3 Church of the Divine Child, Dearborn, Michigan Page 3 Things Above from Fr. Bilot We are now embarking on the last week of school. A whole academic year has come and gone! We are blessed with wonderful Administrators in the elementary school and high school. I am very grateful to Sr. Cecilia Bondy and Mrs. Ann Marie Grabarkiewicz, who lead the grade school, and to Mr. Eric Haley, Mr. J. Michael Courage and Mrs. Jessica Spearman, who guide the high school. Because of our faculties and staff, we have wonderful Catholic institutions of learning. We bring Jesus Christ into every classroom, situation and sport, knowing full well that the Lord is the reason for our being here. The Divine Child, Jesus Christ, guides us and challenges us to be great. Great in the sense that our priority should always be to grow in holiness. Sports, academia, clubs and arts are windows, allowing us to see how the Lord Jesus is present in everything we do and who we are called to be. As we enter into summer, please remember, as I mentioned last week, that our faith development -- Mass, prayer, spiritual reading, and Reconciliation -- does not stop just because summer is upon us. Our relationship with the Lord shouldn t take breaks, even when we are on vacation. The Holy Spirit is always leading us forward into the newness of life, and summertime is a great opportunity to step back and reflect on the Lord s call to holiness in our lives. I would like to give you an update on all the temporal works that are taking place around the campus. Hopefully, you have taken time to see the progress on our new Shrine (it is located on the north end of the high school and south of the convent off Silvery Lane). It is looking beautiful! When the statue of Mary arrives, we will have a formal blessing of the Shrine. We are now constructing our Field House on the DC Athletic Complex. This is the last piece of the Investing In Excellence campaign. The Field House consists of locker rooms, a coach/trainer room, lavatories, meeting room (for parish and school meetings and activities) and storage. With the completion of this building, our Athletic Complex will almost be complete. Next winter, we will renovate the concession area (near the bus compound). In the high school, renovations of the remaining science rooms will begin. And, in the elementary school, new flooring, painting of hallways and classrooms, and new lockers will be done. (The second floor was completed last summer.) I hope that you noticed the floors in the church. During Lent, we restored the marble in the sanctuary and, now, we are doing the aisles in the Church. They were tired from many feet walking on them! The floors have held up well over the years, and I wanted to make sure they shine for many years to come! With the conclusion of this school year, we will honor Sr. Cecilia Bondy as she celebrates 50 years of faithful dedication to Divine Child as a religious, as a teacher and as a principal. She has blessed so many lives with goodness. Thank you, Sr. Cecilia, for who you are and for what you have done for the parish and schools over the last 50 years. You have influenced so many people that they would be impossible to count! May the Lord continue to bless you in your ministry and in your vocation as a Bernardine Franciscan Sister! Blessings, Fr. 4 Page 4 Church of the Divine Child, Dearborn, Michigan All Lost in Wonder Godhead here in hiding, whom I do adore, Masked by these bare shadows, shape and nothing more, See, Lord, at thy service low lies here a heart Lost, all lost in wonder at the God thou art. (Adoro te devote, written by St. Thomas Aquinas, translated by Fr. Gerard Manley Hopkins) These words of St. Thomas Aquinas that come from the Office for Corpus Christi, help us to reflect on the mystery of the Eucharist which we celebrate today. In reflecting on the gift that we have in the Eucharist, that Jesus is substantially present in His body, blood, soul and divinity, we are Lost, all lost in wonder at the God thou art. While the principal feast for the Blessed Sacrament has always been Holy Thursday, when we celebrate the institution of the Eucharist and the priesthood, the Solemnity of Corpus Christi isolates the mystery of the Eucharist so that we can celebrate it in a particular way. In many places in the world, Corpus Christi is still celebrated on what would have been this past Thursday. Every year on Corpus Christi, it is important to reflect on how we receive the Eucharist. Have I been treating the Eucharist as the source and summit of my life (as this sacrament has been described in the Catechism of the Catholic Church)? How can I better prepare to receive the Eucharist each week? If I am in a state of mortal sin, have I been to Confession before receiving Communion? As we have done in previous years, we will be having a procession of the Blessed Sacrament through the neighborhood immediately following the 12:30 Mass. I would encourage you to join us. If you already went to Mass this weekend, feel free to come around 1:30 to get in line for the procession. We can be a powerful sign of the love of Christ when we process together in the streets gathered around the Blessed Sacrament as we are all lost in wonder at this great gift. Corpus Christi Eucharistic Procession Sunday, June 3 Immediately following the 12:30pm Mass at Church of the Divine Child Please join us as we walk together through the neighborhood singing praises and giving glory to God on this special feast day!! Parish-Wide Summer Book Read How do I find fulfillment in life? How do I obtain happiness? Author Fr. Jacques Philippe provides some answers. In In his his book, Called to to Life, he explains that a complete and fulfilled life is is much more assured when we stop trying to to chart our our own own course, when we realize that we we are are essentially creatures called by God. He describes where and how these calls take place: the events of of life, in in Scripture and interior motions of of the the Holy Holy Spirit. Purchase the book at or or bookseller of your choice. Read it, and come for discussion led by our seminarian intern, Zaid Chabaan. Wednesday, July 25 7:00pm - 8:30pm Gathering Room of the Church. - Fr. Matthew Hood

5 Church of the Divine Child, Dearborn, Michigan Page 5 What s in the Z Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire? Corrie Ten Boom There are many misconceptions about Pope Francis. As Catholics, we need a clear understanding of our Holy Father. Join us for an evening to learn about Pope Francis life, words, and actions in the life of the Church. Presentation by Zaid Chabaan, our seminarian intern at Divine Child and currently in Theology III at Sacred Heart Major Seminary Please join us on Wednesday, June 20, pm Gathering Room I came across this quote the other day and it really struck me and touched me. It made me think about my own prayer and relationship with God. Often times, prayer can become routine, boring, and fruitless, but prayer is our wireless connection with God and regardless of how we feel during prayer, we must make sure it is our steering wheel rather than our spare tire. Plans are underway for the Vicariate Vacation Bible School! We need your help to make this a fabulous experience for the children. Please stop by the VBS Supply Drive Boards in the Gathering Room after the Masses this weekend, and see if there is something you can contribute. Just take a tag and bring the items back to the Gathering Room on June 9 or 10. We will use them to plan great games, yummy snacks, awesome arts and crafts, fun science activities, and set the scenes for our Bible adventures! Thanks for all your support!

SVdP Jane Doe Recently, I had an eviction case, and met up with the most charming client, that I will call Jane Doe. Although she worked full-time, her paycheck just wasn t enough for her to handle all her bills this past month. Driving an older model car presented itself with a seriously high car repair bill. Jane absolutely had to have her source of driving resolved, in order to get to her job. She plunked down a chunk of cash, making her short on the ability to pay rent. Jane always paid her bills on time. But this time, she was thrown a curve ball by the Rental Office who threatened her with eviction. They gave her two business days to come up with the money. She pled with them to hold off a few more days until her paycheck arrived, but a majority of businesses are considered bottom line and pretty heartless with their final decisions. Jane called many churches to assist her, and her time was running short on the hourglass. The sands of time were ticking away. And finally, Jane reached our SVdP conference. She resided within our churches boundary lines and was eligible to receive assistance based upon our bank account s balance. With twin cooperation, neighboring church SVdPs chipped in to defray the heavy cost of the rent. As a lead in cases, you are generally responsible for coordinating the home/office visit, consulting with the President, and closing the case by presenting the money owed. But, lo and behold, on the due date I couldn t close the case, so I sought the help of another member to present the check to the Rental Office. I explained to Jane that my conference prevented me from closing the case but a fellow member could close the case. Jane was so relieved, she began to cry. After I assured her, she said something that threw me for a loop. She inquired as to the nature of my conference. I explained to her that I belonged to the local Garden Club which consequently, kept me very busy with conferences as well as civic projects to beautify the city. I d volunteer for those projects to pay off this bill you just paid, Jane said emphatically. I can garden, and I d be there for you. I realized that as I put the telephone down, tears came down my face. With a prayer of thanksgiving to God on behalf of our donors, we joyfully continue God s work in serving the poor and disadvantaged, the lost and forgotten. God bless you. ~~ Mindy Delano As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands. One for helping yourself, the other for helping others.

9 Church of the Divine Child, Dearborn, Michigan Page Ed Hermann Parent Award This award was established in 1995 as a tribute to Ed Hermann for his dedication to the athletic programs at Divine Child High School. This award is unique because it focuses on parents who are a vital key to the success achieved by our sports programs. We are pleased to announce Lew Newcomb as the 2017 Ed Hermann Parent Award recipient. In his letter nominating Lew, Head Football Coach John Filiatraut wrote: There is no finer example of being selfless than Lew Newcomb. He has volunteered to do the stats for our football team for the last 4 seasons. Lew has taken a simple job and made it into one of the best things about our Friday nights. Our stats are now available online immediately after the game. He has researched new ways to keep stats and get them communicated to the people who need them, primarily the press and media. Lew does not have a child in the football program, he is just a guy that loves high school athletics and being around the action. Lew has also turned into quite the troubleshooter. Often before games something is missing or falling apart or just going wrong, Lew has a way of fixing things and pitching in! I appreciate Lew and everything he has added to our football program. Lew Newcomb is an excellent representative of the Ed Hermann Award. Girls Cross Country Coach Jack Benitez said I am honored to recommend Lew Newcomb. During the years when Lew s daughter was on the cross country team, he was very supportive of the team as well as the coaching staff. He was always ready to help; from carrying equipment, to coordinating team dinners, to assisting the injured and lending encouragement during competitions. He monitored those athletes unable to attend team camp allowing then to continue training. Lew supported the team in all areas. I hope this honor reflects in a small way how much we appreciated Lew s contribution and support. Lew is the proud father of Lily 17 and Finn. 12 Page 12 Church of the Divine Child, Dearborn, Michigan F ey s F ru Bish p F ey C u ci 2660 servi g Dearb r si ce 1927 Corpus Christi Sunday Food Got Some? As I was driving through Detroit the other day, I noticed a billboard in mid-town around Cass and Antoinette. The big vertical billboard showed a large crucifix with the words, Food Got Some? At first glance, I was upset; I thought what are they doing to my Lord now? I am not sure what the intent of the advertiser is, but after I stared at it a bit longer, I noticed that there was a chalice beneath the crucifix with blood dripping into the chalice. Then - I got it! No matter what the advertiser s intent was, I looked at it as a beautiful reminder that we as Roman Catholics consume the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ at every sacrifice of the Mass that we partake in. I was no longer confused or upset, but relieved to see that someone is there trying to remind us that when we receive the Holy Eucharist, we become one with our Savior, body, blood, soul and divinity. This Corpus Christi Sunday our Divine Child Community can partake in a procession of the Holy Eucharist around the neighborhood, proclaiming that Christ lives in the Eucharist and we as a parish try to live in Christ. Eucharistic meal is an indication of the unity of those who have been called together by the Holy Spirit as one body, the Body of Christ (1 Cor 10:17). To take another example, the individual grains of wheat and individual grapes have to be harvested and to undergo a process of grinding or crushing before they are unified as bread and as wine. Because of this, bread and wine point to both the union of the many that takes place in the Body of Christ and the suffering undergone by Christ, a suffering that must also be embraced by his disciples. If you would like to grow in faith with brother Foley Knights, call the office at to get more information or you can talk to any brother Knight. We can get you the necessary forms and get you ready for the upcoming degree on June 24 th. Once you become a Knight, you can begin attending meetings and become an active member of the proud brotherhood called Knights of Columbus. Bishop Foley Council meets the second Wednesday of the month right here at Divine Child. As we prepare for Knighthood, Knights are reminded of the significance of the Eucharist as we are charged to protect it and understand its True Presence. We are called to receive Jesus in the Eucharist and with it the many blessings that come with it. The Holy Mass is NOT just another reenactment of the Last Supper; it is the crucifixion and sacrifice of our Lord every time. I took the following from the USSCB website (usccb.org): Are the consecrated bread and wine merely symbols? The transformed bread and wine that are the Body and Blood of Christ are not merely symbols because they truly are the Body and Blood of Christ. As St. John Damascene wrote: the bread and wine are not a foreshadowing of the body and blood of Christ By no means! but the actual deified body of the Lord, because the Lord Himself said: This is my body ; not a foreshadowing of my body but my body, and not a foreshadowing of my blood but my blood ( The Orthodox Faith, IV [PG 94, ]). At the same time, however, it is important to recognize that the Body and Blood of Christ come to us in the Eucharist in a sacramental form. In other words, Christ is present under the appearances of bread and wine, not in his own proper form. We cannot presume to know all the reasons behind God's actions. There are various ways in which the symbolism of eating bread and drinking wine discloses the meaning of the Eucharist. For example, just as natural food gives nourishment to the body, so the Eucharistic food gives spiritual nourishment. Furthermore, the sharing of an ordinary meal establishes a certain communion among the people who share it; in the Eucharist, the People of God share a meal that brings them into communion not only with each other but with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Similarly, as St. Paul tells us, the single loaf that is shared among many during the Church of the Divine Child Bishop Foley KofC Council #2660 A CHARITY THAT EVANGELIZES AN OPEN INVITATION TO JOIN OUR ORDER Stephen Lentz, Membership Director Dominic Raona, Grand Knight Knights of Columbus Office or Membership Do you hear the Lord calling your name like I did?
