PRAYER SERVICE FOR HEALING For those afflicted with a chronic or a temporary illness, of body or soul, a prayer service will be offered on Wednesday, November 7th, at 5:30. 4 A CONTINUING STUDY OF OUR STAINED GLASS WINDOWS ST. JOHN Apostle (1st century) Feast Day December 27th Located on the right side, small lower window, 6th one back (snake in chalice) St. John figures in all four Gospels, as one of the earliest of the twelve apostles. He and his brother James, both Galilean fishermen, were called by Jesus sons of thunder. John was a privileged witness of many significant moments in Jesus life, including the raising of Jairus daughter, the transfiguration, and the agony in the Garden. By tradition, John is also identified as the author of the 4th Gospel, written most likely toward the end of the 1st century. If not actually written by his hand, the 4th Gospel is certainly the product of a community that traced its identity and spirituality to the apostle John, referred to throughout the Gospel as the disciple whom Jesus loved. The Gospel of John includes many references to the affectionate relationship between Jesus and the beloved disciple. The latter is described as resting his head on Jesus breast during the Last Supper. He alone among the Twelve is described as a witness to the crucifixion. There among his parting words, Jesus takes care to entrust the disciple and his mother to one another s care. Woman, behold your son! Then he said to the disciple, Behold, your mother! and from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. John s Gospel, far more than the other Gospels, emphasizes Jesus human affections, especially for John himself, but also for Mary Magdalene, for Mary of Bethany and her sister Martha, and for their brother Lazrus, whose death causes Jesus to weep. Indeed, John s Gospel alone records that Jesus addressed his disciples as friends. For the community that honored the beloved disciple the gospel message is succinctly summarized in the charge to love one another as Jesus loved us. In John s account of the Last Supper he provides a striking example of such love when, after supper, Jesus lays aside his garments girds himself with a towel, and proceeds to wash the feet of his disciples. Ultimately the power of God is revealed in loving service. According to tradition John outlived the rest of the Twelve. He escaped martyrdom and was sent into exile on the island of Patmos. Later he retired to Ephesus, where he presided over the local church until the end of his days. He was supposedly known for delivering the same short sermon regardless of the occasion or circumstances. Brothers and sisters, love one another. When members of his congregation asked whether they couldn t, sometime hear a different message, he answered: When you have mastered this lesson we can move on to another. Wes Howard Brook, Becoming Children of God: John s Gospel and Radical Discipleship (Maryknoll, N.Y.: Orbis, 1995) CATHOLIC SENTINEL -- LOOK FOR IT! The Catholic Sentinel newspaper is available at the doors of the church every other week. The newspaper s website, CatholicSentinel.org, offers daily Vatican, world and national news and photographs from the Catholic News Service, as well as news, information, and photos about Oregon s Catholic community generated by the staff. If we can enter the church day and night and implore God to hear our prayers, how careful we should be to hear and grant the petitions of our neighbors in need. ~~ St. Francis of Assisi SAFETY REMINDER FOR CHILDREN When children leave Mass, or coffee and donuts to go to the Hall bathrooms an adult should accompany them.
