1 ALL THINGS CONSIDERED CONGRATULATIONS! This Saturday s 4:30 Liturgy is the last of four First Eucharist celebrations. I would like to offer to both the children and the parents our sincere congratulations and best wishes. I would also like to sincerely thank our catechists for all their efforts to help our younger sisters and brothers understand what a wonderful and important gift Eucharist is to us all. Thanks!! MOTHERS DAY I would like to offer all the mothers among us my sincere best wishes on this Mother s Day weekend. And I would like to offer this prayer for you: O God, Creator of all, in a wonderful way you reveal the wonders of your goodness through the women you have blessed with motherhood. For before a mother carries her child in her womb, you have carried that same child in your heart and mind. As a mother cares and nurtures her child, so you care for and sustain us. And as a mother rejoices in the growth and maturity of her child, so you take delight in all of us as we advance along the way of salvation. We thank you, good and gracious God, for all that our mothers love teaches us about you! FRANCES XAVIER CABRINI On Easter Sunday afternoon, the third of the 14 icons we have commissioned for church arrived: Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini. In her childhood Frances Cabrini wanted to be a missionary, but the religious order she tried to enter refused her. So she worked as a teacher in an orphanage until 1880 when she founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. Not long afterward, Pope Leo XIII asked her to come to the United States to assist Italian immigrants find religious support for their Catholic faith in a foreign land. Despite numerous difficulties and obstacles, in 35 years she founded 67 different institutions dedicated to caring for the poor, the abandoned, the uneducated and the sick. As a child, she was frightened of water and was never able to overcome her fear. Yet, despite this, she crossed the Atlantic more than 30 times! She is the first US citizen to become a saint of the Church (July 7, 1946). She is the patron of immigrants. Mother Cabrini s icon is on the western wall. It depicts a very calm and peaceful woman, surrounded by swirling water. I hope you will like it! MANY THANKS Last Saturday was our annual Spring Clean Up of our parish grounds. Thanks to the Cub Scouts and their parents, the members of the Property Team and several others from the parish it was all done in record time! Thanks to all of you! Today s passage gives the last part of that sermon, and the reaction of those who heard it. 1 Peter 2: Today s passage from the First Letter of Peter was addressed to Christian slaves who were being treated harshly by their pagan masters. The author reminds them that they are members of a flock whose shepherd walked ahead of them in the face of insults and unjust treatment. John 10: 1-10 In today s Gospel, Jesus tells some bewildered Pharisees that he is the gate for the sheep. Apparently, it is not for these Pharisees to understand that for his disciples, Jesus is indeed the gate, an entrance, and a means of access to the father. A major point of John s Christology is that Jesus alone can bring people to God. Reflect: Who are the ones in your own household, or otherwise, for whom you are a shepherd? Fr. Dave Howell

3 Religious Formation News from Mary and Karen at Congratulations to all our families celebrating First Eucharist this weekend! It is so exciting to prepare all year, come together for the retreat, live through the insanity of the rehearsal and then to watch as parishioners, friends and relatives all come together for this important celebration that prepares our youth for a lifetime of sharing and living in the Eucharist! Thank you to not only our parents and catechists but to the parish as well for helping in the formation of our youth. I would like to thank our 2 nd grade team of Catechists and Aides led by Diane Neitzke this year! Dorothy Koprowicz, Megan Zapalski, John and Kelley Korch, Kay Pfaff, Sarah Allen, Sharon Micallef, Jacob Fugiel, Cheryl Comeau, Heather Hesano, Stephanie Darish, and Michelle Nied all worked tirelessly with our youth and families this year! Confirmation Retreat is August 12, 13 and 14 at Camp Faholo. This retreat is for all confirmation youth currently in 9 th grade. Registration for fall Formation Classes: will continue for fall classes in the office. Registration is on a first-come basis for class times. Make sure you register - regardless of your ability to pay. New Catechetical Ministers invited: We need catechists, aides, hall monitors and nursery help for next year. We also are in need of new members for our Formation Team. Over the last 11 years we have changed, adapted, organized into grade-level teams, learned to support each other, look into the individual learning needs of each child in our program, and much more. Please contact me for more information; we cannot do it with out you! Formation Team members are reminded of our meeting change: Tuesday, May 10, at my house. Directions have been ed to you. If you would like to attend and find out more about our team, please give me a call! Help wanted! I am in need of having pencils sharpened, markers checked and various things done in the formation wing. If you have some spare time let me know! Thanks. College graduation! Last Sunday, Mike, Kevin and I proudly attended Colleen s graduation from Adrian College! It seems just yesterday we took her there for the first time and left her in a dorm room! We are amazed the time went so fast and we now are the proud parents of yet another graduate! Take the time to spend moments with each of your children because before you know it they are all growed up! HAPPY MOTHER S DAY Youth News from Margaret youth1@saintmarymagdalen.org and Stasia at tkcsmom@comcast.net Calling all graduating high school students! Sign up on line via the parish website or in the Gathering Area for the Liturgy and breakfast in your honor Sunday, June 5 th all beginning at 9am. It is your time to shine and for us as a parish family to pray for your future success. Immediate family members are welcome but reservations are a must. Junior students are encouraged to help with the breakfast, as this time next year it will be you we celebrate. You can sign up for food donations and to volunteer to help that day at the same place the graduates sign up. Visit the parish website at If you have empty bottles and cans, feel free to drop them off at the barn out back by the paper recycle bin. Our youth are taking them back to earn money for the NCYC trip or for other events like Jamboree or our annual Winter Weekend Getaway. Thank you in advance for thinking of the youth. Happy Mother s Day! May your day be filled with much love, happiness and laughter. May you fondly remember your mom today with happy memories and heartfelt joy. Next Sunday, May 15 th, we will be having a car wash in the parking lot from 8am to 1pm. You can drop your car off with us dirty and when you come out of whichever Liturgy you might attend that day, your car will be clean and sparkly. Donations will be accepted for our trip in the fall to Indianapolis for the National Catholic Youth Conference. Last weekend, along with many other teens from around the county, we joined with Love INC and Shepherd of the Lakes to serve those in need and the elderly. It was a day well spent working and visiting with those we helped. What a relief for them to have things done around the house that they themselves cannot do. There is no Youth Group meeting this weekend, as it is Mother s Day. The evening is free to spend with family and to enjoy without having to leave the house. Next Sunday, we will gather together as usual from 7-9pm in the Youth Room. EDGE Would you use the gym in the summer months on Monday evenings? Please reply with your thoughts to youth1@saintmarymagdalen.org. It would be greatly appreciated.

6 Check it out! Do you sometimes finish a book, or find a new author and would like to share your impressions with others? Perhaps a book of prayer or daily readings inspires you. Do you wish, as I do, that more parishioners would find their way to the Library? Please, if you would like to reach out to other potential readers, write up a few sentences and send it to me at barbl@comcast.net. I would love to submit your thoughts to the bulletin. Don t be concerned about grammar or punctuation (I can edit); the thoughts are what counts. ST.VINCENT DE PAUL CLOTHING DRIVE Let s do some spring cleaning! The St. Vincent DePaul Clothing Drive will be held the weekend of May 21st-May 22nd. Please bring your donations of clean usable clothing, anytime during this weekend.
