1 Parish Council Minutes August 21, 2017 Present: Father Todd Riebe, Cheryl Beckerich, Shannen Priser, Luke Stone, Molly Williams, Jody Bruce, David Christoff, Kevin Kubacki, Stacey Hoaglin, Nikki Scott, Tom Shrack, Kris Chaney, Greg Thatcher, Ann Bagwell Guest: Aaron Morrow The Council went around the table and everyone introduced themselves to Father Todd. Father Todd opened the meeting with a prayer at 7:05 pm Review of the Minutes: The council reviewed the minutes from the June 19, 2017 Parish Council Meeting. Kris Chaney made a motion to approve the minutes as written. Greg Thatcher seconded the motion. All were in favor of approving the minutes as written. Old Business Summer Social Aaron Morrow Aaron reported that approximately 2400 people attended the Summer Social. The weather was favorable on both Friday and Saturday evening. The financial report is not yet finalized; but the social is expected to be profitable. Aaron will advise the council of the final numbers once those are available. There were some onetime expenses for equipment this year. Food costs were also higher this year. The After Summer Social survey was overwhelmingly positive. People gave high marks to the outside food vendors, the craft beer, and to the gambling tent. As always there were good suggestions for possible tweaks or changes to the Social. Zink (Beer) Distributing was new to the Social this year and was a great partner for both the Summer Social and the Golf Outing. Next year, there will be a 5K run as a part of the Summer Social. The run will probably will be the week before the Social, but participants in the run will likely receive some kind of perk that will bring them to the actual Social. Golf outing Aaron Morrow Tony Bultinck organized the Golf Outing, which has been on hiatus for a few years. There were 38 golfers. Hillcrest CC was great. Nikki suggested it be scheduled before the teachers start school so that teachers can participate next year. Through fees and sponsorships, the Golf Outing brought in about $ Proposed changes to Constitution Tabled for now. New Business Welcome Father Todd and new members. The council welcomed Father Todd to the parish and to his first Christ the King Parish Council meeting.

2 Nikki Scott has been a parishioner for 4 years, is married to our PE teacher, Matt Scott. Nikki is involved in MOMS Ministry and the Parish Engagement Committee. Tom Shrack has been a parishioner for years; both his son and daughter are graduates of Christ the King School. Tom was on the advisory committee at BCHS, and when that was over, he wanted to get more involved here at Christ the King. Tom did serve last year, filling the final year of another member s term. Comments from Father Todd Father inquired about our senior population. Do we have ministries for this group? He is aware that we have a substantial number of parishioners in these age groups, and thinks we need to expand our ministries to serve this population. What initiatives can we make to minister to these faithful parishioners? Father noted that Pope Benedict said that all that we do should fall into one of these categories. These are the areas of priority for our parish. 1. Proclamation of the Gospel / Faith Formation. 2. Celebration of the Sacraments. 3. Acts of Charity. Father thanked the parish staff for helping him as he began his time here at Christ the King. Father Todd closed the meeting with the Lord s Prayer at 8:30 Christian Service Commission Ann Bagwell Gabriel Project Elaine would like to talk to the parish some weekend to recruit new Angels. She is also looking for additional storage space. Last year one of their clients died at an early age and her mom adopted her 4 children. We helped her mom with rent in June as she has been struggling with her own health and keeping up with the kids and work. She's doing better now. Another client was due the 17th but hasn't delivered yet. This is the second child we'll be helping her with. She just requested bottles and receiving blankets so hopefully we'll get those out to her this week. One of our clients was an IUPUI student. Her mother came from out east to help her after the birth and talked her into returning home for awhile. We have a new client due in September with twins. She recently found out she was having twins so she needed help with things for another child. We've given her a car seat, port-a-crib and stroller so far but we've a bit of a list of other things she needs as well- bottles, diapers, more clothes, blankets etc. Then we have one other client who we have helped with diapers, wipes, a hotel room one night and food. Ugly Quilts Currently the quilting group is in need of twin sized batting to complete the quilts that are in progress. Kay placed a request in the bulletin and plans to repeat the request each month until their supply is adequate. The group meetings begin in February to put the quilts together. The King's Crier The August issue should be delivered by now and we have started work on the October issue.

3 St. Vincent de Paul Debi Mitchell has proposed a joint venture with the Youth Group and has contacted Ann Collins. Baggies will be filled with toiletries to be distributed to Food Pantry clients. SVdP will provide the bags with an insert. The Youth Group will place the insert into the bags, distribute them at mass and then collect them the following mass. No date has been set for this project at this time, but Debi is considering during Advent. There were 3 more home visits in May. SVdP has changed referrals to reflect oner for each person instead of one for each address. The Pratt-Quigley Food Pantry is currently operating at a deficit, due to increases in food purchases. The pantry serves approximately 2,900 families each month. Boulevard Place Food Pantry changed some of their days/hours earlier this summer and now has implemented a policy change allowing clients to come 2 times per month rather than only once. Giving Tree Project No activity at this time Haiti Project (w St. Matthew) - Barb Gushrowski The Haiti Project is still in the planning stages. Our next meeting is Tuesday August 22 when we will be discussing our plans to raise money for school lunches for the children in Haiti. Once we have a plan, we will present it to the Parish Council and Fr. Todd for approval. Parish Life Greg Thatcher 8 th Grade Class Trip Fundraising Events Bingo October 7 at 6 pm in Tuohy Hall, run by the 8 th Grade parents Euchre Night - Would like to schedule this around Mardi Gras & Trivia night. This will not be a fundraiser. Mardi Gras The committee is meeting regularly. The planning process is on track for this event on February 10, 2018 Faith Formation - David Christoff Commissioner David Christoff (Welcome back) Vacation Bible School 2017 Was held in July with over 100+ children who attended. We always give each family a CD of the wonderful songs the kids learn in VBS. I m sure many of the parents have learned them by now. RCIA Will begin this year s sessions on Thursday, September 28 with a Meet and Greet/Overview at 6:30pm. Religious Education Classes Classes to begin Thursday, September 14 at 6:30pm. Two new RE Teachers this year, Kelli and Nathan Bromm. They recently became parishioners and are from the Jasper, IN area. Both grew up Catholic and have been married for just over 1 year. Kelli works for the Lilly company, and Nathan is a 5th gr. math teacher for a local charter school. Very outgoing and fun couple. Scripture Studies Will continue to take place on Monday nights, Wed. AM and Wed. nights. This Fall they will study The Prophets Marriage Prep Chris and Sheila Kaufman have retired as facilitators for Evenings for the Engaged. We appreciate the many years they have been involved and hosted EFE. By early next Spring, our remaining facilitators will have a game plan going forward. St. Joseph Men s Ministry Many of the men in our CTK groups will attend the Catholic Men s Conference on September 30th. For more info about this Conference go to or eventbrite.com

4 Respectfully Submitted, Cindy Flaten Parish Engagement Committee The Parish Engagement Committee would like to put on a Pints Night with a speaker at Bier Brewery October 8. The group will meet with Father, as all speakers need to be approved by the pastor. School Commission Kevin Kubacki The School has formed several committees to help with the marketing of the school. The School Commission is going through a strategic planning process for the future of the school. The plan should be mapped out during the first semester. Spiritual Life Kris Chaney Wake Service Ministry Dick Alley Nothing to report at this time. The ministry remains ready to serve when requested. Adult Choir/Children s Choir Melissa Buechler The Adult and Youth Choirs will begin rehearsals very soon, the youth in August and the adults in September. Servers Melissa Buechler We will begin training 12 new servers on Monday, August 21st. They should all be trained and ready to serve by mid-september. Adoration Robin Cooke/Chris McHugh This Ministry is under new leadership. Welcome, Robin and Chris! The Chapel Prayer and Adoration committee met with Father Todd in July to introduce ourselves and present some ideas re: prayer and adoration opportunities and the chapel space itself. The committee requests two (2) ministry minute opportunities this year the first before the start of Advent, regarding the opportunity of Sundays in Advent Adoration sign up, and then to present again before the season of Lent. We also discussed the possibility of a parish mission! The Gathering Tom Flaten Let us pray for our ministries to flourish with Christ as our vine, and His branches. The harvest is many, the workers few. Cindy and I experienced an outstanding Alaskan Cruise (Holland Lines - the Nieu Amsterdam) through Inspiration Cruises as guests of Amy Grant and guests - including our favorite artist - Matt Maher ("Your Grace is Enough"). We returned renewed in our ministries, and already see new branches sprouting. 8th grader, Alisa Grabhorn (student of Cathy Morris) and Senior Kelly Haas, both expressing interest in helping The Gathering continue a CTK music ministry that now spans more than 4 decades (OMG!) We sense the energy and enthusiasm of Fr. Todd and anticipate new growth under his leadership. But let us all call to mind, it's not about him, it's not about us - it's always about Jesus. Let us all accept His call to ministry, and support our brothers and sisters called to the same truth. Our Lady's Rosary Makers Vacant This outstanding ministry is in desperate need of new leadership.
