Pre-Institute AM - 9/26 9:00am - 12:00pm Workshop Title Beyond the Five Practices Presenter: Robert Schnase Building a Disciple Making Ministry Presenters: Michelle Kirby, Jeff Kirby Workshop Description The best-selling book Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations stimulated a turnaround of new vitality for countless churches. Eleven years later, the world has changed dramatically, and so have the Practices. Today, we must focus not just on excellence and attractional forms of ministry; we must also focus on missional forms of ministry. We must be creating ministry outside the church, in the community, not just for people but with them. In this invigorating session, participants will learn the new forms of the Five Practices, and will be equipped with practical, do-able tactics for living out these Practices in any church setting. The Five Practices are Radical Hospitality, Passionate Worship, Intentional Faith Development, Risk-Taking Mission and Service, and Extravagant Generosity. We were commanded by Jesus to make new disciples and to make better disciples. In this workshop we will discuss how to create a disciple making culture and pathway for your congregation. Learn how to identify and invest in leaders, and how to launch and sustain the ministry. Discipleship Pathways Jim Harnish, Justin LaRosa Presenter: The Great Commission has not changed. Jesus still calls us to be in the disciple-making business. But how could we actually do that? Jim Harnish and Justin LaRosa led a creative team at Hyde Park United Methodist Church to answer that question. They designed a process that leads people in the disciplines of prayer, reflection on scripture, corporate worship, financial generosity, gifts-based service and invitational witness. As a result, over 80,000 people have followed A Disciple s Path to experience transforming discipleship. Jim and Justin have also consulted with congressional leaders across the country to help them find the disciple-making process that is best suited to their unique situation. This workshop will provide practical tools to help you become more effective in fulfilling the mission Jesus gave to us. How to Preach a Dangerous Sermon Presenter: Frank Thomas Preacher and professor Frank Thomas will motivate, challenge, and equip you to preach prophetically in this important session. Participants will learn the Four Qualities of Moral Imagination, which are important for any preacher, in any setting. You ll see how the Qualities work, and why they are so effective. And you ll learn practical ways to build these qualities into your own preaching and teaching, for messages that transform lives and perhaps the world. If you have struggled with how to preach in difficult times or about difficult topics, Frank Thomas s Four Qualities of Moral Imagination may be just what you need.
Is Your "Hurry" Causing You to Worry? Presenter: Barbara Roose Making Connections: Guest and Member Follow-up Presenter: Yvonne Gentile, Melanie Hill, Ginny Howell Personal Evangelism & Creating a Culture of Invitation Presenter: Scott Chrostek, Kelly Sisney Planning Worship-From Opening Song to Closing Prayer Presenter: Glen Shoup, Kevin Bogan, Robin Houghton Small Church, Big Impact Presenter: Blake Bradford Do you ever worry that you re doing too much as a leader? Or are you stressed because you re not sure if what you re doing is making a real difference? During this workshop, Barb Roose will draw on Joshua's Sun Stand Still experience in Joshua 10 to demonstrate how you can eliminate the hurry from your busy life in order to focus on what matters most. With authenticity, wit, and wisdom from both biblical and management principles, she will help you to navigate the Leadership Lifecycle Concept in order to bring clarity to what you do as well as what you no longer need to do, helping you to become more effective as a leader. Helping guests and members connect and stay engaged in the life of the church is critical to developing and sustaining a vibrant congregation. This workshop will focus on sharing the follow-up processes Resurrection uses to connect individuals into the life of the church beyond worship. Personal witness or the practice of evangelism requires daily accountability and discipline. This kind of leadership is required when seeking to create a culture of invitation within the church. Changing the world by the grace of Jesus Christ involves working individually as well as institutionally with your congregation to continually think outside of the sanctuary by thinking first of the mission field. This Preinstitute workshop will focus on the importance of creating a personal sense and practice of evangelism as well as what s required for instilling an institutional sense of evangelism by creating a culture of invitation. This workshop will cover the planning of all aspects of the worship service from song, scripture, sermon and prayer. Most congregations in the nation have a weekly worship attendance under 150. This workshop will assist you in adapting the BIG experience of the Church of the Resurrection and the Leadership Institute to your smaller context. In this Pre-Institute session, author and mission strategist Dr. Blake Bradford will join leaders of smaller churches in rethinking and right-sizing their ministry to make a God-sized impact in their communities. He will share models and practical steps for smaller congregations to simplify their decision-making, rethink community engagement, be intentional about discipleship formation, empower laity, and strategically utilize pastoral leadership.
Spiritual Self-Care in Troubled Times Presenter: Ginger Gaines-Cirelli Using Data to Increase Giving and Measure the Effectiveness of Your Discipleship Path Presenter: Joe Park, Joel Mikell How can pastors and other church leaders navigate the tumultuous waters of culture, especially during times when people even people who are part of the same congregation have such strongly divided views? And how can we do this without losing our own sense of joy and peace? Ginger Gaines-Cirelli provides compassionate, clear, wise counsel. Your church is probably already capturing all the information you need to fully fund your ministry Vision though the effective use of your discipleship path. Sadly, most churches don t know how to access, organize and utilize the information they are collecting. If you have responsibility for funding ministry or deepening discipleship, this intensive workshop will provide you with actionable strategies to transform how you think about and lead your ministry area. You will leave with the tools to define your theology of stewardship and connect it to your church s mission, discipleship path and communication strategy, as well as tools to develop an analytic dashboard, first time and lapsed donor systems, financial leader strategies, egiving development system, and other components of a Year-Round Generosity Strategy. Resources for all topics covered will be provided to each participant on a thumb drive.

Through creativity, networking, and fun we'll remember why ministry to children and their families is important. Then we'll boost your energy level with new ideas and connections to send you back to your ministry ready to serve again! The Great Commission has not changed. Jesus still calls us to be in the disciple-making business. But how could we actually do that? 5 Is Your "Hurry" Causing You to Worry? Presenter: Barbara Roose Rethinking Your Church Communications Strategy Presenter: Kem Meyer Small Church, Big Impact Presenter: Blake Bradford Special Needs Ministry-Chapter 2 Presenter: Jennifer Ross, Joan Baird Do you ever worry that you re doing too much as a leader? Or are you stressed because you re not sure if what you re doing is making a real difference? During this workshop, Barb Roose will draw on Joshua's Sun Stand Still experience in Joshua 10 to demonstrate how you can eliminate the hurry from your busy life in order to focus on what matters most. *With authenticity, wit, and wisdom from both biblical and management principles, she will help you to navigate the Leadership Lifecycle Concept in order to bring clarity to what you do as well as what you no longer need to do, helping you to become more effective as a leader Where churches miss on their communication strategy is limiting its definition to weekend slides, the bulletin, website and social media posts. Communications is a top five challenge often one of the most starved growth engines in the life of a church. Learn how to rethink your view of your church communications to more effectively work as a team, connect your messaging to those you hope to reach and fuel greater missional impact as a church Most congregations in the nation have a weekly worship attendance under 150. We will share innovative program ideas for including people of all ages and abilities in the life of the church. Included will be opportunities to visit with the Sonflower Bakery - operated by adults with cognitive and physical disabilities, Sonflower Ringers (hand bell choir for ringers with special needs), respite program ideas, Bible study programming, Boy Scouts, Matthew's Ministry choir, parent support group, theater programs, job training, and transition programs for those finishing high school. Spiritual Gifts Discovery: Putting Your Spiritual Gifts (and Your Congregation's) to Work Presenter: Melanie Hill, Darrell Holtz Workshop participants will go through a personal spiritual gifts discovery process, using Serving from the Heart (Resurrection's preferred gifts teaching tool), and also gain insight into how Resurrection teaches Serving from the Heart to help members discover and activate their spiritual gifts for service.
Spiritual Self-Care in Troubled Times Presenter: Ginger Gaines-Cirelli Transformational Serving Beyond your Community-Global and US Missions Presenter: Carol Cartmill Using Data to Increase Giving and Measure the Effectiveness of Your Discipleship Path Presenter: Joe Park, Joel Mikell How can pastors and other church leaders navigate the tumultuous waters of culture, especially during times when people even people who are part of the same congregation have such strongly divided views? And how can we do this without losing our own sense of joy and peace? Ginger Gaines-Cirelli provides compassionate, clear, wise counsel. Come learn how we continue to transition from a transactional to a transformational mindset in the work we do. We will share a framework for developing healthy global and domestic partnerships, a process for managing teams from application through post-trip experience, and methods for creating opportunities for families to serve together Your church is probably already capturing all the information you need to fully fund your ministry Vision though the effective use of your discipleship path. Sadly, most churches don t know how to access, organize and utilize the information they are collecting.
