Pastor s Message CHRISTIAN EDUCATION (Part II) Without proper Christian Education, a person, a family and a nation is lost. As secular education gives some direction to the individual, so does the Christian Education through the Bible and Church teaching gives the skill to live God s pleasing life. God says, "My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge, a people without understanding will come to ruin!" (Hos. 4:6, 14) Just to have the zeal for your church and your nation is not sufficient. Apostle Paul writing about his nation Israelites said, Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites are that they may be saved. For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. (Rom. 10:1-2) Catholicos Aram I in his THE ARMENIAN CHURCH BEYOND THE 1700 th ANNIVERSARY book writes, The sense of being a missionary community which, due to internal and external reasons has almost been lost, should constantly sustain and guide the life and witness of our Church. The Church s mission must aim at transforming and building-up the community. It must deal particularly with issues and concerns related to Christian education, social diakona and evangelism. I consider these areas of our Christian life of primary importance. The future of our Church is not assured simply by perpetuating its structure and traditions, but by deepening the faith of its people through inner conversion and spiritual transformation. Our people urgently need such an inner purification in light of growing dominance of secular values and tends. (Page 18) Catholicos Aram I in his message says, Christian education is a compelling necessity for the Armenian Church. Starting from the early centuries, the Armenian Church has paid special attention to education. Indeed, beginning with the discourses of St. Gregory the Illuminator and continuing with the spiritual and intellectual work of the Holy Translators, and then the spiritual literature Page 3

Pastor s Message created by our church fathers during the Silver Age; beginning with the spiritual, moral and social teachings and canons of the Armenian Church and ending with its extensive humanitarian, evangelical and educational activity in Armenia, Cilicia and the Diaspora, there is eloquent proof of the deep concern and care tangibly displayed by our church with regard to the spiritual and moral education of the Armenian people. Christian education remains and must remain a priority within the scope of the Armenian Church s mission of faith. In this regard, we consider it important to underscore certain basic points, which constitute the special nature of the Christian education being carried out within the life of the Armenian Church. The Bible is the center of the Christian mission, teachings, rituals and, generally speaking, the Christian life. The spiritual and moral principles of the Bible are considered the cornerstone of Christian education for all times and all Christian peoples. However, the Bible finds its precise, true and full meaning and value in the common life of the church. Without Christian Education, there will be no Christian, that is no Christ-Like life, or Christian character built in the person. Again, our Catholicos emphasizes in his message, Being a true Christian requires a total identification with one s essence and existence, because it means consciously following Christ (Matthew 16:24) and putting on Christ, as characterized by the Apostle Paul (Romans 13:14). Therefore, Christian education is not just a transmission of knowledge; rather, it is the spiritual and intellectual making of an individual or a community, having Christ as the way, the truth, and the life (John 14: 6). This is why Christian education must be realized essentially as participation in the mission of faith of the mystical body of Christ, the church. Bible based Christian education will enable us to cope with the problems of the family, church, society and the world in general. How can a person, without proper teachings of the Word of God, know that the same God who created heaven and earth is a loving and caring God, who is interested in our well being. He understands our sorrows and grief, and He is able, willing and ready to help us out. The Catholicos, acknowledging the impotence of evangelism, sates. Page 4

Pastor s Message Evangelism, preaching, social service and other initiatives connected with the church s mission are, undoubtedly, mandatory for the spread of the Christian faith. However, among all these, the spiritual and moral formation of the Christian man or woman is an absolute necessity, as a precondition for the spiritual building of the church. The church, as a community of faith, is comprised of individuals. The church becomes strong and viable in the spiritual and moral sense, when its members have been molded through wholesome religion These days, religious education has assumed a more pronounced importance for churches. Indeed, the serious dangers brought about by globalization have begun to threaten the basic beliefs constituting the essence and foundation of Christianity. The man-centered standards and man-serving approaches of the world have begun to call in question the principles of the spiritual kingdom established by Christ. In today s world, when the spiritual kingdom of Christ and the material kingdom of man are in constant conflict, it is the urgent obligation of the church to arm Christians with the eternal truths and values of the Gospel. If we want to have saving knowledge and survive as a Christian nation, we have to have proper teaching of the Word of God. We have to have Christian Education if we want to know God, and have fellowship with Him. We have to have Christian Education if we want to know Christ as the Way, the Truth and the Life, as our Catholicos says. We have to educate ourselves and the young generation from the Source of life-- the Word of God. Our forefathers gave their lives for it. Finally, to preach and evangelize the Word of God, the Gospel, is a command given by our Lord Jesus Christ, who said before His departure from this earth. "All authority in Heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations... teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I will be with you always, to the very end of the age." (MT. 28:18-20) We have to armor our children with the Word of God. We have to teach them in season and out of season [we have] to do the work of evangelist, as the Apostle says. (II Tim. 4:2,5) And our Catholicos is challenging us by calling the 2008 THE YEAR OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION. Rev. Fr. Aram Stepanian Pastor Page 5

Ladies Guild Ladies Guild Report by Carol Bedrosian The Ladies Guild met in May and June, the last two meetings before their summer break. Meetings will resume on Monday, September 8 at 6:00 pm with a potluck supper in the church hall. All women of the church are invited to attend, and may join the Guild if interested. In addition to our bi-annual election of officers, our June meeting included an end of year cookout at Joanne Khoury s. New officers elected for include President, Carol Bedrosian; Vice-President, Joanne Khoury; Recording Secretary, Martha Garabedian; Treasurer, Claire Malkasian; Corresponding Secretary, Armen Bagdasarian; Advisors, Alice Sagherian and Dona Nashawaty. Our thanks go to outgoing board members Recording Secretary, Joy Callan and Advisor, Nay Avakian. Over the summer, the Ladies Guild sponsored a table at the annual Picnic in the Park at the Whitinsville Community Center for July, 19, selling losh kebob and baked goods to the crowds. It was a very hot day, but successful, thanks to chairwoman Dona Nashawaty and her crew. The Guild also baked and sold lamajeune and choreg at the annual church picnic, as well as kept the hot pilaf, delicious salad, bread and khema coming to all our picnic guests. Once again, we were blessed with another fabulous day for food, weather, and community. As we head into fall, the Guild will be busy preparing for our annual church bazaar in December. There is much work to be done and the Guild is working towards making our kitchen the safest and most comfortable it can be to assist us in all that needs to be done with our aging, but dedicated, population. We welcome anyone who would like to learn Armenian cooking or help with bazaar food preparation. No experience is necessary. Please join us! Contact Carol Bedrosian at or carol@spiritofchange.org for information. Page 8

Picnic Picnic 2008 During a summer that seemed to provide more rain and clouds than sun we were once again blessed with blue skies, a pleasant breeze, and guests who praise the hospitality and warmth of our parish. Dismiss the fact that this year s picnic was our biggest financial success; more importantly it once again showed that when united in a common goal our community is second to none and there is nothing we can not achieve. Festive, joyous, are not only words that describe the day of the picnic but also reflect the working spirit of all of us who share in conversation and laughter while going about the difficult preparations for three days. Truly it is the spirit of fellowship. On behalf of Der Aram Stepanian and the Board of Trustees we express our appreciation to all of you for your donations, work, and ideas in making this day a wonderful success in the spirit it is meant to capture. Respectfully, Picnic Committee: Rick Kazarian Joanne Khoury Peter Bedigian Picnic - More than 1200 people enjoyed the picric with delicious meal and good fellowship under no cloud weather. Page 9

Car Wash Sunday School Holds Successful Car Wash By Alan Goshgarian On Saturday, May 24 our Sunday school held its second annual Car Wash for Karlen in the church parking lot. As you know Karlen Avetian is our Sunday school orphan friend from Armenia. Karlen and his mother Hasmik, live in an apartment in Yerevan, and we have been assisting Karlen for two years now. Karlen turned 11 years old in December. For his birthday, our children saved money (in the offering plate each week) and sent Karlen an abundance of paints, brushes and art supplies. Karlen s favorite class in school is art. The car wash was held from ten in the morning until two in the afternoon. Attendance was excellent, and the weather was beautiful. All of the children worked hard and had lots of fun splashing and chasing each other with sponges. Pizza was served for lunch. The cost per customer was whatever is in your heart, and our friends were very generous. The Sunday school raised nearly $800 (compared to $400 our first year). According to one young student who kept count, we washed about seventy cars. The Prelacy Orphan Program asks that we contribute $200 per year until our orphan is 18 years old. The surplus money raised this year will also help fund the Sunday school program, as well as be kept in reserve for Karlen. Even our youngest students have a clear understanding of the importance of helping friends that are less fortunate than us. Helping our orphan friends in Armenia is a valuable Christian lesson for our children. Page 14

Bazaar Update Silent Auction Update: By Ani Gigarjian It's NEVER too early to be thinking about our bazaar. This year, the silent auction table could really use your help. With our troubled economy, relying on businesses to contribute merchandise has become increasingly difficult. We are hoping that our parishioners can help by making a contribution to the silent auction table. Are you interested in making some type of a basket? Do you want to donate an item? Are you willing to donate, but are unsure of what to do? Do you have friends in "high places"? Do you work for a company that would donate some products? We have lots of ideas and have lots of items that we're looking for, so please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions. Please remember that if you frequent a business (haircut, oil change, manicure), you can consider asking them at your next appointment if they'd like to support our bazaar. It's always easier asking for a contribution if you're a current customer than if you're a total stranger. Let them know that their contribution is tax-deductible. Please contact Ani Gigarjian if you'd like to help in any way. She will have standard letters available that you can hand out to a potential donor. Thank you in advance for your consideration. As always, please don't wait...the earlier the better. Digin Almas, 101 years old, (young in spirit and body) picking "derev" (grape leaves) for yalanchy from Der Hayr's & Yeretzgin's back yard. 16 Summer Camp WHERE IN THE WORLD WERE THE KIDS THIS SUMMER? Do you know where you would have found a lot of Whitinsville kids this past summer...camp Haiastan!!! Over 15 people from the Whitinsville Church attended Camp Haiastan in Franklin this summer, whether as a camper, a counselor, a volunteer or a staff member. Day Campers included Aznive Gigarjian, Meline Markarian, Talia Markarian, Jack Whittlesey, Benjamin Laverdiere and Zachary Laverdiere. Overnight campers included Anoush Gigarjian and Charles Whittlesey. Alison Amorello, Armenag Antranigian and Aram Antranigian served as counselors for the summer. Bobby Gigarjian, Alan Goshgarian and Ani Gigarjian volunteered their time with the campers teaching them the basics about everything from Arts and Crafts, to nature and fishing. Bruce Gigarjian was part of an ensemble that provided live Armenian music to the children during their Saturday night dances. Finally, between Executive Director Roy Callan, Social Worker Claudia Antranigian and "you name it, I do it" Joy Callan, the camp has never run smoother! If you are interested in helping at Camp Haiastan or want more information about sending a camper for the 2009 season, please see Roy Callan or visit Page 16

Your generosity is only surpassed by your great spirit of support. We can only hope you have enjoyed this wonderful event as much as we enjoyed working with all of you. This event is one of the many events that we have brought forth to our members and friends for this year. We will be holding our annual bazaar on December 6 th. 18 Annual Golf Outing By David Papazian Golf Tournament On August 5, 2008 our Church hosted its 9 th Annual Golf Outing at the beautiful Blackstone National Golf Club in Sutton MA. This year we were fortunate to have the largest number of golfers in our 9 year history, (95). The weather was picture perfect and we had a spectacular day of fun and socialization. The day started at 11:00 am, with registration and lunch followed with the players practicing and catching up with old friends and relatives. All the players received a handsome golf shirt as a welcoming gift, given by the Church. Before the actual start of play all the golfers participated in a putting tournament in which Mark Malkasian was the winner. He received a nice prize of $ At 1:00 pm all the players started play on their designated hole, and then all the fun really began. Blackstone National then became Little Armenia for the next 4 hours. The group of players was led by our dear Der Aram. I would be willing to wager that most of you did not realize Der Aram was such a fine athlete. At the conclusion of the golfing we all joined each other for appetizers and drinks. WE enjoyed some delicious yalanchi made by: Joanne Khoury, Jeanne Papazian, Julia Petersen, Yeretskeen Margaret, Betty Jean Bedrosian, and Mary Amorello. Thank you very much ladies. In fact, the yalanchi was so good that we raffled some off and made $140. A steak dinner followed and then we gave out the awards to the winners. The most fun part of the evening activities were the raffles and a lively auction. It must be said that everyone of the 110 dinner guest were very supportive in our efforts to raise money for our church. We raised almost $7, on these two events. Over the past 9 years, we have been able to have raised over $100,000 for our beloved church. Our success is due to the wonderful generosity of all the great people past and present. I want to say THANK YOU to a special few with whom I would not have been able to complete this job. First of all my wonderful wife, Jeanne, who was my right arm in all this. Secondly to Joanne Khoury, who was my computer specialist and also special thanks to Betty Jean and Ashley Bedrosian for all their help. Most of all to all those who where contributors as sponsors and all those who gave gifts. In addition, a special thanks to Der Hayr for all his support and encouragement. Thank you very much. Hope to see you all next year was we will be celebrating our 10 th year. Bring some new friends and let us make the 10 th year the biggest and best year ever yet. Page 18

2008 Picnic Performance By The Siroun Dancers Siroun Dancers What a beautiful day it was... the sun was shining and the wind was blowing just enough to make the red, blue and orange scarves dance in the air. It was the day of the Picnic and as some were busy outside with the festivities the Siroun and Sirounig Dancers were getting costumes on inside the church anticipating their next big Picnic performance. The girls did two dances. The first dance showed off our newest members, "The Sirounigs" and boy were they cute!! They wore the original costumes made by one of our talented Siroun moms, Ani Gigarjian. You could feel the excitement in the air when they marched out with their "anoushig" smiles! The second dance was more challenging for our Siroun Dancers but they did it with grace. Our soloist Nairi Bekiarian gave a spectacular performance as well. All in all the girls did an amazing job. Thank you again Soorp Asdvadsadzin for allowing us to share our cultural pride with you through dance. We hope you enjoyed the show as much as we enjoyed presenting it to you! With love, Kristi Markarian (Director/Choreographer of the Siroun Dancers) Page 21

Obituaries OBITUARIES COME TO ME, ALL YOU WHO ARE WEARY AND BURDENED, AND I WILL GIVE YOU REST. Matthew 11:28 Hayr Soorp Oshagan Minassian Father Oshagan was born and raised in Aleppo, Syria; son of Karnik & Sirvart Minassian. His elementary and secondary education was at the Haygazian High School in Alleppo. He studied at the Armenian theological Seminary in Antelias, Lebanon; earning his B.A. He was transferred to the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem where he was ordained a celebrate Priest. He came to the United States and served several churches. He terminated his active Pastorate in l955 because of a spinal cord injury. When we consecrated our church, November 24, 1957 we did not have a permanent parish priest assigned to serve the community. Very Rev. Fr. Oshagan Minassian was asked to come to Whitinsville to form a church choir and perform various duties until our church was assigned a priest. Under his tutelage a choral group was organized and performed its first concert in April Father Oshagan taught us the Divine Liturgy and its meanings and introduced us to the Rites and ceremonies of our church. We were all novices in the ways of the church and were excited to have such a teacher with us during our formative years. Father Oshagan holds a Masters Degree in Religious Education (1962), a Ph.D. in Church History, (l974), and a Masters Degree in Music )l982) from Boston University. In appreciation for his work and choral activities, Hayr Soorp received many letters of recognition and plaudits from both professional individuals and institutions and citations from the Union of Composers of Armenia in l986 and from the Ministry of Culture in Armenia in l994. Father Oshagan was the director of the choir and founder of the Erevan Choral Society. We will truly miss his annual concerts of both Armenian folk and Christmas music.
