All are welcome for an afternoon of praise and fellowship. 13th Sabbath - Sabbath March 26th is the 13th Sabbath and the end of the quarter. The offerings for this Sabbath are going to the Southern American Division. Daylight Savings - On Sunday April 3rd, daylight savings ends. Please turn your clocks back by one hour at 3am or before you go to bed. Garage Sale - On Sunday May 1st, there will be a garage sale to raise funds for ADRA. If you have anything you would like to donate to the sale, please see Peter Tung or Krystal for donation point and more information. 4 ~ Keep The Faith Ministries ~ AND NOW INSTAGRAM WONDERS AFTER On yet another Friday audience with a tech executive, Pope Francis met with the CEO and co-founder of Instagram, Kevin Systrom at the Vatican s Apostolic Palace. The audience is the latest move by Instagram to become the dominant platform for visual communication. Instagram said that images can unite people across borders, cultures, and generations, in a statement ahead of the meeting. Today I had the honor of meeting Pope Francis, Systrom wrote. It was by far one of the most memorable experiences of my life! Owned by Facebook, Instagram has built up teams of curators to boost the social sharing platform s discovery features. We believe you can see the world happening in real time through Instagram, Systrom said. Instagram is attempting to make all major world events, particularly the most significant ones, discoverable and accessible on Instagram. Systrom gave the pope a curated book of 10 hand-picked Instagram images. It captured images from the Nepalese earthquake, the continuing migration of refugees into Europe from the Middle East, photographs from inside North Korea, climate change in the arctic and from last year s Baltimore protests. Images are powerful motivators. If the pope can harness the power of Instagram to 4

5 promote the papal message, while at the same time limit negative exposure of the Vatican s dark side, the Papacy will have gained a powerful tool in promoting itself as the moral guide of the world. And Pope Francis is already developing an Instagram presence. After a trial run of several months, Catholic News Service said, the Vatican Instagram is set to become one of News.va s main platforms for social media communication. And while he only has a very few followers on Instagram at the moment, his twitter account is already crushing it on Twitter, beating out U.S. President Obama as the most influential world leader, according to a July Twiplomacy study. handle boasts 3,048,148 followers, and that s just on the English-language account. The Vatican s Instagram account however is to become the next stage of Vatican activity on social media with inspiring scenes objects, or (signs) used as metaphors, or persons sharing with us the joy of being Christians, said the Vatican s Instagram developer, José-Miguel Chavarría Múgica. We are at a very early stage with Instagram. Now we are just exploring different options for all kinds of audiences. Though the pope has a lot of catching up to do with many religious leaders, like Joyce Meyers (62,000+ followers), Joel Osteen (nearly 60,000 followers) and Rick Warren (40,000+ followers), he should easily overtake them and become the primary social media guru. Perhaps Francis will take over social media, particularly Instagram with powerful images that reflect papal intentions for the world. Social media has world-wide influence and should become a powerful tool in the hands of the Papacy. All the world wondered after the beast. 6 ~ Adventist News Network ~ THOUSANDS OF ADVENTISTS RESPOND TO THE ZIKA VIRUS IN BRAZIL Members of all ages are mobilizing resources to act against a virus that the World Health Organization has declared a "global public health emergency." [Photo courtesy of the South American Division] 6 As global alarm grows about the Zika virus, hundreds of thousands of Seventh-day Adventists in one of the most affected countries, Brazil, decided to respond with their hands and feet. The Adventist Church in Brazil kicked off the Zika Project, a national campaign to raise awareness, prevent new infections, and mobilize people to act against a virus that the World Health Organization has declared a global public health emergency. Zika, which can be transmitted by mosquito or unprotected sex with an infected partner, has no medical treatment, but the brief illness and its occasional symptoms of mild fever and headache usually go unnoticed by those who are infected. Doctors major worry is the virus may be linked to thousands of babies born with underdeveloped brains in Brazil. The church s Zika Project launched in late February with a public awareness drive that started with 200,000 students and hopes to expand to at least 600,000 Adventist believers, said Marcello Niek, the physician in charge of the initiative. Initially we worked with more than 200,000 students from our Adventist schools, colleges, and universities and their families, Niek said. But the effort snowballed, and the number of participants is likely to reach at least 2 million. The 2 million figure includes both Adventists and non-adventists. The Adventist Church has about 1.5 million baptized members in Brazil. During a recent public awareness drive, students organized three days of schoolbased seminars where people could learn about the virus and ask questions. On the

7 fourth day, the students encouraged their families to join them in talking with neighbors about what precautions could be taken against the virus. Students now are developing extracurricular activities that use the arts, the Internet, and public discussions to educate people about Zika prevention. A group of students has created a website, adv.st/forazika, with practical information about the virus. Later this month, Pathfinders and other Adventist young people will begin to implement community projects to eradicate the virus and to inform people about the risks of stagnant water and uncollected garbage. In the southern city of Porto Alegre, the Partenon Adventist School has reworked several classes to incorporate the Zika risk. In addition to math and geography, students in the school's biology class have studied Zika symptoms and how to prevent the proliferation of mosquitoes at home. In the state of Bahia, authorities invited Adventist representatives to attend a discussion of effective measures against mosquitos that transmits Zika. The local church, which was already involved in a public awareness initiative, was pleased to participate. This invitation from Governor Rui Costa is very good because we had the initiative and, with the partnership of the government, we will have more tools to lead the campaign in the community, said Luís Fernando Ferreira, ADRA s regional director in Bahia. More than 400 students are participating in the Zika campaign in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The teens are distributing pamphlets about how to fight mosquitoes at home and are spraying mosquito repellent on willing passersby. Some are standing at traffic lights, wearing mosquito costumes and holding banners and posters with health tips. The students efforts have caught the attention of one of the largest local newspapers, the Jornal do Brasil, which published a report about their work as well as the national campaign. ~ God s Little Book of Encouragement ~ Seek Him... White) Cruel Crucifixion (chapter 10, pp ) The news of His condemnation had spread throughout Jerusalem, and people of all classes and all ranks flocked toward the place of crucifixion.... {CSA 36.1} As Jesus passed the gate of Pilate s court, the cross which had been prepared for Barabbas was laid upon His bruised and bleeding shoulders.... The Saviour s burden was too heavy for Him in His weak and suffering condition. Since the Passover supper with His disciples, He had taken neither food nor drink. He had agonized in the garden of Gethsemane in conflict with satanic agencies. He had endured the anguish of the betrayal, and had seen His disciples forsake Him and flee. He had been taken to Annas, then to Caiaphas, and then to Pilate. From Pilate He had been sent to Herod, then sent again to Pilate. From insult to renewed insult, from mockery to mockery, twice tortured by the scourge, all that night there had been scene after scene of a character to try the soul of man to the uttermost.... But when after the second scourging the cross was laid upon Him, human nature could bear no more. He fell fainting beneath the burden. 61 {CSA 36.2} The mother of Jesus, supported by John the beloved disciple, had followed the steps of her Son to Calvary. She had seen Him fainting under the burden of the cross, and had longed to place a supporting hand beneath His wounded head, and to bathe that brow which had once been pillowed upon her bosom. But she was not permitted this mournful privilege. 62 {CSA 36.3} At this time a stranger, Simon a Cyrenian, coming in from the country, meets the throng. He hears the taunts and ribaldry of the crowd; he hears the words contemptuously repeated, Make way for the King of the Jews! He stops in astonishment at the scene; and as he expresses his compassion, they seize him and place the cross upon his shoulders. {CSA 36.4} Simon had heard of Jesus. His sons were believers in the Saviour, but he himself was not a disciple. The bearing of the cross to Calvary was a blessing to Simon, and he was ever after grateful for this providence. It led him to take upon himself the cross of Christ from choice, and ever cheerfully stand beneath its burden. {CSA 36.5} 8

11 ~ Weekly Devotional ~ Seek Bible Truth At Any Cost For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. 1 John 5:3 It was a great sacrifice Christ made for us in dying for us upon the cross. What are we willing to sacrifice for His love? Jesus says, If ye love me, keep my commandments" not to select out one or two or nine, but the whole ten. All His commandments must be kept. John tells us of those who pretend to love but do not obey God s requirements. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. You may say, So you believe that all the learned world is wrong and that a poor company, greatly in the minority, looked upon as ignorant, common people, are all that will be saved? I answer, Jesus was among the lowly of the earth. He did not take His position by the side of the learned rabbis or the rulers. He was not found among the potentates of earth, but among the lowly ones. The truth was never found among the majority. It was ever found among the minority. The angels from heaven did not come to the school of the prophets and sing their anthems over the Temple or synagogues, but they went to those who were humble enough to receive the message. They sang the glad tidings of a Saviour over Bethlehem s plains while the great, the rulers, and the honorable were left in darkness because they were perfectly satisfied with their position and felt no need of a piety greater than that which they possessed. Teachers in the schools of the prophets, the scribes and priests and rulers, were the worst persecutors of Christ. Those who made the highest pretensions to spiritual light were the very ones who slighted and rejected and crucified Christ. Great men and women and professedly very good people may do terrible deeds in their bigotry and self-exalted position, and flatter themselves that they are doing God service. It will not do to rely upon them. Truth, Bible truth, you and I want at any cost. Like the noble Bereans we want to search the Scriptures daily with earnest prayer, to know what is truth, and then obey the truth at any cost to ourselves, without reference to prominent people or good people. If truth is in the Bible, we can find it there as well as the good and great ones of earth. God help us to be wise unto salvation is my prayer.
