There seem always to be conversations, discussions, reports and jokes to be shared. We have our sad days to share and, if we want to, we do that. Recently, my table started a conversation as to why we had come to-and remained at BHH. Why, it s the spirit, one person said. We all set our coffee cups down and leaned a little toward the center of the table. of course, we all agreed and returned to our apple pie. 8 Bell Tower Cruz-In 2017 The Bell Tower Cruz In 17 is coming up on July 30, 2017 on the church grounds. Last year we had 80+ vehicles in attendance and we are expecting at least 100 this year. One of the fun things for the show participants is the drawing of tickets for prizes. The prizes are typically automotive related items that are donated by church members and local businesses. We are asking the congregation s help to gather the prizes through individual contributions or by contacting a local business and asking them to donate a prize. If you would like to have someone shop for a prize for you to contribute, we will take a cash donation. Some of the prizes already donated are car washing kits from AutoZone and Craftsman Tools from Sears. Thank you in advance for your help and we hope to see everybody at the show. If you have questions, please contact Monte Brachmann (360) BELL RINGER DEADLINE FOR AUGUST NEWSLETTER: July 18th by 1:00 pm Mission U is right around the corner July 14th-17th in Ellensburg! We have several people going from our congregation: Deb Avery, Lyn Milner, Penny Wharton, Joan Hackett, Abigail Niehaus, Alison Niehaus Wish them all well as they travel to Ellensburg and we hope you all have FUN!! Vancouver Heights will be participating in the Peace & Justice Fair again this year. Start thinking about how you can help. It is July 9th at Esther Short Park. Not only will VHUMC have a table but we are also one of the Sponsors this year. You will see our name on the advertisement for the Fair and we are going to mentioned on stage also What is Peace & Justice Fair: The Vancouver Peace and Justice Fair will showcase the hard work and creative spirit of individuals, social justice groups, peace organizations, faith communities, performers, artists, businesses, and environmental activists who are making the world a better place. 10 Report from Annual Conference Sue Kohlhepp, Penny Wharton, Mary Zimmerman and Chris Hammett We meet as a congregation once per year at Charge Conference. We also meet once per year with the other churches in our Vancouver District at an Annual Conference. And we meet church-wide every four years at a General Conference. We had four members attend this year s Annual Conference: Penny Wharton, Chris Hammett, Mary Zimmerman, and Sue Kohlhepp. This is our report to you. Annual Conference was held in Portland June 14 to June 17. June 14 was the Installation of Bishop Elaine Stanovski followed by her Episcopal Address. She gave a sense of the theme of the conference: Do this and live. She said we are not at fault that the number of people in church is declining. Everything in this world experiences cycles, and the church is entering a downward period. June 15 was a series of business meetings (Plenary Sessions). The Annual Conference was actually the AC of Oregon/Idaho and the Pacific Northwest and a few folks from Alaska. Alaska s AC was about two weeks earlier. After lunch the clergy met at Vancouver 1 st UM Church, and the laity met together in the big ballroom. The laity meeting was great we shared ministry ideas. I brought back the suggestion that instead of hosting a clothing drive once per year we do it once per season and partner with Vancouver Housing Authority. The evening was a Memorial Service. June 16 was more business at separate and joint Plenary Sessions. Friday evening was a banquet and stressed that we are living in a time of abundance. We have all we need to do God s will. June 17 morning was ministry Alive Workshops. As we all know the UM Church is of two minds when it comes to inclusion of LGBTQIA folks. Next General Conference is The Bishops have called a 2019 General Conference to consider only this inclusion or exclusion of LGBTQIA people. A commission has been established (32 people: 3 US west coast, 1 African Bishop and 28 others from around the world including the US). One of the women from our west coast led a Workshop and answered questions. The Bishops have made it known that they hope the church does not schism. The commission is leading towards inclusion rather than exclusion. They are working to establish relationships with the delegates to the special 2019 conference. 10

11 All meetings, except Staff-Parish are open for anyone to attend 7/23 Missions Meeting 11:40 am 7/24 Trustee Meeting 6:30 pm 7/25 SPR Meeting 6:00 pm 7/25 Ad Board & Finance Meeting 7:00 pm Reconciling: Saturday in the Park is on July 8th. We are currently looking for volunteers. We will also have a table at the Peace and Justice Fair on September. Both events are held at Esther Short Park. Cheryl Niehaus Mission Committee: The NAMI program was very good and informative. NAMI considered the collection successful even though attendance was low on June 25th. NAMI hopes that the program met the needs of the congregation. NAMI also noted that they really enjoyed our worship service and loved the music. Darla Borella would like to thank Susan Chamberlain, Eric Smith and Mike and Cheryl Niehaus and everyone else that helped with food, set up and clean up. Missions will be holding a clothing drive some time in August. We are going to hold the clothing drive off site and are still in the process of looking for somewhere to hold it. Please hold onto clothing donations a bit longer. Darla Borella Finance and Stewardship Committee: We remain very strong thus far in pledged giving. Great job, Thank you!! We have paid 3 months apportionments. The Plant Sale brought in $ The Parking Lot Sale raised about $ We have raised $ towards our covenant relationship with Paul Jeffrey. Deb Avery, Finance Chair Trustee Committee: Wayne Roche along with the Trustee committee member and various volunteers have been working madly to get the Parsonage in order for Pastor JoAnn. Wayne was able to find someone to replace the floors and also paint despite a very short window of time at a reasonable price. 11
