2 CHRIST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH of the PCA GATHERED TO WORSHIP SEPTEMBER 30, 2018 CHIMES WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS PRELUDE The prelude is a sacred curtain dropped between the world and our time of worship. During this time of preparation, you are encouraged to pray silently, asking the Holy Spirit to enable you to cling to and delight yourself in Christ. *CALL TO WORSHIP (PLEASE SILENCE ALL PHONES AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES.) *AFFIRMATION OF PRAISE (#164) O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing *COLLECTIVE CONFESSION Most holy and merciful Father, we acknowledge and confess before You our sinful nature prone to evil and slothful in good and all our shortcomings and offenses against You. You alone know how often we have sinned in wandering from Your ways, in wasting Your gifts, in forgetting Your love. O Lord, have mercy on us, who are ashamed and sorry for all wherein we have displeased You. Teach us to hate our errors, cleanse us from our secret faults, and forgive our sins for the sake of Your dear Son. And O most holy and loving Father, send Your purifying grace into our hearts, we beseech You, that we may henceforth live in Your light and walk in Your ways, according to the commandments of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. *ASSURANCE OF PARDON 1 John 2:1-2 Be comforted and hear the good tidings of the Gospel: If any man hath sinned, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 2
3 *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Unison: We believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge both the living and the dead; whose Kingdom shall have no end. The Nicene Creed And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets. and we believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church; we acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins, and we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. *GLORIA PATRI Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be; World without end, Amen, Amen. HYMN (#562 ) All to Jesus I Surrender 3
4 PRAYER OF CONSECRATION OFFERTORY *DOXOLOGY Praise God from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Children (up to age 5) may be dismissed to nursery building AFTER the doxology. *MORNING PRAYER (CLOSING WITH THE LORD S PRAYER ) Our father, who art in heaven; Hallowed be Thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts; as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil; for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *CHORAL RESPONSE THE NEW TESTAMENT LESSON ROMANS 2:3-5 Minister: This is the Word of God. People: Thanks be to God! PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION SERMON *HYMN (#672) Pastor Dick Jones Trust and Obey *BENEDICTION *POSTLUDE We are hosting a Visitor Luncheon TODAY in the Education Building immediately following the worship service. Whether this is your first time visiting or you have been visiting us for a while, you re invited to share in a meal with members from our fellowship. Pastor Berdj is our Minister of Visitation. 5 The Heidelberg Catechism Q & A # 1-2 Question 1: Answer: Question 2: Answer: What is your only comfort in life and death? That I, with body and soul, both in life and death, am not my own, but belong unto my faithful Savior Jesus Christ; who with His precious blood has fully satisfied for all my sins, and delivered me from all the power of the devil; and so preserves me that without the will of my heavenly Father not a hair can fall from my head; yea, that all things must be subservient to my salvation, wherefore by His Holy Spirit He also assures me of eternal life, and makes me heartily willing and ready, henceforth, to live unto Him. How many things are necessary for you to know, that you in this comfort may live and die happily? Three; the first, how great my sins and misery are; the second, how I am delivered from all my sins and misery; the third, how I am to be thankful to God for such deliverance. The rose bud is in honor of Mary Brooke Sims Born on September 24th to Travis & April Sims, along with siblings Shannon, Bryan, Lisa, David and Mark. 12 MISSION STATEMENT Seeking to make disciples as God s Word is taught and the people of God seek the Glory of God as they Worship in Spirit and in Truth. During that historic period known as The Reformation, men of great courage and conviction set about to reform a Church which had departed from many of the essential truths of Orthodox Christianity. These truths are often referred to as the solas. The Latin phrases are: SOLA SCRIPTURA or THE SCRIPTURE ALONE! SOLUS CHRISTUS or CHRIST ALONE! SOLA GRATIA or GRACE ALONE! SOLE FIDE or FAITH ALONE! SOLI DEO GLORIA!
