Incarnation Lutheran Church Service of Holy Communion October 29, 2017; 10am Reformation Sunday TEMPLE TALK Jason Snyder PRELUDE The assembly stands and faces the processional cross. CONFESSION Blessed be the holy Trinity, the one who fashions us, the one who heals us, the one who reforms us again and again. Amen. Let us confess our sin, calling for God's transforming power. Silence for reflection and self-examination. Source of all life, we confess that we have not allowed your grace to set us free. We fear that we are not good enough. We hear your word of love freely given to us, yet we expect others to earn it. We turn the church inward, rather than moving it outward. Forgive us. Stir us. Reform us to be a church powered by love, willing to speak for what is right, act for what is just, and seek the healing of your whole creation. Amen. God hears our cry and sends the Spirit to change us and to empower our lives in the world. Our sins are forgiven, God s love is unconditional, and we are raised up as God s people who will always be made new, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Keep them steadfast in your word, protect and comfort them in times of trial, defend them against all enemies of the gospel, and bestow on the church your saving peace, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 3 FIRST READING: Jeremiah 31:31-34 WORD God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. 31 The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, Know the LORD, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. 4 SECOND READING: Romans 3: Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For no human being will be justified in his sight by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. 21 But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets, 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, 23 since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; 24 they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; 26 it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law. The word of the Lord. What do you mean by saying, You will be made free? 34 Jesus answered them, Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. 36 So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. OFFERTORY OFFERING PRAYER God of life, you give us these gifts of the earth, these resources of our life and our labor. Take them, offered in great thanksgiving, and use them to set a table that will heal the whole creation; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Light. Amen.

7 LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION Speak to us, O Lord, in the breaking of the bread, and make us one with you. COMMUNION All are welcome to join in communion, trusting that Christ promises to be truly present. Whole wheat communion bread is served. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. Red communion wine is served: the first cup is a common cup (for drinking from) and the second cup is for intinction (dipping the bread). Those unable to partake of both elements are assured that the Church affirms our Lord s full presence in, with, and under each element alone. Those who choose not to receive Communion are welcome to come forward to the altar railing for a blessing. When giving the bread and cup, the communion ministers say: The body of Christ, given for you. The blood of Christ, shed for you. Amen. 8 The Assembly Stands POST COMMUNION CANTICLE PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Holy and compassionate God, in bread and wine you give us gifts that form us to be humble and courageous. May your words come to life in our serving and in our witness, that we might speak a living voice of healing and justice to all the world, through Jesus Christ, our rock and our redeemer. Amen. SENDING God send us out to be Christ s body in the world, sharing what we have heard and seen. SENDING OF COMMUNION Gracious God, loving all your family with a mother s tender care: As you sent the angel to feed Elijah with heavenly bread, assist those who set forth to share your word and sacrament with those who are sick, homebound, and imprisoned. In your love and care, nourish and strengthen those who will receive this sacrament, and give us all the comfort of your abiding presence through the body and blood of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. 10 ANNOUNCEMENTS REFORMATION 500! It s finally here! We will observe the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation today with music, activities, and food! Worship - wear red! Red is the color of Reformation Sunday, so we dress for the occasion! Coffee Hour - eat red! Coffee Hour will feature our favorite red foods, from strawberries to Red Hots, so be sure to join us for fellowship in the parish hall after worship. 11:30 - see the films, hear the story! All ages will have the opportunity to watch a film on Martin Luther to discover (or rediscover!) his importance. Children will watch a short biography of Luther from the Torchlighter Series in the Youth Room and make a craft. Adults will view a portion of the new Luther movie and hold discussion. Christians from all over the world are descending on Wittenberg, Germany now as they gather for the actual observance of Luther s posting of the 95 Theses on October 31st, the date that marks the beginning of the Protestant Reformation, 500 years ago! Members traveling there from the South Carolina Synod will plant a tree in the Luther Garden joining with Lutherans from all over the globe who have planted trees there during the last year. Fun Fact: they will be carrying with them the red Reformation Bags created here at Incarnation. We Welcome New Members! Cheryl Carroll, Debbie Poston, Chris Ricken, and William Gieser are officially joining the Incarnation family today and we are so glad to have them and their extended families with us! Many of you know RN Cheryl Carroll who has been attending for almost a year. She is bouncing back from some orthopedic surgery and now has her parents living with her and husband John! Debbie and Chris come to us from Lexington and have been attending St. James in Batesburg. Debbie is an assistant professor at Newberry College who enjoys music (she sings and plays!) and is looking forward to fellowship opportunities at ILC. Chris is the Practice Manager for a family medicine practice in Winnsboro and has been active in choir and handbells she is looking forward to fellowship, new friends and maybe some ministry team work. Both Debbie and Chris learned about ILC through Mary Crosby thanks Mary! William also lives in Lexington and is a geotechnical engineer. He originally hails from Spartanburg and we are thankful to have him here! Welcome to all. All Saints Sunday, November 5 th. The feast day occurs every year on November 1 st. Worshippers are invited to bring a picture of someone they have loved and lost to place on the Table of Remembrance by the pulpit. We will also remember our congregational members and friends who have died since All Saints Day last year. Peace to all their memories. Stewardship Campaign: We are called by scripture to share our time, talent and treasure to support God's work in the world. Our stewardship theme this year is 10 Stewardship Principles. These principles are daily reminders of how we are to give of ourselves and share our gifts. We look forward to sharing more on these principles, as well as tools to assist you in determining your financial support of Incarnation in the coming year. As your Council embarks on the budget process, we are asking all members to complete a pledge card, included in today s bulletin, to help as we plan for Your pledge is crucial for our success, thank you in advance for your participation! Prime Rib Dinner Night will be Thursday, November 16 th beginning at 6:30p in the parish hall. This Men in Mission event is open to all but is a ticketed dinner, so mark your calendars! Tickets available soon! Oktoberfest t-shirts and heart buttons/necklaces If you got a tee or heart jewelry and haven t yet paid, please be sure to leave a check (marked for Ofest) in the offering.
