Christmas Traditions from Around the World from the Advanced Technology Class Christmas in China Christians in China celebrate by lighting their houses with beautiful paper lanterns and decorating their Christmas trees, which they call "Trees of Light," with paper chains, paper flowers, and paper lanterns. Chinese Children hang muslin stockings and await a visit from Santa Claus, whom they call Dun Che Lao Ren (dwyn-chuh-lau-oh-run) which means "Christmas Old Man." By: Ashley Coffey Christmas in Italy The Christmas season in Italy goes for three weeks, starting 8 days before Christmas known as the Novena. During this period, children go from house to house reciting Christmas poems and singing. In some parts shepherds bring musical instruments into the villages, play and sing Christmas songs. In the week before Christmas children go from house to house dressed as shepherds, playing pipes, singing and reciting Christmas poems. They are given money to buy presents. A strict feast is observed for 24 hours before Christmas Eve, and is followed by a celebration meal, in which a light Milanese cake called panettone features as well as chocolate. Presents and empty boxes are drawn from the Urn of Fate - lucky dip, which always contains one gift per person. By twilight, candles are lighted around the family crib known as the Presepio, prayers are said, and children recite poems. Christmas in Brazil There is a very common tradition among friends and families, called amigo secreto. At the beginning of December, participants in the game write their name on a piece of paper. Each participant takes a paper (but does not reveal the name of the person on it). During the month there are exchanges of correspondence among the participants who use apelidos (fake names). On Christmas, family and friends gather to reveal their secret friends and offer them a special gift. By: Raul Cortez At noon on Christmas Day the pope gives his blessing to crowds gathered in the huge Vatican square. In Italy the children wait until Epiphany, January 6, for their presents. According to tradition, the presents are delivered by a kind ugly witch called Befana on a broomstick. It was said that she was told by the three kings that the baby Jesus was born; she was busy and delayed visiting the baby. In Italy, they have a Befana like we have our Santa Claus or St. Nicholas! Befana: She missed the Star lost her way and has been flying around ever since, leaving presents at every house with children in case he is there. She slides down chimneys, and fills stockings and shoes with good things for good children and it is said leaves coal for children who are not so good. By: Tori Blake
Christmas in Spain Christmas is a deeply religious holiday in Spain. Spanish especially honor the cow at Christmas because it is thought when Mary gave birth to Jesus the cow in the stable breathed on Jesus to warm him. A traditional Christmas treat is a kind of almond candy turron. By: O. J. Hardin Well I did Christmas in Vietnam! In Vietnam they like to eat lots of vegetables, because they believe that the harvest god Osiris, said that eating vegetables shall help you in the afterlife! The make origami and special decorated fortune cookies on Christmas. They play sports for the fun of it! As you can see their Christmas is different from ours! Chúa Mừng Giáng Sinh(Merry Christmas in Vienamese)! - Jade Anderson Christmas in Italy Christmas in Italy is religious and following traditions. A few traditions in Italy are that they don t eat meat 24 hours before Christmas Eve. Another tradition is that they exchange gifts on the Feast of Ephiphany on January 6. Originally Christmas started in Italy on December 24, It started out as a Nativity play and it turned into one of the most popular holidays of the year. By: ArturoValles MeRrY christmas I did Christmas in Ireland. Christmas in Ireland is almost the same as Christmas in America. They buy gifts for each other, eat lots of good food, and they believe in Santa Claus. One thing they do in Ireland at Christmas that we don t do is they place candles in their windows on Christmas Eve. They do this to welcome strangers and remember those people far away from home. They have some pretty weird Christmas foods. They eat goose for the main course. They then eat fruity cake called Christmas cake served with whiskey. Then they eat mince pies and drink brandy. By: John Wise I did Christmas in Scotland. Scotland is mostly Catholic. They have competitions in Christmas decorations. The Scottish people have their big celebrations on New Year's Day, called Hogmanay. A long time ago there is a superstition that it is bad luck for the fire to go out on Christmas Eve, since it is at this time that the elves are abroad and only a raging fire will keep them from coming down the chimney. On Christmas day, people sometimes make big bonfires and dance around them to the playing of bagpipes. Bannock cakes made of oatmeal are traditionally eaten at Christmas. By, Ben Butler
Christmas Traditions at Home from the Advanced Technology Class Christmas at my House My family puts up the beautiful Christmas tree, hang up our stockings, and usually bake cookies for Santa Claus that night! We also spend time with each of my parent s side of the family, get and receive gifts, and the most important thing of all, we honor the time when Jesus Christ was born! By: Ashley Coffey At my house during Christmas we put up the tree about two days after Thanksgiving. We decorate the tree with different things clay ornament versions of me, my sister, and my brother. The tree has regular little ornaments on it, but also on the tree is something that represents each of the people in the family. On Christmas morning we wake up, drink coffee, pray, and hand out and open presents from youngest to oldest. Those are my family traditions! So what are yours? - Jade Anderson Christmas in My Family (I m Mexican) My family eats all kinds of things. We eat mostly the traditional dishes from Mexico. We eat mole, posole, aroz, frijoles, enchiladas, chiles rellenos, and also more things. By Raul Cortez My Christmas Traditions My family puts up a real Christmas tree in my living room and decorate it with lights and ornaments. We put other decorations in my house. A couple days before Christmas we ll go to my Grandfather s house. We ll eat a lot of foods and spend time with family. On Christmas day we ll go to my Grandmother s house and eat a lot of food. We ll spend time with family. We ll open stockings and give and receive gifts. Then a couple days after Christmas we ll go to my other Grandmother s house. We do that sort of thing for our Christmas traditions. Our family does the kinds of things most families do for Christmas! By: Tori Blake Merry Christmas from our Homes to Yours! Christmas at My House Christmas in my house is religious and having a good time as well. We also have traditions at our house. One of those traditions is to put the Christmas tree before December even starts. Another recent tradition my mom made is to make Chocó flan as the Christmas desert. My favorite tradition is when my mom and I go to the Christmas mass at midnight. By: Arturo Valles Every year I put the Christmas tree up. We have a fake tree that we use every Christmas because I think my mom doesn t want a real one for the leaves to shed off it and waste money to chop one down. We always have lots of fun. By: O. J. Hardin
We would like to recognize these students from NAMS for performing in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever on December 4 th, 5 th, and 6 th. Congratulations on a job well done! NAMS Excel Students had a Christmas Tea on Friday December 12, 2008 in the NAMS Art Room. It was from 8:30 A.M. - 2:30 P.M. It was hosted by the 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th grade. By: Tori Blake Abby Spencer Mary Kate Thompson Alex Bryant Jack Hickey Julia May Edmonson Reece Neely Ben Holland Cadie Mills Levi Bramlitt By: Read Robbins Mrs. Mallory Horn s 6 th grade Creative Writing Classes decorated Christmas trees for the 1 st annual Creative Writing Christmas tea. They invited family and friends to come and view the beautiful trees and enjoy holiday refreshments on Friday, December 12. Each class worked together in groups to decide the theme for the trees. The students were responsible for creating the ornaments and decorations for the trees. Each group was also required to write a poem about the particular Christmas tree. The poems were on display beside the trees for parents and visitors to read. Themes for Trees: 4 th period: Candy Tree, Writing Tree, and Nature Tree 5 th period: Happy Tree, Snowflake Tree, and Rock n Roll Tree By: John Wise
Reading Club The Reading Club finished reading My Dearest Friend: Letters of Abigail and John Adams. The Reading Club attended the Friends of the Library luncheon at the New Albany Public Library on November 18. They were able to watch Reverend Bill Everett and his wife Linda, review parts of the book and acted out scenes. The Reading Club read and finished the book The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. They attended the play at the Magnolia Civic Center on December 5. Their semester ended with a Christmas party at the NAMS library. We would like to thank everyone for making our FEATHER THE TURKEY project a great success. Because you were so generous, we are going to be able to purchase Christmas turkeys for our custodial staff to show them how much we appreciate all of their hard work. They do such of good job keeping our school clean. In addition, we raised enough money that we are going to buy Christmas for a needy family. Without you, they would not have Christmas gifts this year. Thank you very much for your support of this project. Our total for the turkey feather project is $251.00! Sixth grade raised $76. Seventh grade raised $77. Eighth grade raised $98 making them the winners! Sincerely, Student Council Officers and Representatives By: O.J.
