Hatred, anger and malice rule the hearts of men while their eyes pursue the lusts and desires of the living, dying world around them. 4 ~ Seventh-day Adventist Church ~ THE MARRIAGE DEBATE AND RELIGIOUS LIBERTY Join The Conversation Over the past weeks we have attempted to argue for the long-standing biblical definition of marriage. As a Church, we need to have this conversation. We need to listen and we need to talk and ultimately we need to uphold a Christ-centred, graceoriented, biblical perspective of marriage. While doing this, we need to love and respect those who hold different points of view. Here are some discussion points: Why is marriage important? How can we strengthen and grow healthy marriages in the face of high rates of divorce, breakdown and abuse? Why is this debate not about discrimination? How can we best explain our complete message to the LGBTIQ community? What impact might a redefinition of marriage have on children and families? In what ways might legal recognition of same-sex marriage impact our Church community? If you have any questions or would like more information about the Seventh-day Adventist Church s views on marriage or would you like to talk or do you need support? Please speak to your local church pastor for a referral to a local Christianbased counselling agency in your area. 4
~ Seventh-day Adventist Church ~ ADVENTIST CHURCH LAUNCHES NEW MISSION WEBSITE VividFaith aims to make it easier to connect missionaries with service opportunities Oct 10, 2017 Silver Spring, Maryland, United States ANN Staff/Fylvia Fowler Kline The Seventh-day Adventist Church announced a new website and app for missions, during the 2017 Annual Council meetings. Expected to launch August 2018, VividFaith will be a virtual community where those who want to serve the Church can find places around the world to serve and then be matched with the opportunities for which they are best suited. VividFaith will be unique from other job-search websites as it will allow organizations to do more than create and post service opportunities. Organizations will be able to filter through interested applicants and be notified of interested applicants. They will also be able to share unique details about their region and offer resources and tools for those applying. Similarly, those interested in serving will no longer need to contact individual organizations. VividFaith will be a one-stop place where they can search for all the service opportunities offered by the Adventist Church and other supporting ministries. VividFaith will be a unique place to find or post mission opportunities, similar to a global searchable index, says Italo Osorio, architect of VividFaith. Based on profile information, VividFaith will send notifications when a mission opportunity matches the interests of a member. Or the moment an organization adds a mission 5
opportunity, VividFaith will immediately tell the number of possible candidates fitting the request. The practice and culture of missions and service has been a part of the fabric of the Seventh-day Adventist Church since 1874 when John Nevins Andrews left the United States for Europe. In those early days, managing resources, people and logistics of international service began as a small centralized operation at the Adventist Church World Headquarters. Today, service opportunities are not just through one office. They are offered by many departments and entities within the Adventist Church, by Adventist-owned entities outside of the General Conference, like ADRA and independent ministries run by Adventist lay ministries, like Maranatha International. As of June 2017, Seventh-day Adventist Christians make up only 0.27% of the world s population, leaving billions who have never heard of the Seventh-day Adventist Church or its life-changing message. Despite the increase in service opportunities and the number of people ready to serve, the two groups are currently not connecting as much as they could. VividFaith will work to streamline the process so that everyone who wants to serve has the opportunity. VividFaith will be open to anyone, Adventist or non-adventist, who has the desire to do ministry with the Adventist Church, says Osorio. Members will discover a place to find mission opportunities and/or create social interaction with other people engaged in mission. Future versions of VividFaith will include resources for those serving and a social media platform where family and friends can support those abroad. On their temporary website, vividfaith.com, you can sign up to receive updates on the developments of VividFaith. 6

~ From the Spirit of Prophecy ~ Auto-Intoxication, or Self-Poisoning [ From the book Healthful Living Chapter 30 (1897, 1898) by (E.G. White) ] 886. The more active the circulation, the more free will be the blood from obstructions and impurities. -- H. R. {HL 206.1} Toxins Generated 887. Impurities are constantly and imperceptibly passing from the body through the pores, and if the skin is not kept in a healthy condition, the system is burdened with impure matter. If the garments worn are not frequently cleansed from these impurities, the pores of the skin absorb again the waste matter thrown off. The impurities of the body, if not allowed to escape, are taken back into the blood, and forced upon the internal organs. Nature, to relieve herself of poisonous impurities, makes an effort to free the system, which effort produces fevers and what is termed disease.-- H. to L., Chap. 4, p. 60. {HL 206.2} 888. Many families suffer with sore throat, and lung diseases, and liver complaints, brought upon them by their own course of action.... They keep their windows and doors closed, fearing they will take cold if there is a crevice open to let in the air. They breathe the same air over and over until it becomes impregnated with the poisonous impurities and waste matter thrown off from their bodies through the lungs and the pores of the skin. These impurities are conveyed to the blood through the inhalations of the lungs.-- H. to L., Chap. 4, p. 63. {HL 206.3} 889. Many are made sick by the indulgence of appetite.... So many varieties are introduced into the stomach that fermentation is the result. This condition brings on acute disease, and death frequently follows.-- U. T., Aug. 25, {HL 207.1} 890. If physical exercise were combined with mental exertion, the blood would be quickened in its circulation, the action of the heart would be more perfect, impure matter would be thrown off, and new life and vigour would be experienced in every part of the body.... They closely apply their minds to books, and eat the allowance of a labouring man. Under such habits some grow corpulent, because the system is clogged. Others become lean, feeble, and weak, because their vital powers are exhausted in throwing off the excess of food; the liver becomes burdened and unable to throw off the impurities in the blood, and sickness is the result.-- T., V. III, p {HL 207.2} Defective Elimination 891. The studied habit of shunning the air and avoiding exercise closes the pores,... making it impossible to throw off impurities through that channel. The burden of labour is thrown upon the liver, lungs, kidneys, etc., and these internal organs are compelled to do the work of the skin. Thus persons bring diseases upon themselves by their wrong habits.-- T., V. II, p {HL 207.3} 10
~ Adventist News Network ~ MISSION-MINDED PHYSICIAN UNEXPECTEDLY DELIVERS BABY AT WORLD CHURCH HEADQUARTERS She had been praying about reaching the city after hearing an Annual Council sermon. Oct 13, 2017 Andrew McChesney, Adventist Mission Silver Spring, Maryland, United States A physician praying to be used by God after hearing an Annual Council sermon about mission work in the cities unexpectedly delivered a baby in the parking lot of the Seventh-day Adventist world church s U.S. headquarters. Dr. Yvette C. Ross Hebron delivered a healthy baby boy in the car of the parents, who had been rushing to the hospital but pulled into the church s parking lot in Silver Spring, Maryland, after getting lost shortly before 10 a.m. on Oct. 12. Hebron said she believed God arranged the events. The most wonderful opportunity in response to our prayers was orchestrated by the Master, she said. Hebron began praying about how to do more to serve God after hearing Adventist Church president Ted N.C. Wilson preach to several hundred church leaders during the Annual Council business meetings at the church s General Conference headquarters on Oct. 7. The physician and her husband, Harold, members of the Emmanuel Brinklow Seventh-day Adventist Church in Ashton, Maryland, had been driving to church and, seeing a full parking lot at church headquarters, stopped to attend that worship service instead. 11
As the service progressed, it was quite evident that we were in the right place for this particular Sabbath and God had led us there for a purpose, Hebron said. Wilson, in a sermon titled Work the Cities Without Delay, appealed for a renewed effort to reach people in the cities and spoke of the need for physicians and other health-care professionals to reach city residents. Read Adventists Urged to Intensify Work in the Cities Five days after the sermon, Hebron and her husband were driving past church headquarters when they saw a man pull into the parking lot, frantically jump from his car, and run around it. Rolling down the window, she heard him crying and screaming, The baby is coming! Then she heard the screams of the expectant mother in the car. My husband and I immediately pulled into the driveway, she said. Moments later, the baby was born. As Harold Hebron telephoned the paramedics, the new father removed his shoelaces from his tennis shoes and found a pair of scissors in the car. Following Hebron s directions, he tied off the umbilical cord and cut it. Yvette Hebron wrapped the baby in a blanket from her car and made sure that he was comfortable and breathing fine. General Conference security arrived and fostered a calm environment. After a short time, the paramedics took a healthy and stable mother and baby to the hospital. Later that day, Hebron visited the mother in the hospital and again held the baby in her arms. The mother excitedly told the nurses that God sent an angel to help her in the parking lot. I don t know where she came from, the mother said. I just looked up, and she was there. The new parents have voiced a desire to visit the General Conference headquarters to learn more about the Adventist faith. In an interview, Wilson expressed amazement at God s manner in opening ways for people with willing hearts to serve. God provides even the most interesting circumstances like an emergency birth to magnify His name and let committed people participate in proclaiming the three 12
angels messages through their personal witness, he said. The three angels messages, found in Revelation 14, are a call to proclaim the soon coming of Jesus to the world. What a blessing that many of those who heard the appeal on Sabbath about Mission to the Cities have taken this biblical and Spirit of Prophecy challenge to heart, he said. I praise God for humble people who love Christ with all their hearts and are willing to be used by Him in the great cities of the world even in the General Conference parking lot! May we all be faithful to following the leading of the Holy Spirit as we minister to people as Jesus did and through His power. Hebron said she has no doubt that what happened in the parking lot was an answer to prayer. My husband and I contribute all to God's plan, she said. 13

October 21st What You Think, You are ~ Weekly Devotional ~ Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5) More precious than the golden wedge of Ophir is the power of right thought. We need to place a high value upon the right control of our thoughts; for such control prepares us to labor for the Master. It is necessary for our peace and happiness in this life that our thoughts center in Christ. As a man thinketh, so is he. The merciful shall find mercy, and the pure in heart shall see God. Every impure thought defiles the soul, impairs the moral sense, and tends to obliterate the impressions of the Holy Spirit. It dims the spiritual vision, so that men cannot behold God. The Lord may and does forgive the repenting sinner; but though forgiven, the soul is marred. All impurity of speech and thought must be shunned by him who would have clear discernment of spiritual truth. Evil thoughts destroy the soul. The converting power of God changes the heart, refining and purifying the thoughts. Unless a determined effort is made to keep the thoughts centered on Christ, grace cannot reveal itself in the life. The mind must engage in the spiritual warfare. Every thought must be brought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. All the habits must be brought under God's control. We need a constant sense of the ennobling power of pure thoughts and the damaging influence of evil thoughts. Let us place our thoughts upon holy things. Let them be pure and true; for the only security for any soul is right thinking. We are to use every means that God has placed within our reach for the government and cultivation of our thoughts. We are to bring our minds into harmony with Christ's mind. His truth will sanctify us, body, soul, and spirit, and we shall be enabled to rise above temptation. "The prince of this world cometh," said Jesus, "and hath nothing in me." There was in Him nothing that responded to Satan's sophistry. He did not consent to sin. Not even by a thought did He yield to temptation. So may it be with us. Christ's humanity was united with divinity; He was fitted for the conflict by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.... So long as we are united to Him by faith, sin has no more dominion over us. God reaches for the hand of faith in us to direct it to lay fast hold upon the divinity of Christ, that we may attain to perfection of character.... Every promise in God's Word is ours. "By every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God" are we to live.... Look not to circumstances or to the weakness of self, but to the power of the Word. All its strength is yours.--signs of the Times, Aug. 23, (Reflecting Christ Ellen G White - page 308) 15
