2 ~ Upcoming Dates & Announcements ~ Welcome - We welcome Peter Tung to the pulpit today and his wife Lynette for Sabbath praise and worship. May God bless you and lead you in His truth always. Next Prayer Meeting - Wednesday, May 4th at 5pm Please join us each fortnight for prayer and a short Bible study. Let s always keep the communication channels to heaven open. Prayer Request - Please pray especially for T. C. Brown. He has had difficult surgery and needs our prayers for recovery, also Elder Norman Tyack s family for comfort and peace. Norman passed away Tuesday morning. Alex Buckler s has had his surgery and is recovering. Please pray for his healing too. Please continue to pray for Marilyn McDonald, John Tyack, Suzi, Roger Pearce, Peter Tyzack and family, Maria and John Franjic, Simon Novak, Trevor and the staff from the fish shop, Shaun, his children and his grandchildren, the Recipe Club, our Pastor, the church and the young people in our town. Please remember to give thanks to God for our answered and unanswered prayers as well. BBQ Lunch - On Monday April 25th, there will be a barbeque lunch at Jay and Therese Neff s farm in Digby. Recipe Club - This Tuesday evening, April 26th at 7pm, is our next recipe club meeting for This month s speaker and demonstrator will be Sibilla Johnson. See Lynette for bookings and we hope to see you there. C.A.R.E. Group - The next C.A.R.E. Group meeting will be Friday April 29th. See page 9 and Krystal for address and further details. Garage Sale - On Sunday May 1st, there will be a garage sale to raise funds for ADRA at the Tung's residence, 30 Milton Street starting at 9am. Please start collecting any suitable items that you wish to donate for this sale. They need to be marked with a price tag, and ready to be dropped off on the day.. If you have any queries about denotations for the sale, please see Elder Peter Tung or Krystal Morris. Business Meeting - There will be a church business meeting on May 4th at 6pm following the prayer meeting. Please have your agendas in by April 27th. The selection of the nominating committee for 2016/2017 will be included in this meeting. All local church members are requested to attend where possible. Visitors Day - There will be a Visitors' day on Sabbath May 14th. Please remember this date so you can invite people along for this special Sabbath. 2

4 ~ Adventist News Network ~ POWERFUL EARTHQUAKE IN ECUADOR KILLS 413, INJURES MORE THAN 2,500 Church members, humanitarians gather donations to assist those affected by the tragedy. April 19, 2016 Pedernales, Ecuador Andrew McChesney, news editor, Adventist Review/ ADRA International Staff/ ANN Staff 4 The South American country of Ecuador has declared a state of emergency after the 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck at 6:58 p.m. Saturday, killing at least 413 people and injuring more than 2,500. The earthquake caused widespread destruction in the country, including four local Adventist Churches. [Photo: ADRA Ecuador] Pedernales, a city of about 46,000 people located 165 miles (270 kilometers) west of the capital, Quito, was flattened by the earthquake, its mayor said. The 600 local church members set up donation centers to collect food and clothing for those affected by the earthquake. Church members were working closely with the ADRA, said Felipe Lemos, director of the press office for the Adventist Church s South American Division, whose territory includes Ecuador. Adventist members in Pedernales are establishing centers to collect food and clothing in every district for distribution to places in need, Lemos said. Let s remember the people of Ecuador in prayer. Adventist humanitarians respond On Monday the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) distributed food to 239 people in temporary camps and 87 people in shelters. ADRA volunteers were even able to assist a woman who gave birth in the street, as well as assisting her wounded relatives. All of these activities were carried out in coordination with Ecuador s MIES

5 (Ministry of Economic and Social inclusion). ADRA volunteers in the area of Pedernales and 30 volunteers from Santo Domingo and Quito, are working on an initial rapid needs assessment in order to better understand the situation on the ground and continue to provide the most relevant humanitarian aid. ADRA is also working to set up a water purification unit in Pedernales to better serve the affected population with the supply of drinking water. Additional emergency response team members from the global ADRA network are travelling to support the team in Ecuador. Damaged churches in Pedernales Church members were meeting in one of the churches, the Palmitas Seventh-day Adventist Church in the coastal city of Pedernales, when the earthquake rocked the region, said Giovanny Izquierdo, president of Adventist Church in Ecuador. Church members were in the church at the exact moment when the earthquake occurred and they immediately fled outside, Izquierdo said in a WhatsApp text message. The church building collapsed shortly afterward. The church has 80 members. Many buildings have fallen and the Palmitas church is completely destroyed, the church s pastor, Washington Guaranga, said in a separate WhatsApp message. The WhatsApp messages were sent to Samuel Saito, director of the Adventist Church-operated Nuevo Tiempo (Hope Channel) radio network in Ecuador, and viewed by the Adventist Review. We haven t experience the loss of any church members in the middle of this tragedy, only material damages, Izquierdo said earlier on Twitter. Thank you for praying for us. Two of the other three churches destroyed in the earthquake were the Central Adventist Church, also in Pedernales, and the church in the town of Maria Luiza. Prayers for Ecuador, Japan and Myanmar Ted N.C. Wilson, president of the Adventist world church, also called for prayers for the relief and assistance efforts of the people of Ecuador. 5

6 Remember the Ecuador Union and our local fields as they help with the recovery process during the aftermath of the traumatic and deadly event, he said on his Facebook page. Wilson also asked church members to pray for the people of Japan and Myanmar, two countries that also suffered earthquakes recently. Please also keep the people of Japan and Myanmar in your prayers as they have suffered earthquakes with tragic loss of life, Wilson said. As we come to the end of time, Jesus wants to use us as a positive influence in all types of difficult situations so Christ s love can be seen through us. ~ Keep The Faith Ministries ~ UNITED NATIONS WANTS CONTROL OF THE WORLD S OCEANS In the wake of the papal-inspired United Nations agreement on the environment, the United Nations has launched a far-reaching initiative that could give the UN control over the biological resources of the high seas, which is all the waters that lie outside of national territories and economic zones. It involves multi-trillion-dollar issues, including the protection of biological diversity, major impact assessments and projects like the development of marine genetic resources. Overall, the hoped-for treaty will cover two-thirds of the oceans, almost half the planet, said Lisa Speer, a senior official of the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC). The foundation for the treaty, which they hope to have drafted, by the end of 2017, is based on the problems related to over-fishing, pollution, the drainage of nutrients and other substances from the surrounding lands, the disturbance of underwater sea beds, etc. Some see the treaty as the saltwater equivalent of the Paris Agreement on climate change a global, permanent and legally-binding deal for the management of Earth s last frontier One of the things we are looking at is how marine genetic resources will be conserved, sustainably used, and how the dividends will be shared, said Speer. The [Obama] Administration is deeply involved in the negotiations, as are some of 6

7 the world s most powerful environmental organizations. The United States strongly supports conservation and sustainable use of the ocean and its resources, both within and beyond national jurisdiction, a State Department official told Fox News. That includes increased cooperation and coordination among states, international bodies, and relevant stakeholders to achieve better conservation and management of high seas resources. Environmentalism is one of the key principles that papal Rome uses to unite the world under her moral guidance. The United Nations will be the global coordinator of papal plans and objectives. John 20:1-17. {CSA 41.4} The night of the first day of the week had worn slowly away. The darkest hour, just before daybreak, had come. Christ was still a prisoner in His narrow tomb. The great stone was in its place; the Roman seal was unbroken; the Roman guards were keeping their watch.... {CSA 41.5} And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven.... Matthew 27: {CSA 41.8} This was He who had been laid in Joseph s new tomb. The decree of heaven had loosed the captive. Mountains piled upon mountains over His sepulchre could not have prevented Him from coming forth. {CSA 41.9} At sight of the angels and the glorified Saviour the Roman guard had fainted and become as dead men. When the heavenly train was hidden from their view, they arose to their feet, and as quickly as their trembling limbs could carry them, made their way to the gate of the garden. {CSA 41.10} 42 ~ From the Spirit of Prophecy - Think About: ~ Staggering like drunken men, they hurried on to the city, telling those whom they 8

9 met the wonderful news. They were making their way to Pilate, but their report had been carried to the Jewish authorities, and the chief priests and rulers sent for them to be brought first into their presence. {CSA 42.1} A strange appearance those soldiers presented. Trembling with fear, their faces colourless, they bore testimony to the resurrection of Christ. The soldiers told all, just as they had seen it; they had not had time to think or speak anything but the truth.... {CSA 42.2} We are not just another small group meeting weekly to read the bible and hang out together - we are a C.A.R.E. 11 ~ Weekly Devotional ~ Speak No Words Of Unbelief We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it. Numbers 13:27 Thus far [the spies ] words had been spoken in faith; but see what followed. After describing the beauty and fertility of the land, all but two of the spies enlarged upon the difficulties and dangers that lay before the Israelites should they undertake the conquest of Canaan.... Their unbelief cast a gloomy shadow over the congregation. A wail of agony arose and mingled with the confused murmur of voices. Caleb comprehended the situation and did all in his power to counteract the evil influence of his unfaithful associates. He did not contradict what had been said. The walls were high and the Canaanites strong. But God had promised the land to Israel. Let us go up at once, and possess it, urged Caleb, for we are well able to overcome it. But the ten, interrupting him, pictured the obstacles in darker colours than at first. We be not able to go up against the people, they declared, for they are stronger than we.... And all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. It is right that human beings should be considered as grasshoppers when compared with the Lord God of Israel. But it showed a lack of faith for the spies to speak of the Israelites thus in comparison with the people they had seen in Canaan. The children of Israel had on their side the mighty powers of heaven. The One who, enshrouded in the pillar of cloud, had led them through the wilderness was fighting for them. They had seen His power displayed at the Red Sea, when at His word the waters parted, leaving a plain path for them through the sea. Nevertheless, when the spies saw the walled cities in the Promised Land, they allowed unbelief to enter their hearts, and they returned to the congregation with a faithless report.... This shows us to what desperation unbelief will bring people. My brethren and sisters, when thoughts of unbelief and distrust come to you, remember that silence is eloquence. Speak no words of unbelief, for such words are as seeds that will spring up and bear fruit. There is among us altogether too much talking and too little praying. We think and speak of the difficulties that exist, and forget to trust the Lord. God s Spirit would work mightily in behalf of His people if we would give Him opportunity.
