1 Anglican Diocese of Bunbury PO Box 15 Bunbury WA 6231 Ph , Fax J ul A ug THE SOUTHERN ANGLICAN GROWING TOGETHER Blessing of the Fleet More than 1000 people attended the inaugural Blessing of the Fleet at the new Augusta Boat Harbour on May 31. Carrying the processional cross from St Margaret s in Margaret River, Children from Augusta Primary School led the way through the community markets followed by Revd Sarah MacPherson to the other side of the boat harbour where the blessing took place. Then they proceeded onto the marina where every boat was sprinkled with holy water and censed with incense. The children then cast two wreathes of flowers into the water. The first in memory of all who have died or been injured at sea or on the docks. The second in thanksgiving for the harvest of the sea, and for the beauty and great joy that it gives. The event marked the beginning of the whale watching season at Augusta and other boats were also decorated and blessed including crayfishing, wet line, abalone boats and recreational vessels. After prayers for responsible care for the environment, Revd Sarah gave thanks for the beauty of the ocean, the whales, the great leviathans of the deep, for the record year for the crayfish catch, for the new harbour and those with the foresight to build it, and for the abalone farm coming into production. Prayers were led for safety and protection for all those on board the boats and for their families. 2 The Southern Anglican Page 2 Dear Friends, Two things occupy my mind as I write, Growing Together and my leave. Growing Together 2015 The preparation of material for our Growing Together in 2015 has been difficult. Following the Synod last year the Empowering the Church for Change group met and quite quickly identified a theme for the 2015 Growing Together program; it was to an encouragement to Take Heart. In the context of the different ways in which fear was manifest in people s lives it was felt strongly that the Christian response was to Take Heart ; to trust in God. Although this theme suggested a connection with 2014 s From the Edge to the Heart the approach was to be quite different. The five weeks planned were to be focused around three things; the gospel readings from Mark, passages from John 1, and additions from Julian of Norwich and the hymn-writer Brian Wren. Sadly the plans have not come to completion. Careful preparation was interrupted by illness and other events in the diocese. Deadlines were missed as other demands were met, and ultimately there was no time to complete every part of the program ready for the parishes. For me there has been something important to learn. The conviction that, as a diocese, we should share a common program as an expression of our Common Prayer remains unchallenged. However, the ways in which we pray together must be flexible enough to change with different seasons in our shared life. I had hoped that we would continue exactly as we had for the past three years, but that is not to be. Take Heart will feature as a theme of my Presidential Address to Synod in October, and as a theme in our great celebratory Eucharist on Synod Sunday, but our Growing Together will take another form. One the significant innovations in ministry in this last twelve months has been the development of the Ministry of the Scattered People of the Good Shepherd. This is a ministry which invites people from every part of the Diocese to share in Christian life which has both a global identity, expressed by the dedicated website ( and a very local expression in the regular support and encouragement that individual members offer to each other and other Christians that they know. Our Growing Together for 2015 is an invitation for every part of the diocese to become aware of, pray for, and participate with the Ministry of the Scattered people of the Good Shepherd. The invitation to Growing Together will be sent to parishes by August 10, ready for a beginning on Sunday August 30. On Leave On August 11 I leave Australia for Long Service in England and Europe. During my absence Fr Joe Hopkins will be Administrator of the diocese. I leave looking forward to refreshment and renewal, and confident that the diocese is well and in good hands. I look forward to our return in October and our Synod later that month. Your brother in Christ, +Allan A L E T T E R F R O M B I S H O P A L L A N

3 The Southern Anglican Page 3 Father Ed Argyle Father Ed Argyle came to Bunbury Diocese in 2000 where he served in Albany, Jerramungup, Cranbrook/Mt Barker and Williams Parishes returning to Albany as Parish Priest. Father Ed or Fred as he is in my mobile phone. Ed was equally at ease mixing with homeless, people who came for Emergency Relief, Prime Ministers, Governor Generals, policiticans, children, the elderly and all in between and all found him to be caring and kind. He recently held a dreaming day for the Parish and his dream for the Parish was for us to stay strong, pull together and grow. Throughout the Community he was held in very high regard. In the Parish he was everywhere, dropping into the Op Shop, Marthas s, Churchwatch, E.R, Choir practice, Mens Breakfast to lend his support in addition to his pastoral work. He loved his Parishioners and was deeply loved and respected in return. Ed has come home and will always be here with us. His sudden death was sad because he had so much more to give. If we are to honour his memory we must pull together, go forward and support Judy and the family. In the hours just before he died Ed and I worked together, we had discussions, we laughed and celebrated the fact that the pain in his back had been somewhat relieved. A man of God has gone to God and we should mourn his passing and quietly rejoice. Eulogy by Marie Ham Photos Provided by Sheena Prince

4 The Southern Anglican Page 4 2 years on. It s a strange sensation, the passage of time, in some moments it can feel like we are still very much in a new place and yet in others it s like we ve been here forever. Much has been achieved including a new Waroona Op-Shop, Messy Church ministry, other things have been tried such as a playgroup that never got off the ground, and there are challenges to face in taking care of old buildings amongst other things. However, our overwhelming sense remains one of joy and gratitude for the very great care that has been taken of us by our parish, our community and the diocese. 5 The Southern Anglican Page 5 Candidates for Ordination Twice during the year, participants in the Advanced Diploma of Christian Ministry run through St. Mark s National Theological Center, meet together for study intensives. The participants are ordination candidates, and some who have been ordained since beginning the course. Three subjects are considered over three days in presentations, discussion, and reflection. This June we considered worship, leadership, and pastoral practice. It was an engaging, challenging and rewarding experience for all in attendance. From every participant our thanks to Paul Cannon, and Andrew Cameron and Jane Foulcher from St Mark s for leading us in the weekend." Article and Photo: Joshua Millard Finding a True Course in a Changing World Margaret Silf is an internationally acclaimed writer, Spiritual Director, and retreat director who works in the Ignatian tradition. Margaret s passion is making Ignatian spirituality accessible to everyone, including those with no theological background. Margaret has had a very varied faith journey with experience across denominations and she calls herself a boundary dweller in terms of the institutional church. Margaret is the author of some 48 books according to GoodReads.com, some of you would know the book she will use at this presentation, called Landmarks. The title of her presentation is Finding a True Course in a Changing World and I think it apt for the current world, community, and personal environs we all inhabit. 6 The Southern Anglican Page 6 Cursillo Weekend There is always a buzz of excitement in the air at the beginning of a 3 Day Cursillo Weekend. The team have been preparing for about 6 months, and now the day has arrived when they will put all their training into practice. The participants have been looking forward to finally finding out what Cursillo is all about, and now they are arriving at the venue full of anticipation. This was the feeling at the Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School on 9 th July as two Cursillo weekends got under way. The tenth weekend and for women and the ninth weekend for men to be held in the Bunbury Diocese ran side-by-side, sharing the same venue from 9 th to 12 th July. Cursillo is Spanish for little course, and a Cursillo weekend is an intensive three day course in Christianity, intended for people who are already Christians but are ready to take another step in their journey. The weekend includes several talks and meditations, shared worship and a lot of singing and fun. It is an experience of intentional Christian community that nurtures and supports everyone involved. The weekend at BCGS was a great success, thanks to our Lay Directors, Ken and Jan Ritson and their fantastic teams. In many parishes people who have attended a Three Day Weekend meet regularly: these meetings are also open to all members of a parish to attend if they wish, as are the periodic celebrations (called Ultreyas another Spanish word) held in various centres of the Diocese. Every parish has a Cursillo representative who is responsible for publicising and informing parishes and church members about these kinds of gatherings. These specific events are all part of what is called the "fourth day" - our Christian life after a three day Cursillo weekend! 7 The Southern Anglican Page 7 WAR MEMORIAL WINDOW SAINT BONIFACE CATHEDRAL Saint Boniface Anglican Cathedral Bunbury is officially a War Memorial and is listed on the WA State Heritage Register as such. But until now there has been no visible recognition of its status. Accordingly, a new War Memorial Window has been designed and was successfully installed on Tuesday 26th May 2015 by a team from Perth Art Glass. Inspired by the WW1 flag of the 44th Battalion, which most of the soldiers from Bunbury joined, the window depicts a wreath of Australian wattle, Western Australian red and green kangaroo paw, interwoven with rosemary, centred on a cross on a blue background. The cross rises out of a field of red poppies. A scroll at the bottom of the window is inscribed with two quotes from the gospels: No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. John 15:13 and Blessed are the peace makers for they will be called children of God. Matthew 5:9. On the arms of the cross is written the words of the ode LEST WE FORGET. The window is above the door in the south trancept. The Dedication Service was conducted by Bishop Allan on 30th May 2015 at 11 am. Dean Emeritas the Very Revd Stewart MacPherson joined Bishop Allan, Revd Karon Austin and John Jones at the altar. Lex Fletcher-Hobbs played the Last Post and Reveille. Bel Canto singers conducted by Roy Hanson provide the choral accompaniment. Several artefacts including a WWI Light Horse hat, a miniature cenotaph/shrine and service flags were displayed, kindly loaned by the Bunbury RSL. The Ladies from the Stirling Centre installed a Tree of Hearts that replicated pin cushion hearts stitched by hospitalised wounded servicemen during WW people attended the Dedication Service, including a large contingent from the Bunbury RSL and one WW2 veteran aged 94. Several ministers from around the parish also made the long trip to help celebrate the dedication. Article and Photo: Neville Peterkin Can you help? This photo is from the West Australian in It is of a painting by Ethel Anderson, an early twentieth century Australian poet, essayist and painter, and is approximately 6 feet x 5 feet. It has been called The Blue Lady or The Bunbury Madonna. It was last seen in the late 1950 s hanging in the now demolished St Paul s Anglican Pro-Cathedral in central Bunbury. If you know of its whereabouts please contact Don Reid on or dongen@westnet.com.au.

8 T he S o u th e r n A n g l i c a n P ag e 8 New Models of Ministry Anglican Communities (Part 2) Small is Good.. The Anglican Community Model of Ministry offers Parishes a way of continuing to be centres for worship but for various reasons, are unable to meet the Diocesan Requirements of a Parish. This new model of Ministry was adopted formally at the 2014 Synod of the Diocese. Anglican Communities have specific organisational requirements and needs to meet together for regular worship, growth in faith and engage in the life of their local community. The focus is on unity and collaboration. The emphasis is on providing sustainable ministry in each situation. No two Anglican Communities are exactly alike; what is sustainable in one centre could be totally unsustainable in another and vice versa. Currently there are four Parishes who have become Anglican Communities: Metricup, Wagin, Jerramungup and Gnowangerup. There are at least two others considering adopting this new model of ministry. We are planning an Anglican Communities Muster for Saturday 7Th November Current and potential Anglican Communities will gather together in Wagin for the Muster which will be a day of fellowship, mutual encouragement, teaching and worship.
