2 2 W E L C O M E T O S T. E L I Z A B E T H P A R I S H K A N S A S C I T Y, M O St. Elizabeth School and Parish has an outstanding Girl Scouts program available to all girls. Approximately 180 girls participate in individual troops from Kindergarten through 8th grade. Eighteen dedicated troop leaders and countless parent volunteers provide support to make our scouting program possible. St. Elizabeth's troops are a part of the largest organization for girls in the world. Girl Scouts was founded on March 12, 1912, and serves more than 2.3 million girls. The Girl Scout motto is building girls of courage, confidence, and character, to make the world a better place. Through activities in science and technology, business and economic literacy, and outdoor and environmental awareness, Girl Scouts provides opportunities for fun and friendship, while fostering leadership skills and building self-esteem. October Christskills: Stewardship Responsibility In addition to individual monthly troop meetings, our annual all-school scouting activities include an overnight campout, father-daughter dance, skating party, mother-daughter brunch, and Girl Scout Sunday Mass. The St. E's Girl Scouts and Leaders would like to thank our parish family for supporting our many activities. We feel very blessed to be part of such an amazing, caring community! To join or volunteer, contact St. Elizabeth s Girl Scout Troop Organizer, Susan Spence, or smsspence47@gmail.com. We remember in our prayers the loved ones of our parish family who serve in the military: Jeffery Dougherty, grandson of Connie Dougherty; Jacob Giwa, son of Kathleen Giwa; Major James Harris, son-inlaw of John and Kieran Cullinan; John Kelly, son of Joe Kelly Coly Bryant; Jim Buckley; James Campbell; Kathy Colborne; Connie Dougherty; Dorothy Edmiston, grandmother of Betsy Valentine; Chuck Gosselin; Flora Haug, daughter-in-law of Kathy Haug; Angela Hirte & John Hirte; Mary Komoroski, mother of Adrianne Aylward; Joseph Ludwikoski, son of PJ and Mary Ludwikoski; Louis Mandl, stepfather of Nancy Miller; Kathleen Matthews; Pearl Mayanja, daughter of Judith Mayanja; Barbara McAllister, mother of Pam Neenan; Mike McDonald, son of Ward McDonald; Butch Newell; Florence Pilsl; Daphne Price, mother-in-law of Diane Price; Ron Rode, father of Kay Kremer; Elizabeth Root; Mary Jayneen Ross, sister of Jim VanDyke; Katie Schultz; Vince Sheffer; Sue Steiner, aunt of Beth Collins; Melanie Tucci, niece of Mary Cary; Dierks Underwood, son of Chris & Jessie Underwood; Marie Wood, sister-in-law of Peggy VanDyke; Beverly Yancey, sister of Janet Garnett Please notify the parish office when a friend or loved one is in need of prayers, Eucharistic Minister, is in the hospital, or is serving in or returning home from the military. In an effort to increase awareness and understanding of our parish s finances, each week in this column we will provide updates and information regarding a variety of topics: Have you considered a planned gift to St. Elizabeth? We have all benefited from our fellow parishioners who have done just that. Such gifts have turned their generosity and love of St. Elizabeth into a lasting legacy. Planned gifts make it possible to share more than just income. After you have provided for your family and loved ones, consider: An outright gift now, especially assets that aren t being used, such as: A charitable distribution from your IRA Appreciated stock or other securities Assets that can be sold: real estate, tangible personal property, a paid-up life insurance policy Gifts in the future that cost you little or nothing during your lifetime. You can make a bequest to St. Elizabeth in your will or a trust, or name St. Elizabeth as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan. Have questions? Need more information? Please contact Heather Solis in the parish office.

3 27TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Dear Parishioners, I know we haven t provided much information lately in terms of building designs and renovations for Building Our Legacy. There is a lot happening though, and I am hopeful that in the very near future, we will have new renderings to share with you. I can tell you that what I ve seen thus far is very exciting and sets a transformative vision for the St. Elizabeth Campus. The new ECC will really integrate the church and rectory buildings in terms of architecture and materials, and provide a great new location on the west side of Main for the youngest students in our school. And the church designs are beautiful: a spacious gathering area at the 75th Street doors, a new choir area, access ramps inside and out, fresh paint and updated finishes all promise to transform our worship space. I understand the eagerness many of us feel. I hope to be sharing updates and new drawings very soon! I appreciate the conversations I ve had with many of you about the abuse issues our church continues to address. I share the frustration, embarrassment and impatience for a new way of being church. I believe that is already happening on the parish and diocesan levels, but the change will take a lot of practice and new ways of thinking from all of us. We all will be affected by practices that promote safer environments for our children: stricter protocols and procedures, increased security and constant reflection as individuals and as a community. We have come a long way, but we can always do even better! Pledged: $5.67 Million Total Collected: $1,850, Our partners at Straub Construction and Hollis+Miller have been hard at work refining the plans for the church renovations and the new ECC. This means discussing even the smallest details with teachers and parish staff. Recently, structural engineers climbed through the ceiling tiles in Seton Hall to determine what extra support we might need for an altar ramp in the church, and an upholsterer and interior designer sat in the pews to envision possible new coverings for them. Perhaps the most fun was a programming meeting with the school administration and facilities staff. The architects and interior designer met with them to "think like a little one" and appreciate how our youngest students experience school including everything from reading nooks to hand washing and the ever-popular carpool. I hope you are enjoying the arrival of fall. It always feels like such a blessing every year. The change in seasons is one of God s great gifts to us in beauty of creation. Peace, Fr. Greg You soon will receive your invitation to participate in the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA), which kicks off next weekend, October We have an opportunity to commit our support to diocesan programs and ministries that no one parish could provide on its own. Our theme, The community of believers was of one heart and mind Acts 4:32, appropriately recognizes our unity as the people of God to work together for the betterment of all. Our goal is 100% participation. No gift is too small. Please join our effort. In today s Gospel Jesus teaches us about the sacredness of marriage; a covenant that is a gift from God. Our relationships with our spouses, family, friends, coworkers, and those in our community of faith are all gifts from God. Jesus reminds us today that it is the hardened heart that damages or breaks up relationships. Good stewards understand the holiness of relationships and pray for the love, patience, understanding and kindness necessary to sustain those relationships. Take time out to prayerfully reflect on your relationships this week. Is your stewardship of these relationships as God intended? What relationships need to be healed and reconciled? ~International Catholic Stewardship Council Stewardship Shout-Outs: To all our Girl Scout leaders, volunteers, and parents who give countless hours toward the Girl Scout troops in St. Elizabeth Parish.
