3 Vespers for Trinity Sunday and The Celebration of a New Ministry As the 5 o clock hour nears, silence is kept. The service begins with the chiming of the hour. May 31, :00 pm OPENING SENTENCE Seek the One who made the Pleiades and Orion, and turns deep darkness into the morning, and darkens the day into night; who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the surface of the earth: That One is our God. Amos 5: 8 INTROIT We the Lord s People Jeffrey H. Rickard We the Lord s people, heart and voice uniting, praise One who called us out of darkness, light and truth revealing. Bring we now before God all our gladness and joy. O God, Eternal, Son, and Holy Spirit, Trinity blessed, heav nly light, the source of our salvation. Shine forth in our living now and evermore, Amen. A PRAYER FOR LIGHT Almighty God, we give you thanks for surrounding us, as daylight fades, with the brightness of the vesper light; and we implore you out of your great mercy that, as you enfold us with the radiance of this light, so you would shine into our hearts the brightness of your Holy Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lord God Almighty! 4 NICAEA THE FIRST LESSON Isaiah 6: 1-8 In the year of King Uzziah s death, I saw the Lord sitting on a high exalted throne, the edges of his robe filling the temple. Winged creatures were stationed around him. Each had six wings: with two they veiled faces, with two their feet, and with two they flew about. They shouted to each other saying: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of heavenly forces! All the earth is filled with God s glory! The doorframe shook at the sound of their shouting, and the house was filled with smoke. I said, Mourn for me; I m ruined! I m a man with unclean lips, and I live among a people with unclean lips. Yet I ve seen the king, the Lord of heavenly forces! Then one of the winged creatures flew to me, holding a glowing coal that he had taken from the altar with tong. He touched my mouth and said, See, this has touched your lips. Your guile has departed, and your sin in removed. Then I heard the Lord s voice saying, Whom should I send, and who will go for us? THE SECOND LESSON Romans 8: So then, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation, but it isn t an obligation to ourselves to live our lives on the basis of selfishness. If you live on the basis of selfishness, you are going to die. But if you put to death the actions of the body with the Spirit, you will live. All who are led by God s Spirit are God s sons and daughters. You didn t receive a spirit of slavery to lead you back again into fear,

5 but your received a Spirit that shows you are adopted as his children. With this Spirit, we cry. Abba, Father. The same Spirit agrees with our spirit, that we are God s children. But if we are children, we are also heirs. We are God s heirs and fellow heirs with Christ, if we really suffer with him so that we can also be glorified with him. Almighty God, you have revealed to your Church your eternal Being of glorious majesty and perfect love as one God in Trinity of Persons: Give us grace to continue steadfast in the confession of this faith, and constant in our worship of you, Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer; for you live and reign, one God, now and forever. Amen. O God, whom saints and angels delight to worship in heaven: Be ever present with your servants who seek through art and music to perfect the praises offered by your people on earth; and grant to them even now glimpses of your beauty, and make them worthy at length to behold it unveiled for evermore; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love s sake. Amen. 7 THE SERMON Singing Thrice Marcus McFaul THE INSTITUTION A representative of the Church Council standing before the minister with the new minister of music, says these words Reverend McFaul, we have come together today to welcome Daniel Cherrix, who was called to serve as Minister of Music at The Olin T. Binkley Memorial Baptist Church in September of 2014, and has served since November We believe that he is well qualified, and that he has been prayerfully and lawfully selected. The Minister then says Daniel, do you, in the presence of this congregation, commit yourself to this new trust and responsibility? New Minister of Music I Do. The Minister then addresses the congregation Will you who witness this new beginning support and uphold Daniel in this new ministry? People We will, with God s help. A LITANY (The congregation responds with the words in italics.) Let us now offer our prayers to God for all people, for this congregation, and for Daniel, our Minister of Music. Let us pray to the Lord. Lord hear our prayer. For all members of your Church in their vocation and ministry, that they may serve you in a true and godly life, we pray to you, O Lord. For Daniel, our Minister of Music, we pray to you, O Lord.

8 That he may faithfully fulfill the duties of this ministry, build up your Church, and glorify your Name, we pray to you, O Lord. That by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, he may be sustained and encouraged to persevere to the end, we pray to you, O Lord. For his family and friends, that they may be adorned with all Christian virtues, we pray to you, O Lord. For the peace of the world, that a spirit of respect and forbearance may grow among nations and peoples, we pray to you, O Lord. GREETINGS FROM ST. Be ye sure that the Lord is God; We are the people and the sheep of God s pasture. O go your way into the gates, into God s gates with thanksgiving, and into the courts with praise. Be thankful unto God, and speak good of God s name, for the Lord is gracious, and truth endureth from generation to generation. Glory be to the Creator, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. 11 Church Musician s Prayer God of Glory, around whose eternal throne all the heavenly powers offer their ceaseless songs of praise: grant that we may overhear these songs, and with our own lips and lives interpret them to all in whose presence we play or sing, that your church may behold the beauty of God, and see with mortal eyes the land that is a far off, where all your promises are celebrated, and where all your love in every sight and sound is the theme of eternal rejoicing; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
