1 The Messenger FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OCTOBER 2017 PASTOR: KYLE BURNETTE ASSOCIATE PASTOR: NANCY HOBBS SECRETARY/EDITOR: SANDY RAMSEY Dear Sisters and Brothers, As I sit here in the office on a Monday morning in late September reflecting on the news both locally and worldwide illness, death, anger, sin, rejection, and a plethora of other things that can cause one to lose his/her grip, I must admit there have been times in this pastor s life, as I am confident yours too, that we cried out silently God are you listening? It is succinctly at times such as these we must turn to God s word for strength. Paul s letter to the Romans is a wonderful source of strength in times such as we face today. The letter to the Romans is widely regarded as Paul s most carefully considered, rhetorically sophisticated, and theologically important writing, composed near the end of his ministry as he shared seasoned reflections on the Christian faith. Paul had dealt with rejection and pain, and had even cried out to God for relief. He had been assured that God s strength was greater than his weakness and that Christ was with him wherever life carried him. Romans 8:35-39 gives us that assurance. 35 Who will separate us from Christ s love? Will we be separated by trouble, or distress, or harassment, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, we are being put to death all day long for your sake. We are treated like sheep for slaughter. 37 But in all these things we win a sweeping victory through the one who loved us. 38 I m convinced that nothing can separate us from God s love in Christ Jesus our Lord:not death or life, not angels or rulers, not present things or future things, not powers 39 or height or depth, or any other thing that is created. Friends, I am convinced that God knows our hurts and knows our hearts. He comes to us with comfort and strength. That help might come directly; however, God often chooses to move through the beauty of creation, or the strong hand of a friend, or the inquiring look of a child no matter how God speaks to you or me, my prayer is that we are willing to listen to Him and follow His leading. Shalom to you my friend, Pastor Kyle
2 NEWS FROM THE K.I.C.K.S. GROUP On Wednesday, September 6 th, the Wednesday night Children s Groups began another year. Deanna Robbins is the teacher for K-5, but due to such a large number in this age group we have put the fifth graders into the next class. These children are still considered part of the K.I.C.K.S. group and will be included in all of the activities. Jim Parsons is the teacher for Junior High but due to the small number he agreed to take the fifth grade in with his class. If his class increases, the fifth grade will go back. The children are very excited to have Mr. Jim back with us. Betsy McElyea has the Senior High group which is 9-12 grades. Her lessons are built around current events and happenings the Senior High can relate to in today s world. All classes are having lessons with activities. We want to welcome 5 new children to our Wednesday night Program. Senior and Junior High are raising money for Resurrection in January. To be able to go they have to attend at least three meetings a month and work at the Fund Raisers. Lori Watson is meeting on Sunday nights at five. Some are attending both and others are coming on Wednesday night after practice. The rule is no attendance then no going to Resurrection. All this was sent to each Junior High and Senior High this summer by Lori. The Junior and Senior High will work the men s breakfast during the Tobacco Festival. Lori will have sign in sheet. If you need transportation you need to let Betsy, Lori or Jim know. Thanks goes out to: Jack, Geraldine, Marietta, Lexie, Judy M. Ann, Mary Poe, Deanna, Betsy and Jim for giving of their time freely to help on Wednesday night after their busy days. We are looking forward to Birg and Lana returning. The kids miss Mr. Claude and all his kisses he gives out. We appreciate all who have donated supplies to our Mission of donating to the nurses and teachers. If anyone wants to donate the tube is in Sandy s office. We will collect until the end of September. Below is a list of items you can donate. Band Aides (all sizes) Disinfectant spray Liquid Hand Soap Cough Drops Chap Stick Tissue Hand Sanitizer Disinfectant Wipes Please remember all the adults and children on Wednesday night in your prayers. Sue Brown, Children s Coordinator
