12 Great Plains Wee Kirk Conferences provide opportunities for pastors and lay leaders of smaller membership churches to find ideas for ministry in their contexts, to experience encouragement, and to have their souls fed. The Conference this year will be April 30 May 2, 2018 in the beautiful setting of Calvin Crest Camp, Conference, and Retreat Center ( located along the Platte River near Fremont, Nebraska. Our Featured Speaker is Rev. Chris Walker. Chris is a teacher, coach, pastor and principle writer for EvangelismCoach.org. Chris says he was once the in-your-face obnoxious evangelist, but has grown in skill and grace. He is an ordained pastor in the PCUSA, and has taught evangelism and church renewal in 8 different countries. He believes that the local church will not fulfill its mission of reaching people for Christ if guests do not return and find a church home. It is his goal to help Christians in their local churches to fulfill their mission AND increase their comfort levels in sharing the Riches of God s Glory, and in welcoming others into their worshipping communities. So what can you expect? Find out at: The Presbytery office will be closed on Good Friday, March North Iowa Presbyterian E-News

17 Thoughts of Rev. David Feltman, Pastor to the Presbytery, Presbytery of North Central Iowa Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, I enjoy my old tractors. I have four antique tractors ranging from Last Friday afternoon I loaded up my Massey Harris on the trailer to take it to the shop with a clutch problem. I want to be ready for planting. We live on a gravel road south of Waterloo and no one just drops by, but my red Massey was a draw and two neighbors pulled in. I was ready to talk, grew up on one just like it. I showed them the other tractors in the shed. I recently heard of a church with a community garden right out in front of the church. Church members worked that garden, nearly every morning. People from the neighborhood are drawn by that garden, they stop and look, and the conversation begins which can lead to discussion about the bread of life. I participated in an on-line conference this morning where we talked about evangelism. I think we are simply scared of the word these days. It has been so abused in culture it is so misunderstood. I shared in worship last Sunday that I would be scared of me if I would meet me on the street. I have personalized license plates, a gift from the church staff years ago. The plates read GRACB2U. I have a little wooden cross with a yoke hanging on my rearview mirror. It was made by an elder in the church I served in New Jersey 40 years ago. I carry a Bible, occasionally in public, that must weigh 5 pounds if I met me on the street I would wonder if that guy is going to clobber me with that book. Evangelism, especially in our day, carries much baggage. D. T. Niles said, Evangelism is one beggar telling another beggar where to get bread. Martin Luther wrote, Evangelism is bringing Christ to men and men to Christ. R. S. Armstrong wrote, Evangelism is reaching out to others in Christian love, identifying with them, caring for them, listening to them and sharing one s faith with them in such a way that they will freely respond and want to commit themselves to trust, love, and obey God as a disciple of Jesus Christ and a member of his servant community. Does your church have any outreach effort this Lenten season? With love in Christ, David Feltman 17 North Iowa Presbyterian E-News

18 Poor Richard s Almanac by Richard Francis, Stated Clerk, Presbytery of Prospect Hill One of the perks of this job is having access to the giving records of congregations for One Great Hour of Sharing. Don t worry I m not going to post them here, though I m tempted. I m tempted because I d like to celebrate the generosity of some of our congregations, not to shame other congregations, but to challenge you. I will share some general information about our giving to One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) and how it relates to general trends in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). For example, you might think that the largest churches in our Presbytery give the most to OGHS, but you would be wrong. The largest gift to OGHS in 2017 was $1,727, from a 116-member congregation. That works out to $14.89 per member, almost four times the national average of $3,76 per member. The highest per-member giving was $19.30, from a congregation of 83 members. Now, I realize that many of our congregations give generously to other causes, including local mission, so it isn t possible to make a fair comparison. Those who give less to OGHS may be giving more to other equally worthy causes. But when you consider that it s pretty hard to feed a family of four in a fast-food restaurant for $19.30 something many of us do a lot then I think there s room for improvement. One less fastfood meal in a year could mean a big increase in your giving to help others. I think there s room for improvement because One Great Hour of Sharing does so much good work, and giving to it enables us all to be a part of that work. As the OGHS website, says, A gift to One Great Hour of Sharing enables the church to share God s love with our neighbors-in-need around the world by providing relief to those affected by natural disasters, provide food to the hungry, and helping to empower the poor and oppressed. To give just one example: when Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico last year, we were there with emergency assistance funded by One Great Hour of Sharing. We typically receive One Great Hour of Sharing offerings at Easter, which is rapidly approaching. If you haven t already, you can go to the site highlighted above to get resources for interpreting and promoting OGHS, including a new PowerPoint presentation you can use in worship or any other congregational gathering. For you know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. (2 Corinthians 8:9 NRSV). Jesus calls us to be generous: with our time, with our talents, with our money. One Great Hour of Sharing is one way to be generous. No one of us can do everything. But together, we can do something. Blessings, 18 North Iowa Presbyterian E-News

19 Moderator s Message Grace and Peace! This Lent, the congregation where I serve is doing a photo challenge on the social media networks Facebook and Instagram. We are using the hashtag #fpcwalkinlove. This has been a fun way to put positive, meaningful pictures on Facebook. About a dozen people in our congregation are participating and seeing their creativity with what words like simple and tree mean to them has been inspiring. We share the pictures in a slideshow each week in the sanctuary before the service beings. I had to chuckle because on the day I was to moderate the stated meeting of the Presbytery, the word was everlasting. I told my colleagues that our meeting would not exemplify the word of the day. The snow then postponed our meeting, and I flipped my calendar over a week to see what the word of the day was for the new Presbytery day. The word was fast. I had to chuckle. God has a sense of humor. Our business meeting went by smoothly and exemplified the word fast. Seeing these pictures and chucking at God s sense of humor has brought me joy this Lenten season. If you have an Instagram account or a Facebook account, search our hashtag and see what pictures are posted for the day. Blessings on your Lenten season and Holy Week. Rev. Sara Hill, Moderator Presbytery of North Central Iowa 19 North Iowa Presbyterian E-News
