But in many cases, this category of people is always on the look out to find out what is WRONG about Jesus, his teachings and his followers. Then later this will be reason for them to disregard Jesus' teaching. This time from today's Gospel reading, their complaint to Jesus is why his disciples were eating with unclean hands, that is without washing them! There was a tradition of washing hands to the elbows before eating. Jesus' answer and teaching is rather strong when he condemns their lip service other than honor from their hearts! He wanted them to know that God loves those who keep his commandments above human traditions. In other words, he wanted them to avoid focusing too much on the external actions but instead focus on the inner disposition of the person. Jesus is likewise teaching us to imitate him in having a pure heart from which good actions and deeds flow! Let us especially today be slow to judge the outside of others instead pray for them from within our hearts. Amen Fiscal Year July-June Financial Box Score August 19 Incl. 4 St. Mark Parish Justice &Peace Food Pantry Item this Week is Pancake Syrup. Thank you! September 2, 2018 We share Pope Francis conviction that everything possible must be done to rid the Church of the scourge of the sexual abuse of minors and to open pathways of reconciliation and healing for those who were abused. United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People (2018 Revisions), quoting Pope Francis, Letter, February 2, Libreria Editrice Vaticana. Used with permission. All rights reserved. The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and keep it- Genesis 2:15. For the month of September our Diocese will be focusing on The Dignity of Work; with the corresponding Catholic Social Teaching The Dignity of work and the rights of workers. The Church teaches us that man derives his dignity from his Creator in whose image he is created. Pope Francis puts it this way: Work is fundamental to the dignity of the person. Work, to use an image, anoints with dignity, fills us with dignity, makes us similar to God who has worked and still works, who always acts. When we work, it is a form of continuing participation in God s creation. In our own communities, we may know someone who is unemployed, underemployed or despite being employed lacks the living wages to sustain his life. As followers of Christ, we are called to ensure that we put our talents to use, ensuring that the basic right of workers is respected; namely, the right to work, to decent and fair wages, to organization, to private property and to economic initiative. As we celebrate this Labor Day and throughout the month, please take a moment to pray for all those who continue to seek gainful employment, and seek ways in which you can advocate for fair wages and an economy that serves the people, and not the other way around. Take a stand for life Rain, heat, and even cold. Next month, we'll experience all three as we launch the largest 40 Days for Life campaign in more than 400 cities! From September 26 to November 4, our community of Virginia Beach will take part in 40 Days for Life a groundbreaking, coordinated international mobilization. We pray that, with God s help, this will mark the beginning of the end of abortion in our city and beyond. Join us as we pray together for the end to abortion. Where: Public right-of-way outside Planned Parenthood 515 Newtown Road Virginia Beach. For more information please visit: Cold Weather is coming!! Our Justice & Peace Ministry will be collecting winter clothing items for the months of September and October. We are asking for: gloves, winter hats (knit caps), scarves, sweatshirts or winter jackets, and socks for men, women and children; as well as blankets. Items may be dropped off in the bin next to the Justice & Peace bulletin board in the Great Hall. These items will be distributed to Catholic Worker House Breakfast Line, Onesimus Ministries, Migrant Worker Ministry and Blankets for the Homeless. *Please only new or clean/gently used items* For more information and item lists please visit the Justice & Peace Bulletin Board in the Great Hall or contact Joyce Gridley or justiceandpeace@stmark-parish.org.
