History of Vacation Bible School Here is a quick history course o'n VBS-from New Horizons in Vacation Bible School compiled by Willie R. Beaty. Vacation Bible School was the idea of Mrs. Walter Aylett Hawes, a doctor's wife. Her goal was to get children off the streets of New York. In 1898 and 1899 Mrs. Hawes rented a beer hall in New York's East side to conduct her Everyday Bible School. In 1900 Mrs. Hawes' pastor, Howard Lee Jones, insisted that the Bible school move to the church building, Epiphany Baptist Church. After two weeks it became clear that children from the East Side would not attend at the church, so Mrs. Hawes moved the school back to a site near the beer hall. In the early 20th century, Vacation Bible School became a growing trend. While Mrs. Hawes was indeed a Baptist, Vacation Bible School was a nondenominational event in those early years. In 1922 the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention assigned the work of Vacation Bible School to thesundayschool Administration Department. In 1924 a Vacation Bible School Department was formed and Homer Grice, a pastor from Georgia, became its first director. At that point Vacation Bible School was usually a 4 week event! Why Vacation Bible School? According to Southern Baptist Convention statistics from 2000, almost 3 million people were enrolled in Southern Baptist Vac9tion Bible Schools. Over 91,000 decisions for Christ were reported during VBS. More people have come to know Jesus as Savior through VBS than through any other single church event.

B-l-ack History Praise Profiles Day 1-Bata Drums Origin: Southwest Nigeria {dating back roughly 500 years) History: It is believed that the bata drum was introduced by a Yoruba king named Shang6 el rey del tambor. Awareness of the instrument did not spread until the slave trade took place in the 1800s. During this time, close to 300,000 Africans were brought to Cuba~ The percussion instrument is used primarily for religious or semi-religious purposes by the native culture from the land of Yoruba, located in Nigeria.,. 1. -
B'l~ck Hi-story Praise Profiles Day 2-Balafon, aka "xylophone. or Gyile". :~?-i~ I. < l!l:!l!\,. Origin: West Africa History: In the Malinke language (in Guinea), Balaton is a compound word: Balan is the name of the instrument, and f6 is the verb "to play." Balaton, therefore, is really the act of playing the Bala. The balafon is generally capable of producing 18 to 21 notes. The sacred instrument Sosso-Bala has symbolized the freedom and cohesion of the Mandingue community since the thirteenth century..".'<-.
BJackC'History Praise Profiles :;,~ ~ Day 3-Nyatiti Origin: Kenya History: The rwatiti is traditionally played by the luo tribe of Western Kenya. It is also called kanbanane. Kanba means "string," and nane means "eight"-so the nyatiti is a simple, eightstringed lyre. Two slender, cylindrical arms extend upward and outward from a disk-shaped sounding board, making it about two-to-three-feet long. Traditionally, the player sits down and places the instrument in front of him. The stool that the player usually sits on is traditionally known as Orindi. (See of this instrument being played.)
Day 4-Banjo_ Origin: The first written record of the banjo was from Richard Johnson's diary from when he explored the Gambra River in Africa in History: Originally created.by African slaves, the banjo is a four-, five-, or six-stringed in- strument with a piece of animal skin or plastic stretched over a circular frame. Early African-influenced banjos were built around a gourd body and a wooden stick neck. These in-. struments had varying numbers of strings, often including some form of drone. In fact, through. the introduction of the banjo, slaves influenced the early development of the music that became country and bluegrass music. VBS Director's Supplemental Guide - Rock Rt Out! 7
Black,History Praise Profiles Day 5-The Juba Dance Origin: West Africa History: Originally 'an African-American plantation dance (the modern-day tap dance originated with this dance), slaves performed it during their gatherings when no rhythm instruments were allowed, due to fear of secret codes hidden in the drumming. The sounds were also used to communicate, just as Yoruba talking drums were used... '.'t.:

"Praise Him in Advance" (Total Praise #1 09) I've had my share of ups and downs, times when there was no one around, God came and spoke these words to me, "Praise will confuse the enemy." I started singing, I started clap pin', I started dancin', people were laughin', they knew my problems, they knew mypain, but I knew God would take them away. I have my share of ups and downs, times when there was no one around, God came and spoke these words to me, "Praise will confuse the enemy." I started singin', I started clap pin', I started dancin', people were laughin', they knew my problems, they knew my pain, but I knew God would take them away. That's why I praise him with my hands. That's why I praise him with a dance, He's given me a second chance... Come on, lets praise him in advance. That's why I praise him with a song, when things are right and when they're wrong. He's given me a second chance. Come on lets praise Him in advance. That's why I praise Him in advance. 13 Understanding Young Children Listed below are age-level characteristics of young children. Between the ages of two and three, children. begin developing the capacity for empathy; can take part in conversation, using three-to-four-word sentences; o can answer who, where, and when questions; can recite nursery rhymes; can draw a person and its features; e insist on doing things on their own; may have difficulty with sharing and taking turns. Four-year-old children.. enjoy performing for others; enjoy displaying new knowledge; can reproduce short verses, rhymes, and songs from memory; can speak clearly, argue with words, and use sentences consisting of at least five words; tend to tell jokes and use silly language; tend to ask why, when, how, and where questions; are able to listen to long stories, but may misinterpret the facts. Sharing God's Plan of Salvation As you teach the children in your class, you will also have the opportunity to help parents learn about the Bible and discover God's love for them. Use the steps below to share God's plan of salvation with parents and caregivers. Use the ABCs of Salvation A. Say, "Admit you have sinned" (see Psalm 32:5), or"done wrong:' Go through just a few of the Ten Commandments-stealing, lying, coveting. Your students will surely find themselves guilty. All people have sinned (see Romans 3:23), and that separates us from God (see Isaiah 59:2). The punishment for sin is eternal separation from God and His heaven. B. Say," Believe Jesus is God's Son. He took the punishment for our sins by dying on the cross (see Romans 5:8). We must also believe that Jesus is God's Son and that God raised Him from the dead:' C. Say, "Call on God to forgive you. 'Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall besaved''(acts 2:21, KJV). When we are sorry for our sins and want to stop doing wrong, we can ask God to forgive us. This simple act of faith gives us the gift of salvation (see Acts 16:31):' :. -,... ',;d', 4 PICTURE LESSON CARDS TEACHER'S MANUAL
