI takes place in Pampa River on the last day of Onam Festival during August / September every year. On the performing arts, Aranmula is famous for PATAYANI, a martial art and Temple arts such as THEYYAM, KATHAKALI, KOOTHU etc. The world famous Aranmula KANNADY is a mirror made out of metal. These mirrors are made in a unique process and the knowhow is known to only one family in the world who lives in Aranmula. Aranmla also has unique Flora and Fauna. We therefore, consider that Aranmula is the most suited place to set up our Heritage programme. It is our plans to initiate action for protection of Heritage at various centres in India over a period of time. To begin with we are starting a Heritage School at Aranmula at an estimated cost of Rs 12 Crores. The intention is based on the principle of catch them young. Besides the academic subjects, the children will be inculcated with values as described in Chapter 5 of the Project Report. It is our intention to involve famous academicians to guide us in setting up the Heritage School as a worthy proposition. We enclose a copy of our project report as well as brochure detailing our plans and organization. We now seek your support financially as well as ideologically in making our endeavour a success. I would be extremely grateful if you give me an opportunity to meet you personally and submit a presentation on the proposal. I shall appreciate a line in reply. Yours Sincerely Kummanam Rajasekharan Chairman
