As we move into this next phase of our transition, Bill Ingersoll s gifts will lead to fresh insights. The collaborative model begun last year has proven to be fruitful and is one of Bill s strengths. His gifts and passion in this area will inspire us all to continue growing in new ways. God s plans are big and I am excitedly looking forward to where God is moving us next. Pastor Kristie Finley I m very eager for you all to meet Bill. Although I had previously only met him in passing, he immediately put me at ease when we met during his call process. His demeanor is charming, patient, and upbeat; the way he listened carefully during our conversation made me excited for how he will listen to you as we serve Christ together. I can t wait to see how enthusiastic he will be about this call after he has a chance to get to know so many more of you! Pastor Chip Hardwick Change can create feelings of uneasiness, but it can also be a fruitful time of recalibration. During this season of transition, God s provided us with the incredible gift of talented leaders, each with a unique voice that helps our community experience God in fresh ways. These past experiences make me excited for the gifts that Rev. Bill Ingersoll is going to bring! Through new initiatives, or a fresh approach to existing ideas, having a new Interim Head of Staff will provide great opportunities for us to love and care for our community. Serving communion has been difficult for some because of fear going up and down the chancel steps with a tray in your hand. To make it possible for everyone to serve, we are now distributing the communion trays from small tables just below the pulpit and the lectern. The pastors will still deliver the words of institution at the large communion table at the top of the chancel steps. Then, they will come down and hand out the elements to the servers. So, if you have been reluctant to sign up, we hope that you will find this a more comfortable and safe way to share in this important ministry. Communion is on the first Sunday of the month. Children s Choirs are Back! We invite all children age 4 through 8 th grade to join our Children s Choirs! We sing once a month in worship and on Christmas Eve, and we will present our annual musical on February 24. Rehearsals begin Tuesday, September 11. 4 Pastor Nominating Committee Update We are pleased to announce that on Monday, July 16, Session unanimously approved the MIF! The Ministry Information Form (MIF) is how we put in writing what we re looking for in a pastor. It lays out who we are as church, and describes the kind of leader we believe God is calling for us at this time. The MIF now moves to the Executive Presbyter, and the Commission on Ministry (COM) for approval. Once certified, it will be uploaded to the presbytery s Church Leadership Connection (CLC) website which advertises our vacancy. Pastors who feel called to the position will then submit their own Pastor Information Form (PIF) for consideration. PIFs that match our MIF will be reviewed by the PNC and we will identify our top candidates. We will also be looking for pastors who may not be actively seeking a new call, but who might be a good fit for First Pres. If you would like to nominate a candidate, please pass that information along to any of our committee members. We know that God is with us and will guide us to do his will. Elliott, John Gescheidle, Cindy Johnson, Barbara Schulz, David Strong, Diane Quinn (Co-Chair), Martha Zeeman Buildings & Grounds Memorial Garden You may have noticed that the new pathway in the Memorial Garden is well underway and the new plantings are being watered during these warm sunny days. We were able to begin interments again in mid-july and have already welcomed many people into this special spiritual place on our church campus. There are some additional benches coming and spiritual symbols being considered. Mary Robbins of Stonewood Design Group was responsible for working with the Buildings and Grounds church team. Mary shares below what inspired her design. Over the past 18 years I ve been designing a variety of gardens as a landscape architect. However, this project was more personal since I have a great deal of respect and admiration for the people at First Church. Spending many days simply sitting in the garden absorbing the sights, sounds and smells of the neighborhood, I envisioned what it would be like to spend time there whether it was to grieve, rest, relax or celebrate the incredible journey of the human spirit. At the end of the day, love, respect and admiration for all of these blessings of life were the true inspiration for this garden. We are very thankful for the work being done and the generosity of those who are making this possible. In addition to the Christian spiritual symbols being considered, we have railings to complete on the new Access Ramp and new benches to place. 5 Faith Formation Summer Book Club: The Best is Yet to Come! Many of us at First Pres are reading through the New Testament as part of the Summer Book Club: The New Testament. It s a schedule of reading approximately three chapters of the New Testament every day. By August 1, we ve made it through all of the Gospels and Acts, and the longest of the epistles: Romans, and 1 and 2 Corinthians. We ve had a chance to dig into Jesus life, death, and resurrection and then to reflect with the apostle Paul on their cosmic implications for us and the world. Now we re rounding the corner toward the last month, when we ll be digging into some of the shortest books in the Bible. On some days in August, we ll finish a whole book of the Bible in one day and on August 25, we ll even read three books in one day: 2 John, 3 John, and Jude! Don t worry each one is only one chapter long. If you are still on track with the schedule for the whole summer, that s awesome! You ll receive a special gift at the end of the summer to celebrate the joy of reading through the entire New Testament. Your persistence is inspiring. If you haven t been able to join in, it s not too late to start, especially in August when most of the books that are scheduled are covered in two or three days. You can join in at the beginning of any book and read it, and then go on to the next one. Although Hebrews and Revelation are a little challenging, the remainder of the books this month don t require much special background. This really is the best book club on the North Shore. Done in 60 Minutes: Freaky Fast Introductions to the Christian Basics PROBLEM #1: I need a sweeping overview of some basic matters of the Christian faith, like the Bible, or church history, or theology. PROBLEM #2: It s hard to find the time to dig into these topics in depth. PROBLEMS SOLVED: PROBLEM #3: I have a short attention span. 6 Update on Our Prayer Partner in Fairouzeh, Syria Pastor Chip Hardwick met with Yacoub Sabbagh via messenger on July 11, and Yacoub introduced Fairouzeh to Chip. A village near the city of Homs, Fairouzeh's population tripled after the start of the war 7 years ago to roughly 12,000. Some refugees from Homs have been able to return, dropping the population to around 10,000. However, many of the Syrians who escaped to Fairouzeh had their homes totally destroyed leaving little possibility of returning until the cessation of war. This is, understandably, a hot topic of discussion within the village. When will the war end? When can we go back home? The Fairouzeh community is almost all Christian of various denominations. Yacoub's church welcomes anyone who comes to worship, which is not true of all the churches in Fairouzeh nor elsewhere in Syria. Fairouzeh bustles with lots of activity due to the population influx. The village operates four full schools each morning. People displaced from other parts of Syria, like Homs, have opened shops and restaurants, and being accustomed to longer hours in the city, these merchants can keep their shops open later! The Adult Faith Formation committee looks forward to having others in the congregation meet Yacoub and to grow the bond between our congregations. In the meantime, Yacoub is asking for us to pray for a greater sense of community within his church. Attendees are from different parts of Syria, with different faith traditions, and different cultures. While the Fairouzeh church is committed to serve all, they fear that some come just to receive aid and not really to worship with their brothers and sisters in Christ. Discerning how and where to give aid is a major concern of the Fairouzeh church and primary focus for the elders. Please continue to pray for Yacoub, his family and his congregation. SAVE THE DATE! 7 We need Sunday School volunteers! Go deeper with your faith, while planting and nurturing the seeds of faith in our younger people! We are building our roster of Preschool 4 th Grade faith-building teachers and guides for the coming program year. Interested? Need more information? New Staff and Programs for the Upcoming School Year by Kristina Mills, Preschool Director I hope everyone has been enjoying the great weather we have been blessed with this summer. It is hard to believe that school is right around the corner! We have been working diligently over the summer to get ready to welcome our wonderful First Presbyterian Preschool families on September 4. While the list of summer activities is long, some of what we have been doing include having our classrooms painted, attending education workshops, meeting with other educators within the community, and hiring new staff to support our growing program. It will be very exciting to watch God at work this next year! We have a new Enrollment Manager at the Preschool, Suzanne Carberry. Suzanne has been teaching at First Pres Preschool for five years in the 3-, 4- and 5-year old classrooms. She will now only be teaching the 4-year old class, as well as be our Enrollment Manager. We could not ask for a better-suited person to be the ambassador of our preschool. She exudes warmth and has a tremendous knowledge of our program; any new family would be happy to be welcomed by her. We also have new staff coming on board this year and I am looking forward to introducing them in next month s update. These teachers are exceptionally qualified and exemplify the qualities and characteristics we look for in our teaching staff. It will be a seamless transition with this amazing group of women going forward. Our classes continue to fill as we have new families moving to the area and selecting First Presbyterian Preschool as their child s preschool. Thank you to all of those who are recommending our program! We continue to receive positive feedback on the new format and programs we are implementing for next year. These are good signs of new life and growth. In terms of other changes, we are considering ways to create a holistic program incorporating Parent Education events, and coffee mornings for parents and younger children to stay and build connections in these formative years here at the church. We will be offering events for parents not only during the daytime, but evening events as well. I have also been reaching out and connecting with other educators in the area on topics about curriculum in both the Lake Forest and Lake Bluff School districts. Jeff McHugh, Cherokee Principal, and Kellie Bae, Lake Bluff Curriculum Director and Assistant Principal have been extremely generous with their time and assistance. Lastly, the preschool website has been under some construction as we are developing a stronger brand strategy for our online presence. 8 Mission Corner An Update from the Rummage Sub-Committee Thanks to everyone who donated goods, talent and TIME to help facilitate a successful Spring Rummage Sale! We were able to raise over $149,000, which was a 15% increase over last spring. We have the weather to thank, as well as all the volunteers! After a sale, the operations team and the Rummage Sub-committee meet to discuss the best practices from the sale and improvements for the next time. In the Sub-committee meeting recap, it became apparent that the whole rummage operation could use a drill down to determine how to meet our ministry goal of sharing Christ s love with our neighbors: 1) Offering our community a local drop off for unwanted goods to recycle, reduce and reuse (thereby staying relevant and visual in our LF/LB hometowns) 2) Offering a sale that provides families quality clothing and home goods at wonderful prices 3) Providing a ministry and fellowship for the regular sorting crew as well as those who join for the sale weeks Our process could use some updating, streamlining and simplifying. In order to do this, we need to reflect and strategize, but with another sale in the fall, we do not have the time! As a team, we laid out a plan to forego a fall sale in 2018 and use that time to reassess our whole operation. We can do this because: 1) We have three organizations picking up our excess on a weekly basis, allowing us to sort with more intensity while keeping only the highest quality goods for our sale (and less actually). USAgain, Wings, and the First Presbyterian Church of Kenosha are our partners in this mission. a) USAgain pays us by the pound for textiles (we sort and sell the torn, too worn and stained items to them.) b) WINGS services families fleeing domestic violence and are funded, in part, by proceeds from their three resale stores. These stores are known for their selection of high-end donated merchandise of which we are donating our overflow. c) First Presbyterian Church of Kenosha has been able to significantly increase their mission dollars from their Rummage Sale with items we donate to them. 2) An increase in sales over last spring, and a reduction of costs which was accomplished through savings on supplies (Thank you Uline for a large donation of supplies!), and a reduction in labor costs. Along with our one year expense balance in our bank account, we are committed to provide Mission with $100,000 donation at the end of 2019 as we did in 2018 (barring any major catastrophic events.) WE HAVE SO MUCH OVERFLOW! We actually are having a hard time keeping up with sorting this summer, so if you would like to donate your time, we are always looking for help Mondays and Thursdays from 9:00 AM 12:00 PM. Thank you for your continued support of the Rummage Mission. We believe that this ministry is vital to live out our call to be Christ s disciples, improving the health of our community and our mission partners! 9 Meal a Month Sunday, September 9 Our Meal a Month ministry switches to a School Supply Drive in August. Sponsored by the Board of Deacons, this generous congregation has consistently helped students fill out their needs for the school year. Beginning August 5, we will collect for middle schoolers at Neal Math and Science Academy in North Chicago. You can pick up a list of most needed school supplies on any Sunday in August or go to firstchurchlf.org/school-supply-drive. For the students to have what they need, the due date for the supplies is on Sunday, September 9. Thank you for serving our neighbors! Volunteer at Soup Kitchen once a month! Friday, August 17 It s hard to experience the abundant life God wants for everyone when someone is chronically hungry. That s why we will be serving at Soup Kitchen every 3 rd Friday of the month from May through September. The next one will be on Friday, August 17 at the Holy Family Soup Kitchen in Waukegan. Worship & Music Join our Music Ministry Tour to the Netherlands! First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest s Music Ministry has a tradition of touring dating back to 1979, and our next trip is one not to be missed! From June 14 through 23, 2019, we will be making a music pilgrimage to the Netherlands. This tour will include visits to Leeuwarden, Delft, and Amsterdam. There will be several opportunities for worship and fellowship, three concert performances by the Lakeminster Ringers, and two organ recitals played by Dr. Barry Wenger. Won t you consider joining this tour? As with all of our music tours, participation in our musical ensembles is by no means a requirement. We love including anyone who would enjoy the traveling, and experiencing and sharing God s love together. 10 Session Highlights from the July 16 meeting by Rita Fossell, Assistant Clerk of Session Visitor, PNC (Pastor Nominating Committee) and PNC Study Group were welcomed. Moderator Dolan called the meeting to order with responsive liturgy from Psalm 136 and prayer, and she commented on her year plus with us. Looking back we can see God at work in many ways. The PNC Study Group shared its final report in written form recounting its research and recommendations discerned over the last several months. It will be posted on the church s website. After comments and compliments, a motion was approved to receive the report. A motion was approved to dissolve the PNC Study Group with great thanks. The last work of the PNC Study Group was to prepare a draft of the MIF (Ministry Information Form) for the PNC to consider. The form describes our church and its needs, as well as a profile of the pastor we hope to call. The PNC honed the MIF and brought it to Session for final consideration. After thorough discussion and a few small changes, a motion was passed to approve the MIF. It will now go to the Presbytery, then countrywide, for national posting. Visitors were excused as we moved to Executive Session. Officers for the Society were nominated and approved by motion. President Bob Price, Treasurer Frank Grossman, and Secretary Mary Watanabe. Personnel Committee reported that after considering several fine candidates to replace Nancy Dolan as Interim Pastor/Head of Staff, they have completed interviews and reference-checks of one candidate and hope to make an announcement soon. [The Rev. Bill Ingersoll has since been announced as the new Interim Pastor/Head of Staff. See the announcement below!] Finance Committee announced that a family has given a significant unrestricted gift to the church. The meeting ended by standing hand in hand, sharing Joys and Concerns, and praying the Lord s Prayer together. We welcome your questions and comments! Bill Ingersoll The Personnel Committee is thrilled to announce that the Rev. Bill Ingersoll has been called as the new Interim Pastor/Head of Staff of First Pres. The team came to a unanimous decision that among a number of strong candidates, Bill was God's choice for the church. Bill's first Sunday in worship will be on September 2, and his first Sunday preaching will be on September 9. See below for a little background on Bill. We are excited for him to join our church's interim pastoral staff! William J. (Bill) Ingersoll is a Minister of Word and Sacrament (Teaching Elder) in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and just completed his ministry as interim at The Presbyterian Church of Western Springs on July 20. Bill was raised in Huntington, West Virginia, and is a graduate of Marshall University in Huntington and Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond. He has served as Pastor or Head of Staff for 30 years in three Presbyterian congregations in Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas. He and his wife, Roberta, also a Presbyterian minister, moved in 2009 to Grayslake, Illinois, and since then Bill has served as an Interim Pastor in the Wisconsin and Illinois communities.
