The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name s sake. Psalm 23: 1-4 2

Unlocking our Potential Most of us will have heard a sermon at some time or other about the methods of shepherding in Jesus time, where the shepherd would go on ahead to find safe places and food and water, and the sheep would follow. The 23rd psalm speaks not just about God s love and care for us but also about faith being like a journey where we are continually moving forward. We all have different needs as well as different gifts and skills to offer. However, none of us ever stop learning. There are courses here for those new in role as well as for those who want to improve their skills or knowledge. All areas of church life are covered - prayer, administration, theology, ministry skills, work with young people, schools So if you are wondering whether this prospectus is for you, the answer is a resounding YES! There is something for everyone so please read it carefully and book on to the courses and sessions you would find useful or which interest you. will feel at the end of 2016 that God has led us to unexpected places, and that we have grown in unexpected ways, and that this prospectus has played a small part in that. Revd Dr Manon Ceridwen James, Director of Ministry Training Forum: Sian Connelly Tim Feak Richard Hainsworth Manon Ceridwen James Huw Lloyd Pam Powell Tracey White Rosalind Williams In the past we have made a distinction in training between those who are in a representative or public ministry (for example Reader or priest) and those who serve in more practical ways e.g. as warden or treasurer. However, this prospectus deliberately contains all the training for all the various ways in which we are called to serve, whatever our role or ministry. This is to underline our commitment to shared ministry that ministry is something we do together and belongs to the whole people of God. We also want to emphasise the importance of doing what we do to the best of our ability. God deserves our best. We would like to encourage all the members of our diocese to learn something new this year; to try a new role or learn or improve on a skill. Our hope is that all the members of the Teulu Asaff 3

Training together for shared ministry 4...for Mission As disciples, we are all called to share the good news of the gospel in words and in action, and to share our faith with others. We can provide training in sharing our faith informally as well as for pioneer and evangelist ministry. If there are ways we can support your discipleship and ministry in your work, community life and family please let us know. Likewise we can offer help and consultancy for churches, mission areas and deaneries for more effective mission and engagement with communities. Please contact Sarah Wheat uk) or Manon Ceridwen James com) for more details. Ministry of Leading Some of us are called to leadership roles within our churches. In our prospectus you will find information about training for Wardens and Parish Officers. There is also information about training for leadership skills within licensed ministries. Tracey White will be able to give you more information about all aspects of church administration and leadership and Manon Ceridwen James for leadership within public ministry. Ministry of Pastoral Care All Christians are called to love our neighbours, in our workplace, community life, at the school gate and within our families. Sometimes this will be done through representative ministries of pastoral care, exercised on behalf of the Church. Because the fundamental calling of each Christian is to love, this ministry forms the basis of many licensed and accredited ministries such as that of a Reader, Bishop, Deacon, Priest and Pastor. We all need to receive pastoral care at some stage in our lives. No-one is simply a giver and never just a receiver. As well as Pastoral Assistant it is now possible to train as a Licensed Lay Pastor. Richard Hainsworth (rich_ hainsworth@yahoo.co.uk) can help Mission Areas and Deaneries with training for Pastoral Assistants. Ministry of Leading Worship At the heart of our calling as disciples is to worship God with our lives - not just in services on a Sunday! Leading worship is a crucial part of many ministries, and we can also offer help in training those who take part in worship such as reading lessons and leading intercessions. The worship leaders course is one way of helping churches sustain creative and lively worship. Richard Hainsworth (rich_hainsworth@yahoo.co.uk) can help you with setting up a training course in your area. Ministry of Preaching and Teaching There are many opportunities within church life for those of us who have skills in adult education and children s work to get involved with the educational work of the Church, in Messy Church, Sunday schools, Bible study groups and Lent groups. There are a variety of courses and resources that can be tailored to your needs. In order to preach, you need to be licensed usually as an Ordained Minister or Reader. For more information on children and youth ministry, please contact Tim Feak on timfeak@churchinwales.org.uk. For all other ministries please see the information below. Discerning Licensed Lay Ministries and Ordained Ministries If you are interested in discerning whether you have a vocation to Ordained or Licensed Lay Ministries please speak to your local priest or Mission Area (MA) Leader. They will be able to contact the Diocesan Office on your behalf so that you can have the help of a vocations advisor. There is training available now for Lay Pastors and Pioneers as well as Readers, Deacons and Priests. For more information on the discernment process please contact ministry.stasaph@churchinwales.org.uk and they will be able to set you up with a vocations advisor. More information can also be found on the Ministry pages of the Diocesan Website, under Church Life.

Living and Learning - Theology for a Pilgrim Church 6 What is God calling me to be and to do? How is God calling us to change and grow as a Church? We would like to empower our congregation and enable them to share in the church s ministry, but how do we go about this? How can we work together more as a Mission Area? If these are the questions you are asking, these courses may be able to help. The Learning Church programme offers two courses: Living and Learning and Exploring Faith. Both are designed to be used by groups from local churches, deaneries and mission areas to enable them to explore together what they believe, grow in discipleship and begin to form ministry teams. The Living and Learning series is a growing collection of six-week discipleship, reflection and training courses, which can be used flexibly and informally by local groups. The course has three core modules designed to help groups consider what God is calling each of them and their Churches to be and to do and to learn to reflect on their life and faith together. They are aimed at everyday church members, the modules do not involve any heavy reading and there are no assignments. These core modules are: 1. A Church for the Future. This module explores what it means to belong to the Church in Wales at a time of change and development and asks questions about our future mission. It allows participants to explore the story of their own faith, the meaning of discipleship, the story of the Church where they are and to begin to reflect on how that story might develop in the future as the world and church change. 2. Living Scripture. This module explores how God is revealed through the scriptures and examines ways in which God s Word can speak most effectively to us and our church today. It is designed to introduce students to the benefits of studying theology in an accessible way and its relevance to their faith. I quite distinctly heard God saying I want you to be a priest...don t rule anything out because you never know what s going to happen or what God s plan for you is. Revd Lorraine Badger-Watts, Curate in Petryal and Betws yn Rhos 3. Called by God. This module explores what it means to be called by God and asks the question, What is God calling us as a church, and me as an individual, to be and do in the future? It introduces students to the range of ways in which it is possible to serve God as a disciple in the world and as a minister in the church. Additional modules then equip those who want training for accredited ministries such as Pastoral Assistant and Worship Leader. All modules are bilingual. New modules are being developed to support a range of ministries and explore other themes, including mission and outreach, spirituality and prayer, church administration and working with children and young people. If you have an idea for a module or would like to help, we would like to hear from you. Living and Learning can be followed as a separate programme and you can choose to do whichever modules seem relevant to your local needs. Alternatively it can be studied as an introduction and preparation for anyone who wishes to go on to do Exploring Faith, as it will build the confidence of group members and give them some of the background information and skills they will need to feel confident tackling the more advanced programme.

Exploring Faith If you are thinking of starting a Living and Learning Group in your Mission Area or Parish, the materials are available as printed books from the Diocesan Office in St Asaph for 5 a copy to pay for the printing and translation. They are also available as PDF documents from the Diocesan Website for free for those who wish to do their own printing or work electronically. Setting up a Group Living and Learning is designed to be flexible and can be run however the local context requires but is this the right course and the right time? It does assume a basic knowledge of the Church and of Christianity - it is not an Alpha Course but is written for those who want to deepen an existing commitment to Christian life. It is also intended to be run at a time when local churches are looking to work towards setting up a ministry team and enable lay people to find and train for new roles. Consider timing - each module has six sessions and is designed to be run once a week for roughly 1 ½ hours. You are free to choose which modules you do and when you do them, but if you think that you might want to move on to Exploring Faith afterwards, we would recommend taking the three core modules in order, one each academic term, finishing in the summer, as Exploring Faith also runs on University terms and starts each September. Exploring Faith is a course run through an accrediting university and in small groups across the Diocese. It is open to anyone who wishes to take part in serious study and reflection on the Christian faith and discover how academic theology can be of value to our daily life and faith. It can lead to a Certificate, Diploma or Degree in Theology. Exploring Faith is an integral part of the Provincial training for new Readers, deacons and NSM priests within our diocese, and is open to anyone thinking of exploring a calling to one of these ministries. However, in order to be licensed or ordained you need to have been accepted by the relevant board, and have trained as part of the wider Provincial course which includes ministry skills and placements as well as ministerial, personal and spiritual development. However studying with Exploring Faith often helps students discover their vocation and equips them for future ministry. For more information about Living and Learning or Exploring Faith please contact Revd Dr Richard Hainsworth on or exploringfaithasaph@gmail.com 7

Mental Wellbeing and Spirituality Exploring the Power of Prayer through Prayer, Study (learning) and Action A taster day experiencing first hand the benefits of a method which can expand your faith and understanding of God. This method can be used within every environment which you are part of, any time, any place, anywhere. It is a way of supporting your Christian Ministry and to gain the support of others. In this method, PRAYER: is about being prayerful and bringing each situation to God. This may be thought of as communion, being at one together with God and the church. STUDY/LEARNING: may include formal study but is more about understanding the context in which we are working as Christian disciples working to bring about the mission of the church. This may be thought of as companionship, breaking bread together. After all, if we want to understand someone what better way is there than to sit down with them for a meal? ACTION: Again this is action in its widest sense. The method encourages people be Christian leaders in the broadest sense, where they are in parish, at work or in other aspects of their lives.
