Books Wanted - James Tokorsa, who requested books for his new church starting up in Lae, Papua New Guinea. He is currently living in Lae City, Morobe Province. He is one of the Sabbath keepers and just recently their Sabbath Ministry officially opened a new church facility for the local community. (continued on page 7) See page 7 for the entire booklist. 4 ~ Keep The Faith Ministries ~ KENYA ATTEMPTING TO RESTRICT RELIGION Kenya s evangelical churches have condemned government plans to make it tougher for religious bodies and clerics from all faiths to operate. The Evangelical Alliance of Kenya says the government is aiming to stop the growth of evangelical churches The proposals would require all religious bodies to register, for preachers to have police clearance, and for institutions to submit their statements of faith to a government-backed examination. Other proposals include 1). All preachers would have to undergo theological training at a reputable seminary, 2) The Ethics and Anti-Corruption commission will have to certify that clergy are not corrupt, and 3), Foreign pastors will need a work permit, and a recommendation from their government. While Christians form the majority in Kenya, the main body of the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims also opposed the proposals on the basis of freedom of worship. The proposals amount to a clampdown on religious institutions the council said. Recently, Kenya s Communications Authority published new broadcasting regulations, which bans preachers from soliciting money on air. Horrible things are happening in the church today. There is a lot of commercialisation of the gospel with this prosperity gospel, said the Anglican Church of Kenya, Bishop Beneah Salah. He said the church was not in a healthy state. Perhaps God is using the state to punish the church as he did in the past, where he used kings or nations to discipline the church, he added. The Catholic Church to which President Uhuru Kenyatta belongs has not yet commented on the proposals. The government will hold public consultations before drafting legislation. Note that all the proposals would essentially mean that all church bodies and institutions would have to be involved and in harmony with the ecumenical movement. The proposals would not affect the Catholic Church, which is the largest body of Christians in Kenya, while it would limit minority churches in what they would do. 4

5 The government s proposals would also target Muslim extremists. Again, Muslim extremists are engaged to assist as an excuse to limit all religious minorities. Evangelicals are mobilizing opposition to the proposals. The proposals in Kenya are just one more way, in one more country, in which freedom of religion is under assault. January 11, 2016 Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic Libna Stevens/ IAD ~ Adventist News Network ~ The Seventh-day Adventist Church s radio station was granted a national award by the government of the Dominican Republic last month for its positive contributions to health on the island. The National Medical Award, a recognition granted once a year to doctors and institutions who perform positive contributions to society, was the first the church s Radio Amanecer received for its daily program called Let s Restore the Family. 6 society, said Dr. Sergio Solís Taveras, National Medical Award director as he presented the award. The one-hour daily morning segment consists of a panel of family therapists who speak on issues affecting the modern family and take live questions on the telephone and social media comments and concerns from listeners. The program, which is broadcast Monday through Friday from 9-10 a.m., has been running for 10 years. Miqueas Fortunato, director of Radio Amenecer, says the recognition means a lot to the station and the church. God wants to see families restored and the fact that Radio Amanecer has been recognized by a scientific community like this commits us to continue spreading the principles upon which God designed for the family, Fortunato says. Radio Amanecer has been operating through the radio waves for 33 years on the island reaching 85 percent of the country, with 7.9 million estimated listeners, says Fortunato. 8 ~ Our Church Website ~ Church Website The church website is currently undergoing a total rebuild and facelift this year. Over the coming moths all the old information will be transferred to the new site which has a brighter look and feel. Navigation through the pages will be easier to use with the new menu system. The recipe club page will also be getting a new menu system for easier use by implementing a drop-down menu which should speed up the navigation and loading process. The new web address can be viewed at and is still in the update process, however, still at the forefront is our old site standing firm. Please give any suggestions and or feedback to Shaun. My Mobile Adventist App Our mobile app that was created primarily for Sabbath school resources is by the grace of God being implemented across the globe. We currently have 3,386 users from around the world with requests for versions in Spanish and French, but as we don t have people with time to translate daily, these will not be implemented at this time. If you wish to help translate the app, please see Shaun, the app developer. My Mobile Adventist is available free from Google Play, Apple itunes, AppZoom, and Amazon stores. An interactive sample of the app is available on our website. Facebook Our Facebook page has a steady amount of visitors with 414 likes to date. The number has almost doubled over the last twelve months. The Recipe Club page now has 73 online members with 6 added over the last week. Recipes are posted monthly with photos as well. If you would like to contribute to the Facebook or recipe Club pages, please see Shaun, our church webmaster. Business Cards On the table in the foyer are several church business cards promoting the church website and mobile app. Please feel free to take a few and distribute them. This will let help the public know that we are accessible via the internet as well. 8

9 ~ From the Spirit of Prophecy - Think About: ~ A Call To Stand Apart by (E.G. White) How To Have Faith (chapter 5, pp ) It is peace that you need Heaven s forgiveness and peace and love in the soul. Money cannot buy it, intellect cannot procure it, wisdom cannot attain to it; you can never hope, by your own efforts, to secure it. But God offers it to you as a gift, without money and without price. Isaiah 55:1. It is yours if you will but reach out your hand and grasp it. The Lord says, Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. Isaiah 1:18. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you. Ezekiel 36:26. {CSA 29.3} You have confessed your sins, and in heart put them away. You have resolved to give yourself to God. Now go to Him, and ask that He will wash away your sins and give you a new heart. Then believe that He does this because He has promised. {CSA 29.4} This is the lesson which Jesus taught while He was on earth, that the gift which God promises us, we must believe we do receive, and it is ours. Jesus healed the people of their diseases when they had faith in His power; He helped them in the things which they could see, thus inspiring them with confidence in Him concerning things which they could not see leading them to believe in His power to forgive sins.... {CSA 30.1} Let us turn to the story of the paralytic at Bethesda. The poor sufferer was helpless; he had not used his limbs for thirty-eight years. Yet Jesus bade him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. The sick man might have said, Lord, if Thou wilt make me whole, I will obey Thy word. But, no, he believed Christ s word, believed that he was made whole, and he made the effort at once; he willed to walk, and he did walk. He acted on the word of Christ, and God gave the power. He was made whole. {CSA 30.2} In like manner you are a sinner. You cannot atone for your past sins; you cannot change your heart and make yourself holy. But God promises to do all this for you through Christ. You believe that promise. You confess your sins and give yourself to God. You will to serve Him. Just as surely as you do this, God will fulfill His word to you. If you believe the promise, believe that you are forgiven and cleansed, God supplies the fact; you are made whole, just as Christ gave the paralytic power to walk when the man believed that he was healed. It is so if you believe it. {CSA 30.3} 9

11 January 19th ~ Weekly Devotional ~ The Consequences Of Sin And Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. Genesis 3:8 Adam did not consider all the consequences resulting from his disobedience. He did not set his mind in defiance against God, nor did he in any way speak against God; he simply went directly contrary to His express command. And how many today are doing the very same thing, and their guilt is of much greater magnitude because they have the example of Adam s experience in disobedience, and its terrible results, to warn them of the consequences of transgressing the law of God. So they have clear light upon this subject, and no excuse for their guilt in denying and disobeying God s authority.... Adam yielded to temptation, and as we have the matter of sin and its consequences laid so distinctly before us, we can read from cause to effect and see the greatness of the act is not that which constitutes sin; but the disobedience of God s expressed will, which is a virtual denial of God, refusing the laws of His government....the law of self is erected, human will is made supreme, and when the high and holy will of God is presented to be obeyed, respected, and honored, the human will wants its own way, to do its own promptings, and there is a controversy between the human agent and the Divine. The fall of our first parents broke the golden chain of implicit obedience of the human will to the Divine. Obedience has no longer been deemed an absolute necessity. The human agents follow their own imaginations, which the Lord said of the inhabitants of the old world were evil and that continually. The Lord Jesus declares, I have kept my Father s commandments. How? As a man. Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. To the accusations of the Jews He stood forth in His pure, virtuous, holy character and challenged them, Which of you convinceth me of sin?... We are not to serve God as if we were not human, but we are to serve Him in the nature we have, that has been redeemed by the Son of God; through the righteousness of Christ we shall stand pardoned before God, and as though we had never sinned. We will never gain strength in considering what we might do if we were angels. We are to turn in faith to Jesus Christ, and show our love to God through obedience to His commands.
